So I got the Nexus 10 (sold iPad 3 to get it) and I am impressed with it. The screen is amazing, I have good battery life, and excellent performance.
However, streaming Netflix is not as crisp, the lack of tablet optimized apps is annoying, and reading is kind of awkward. I don't like landscape reading and portrait mode is too tall.
It seems like the huge resolution is ahead of it's time and I am sure it's just a matter of waiting for apps to catch up.
These are a few things that have been bothering me lately with this tablet.
Anyone else have these thoughts or know how to get passed the early adoption period? I am debating whether or not to sell it and get the Nexus 7. Seems like a reasonable (more universal) screen resolution with plenty of power. Also, seems like a good size for reading and web surfing.
Thanks.
UPDATE: Thanks for all of the feedback.

Before you sell it and get a Nexus 7, see if anyone you know has one and try it out. It would suck for you to sell the 10, get a 7 and find out you regret it. This is my second 10 inch tab, and at first it can see overwhelming, especially with the 10's resolution, but just keep playing with it. It will grow on you. Before long you will have no issues reading in portrait mode. For me its like reading a hard cover book without the weight and thickness. I hope you grow to like, and as for apps, I dealt with that with my last tablet.....not to many tablet optimized apps, and now I am seeing it again. Not a deal breaker for me. I would rather have apps playing catch up then my tablet be out dated in a month. Just my opinions.
Don't get a Nexus 7. The screen isn't very good and screen lift.
I just got mine today and well i can say i am really impressed with it , and i love it. I know there are not many apps optimized for the tab but yeah its not that bad for me. Also My netflix streaming is awesome, whats happening to yours ?
If you feel the screen is too big try using a 15 inch laptop for a while which will put the Nexus 10 inch screen with it's higher screen resolution in/to perspecive.
I have not touched my laptop since getting the Nexus 10 which was not the case with my Galaxy tab 7.7 inch screen which I have sold.
I find, just like my laptop, that I don't need any apps for using the Web and there are plenty of stand alone apps for navigation, music, office, games etc.
I hold the Nexus 10 in landscape like a laptop for viewing videos and web sites with a lot of full width detail so that I don't need to zoom, otherwise I use portrait.
Think twice before selling the Nexus 10 for it is the only tablet which gives a high definition Netbook performance in an even more portable format.
Try the Ocean browser too for it makes Web browsing on the Nexus 10 very fast and it supports Flash too.
I feel the same way OP. I had a nexus 7 and I loved it. Netflix and video media on the nexus 10 is a turn down. The screen is amazing but I sold my nexus 7 for a better media viewing experiece. The watching of media or movies isn't good at all on the Nexus 10.
I'm also debating of keeping or returning.

I don't see the problem with Netflix. Seriously. Plays fine and looks as good as it can considering Netflix streams at 720p at best.
Don't see the issue with any other media either. There are issues with codecs but that's a problem with the Nexus7 as well, just comes with the AOSP territory.

Same here i cant find the problem with netflix, mine looks great. As good as it gets i can say.
Netflix video and audio don't match on my tablet. Also, Frames skips after a while.
Is my tablet defective??
Can you guys try a few movies and let me know.
Thanks.

I feel the same way OP. I'm on my second one after returning the first for light bleed, go figure this ones worse. I like the size it just doesn't have the performance I was expecting. Yeah its got a huge rez, but my N4 feels 10x more fluid than the N10. Even just basic stuff like swiping to another screen feels better on the N4. IMO the android experience is just a lot better on the N4, which I find myself using even when I have the N10 sitting next to me.

I did a factory restore a few hours ago wanting to return the Nexus, I reinstalled Netflix right now and it is running good. That's strange. I'm also not getting any WiFi drops like I was getting before. I'm going to keep an eye on this.

Did you get tired typing so much information about your conclusion? And you must be very well placed in the tech community to pass judgement on a device that SOLD, not shipped, sold, one million units last month alone. Screen lift? Seriously? that is so last month's news.
But thanks for your 8 word review of the N7.
Apples to Apples the N10 is the better hardware platform. No question. It has both a front and rear facing camera. Has a display that might rival the retina display on the iPad, etc.
Get the N7 if you want a tab that will fit in a jacket or back pocket, can be held in one hand and can be bought for under $300. It really comes down to size, and your intended use. The N7 is not for bragging rights. It's for having a pure Google device in the same price you can get a Kindle or Nook for.
I'm here to read about how the new 10's see what problems they might be having, etc. But I am VERY happy with my N7 and take it everywhere with me. When I get the N10 I'll be keeping the N7.
Im not bummed out, this tab is 100x better than the ipad

