[Q] Problems after flashing 4.1.2. leaked - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi all and sorry for my bad English.
I installed Omega's 4.1.2 leaked, tested it for a while and returned to previous JB custom ROM.
I always make a clean install (Wipe Data - Wipe Cache - Wipe Dalvik cache), but every time now I flash custom roms, I have hints from 4.1.2 in menu in my custom rom.
I think there're some "trash" files which aren't deleted with data wipe.
What shall I do?

try a fresh install after 'Format system' under 'mounts and storage' in CWM recovery and then see

Will it delete any files from my storage?

No, it will not do any harm to ur Internal Sdcard (the 11.5 gb one) since it only wipes the Internal storage (the 2gb one) for u

[Q] What does wiping system do?

Im sorry if this is such a nooby question but on some custom roms it recommends to wipe /system. What does this do? And what do you lose? When I usually go to another rom I wipe user data, cache, dalvik cache and battery stats. I never had any problems by doing so. In my case I never saw where to wipe /system I found out it was under mounts and storage in recovery a few days ago.

This is wrong....
The /system partiton is where Android itself gets stored. As in the system apps and framework. It is recommened to wipe it when changing to a *non-wipe* firmware just in case some files are different and get left over from the previous rom.

Thanks, that makes sense.
not wiping before installing a new rom usually results to bootloops.
i see to it i wipe before installing another rom (unless i'm installing a newer version of the existing rom)
in advanced wipe in twrp what does wiping system but keeping data, cache, and internal storage do ? will i keep my apps and data?

As was posted earlier in the thread, wiping system basically wipes the rom/os and system settings. Your user data, apps, pictures will not be wiped. If you rebooted after wiping system the phone will not work, however you could wipe system then flash an update of the same rom and reboot and you should be fine(depending on the changes between rom versions). This is basically referred to as dirty flashing. FYI, most custom roms have a script which wipes system, cache and dalvik/art cache automatically preserving only /data(user apps and data)

[Q] Custom ROM update

Hi all,
I already have Illusion-xT 1.7.2 ROM installed on my GS2, and an update was released few days ago (1.8.0). My question is, should I do a wipe and delete all existing apps to install the new version (install from sd card, CWM recovery menu) on I can install it directly without loosing any data (no wipe/factory reset) ?
Thank's
Do a backup (just in case), wipe cache and dalvik, then flash 1.8.

Using CWM formats before flashing new roms?

Hi
When you want to do a clean install of Windows OS, you all know that the right way to go is to format the primary partition first..
I was wondering: why can't we do the "same" in Android?
I've noticed that in CWM recovery there are many format options in addition to just doing Wipes...
So what if instead of doing the old Wipe data/cache and factory reset before flashing new rom, especially when migrating from Sammy to AOSP, we use the FORMAT function of the CWM recovery console?
So this bring up my new line of questions:
Which Formats are safe (as in terms of not bricking only, since we all know that we must backup first)?
Is Format data safe and recommended before flashing?
Is Format system safe and recommended before flashing?
Is Format SD card safe and recommended before flashing?
Does Format system erases the entire OS, meaning the ROM with it's kernel? If kernel is wiped does it mean that CWM will be lost upon next boot?
Same goes for Format SDCARD. Will this erase the entire internal memory? So the new ROM.ZIP should be placed in the external SD first?
I'd really appreciate if someone could answer all of the above questions
Many thanks
EB
If you don't have bad chip then all are safe. If you have bad chip then make sure you have safe kernel.
General steps before flashing a new ROM.
1. Backup your present ROM just incase
1. Wipe data/ factory reset
2. Wipe cache partition
3. Wipe dalvik cache (under advanced)
4. Format /system (under mount)
5. Flash your desired Rom/zips
6. Fix permissions (under advanced)
Notes:
- If you are moving from from an AOSP ROM to Samsung (vice versa), perform all the steps above.
- If you are upgrading / downgrading from one android version to another e.g ICS to jellybean or 4.0.3 to 4.0.4, also perform all the steps above.
- If you are upgrading from a Samsung ROM to another wipe the same android version, you may skip step 1.
- if you are upgrading your Aosp/aokp Rom with another with the same android version e.g 4.0.4 Aosp to 4.0.4 aokp, you may also skip step 1.
*******Important******
If you are presently running a Samsung based 4.0.4 Rom that is using Samsung based kernel e.g CF-ROOT or stock kernel, please flash Siyah kernel before performing any of the above steps. You will end up with ash unusable device if you don't adhere to this important information.