Well, my own anecdotal Nexus 7 experience is that I account for FIVE of the devices. 4 16gb units and 1 32gb. Every single one of them had a major defect, including my current 32gb.
First one had a bad USB connector as well as major light bleed, but never had time to develop the screen lift issue because it was on the way back to Asus in a matter of hours.
Second one had astoundingly bad light bleed in 8 places, once again sent back before the screen had time to lift.
Third one had modest light bleed, but creaked, and within a week the screen lifted an epic amount. I was worried I might slice my hand.
The fourth also had bad light bleed, came shipped with a broken tab on the back cover so there was always a gap on the left side, and (wait for it) the screen was doing an epic lift. Still waiting on its replacement to come back from Asus.
And my final and current model is an October production 32gb that seemed pretty good at first, almost no light bleed and the least washed-out looking display of the bunch. And within two days the screen was lifting.
Now, I only purchased 2, my first 16gb and my current 32gb, both at retail stores. I should also note that it cost me $80 so far in RMA shipping.
I like the form factor for some things, mostly books and surfing on the throne. I'm satisfied with the performance, and not unhappy with the purchase price. It does what it does pretty well. But it's built like a 80's Hyundai.
Love the N10, playing full encoded BD 720p movies with no problems. Haven't tested the 1080p BD encodes yet.
Netflix runs great, Slingplayer runs good.
My N7 goes everywhere with me. It has no issues and was a first run batch.. light bleed? who knows, i dont put mine in a pure black enviorment with max brightness just to find a problem. IMO once it's reported a few times, some poeple go out of thier way to find fault.
I agree the N10 gonna take some time to get used to to read on. But playing games on is fun....
Both great products and excellant build IMO

It either increases performance or causes stuff to break (well, I guess it could also do both ). It's worth checking out if you haven't though.
As for being bummed out; meh, I sold my Nexus 7 for a Nexus 10 because of the specs. A15 ARM processor, Mali-T604 GPU, 2560x1600 resolution, that just destroyed the Nexus 7's specs. It seems the Nexus 10 can run hot enough after a long enough period of load to throttle the CPU frequency lower, which is a slight concern. Nexus 4 also does this, but I'm not entirely sure if such a thing occurs on the Nexus 7 or not.
My main interest in getting a Nexus 10 was gaming. However, when playing DEAD TRIGGER and SHADOWGUN: DeadZone, I feel that the N10's size is a bit... too much. Getting a controller should easily solve this little problem though
But in any case, the Nexus 10 also has HDMI-out, rear-facing camera, 5GHz WiFi support, LED light notification, better front-facing camera, and front-facing speakers. Nexus 7 doesn't have any of that (unless something changed with the newer models).
No issues with Netflix for newer videos, older stuff doesn't look great on anything. Videos I'm streaming from PC look awesome and I just use a Nook touch for my reading, need eink for that. Yea some apps don't look as great as they could, but nothing as bad as an iPhone app on the iPad.
I think a lot of my thoughts and feelings stem from just coming from an iPad with thousands of tablet optimized apps, down to less than 100 on the n10. When it comes down to it, I use my tablet primarily for reading, web browsing, videos (YouTube, Netflix and Movies), taking notes, and very light gaming. I don't use that many apps on my tablet. However, I have a lot of apps on my gNexus since it has an internet connection 24/7. The only reason I use my laptop is when I want to do some real PC gaming.

Oode's reviews are the main reason why I bought my Nexus 10! After seeing his enthusiasm for the tablet I was sold. Google need to cut that dude a cheque.

For those of you with the device, at 299 now I think it's a great deal as I can't justify the 500-600 on a xoom, etc. With a custom rom on this baby, is it pretty smooth? What about internet surfing, is it smooth? Just wondering because my friend has a nook for example with CM7, and browsing the web isn't the greatest...but doable I guess.
Is this tablet pretty stable and relatively fast when clicking, launching, playing games, etc? I'm just trying to justify its purchase or waiting for like the HTC Flyer. Of course I'm sure that will be in the 500$ range as well...
As far as basic functionality (web browsing, gaming, etc) the tablet is great. You have a lot of choice regarding customization and hacking, the gTablet is probably one of the better tablets for experimentation and tinkering.
The biggest negatives is the screen, if you already have an iPad or IPS screen-type tablet the screen will probably be difficult to get over. If you can ignore the screen then you will have a difficult time finding a more capable tablet for $285.
Wait for an ASUS....$400 with IPS and Honeycomb

Yes, but neither of you will have a great picture.
My wife can "shoulder surf" when laying next to me, but some things she can't make out (pictures, etc).
Thanks.
Also it has mini HDMI out or whatever right? Can you output it to your television and watch a movie (mkv for example) from this device to your TV?
Does the web browser have decent pinch to zoom, as in, it's smooth and not choppy?

People are reporting that MKV runs choppily. I haven't tested MKV, but XviD works great, if you can bear the quality.
As for the cable, this thing uses a weird connection that is hard to find. Most vendors (read, in China) are selling a cable for $40, and a dock for around $50. If you're looking to connect this to a TV, look forward to tacking on an extra $50 for its asking price.

I am using Dolphin Browser HD, and I can comfortably say that it is almost as good as using a desktop browser, in terms of performance (Flash, web browsing, downloading files, etc.)
Agreed with the previous poster. I also use Dolphin HD, running on Vegan, and the browser is great. Pinch zoom is smooth and fast.
I've been lusting for an iPad for a while, but have never been able to justify the expense of a decent sized one (I refuse to get anything < 16GB). I was hoping that once the iPad2 was released that there would be more of the G1 version available (either as refurbs or used on ebay), but haven't found much luck finding one I was willing to pull the trigger on.
I've got an iPhone 3G (jailbroken, of course...) and tons of apps that i've downloaded, so I was familiar with the processes necessary to "root" an iOS device.
I must say that having little to no experience with Android (phones or otherwise) before getting this little beauty, I'm quite impressed. A coworker has the Xoom and aside from a slight size difference and the aforementioned screen visibility issues, my gtab holds it's own against his Xoom. Plus I have $300 more in my pocket then he does at the moment...
I'm running TnT Lite 4.40 on mine right now and it's as fast as I need it to be.
If you do get one, I recommend upgrading the ROM as the stock one is pretty crippled. DolphinHD is gorgeous and I'm a BIG fan on using Aldiko to read ebooks. I had previously been using Stanza on my iPhone and it's a world of a difference on this thing....
For some the screen is a deal breaker. If you've used another tab/reader with a better screen, then it may be for you also. I don't mind it so much as I haven't had much of a need for it be viewable at any extreme angle and it's kinda like a built in privacy filter so that nosy nellie's can't see what I'm doing on it unless i want them to.
The wife and daughter LOVE Angry Birds on it and I usually have to wrestle it away from one of them in order to use it.
With a little bit of elbow grease and willingness to experiment, this is a great tablet for the price...
Hey guys. I've been agonizing over which of these tablets to get. I am an android devotee already. I have a Gnex. What I want most out of my tablet is to be a portable movie/book machine. I plan to use it as my primary netflix device over my xbox because I plan on using it at work on my break and cuddled up in bed. A big issue for me with movies is the quality with black. I HATE when movies get to darker scenes and the blacks are not pure. They appear blotchy and purple-ish. I can't explain it well. My laptop (lenovo y570) doesn't handle blacks well. Another thing I need is for the book reading experience to be superb. I plan on overloading on e-books so I'm looking for a comfortable thing to hold and screen quality to not strain my eyes with words. I'm not a big app user. I just like to read news and watch videos. The most of my app use is with videos and I do plan to use emulators. N64 especially. For my needs, which of these two do you guys suggest?
I would get the Nexus 10 then. I've heard loads of stories of the Nexus 7 having bad backlight bleed. The Nexus 10 isn't immune however, but there should less chance of getting a device with bad backlight bleed.
The sooner they start using amoled screens in devices the better imo.
Nexus 7 for Books
Nexus 10 for Movies
But if you have problems with the black levels, you should get an amoled screen like Galaxy Tab 7.7
I got my Nexus 10 today and came from Nexus 7. I have to say N10 is huge, N7 is a toy compared to it.
N7 is much more comfortable to hold and read, but its rather small.
Double Resolution on N10 could be an argument too. Text is crisp, but the tablet is harder to hold.
For a 10 inch tablet, the N10 is very handy and light, but compared to N7 its so big.
For gaming like n64 you better take the N7. Also reading on N7 is more handy. Youtube and watching series is fine too and its half the price, so I would pick the nexus 7.
I suggest you try out some 7 and 10 inch tablets. The N10 is like the galaxy tab 2 and N7 comes close to Kindle Fire.
Yeah root an Kindle Fire HD 8.9 or get a Nexus 10. No brainer. I had a Nexus 7 and just didn't feel it. Nothing stand out about it besides Jelly Bean.
My fear with the N7 is that it is too close to a phone. The difference from my 4.65 in. screen on my gnex to the 7 inch screen wont be as much of an improvement in experience over my phone with regards to movie experience. My fear with the N10 is that it will be too big to lug around to work and that reading wont be as comfortable in the 10 inch form factor. I guess I'll have to bite the bullet and jump on the N10. I think there is less downside and more justification for the purchase.

This idea is interesting. I was about to bring that up. The 8-9 inch seems like a sweet spot. The screen is pretty high res. I don't really want to do any rooting. Its not that I don't know how. I've done it on my old evo and my gnex now. I just want to keep things simple. And the amazon prime deal seems kinda sweet. I'm not sure how I'll handle the limitation with the customization though. That was my biggest issue with the iphone. I hated how restricted I was.
What do you do with the micro HDMI?

I would say the Nexus 7. I own both, the Nexus 10 would suit the movie environment more, which would be suited to home/work etc. But the Nexus 7 is perfect for 'on the go' (literally), its lightweight, perfect for one handed use and great for reading (which is what i do with all the time).
Performance wise, its great, nothing to complain about, i have the 16gb version and i haven't found myself short of space at all. I tether it to my phone via bluetooth and all is perfect.
Aesthetically speaking, its amazing, the bezel is the right size, enough for your thumbs in landscape and enough in portrait to not let your fingers, that are wrapping around, to cause any interference.I had no defects, its a bit soft on the bezel, but well, it doesn't bother me.
Im loving the Nexus 10 though, but i wont be using it 'on the go', rather, somewhere where i would be situated for a while.
Hope this helps, otherwise if you have any specific questions, do let me know
Thanks. I plan on using it at my desk on lunch break and then bringing it home to use in bed at night to read and Netflix. That's the extent of my portability. I won't be using it on commutes because I drive.

I don't like using my laptop for movies because the screen quality is just not good at all. The blacks are terrible. I use it for hardcore gaming. I don't like to Netflix a whole lot on my Xbox because I just don't like going through the menus and I like having a smaller screen up close rather than a TV for movies.