Just 2 more questions:
1. what about format Format SDcard (internal)? Is it also safe/recommended? What does it do exactly?
2. can any of the the above formats delete the IMIE? Where i it stored? On internal SDcard? Will formatting it delete it?
Thanks

Formatting the Internal Sd card wipes all your data (music, photos, videos) on the internal memory of the phone.
Doing all those wipes doesnt affect the IMEI as far as I know...

1. You're first question has been answered in the post before mine.
2. About IMEI:
-Your IMEI is stored in your root folder /efs inn your system reserved partition.
-Flashing Roms and kernel shouldn't mess with this folder but sometimes it happens.
-most of the Roms Agnes kernels made by recognized developers will backup your efs folder before flashing.
-too be on a safer side though, you can visit the thread below to backup your efs (imei) folder yourself before messing with your phone.

My problem is that I keep thinking in MS Windows terms.. I was sure that "Format SDCARD" is the parallel to formatting the entire "Hard drive", just like to delete the system partition..
Know let me see if I got everything right:
Format system is like deleting the Windows folder - no more OS (ROM)
Format data is like deleting all user account = deleting the "Programs data" folder in Windows - no more app data
Formatting SDCARD is like deleting the "Users" folder including "my documents" - no more user private data
So by using the 3 above formats, there is no need to do a Factory reset. But what about Wipe cache and Dalvik? shouldn't System format take care of those two caches? Or perhaps Cache and Dalvik are to separate partitions?
And for the few last question, so I can finally declare myself an Android expert :
(1) Format boot is a very bad idea right? It will delete the bootloader, meaning one must flash a rom that includes one of it's own?
(2) Are all roms intended for CWM flashing come with their own boot partition?
(3) So if Format boot is risky, I can conclude that the CWM recovery must be part of the boot partition right?
Many thanks for all the help. Once I get all of this right, I will feel confidant to start flashing roms on my own for the first time (I already got my phone rooted and CWMed by flashing Siyah kernel using Odin

1) As far as I know, the boot partition is reserved for kernel. So, if you format it, phone won't be able to boot further than the initial Sgs2 logo. But it will still be flashable in Download mode.
2) If kernel is a part of boot partition, and most roms come with their own kernels, the you could say that the come with their own boot data.
3) If you format boot, you will also loose Cwm as it is a part of the kernel. Download mode would be still accessible as it is a part of the (secondary) bootloader which can be only overriden with Odin.
But again, I'm not 100% sure about this.

You saved a noob a whole lot of troble:cyclops:
I want to erase all my previous data in internal storage. More specifically, erase the OS and data (app data, user data, media, etc), then I'm gonna flash new ROM.
But of course, I don't want to erase boot system and recovery system.
1. Can I do above by using CWM - Mounts : format /sdcard ?
2. Does format /sdcard include format /system, /data, /cache, and wipe dalvik cache?
3. Is format /sdcard safe to do?
The answer !!!

I've found the answer here:

(eliminate all spaces, as I cannot post URL yet)
Now we know what to wipe or format (and what to not format)

To install a new rom, you don't have to wipe the internal sdcard, just wipe data & cache and navigate to advanced and wipe dalvik cache, and then to mount and format system, then flash your rom, or use TWRP it's easier, press wipe then advanced wipe and mark (data, cache, dalvik cache, system) and swipe to wipe, then flash your rom.
Ps: all app data is removed from internal storage (data in sdcard\android) when you wipe data, so you don't have to wipe internal storage

Using TWRP....