I really like 9" tablets. For me, I'm able to interact with the screen without worrying about spraining a thumb. I had a 10-incher previously and that little bit has made a big difference for me. I actually thought I'd get a KF or the Nook+ (or whatever they're called -- the 9-inchers). Then I found a 9" Tegra 3 budget tab that quieted the German voice of frugality in my head...
In my opinion:
Nexus 7 Benefits:
- Tegra 3 (can take advantage of Tegra/THD-only games and game effects
- Smaller (Portability)
- Stylish Back
- Better Development (currently anyway; device existed longer than Nexus 10)
Nexus 10 Benefits:
- Faster (better RAM, CPU, and GPU; likely to receive more Android updates longer then N7)
- High-res Screen
- Larger Screen (less zooming on websites, bigger buttons, etc.)
- HDMI-out
- Dedicated Front Left/Right Speakers (N7 has 2 tiny L/R speakers in the rear)
- Rear-facing Camera
- Better-quality Front-facing Camera
I had a Nexus 7, and it worked fine and all (no backlight bleed; very minimal screen lift), but I would love the chance to try a 10-inch tablet. Now that the Nexus 10 is out, and with better specs, I can do so I'm really interested to see how gaming is on it mostly. Plus I would find a rear-facing camera very useful (I don't have a dedicated camera; trying to use the N7's front camera was a pain lol).
If it was a comparison between Nexus 7 and a Kindle Fire HD though, I'd choose the Nexus 7, unless you did a good bit of reading I guess (not that the Nexus 7 doesn't have ebooks and magazines, but perhaps the Kindle might have a larger collection). Overall though the Nexus 7 is more versatile and has a lot more features available for it, even without rooting (rooting is particularly easy on the Nexus 7 too, should you go down that path). I can't speak about the hardware of the Kindle Fire HD though since I never owned one, or even looked into it
Oh, and another suggestion. If you can't personally try out a 10-inch tablet, I might suggest making a cardboard cut-out with the exact specifications on size as a Nexus 10 (size specs are on Google's tech-spec page for the N10), and then just try holding it and stuff (that's what I did anyway lol). I learned that I seem to like 10-inch tablets, but I guess I'll find out for sure once I do get a Nexus 10 Can't really simulate weight though, so idk how heavy it'll be...
I think no reason to buy the nexus 7 except for reading books. It's too small to do anything. (well, I assume you have your smartphone to do other stuff liike mail checking etc..)
nexus 7 is really great for on-the-go and gaming.
it is light and small.
playing asphalt 7 on nexus 10 for a long time will be quite a workout but playing on nexus 7 is just right.
nexus 10 is more for watching movies.
it all comes down to you, if you like to bring it along with you anytime, nexus 7 is really the best. It doesn't attract too much attention, it fits perfectly to hold with 1 hand. If you like to watch movie before sleep, nexus 10 might be better.
I also find the Nexus 7 screen wanting, the playbook screen looked better with a much lower ppi. I also preferred the ipad 3 much better than the Nexus 7 for browsing the internet, which I assume is 90% of the tablet's use for most including myself.
I won't know for sure if the Nexus 10 is also much better when browsing the internet until I get my hands on mine but I assume the above applies since the Nexus 10 should be effectively the nexus 7 software in an ipad 4 body with an even higher ppi.
You're better off with N10. I sold my N7 and don't regret it. Anxiously waiting for N10 get delivered.

I have a Galaxy Nexus, and the screen size is no comparison. it may not seem like 2.35" is a lot more, but that is diagonal space so it goes both vertical and horizontal. It really is a lot bigger than a phone screen and the perfect size for reading a book or taking with you on a trip. If I were in the market for a new smaller tablet for reading, it would be a really hard choice between the perfect portability of a 7" and the great specs and still somewhat good size of the Kindle Fire HD 8.9"
Really it just depends on if you want it primarily for reading or if you want to do a lot of video watching. Since you started with movies, then mentioned portability to work, then said you want to load a ton of book on it, I honestly think the Kindle Fire HD 8.9" would be the best choice for you. It is a compromise between both sizes (7" and 10"), a compromise on screen quality between both devices, and is a compromise in cost (but closer to the N7). It is just the perfect balance of all things you listed as wanting to do for your situation.
Alright everyone, I know this is a Nexus subforum so bring on the hate

Yeah the Kindle Fire HD 8.9 seems like a sweet spot in size. I don't know how I like that Amazon software with the ads and stuff though. A girl here at work has the original Fire and I haven't taking much of a liking to it. I wish there was a Nexus 8.5 or something. That would be perfect. I think I'm going to go with the N10. My biggest want out of the tablet is to be a portable movie machine. I'm sure books will be just fine on it as well. I used to have a Galaxy Tab 10.1 and it was great but I gave it to my sister for her birthday. I thought that my laptop would make it obsolete but due to the poor screen resolution, I'm not satisfied with the movie experience. And I cant bring it around to work.
Never buy a Kindle tablet.... Full of ads

I like how the screen is very resistant to scratching. I've had my Intl 5.0 for 13 months and the screen is as good as when I got it. My nexus 4 and 7 are very prone to scratches in comparison.