Hi Everbody!
This is my first post, so i apologise if i do something wrong...
Here it is my problem...
Last week i buy a S3 I9300. I flash Sentinel Rom 4.XX. Before that i did make root and did intall TWRP, since is less problematic than Recovery...(in opinion of the developer).
Now comes my problem....
The developer says in their instructions:
5 Factory Reset and wipe Cache and Dalvik Cache
6 Format System Partition
Im looking at TWRP at this moment...and i have no doubts about Wipe Cache and Dalvik Cache.Ok.
Format System Partition.....now, here it is my big problem. Do i press System? Do i Wipe System?
Or do i press: Internal Storage?
What i want is a FULL Clean of the S3. I really don`t care about backups, programs, since i have all on my PC......i want a ROM clean without any trash from previous room...
I have some experience with flashing, with 3ยบ party softwares, but this room uses a zip file...with is for me more complicated, since i never now if im making a fresh install, or a "mix" of files....
Resuming:
On TWRP, except the SD EXTERNAL where i have some backups, and the ROM.zip, what is the best option do format/Clean ALL internal storage?
And yes i read the tread about 4.2.2 new system of data lost..(wich i still think is to confuse, but that`s another question).
Thank you in advance!:good:
P.S: - I don`t have (or don`t see) the famous /data/media/0.......
Im using at this moment Sentinel 4.50. No problems.
What i want is a FULL Clean of the S3. I really don`t care about backups, programs, since i have all on my PC......i want a ROM clean without any trash from previous room...
TWRP / wipe cache dalvik system internal sd card and data .

Hi.
Hi didn`t understand your statement. I forget to tell that i also do/did Factory Reset.
I says this because one of the occasions, making this 3 steps, didn`t erase previous files from the previous ROM....
What`s the best opcion to erase internal and SD Card, with exception of external card?
Thks in advance.

[Q] Wiping internal SD

Hey guys,
I flashed NeatROM recently for the 4.3 update.
Followed these steps before flashing:
-Install CWM Recovery with Odin
-Download, and save zip to internal sdcard
-Go to recovery, Select Wipe data, Wipe cache
-Go to Advance and Select Wipe dalvik cache
-Go to Mounts and storage, select Format system
-Select Install Rom from SD card
Click to collapse
Everything went well and the rom works fine.
I went in to flash a custom kernel earlier and when I selected install from zip I noticed that all my data/folders from the previous rom were still present. The new data is now in a ' 0\ ' folder.
I was running a 4.1.2 rom with Siyah kernel before I flashed 4.3. I also had a build of carbon flashed as a second rom for a short time. I'm guessing this has something to do with the data left behind.
I just want to start with a clean slate and wipe the internal SD completely; will megawipe (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1832326&page=38) do what I need it or do I need to format the SD from within CWM?
Thanks in advance.
p.s. after such a wipe is it better to flash a new rom via ODIN or would it be okay just use a zip from an external SD.

You need to format /data partition. Megawipe will work. But, IHMO, no need for that. Just do it yourself from CWM.
Also, theres a big difference between odin "roms" and flashable zip roms.
If you flash something via Odin, it means that's probably (or surely) an official Samsung firmware without modifications. A flashable zip one is a custom rom.
Depends what you need/want. Most of us here use custom roms that we flash via cwm.
Thanks for the quick reply, bornlivedie.

My mistake for not being clearer in my original post; I have flashed a few custom roms before so I did know that Odin's generally reserved for flashing official sammy roms and customs go through custom recoveries.
Thanks for the heads up and the concern though. Much appreciated.
Going to 4.3 I'd recommend formatting the internal sd in CWM, also system, data and preload. If you read neat rom thread you see similar advice, the 5.4 aroma installer comes with Philz 5.15 recovery which is the best CWM to use.