My favorite thing is big screen, low price(bought it year ago for 150 euros) ,overclocking (use it on 1.56 ghz which is 56% more then stock),that it has sd card slot so not worring about space (like on my nexus 7 every time when i want some new game i spend hour thinking what could i delete) and that it dont have a sim card so battery last long and dont have to worry will someone call me in the middle of listening of song.
Why i dont like is that there is no fully functional GB or JB and 99% there will never be.

Although, the back part of the gp5 is scratch prone. I guess this proves gorilla glass doesn't do a thing against scratches?
The size! It's not the fastest media player out there, but it works. My 4th generation iPod touch is much faster but i sold it for the galaxy player 5.0.
very long standby life even on 1.2 GHz OC. Great screen size for movies, you can watch it even when you are lying down (try watching for an hour lying down with your nexus 7 ). Screen still good/big enough for reading
Big screen, great battery life, a lot of storage (sd card), Android (can modify almost everything), very nice GPU (imho it can run everything, but it can do much more if the CPU were better) and price (€140, 4 months ago).
After an overclock of ~50% (1.5GHz) I got much more power, especially from GPU (Games).
CPU and 512MB shared RAM are the mainly lack, but overall is a great device.
Please, can someone confirm that the screen of this device is immune from scratches? It is something like plastic and i can't believe it is; so i've put an ODIOUS screen protector to prevent them. Do you use some other cover, like "socks" or similar?
Thank you
The battery quality is superb, and the functionality as a tablet makes watching videos and playing games very enjoyable. Also, the speakers are nice and clear. Never gotten a scratch the screen glass or the back of the tablet, just some smudges.
I would recommend this to anybody if they are looking for a small tablet. :good:

I was going to say the same, it is not a $300 iPod with limited functionality.
My favorite thing is the expandable storage followed close second by Bluetooth music streaming.
The only thing that could make the streaming better is if the metadata were also streamed, if only for those moments when I get a string of songs that start off at low volume.
Others things I like would be customizable interface and good battery life.
cool cool cool any uses any good cases for this thing??
I like the big screen for watching videos, the expandable storage for music, and the screen is really scratch resistant.
Also it helped me realize how amazing Android is and its functionality.
Of course the bid screen. I use it for my gaming needs. Also this is the first and only Android device I have to date so there's the sentimental side of things (Don't worry guys, The reason I bought this is because I hate Apple!). Hoping to get one of the Nexus devices soon.
The screen size is definitely my favorite feature. Back in the dark days when I ran on an iPod touch, I had to hold the thing sideways to be able to type comfortably. the 5.0 is almost as wide as the iPod is tall, so I can comfortably type in portrait mode on it. The screen is also great for watching movies, and, while the density isn't great, people still immediately notice and admire that feature when they see me using it. Almost every day at school, I have someone with an iPhone walk up behind me and hold it up next to my Galaxy Player and make some sort of comment on how they wish they had mine instead (I'm sure that if they saw the specs or realized that it isn't even a phone, they'd change their mind)
I also love the expandable storage and the fact that I can be overclocked to 1.5GHz and still get really good battery life.
The main feature for me is the ability to play media (Video / Audio) without the need for third-party applications, codecs, etc.. It supports almost all formats natively.
The sound quality is unmatched with SOUND ALIVE (this feature only in Froyo).
Battery life is excellent.
Big screen and surprisingly good quality. My vision is spared when I'm on the internet or reading an ebook.
It's Android.
Good battery, good sound, plays all my music and videos out of the box, 4.2" screen and all for £70.

Deciding between and N10 and N7, and I am torn.
Nexus 7
+ Smaller/More portable
+ Zippy Tegra 3
- 720p screen
Nexus 10
+ Insane Resolution
- Dual Core
That's all I really know about both devices. I have 2 friends with N7's and I really like the form factor, A LOT. But something about the N7 just doesn't sell me on it. Likewise, the N10 seems to be something I'm more familiar with, but the price tag seems like a bit much for me, considering I've never managed to see one in retail.
All opinions appreciated*

I've purchased the Nexus 7 twice, and I've sold it twice. The first time I sold it was when I purchased the Nexus 10... Then I re-purchased it a month later because I missed the small form factor for when I was out of the house. I then return it 7 days later (yesterday) when I jumped ship to T-Mobile and upgraded my Nexus S to the Nexus 4. The Nexus 4 made the Nexus 7 a redundant piece of technology and also out performs it by a large margin.
The Nexus 7 is a great piece of equipment for the price.. I will give you the pros and cons..
Cons
* - Audio quality via the headphones is awful. There are a ton of apps claiming to make your headphones vomit rainbows and unicorns but those types of app packages I steer clear from as I don't believe in them as from past experience they never work. DAC matters not the app.
* - I/O speeds are slow.. You can see a side by side comparison I posted of the read/write speeds between the Nexus 7 and Nexus 10 here. It can be slower to load apps/games than you might expect a tablet to perform. It's not bad, but compared to other devices it's noticable.
* - Color reproduction isn't the best.
* - (opinion) The Tegra 3 I wasn't impressed with.
* - No rear facing camera
Pros
* - Size: If you have no other tablet or a Smartphone with a large LCD like a Nexus 4 or GS3 then this will be a great portable device for you to get stuff done with.
* - Price: Currently what you get for the price is a good bargin. The longer its on the market though the slimmer this "good bargin" edge becomes and inches closer to being just another tablet on the market in a price range. It's still a great bang for the buck though and not much competes with it.. Yet...
Nexus 7 is exactly what it was aimed to be.. A good performing tablet on above average hardware for the price. You miss out on things like high i/o speeds and a rear camera but you have to give some things up for the $249 price tag.
Nexus 10
Cons
* - Same bad color reproduction the Nexus 7 had.. It's not a deal breaker but it's obvious.
* - The general consensus is don't buy them from Google directly. Find a retailer as it will make returns easier if it's defective.. Some believe the N10s have a high defect rate, some believe they don't.. It's currently the elephant in the room in the N10 forums. I wouldn't let it keep you from buying one but just be aware the concern exists.
* - Size.. It's 10 inches.. Some people think that this will never be a concern for them.. Until they get it and try making it a part of their daily schedule.. It's not meant to be throw in your pocket and carry around as a day planner.. It's big
* - You can't play Tegra HD games
* - It ain't cheap
Pros
* - Speed.. Speed.. Speed.. Mother of god is it fast
* - Resolution speaks for itself.. The screen is incredible
* - Battery life considering the pixels and speed the processor is putting out is fantastic. I average 8-10hrs of screen on time with non-gaming casual use.
* - Audio quality is excellent.. Woflson DAC on board.. No need for magic pills and As Seen On TV products to make it reproduce audio at high quality. The onboard speaker quality is really good also.
* - Gaming performance is excellent and far out performs the N7
Summary.. It depends.. If you plan on upgrading your phone (no idea what you have) soon I would go the Nexus 10.. Like I said.. Soon as I got my hands on a Nexus 4 the Nexus 7 became instantly redundant and outdated. The only thing sacrificed was 2.3 inches of screen but I gained ten fold in performance, screen quality and audio quality...

Well said and helped me make my decision! Nexus 10 it is! :good::good:
I'd only add one thing: the Tegra 3 in the Nexus 7 absolutely gets destroyed by the Exynos 5 in the N10. Even though the Exynos 5 is dual core, it's based on the newer A15 architecture which is a huge jump in performance, so the core count doesn't really matter in this case.
i bought the nexus 7 day 1, It was a awesome little tab and ran great until 4.2.1. New update smoothed it out a bit. It's nice, but I also have a Note 2 and the jump to the tab wasnt big enough. I still used it, but i just wasnt completly happy having both. I bought the Nexus 10 last week and love it. Its fast, great resolution, great camera and doesnt feel too big for me when im laying in bed which was my main concern. I actually booted up my N7 last night and just holding it i kept thinking "what is this a tablet for ants?". It's funny considering I dont get that feeling with the note 2, but then again its probably because i know its a phone not a tablet.
I'd say it depends what your phone is. If you have a iphone or something with a smaller screen, you might want to go for the N7, if its something in the bigger end near 5" or more, go with the N10
I went for the 10 over the 7 because I have a Galaxy S3 for portability and wanted a larger screen to use about the house. Oh and the specs of the 10 simply blew me away .

Thanks for saving me all that typing lol... that's exactly why I have a10 now. My wife has the Nexus 7. Between the I/O speeds and premium feel its a no brainer. I have two managers at work who are getting then after seeing mine. One even returned his 2 day old iPad4 because it was no comparison. Also not to be over looked are the front speakers. You never quite realize how bad cupping is to get decent sound is until you don't have to do it anymore.... pure perfection.

You are absolutely correct about the sound quality, I've given up on the Nexus 10 a few times after feeling it was impossible to get one without major issues but keep coming back after trying other devices. My favorite alternative was the Asus Vivotab Smart but the volume is extremely low and poor sounding which ultimately made me return it and try a few more nexus 10's the sound quality on this tablet is amazing compared to the rest.

How so?
Better screen resolution. Even The Verge said it was on par if-not better then the iPad4 screen.
More memory
Lower price
Significantly better sound quality from forward firing speakers
I had an iPad 3, dad has a 4. I sold mine for the Nexus 7 and then upgraded to the N10. I have two friends at work getting them as well, one of whom returned his iPad4 after 3 days for the N10.
Although I'm a Android lover I was a huge advocate for the iPad. It was a great device done right. But not so much anymore. Google did an amazing job on this device and I can no longer recommend an iPad, only the apps are better, but to be honest in the past 6 months the play store has jumped by leaps and bounds

Instability, Backlight bleed and battery life. Even on CM 10.1 I'm still getting random reboots everyday and 5 hours of screen on time. Compared to never rebooting and 12+ hours of screen on time. And I'd take the lower resolution over the 2560x1600 anyday if it meant zero backlight bleeding and much better performance.
Edit: Don't get me wrong, I prefer Android. I'd just rather a cohesive and smooth experience like I have with my Note 2. If the Nexus 10 had that I would be stoked on it. But it doesn't. Gets the job done for now but I was happier with the iPad so I'll likely go back unless Samsung releases a Note 10.1 with retina quality display.
Edit Edit: I'm also not saying the iPad is objectively better because you can't say that about either. I'm just saying for my use, in my experience, the iPad was smoother and much more stable. No random reboots for me on it whereas on the Nexus 10 it would lock up all the time and the battery life was wonderful. You can say, "Oh you shouldn't use your tablet more than 5 hours a day anyway" but that's also assuming you are always in a location where you can charge it.
I get Nexus 10 as:
Insane resolution, the wording was extreme clear and sharp, far better than my laptop.
Smooth performance. In market, not much Android tablet was smooth as this, for current available android tablet, I only can accept Padfone 2.
It is not iOS, sorry iOS never my prefer OS due to it restriction and boring interface.
** Reboot/hang issue was fixed 99% now in 4.2.2, so I am ok with it. Anyway Google really need more stability build on it Android OS, as no doubt it still cannot compete with stability of iOS.
My N10 just arrived a week ago...
I've been all over the place... with 2 7" tablets, 2 7.7" tablets, 2 8.9" tablets and 2 10.1" tablets in the last year.
This month, I had the Kindle Fire 8.9... which at 250 is an amazing value for a media tablet with some android compatibility. I got tired of the KF89's limitations like the accelometer, having to lock rotation, lack of compatibility, difficulty in getting a CM rom and my own decision to buy the 16gb version. I decided to get the Galaxy Note 10.1 as it was the fastest Android tablet under $400 with removable memory. I was very unhappy with it from the hour I unboxed it and decided I was done beating around the bush.
I wanted to have a no-compromise Android tablet... and today that tablet is the Nexus 10 32GB. In a few months it will be a Exnos 5 quad, or a Tegra 4 or a Qualcomm 800... but today it's the Nexus 10. And in the near (18 month) future, the N10 will stay ahead of the curve in full-size rom development. It feels good... sounds good, looks good and works well.
I would just buy the nexus 10 because of the screen size and use it to watch free/new/theater/ hd movies (I'm going to post the link to the app later in a new thread) but I dont know if the app would be compatible with the n10

I didn't originally plan to buy it. Planned on getting the Nexus 7, but once I got to staples, it just seemed to small, Saw they had the N10 but not on display, So I took a shot in the dark since had 2 weeks to return it, but once I booted it I was hooked, I love the size, still fairly portable for me, I use it A LOT more than I expected and it does so much more then I could think of, I love taking it to work and playing Playstation games on it with ease, or SNES/NES games to just sitting back watching movies via plex/netflix. The screen is amazing even at half brightness everything looks beautiful. and of couse that darn tapped out game is just perfect for the big 10inch screen..I got the 32gb since all they had, and its way more than enough for this beast. Team it up with the Moko slim fit multiangle case. I am just VERY please with this purchase
I have currently a N4, a N7 and a TF700 which I sell for a N10.
I like them all for different tasks.
The N4 is my communication hub, my music player and the hot spot for my tablets. I use it often for small tasks like web search or navigation.
The N7 is my entertainment device for commuting because I can carry it in my jacket.
The TF700 is for reading PDFs (because some of them are not scalable so it's more comfortable on a large display) and longer browsing sessions on holiday or when I work abroad. And it works excellent for watching films.
However I'll exchange it for an N10 because of the performance. It drives me nuts that it is so much slower than my other two devices and because I would like to have a device with proper fastboot support.
Ok guys, my friend's Note 10.1 got in a bootloop and he asked me to fix it for him, as it will be with me for a few days and I've already fixed it I decided to do a comparison, feel free to ask for my opinion on things I don't mention.
First off I guess I'll start with the ports
On the left side there's nothing on the Note while on our Nexus we have the Micro USB port and the 3.5mm headphone jack, on the right side we have the micro HDMI out, the note doesn't have anything on this side either.
At the bottom we find the pogo charger on the N10 and the charger/USB/MHL port in the Note, the S Pen is located in the right bottom corner, there's a Mic located at the bottom in both of them.
At the top we find the volume rocker and the power/lock key while on the Note we find those along with an IR blaster and a Holy Micro SD card slot (god damn it google)
It's also worth noting that the Note doesn't have NFC.
This is subjective but the tacky back and sides of the Nexus make it far easier to hold and it feels solider., the glossy back on the Note doesn't feel nearly as bad as I thought it would.
The speakers
I didn't think I would write anything about these but after some use I noticed the speakers on the Note sound better, this must be thanks to Samsung's tuning, as I'm almost completely sure these devices share the same hardwarein this area, perhaps we can copy it?
Oh and by the way the Note has different sound profiles on the video player and Music app, all of them sound better but this isn't limited to these apps, the difference is found across all apps, launch Youtube or third party music players and you'll notice it.
I'll talk about the performance without bringing the benchmarks here as you can find those everywhere else, for this test I´ll be comparing my sister's N10 (which isn't rooted and is completely stock) with the stock Note.
The Note is running 4.1.2 while my sister's N10 is running 4.2.2, I'll start by clearing all recents and closing everything with the task manager on the Note
Scrolling across the homescreens and the app drawer is really smooth on both however there are micro lags on the Note - Disregard that, I had one update left and wehn I did it it got rid of the micro lags while this doesn't happen on the Nexus, I suspect this is the launcher's fault tough.
Launching apps happens at pretty much the exact same time most o the time, the Nexus is faster by fraction of a second some times.
The note does have more free RAM all of the time as it's GPU doesn't need as much of it as the on the N10, It can use as much as 1.78gbs of it while we can only use 1.2gbs
For the browser comparison I'll be using chrome beta on both, all browsing data has been cleared. I can compare the AOSP browser performance but I'd have to use my N10.
I'll just say that the sites load faster the Nexus, after that the browser experience is pretty much the same until you pinch to zoom which brings us to the screen section.
Edit: The S Pen is really useful when browsing as it can act as a mouse when you hover on website dropdown menus and the like.
The screens
This is probably where the biggest differences can be seen (as long as we don't talk about touchwiz), coming from the Nexus 10 you'll inmediately see the jagginess and lack of detail every f*cking where in the Note, from HD videos to text to images, sadly, this is the only thing the Nexus has going for it in the screen department.
The Note has a MUCH, MUCH better color reproduction, the next time I get my hands on my dad's iPad 3 I'll update this to tell you about a comparison between those 2 screens, I think the iPad looks better though.
Not only that but Samsung has also provided it with color modes which are a good thing to have, black levels between the N10 and the Note are comparable they are maybe a little darker in the note HOWEVER I've noticed the Nexus has a better black level (I believe that's how it's called, for reference go here www.lagom.nl/lcd-test/black.php) The note has trouble with the darker tones.
The screen on the note is far far more responsive than the one in the Nexus I beleieve this is a software issues icause on purpose in the Nexus, do the following:
Open the your favorite broswer and make your thumb and index finger touch each other as when you prepare to pinch to zoom, now, with both fingers together start the pinch gesture, you'll notice how the Nexus will NOT begin to pinch to zoom until your fingers are about 1/3" apart from each other, This isn't a hardware issue as if you enable the show touches option in developer setting yo ucan see the device is registering both of them.
Now download and install the Quickpic gallery app from the Play store and pinch to zoom the same way in there, you'll see how that app behaves, the is the way the Note/HP Touchpad/iPad behave when you pinch to zoom in them.
Edit: I forgot to mention that the Note doesn't have any kind of backlight bleed.
The camera
Well, while the Samsung camera app offers many more options than the stock 4.2 camera.for some reason it takes longer to focus and the pictures are NEVER even close to the quality the N10 offers, the pictures are just terrible, I think this is the same sensor as the one in the N10 but for some reason the pictures are full of noise and lack detail.
The front facing camera is just as good as the one in the N10, Hell, I think it's better than the rear facing one, and like in the Nexus, it's one of the best front facing cameras I've seen. (It's miles ahead of the iPad)
Well, that's all I can think of at the moment, feel free to ask about other differences.
Have you done any gaming on the note 10.1? I am especially interested in hearing about heavy games like MC4 or so as sometimes my N10 lags during gameplay for MC4. It is however pretty smooth on other games like Nova 3 and asphalt 7 with gorgeous graphics.
Thanks in advance if you consider this.
Sent from my GT-N7100 or the Nexus 10, heaven knows.
Those who help noobs go to heaven. True story.
What about the battery life? I am really curious about this question.
Sometimes the nexus 10 has some laggs while using the chrome browser.
I also miss the 3g modul in the n10
The battery on the Nexus is a bit better (my sister has a lot of battery sucking apps though, and I'm UV'ed in my Nexus so I won't use it to compare it with the Note) I have yet to try any heavy games, I'll run NFSMW later today after I flash the Note as it went back to the damn bug even after the ODIN restore.
Don't use Chrome... Use the stock browser or Boat browser.
No lags, delays, anything - pinch to zoom is ultrasmooth and pages load fast.
I get the feeling that people experiencing lags or sluggish behavior are running a ton of un-optimized widgets, because I never had any problems and my benchmark results are stupidly high compared to anything else.

I know but you can't load the AOSP browser on the Nexus unless you root it, I could use mine for comparison though.
I actually had the note 10.1 before i got the nexus 10. It was the white version and boy was she pretty. Just a little too much plastic for my taste. The screen was gorgeous! With all honesty I enjoy it a little better then the nexus 10 screen. I guess I'm a rich color type of guy. The downside of the things was the fact I felt the screen was built for the s pen using only. Every time I tried to swipe across a application it would open that app up if I wasn't using the s-pen. It got to the point where it was unbearable to use. So I got the nexus 10 And been loving this beast every since. I love the feel of the tablet, the front speakers are nice and the most important reason why I fell in love with this thing. Stock android and The SPEED!!!! The speed is the fastest i seen on any android devices and i had them all. Also the camera is one of the best you can find on a tablet.

You say the screen was better on the Note?? I just returned the note because I couldn't stand reading text on it, it was just too fuzzy for my tired old eyes. I was assuming the Nexus would be better being that it has a higher resolution. I guess I'll have to make a Staples run and see if they have the Nexus' in stock and see for myself.

He meant color wise, the screen on the Nexus I'd the shapest one you'll find on any tablet, reading on it is great but whoever calibrated it crippled it on purpose.
The N10 is sharp and you will have no problems as far as reading text on it.
Note port?
So I love my Nexus 10, but I was wondering if anyone has tought of porting the Note 10.1 ROM to the Nexus? I just need a little more productivity from this tablet. Plus the stock browser is faster than the chrome.
my nexus 10 also has the hdmi slot.. why the note 10,1 uses a samsung dongle.. like a apple type variant.. only samsung approved
