[Q] Bricked Nook Tablet (16GB) 'n' Logo Bootloop- NEED SUGGESTIONS - Barnes & Noble Nook Tablet

Hey Everyone,
So here's what's happening:
I have an original Nook Tablet (16GB) v1.4.0 with Blocked OTA updates. Well I did...it's sort of dead now.
Initially, I purchased the device for my son on Christmas 2011. Back then, we only had 'Indirect's' ZergRush exploit to root and install CWM on Nook Tablets. There wasn't a whole lot to choose from. The Bootloader was still locked and there were no Custom ROMs in sight.
This actually worked fine for us, since my son got to enjoy his new rooted Nook Tablet with all the benefits of a 7" Android Tablet, yet he still got to enjoy the 'Nook Tablet Experience', as he's purchased/downloaded over a dozen Nook Books over this past year.
Earlier today, I went to turn on his Nook Tablet and instead of it booting up like normal, it fell into an endless bootloop.
It would power on, I could see the 'n' logo along with the verbage at the bottom that mentions the Adobe Flash technology and that's it. It keeps doing that over and over again.
Now since I do have quite a bit of hacked android devices, in this situation I would normally just manually boot into Recovery and flash my Nandroid.
Well, for whatever reason, I guess that's not possible here. No matter what I do, it's stuck in that horrible bootloop.
I found a thread on here where I can make a bootable MicroSD Card that would boot me into CWM. From there I could restore the Nandroid.
I actually 'made' this MicroSD Card, or I thought I did...but unfortunately the Nook Tablet will not boot AT ALL from it. So if I leave the Micro SD Card in the Nook Tablet, it's pretty much dead. It won't turn on, power on or anything.
As soon as I take out that MicroSD Card, there goes the bootloop once again.
Question(s)
1. - Does anyone have the correct files or a better way, so that I can make this bootable MicroSD Card, so that I can boot into Recovery and flash the Nandroid?
In case this doesn't work, I did make another MicroSD card that contains the v1.4.2 Stock Partition Image. Apparently, I can boot off this and it will do a Factory Restore of the Nook Tablet, running v1.4.2 Stock. It will not be rooted or anything.
2. - If I go this route, what are my options for rooting and installing custom recovery on v1.4.2?
3. - If I do choose to do this, I may just look into a Custom ROM. That said any recommendations?? I would prefer JB over ICS. I would prefer a VERY CLEAN, FAST, lightweight ROM, over heavy mods.
The one consideration is that it needs to still allow us to utilize the native Barnes & Noble functions, where we can sign into our account, download books from our library, purchase and download books and etc.
Again, if I can just boot into CWM and flash his Nandroid, that would be a hell of a lot less work. But if not, then so be it.
Thank you!

this is a link to download cwm "mediafire .com/?tpckcmp9pr5e826" i had to put a space between "mediafire and .com" cuz the forum wont let me post links yet. Just put this file on a micro sd card..turn nook off and insert card... and when you turn on the nook is should boot to recovery..hope this helps

Systems6,
I went ahead and downloaded your .zip, and extracted the files and placed them on the root of the SD Card. I placed the SD Card back into the NT. Still no dice, not booting up at all. Any other suggestions?
Thx.

hope this helps you out...

well it looks like you have to reboot to stock...then root and flash rom again...here is the link to return to stock "http://raywaldo .com/2012/06/make-unbrick-repartition-image/" again i put a space in between the 'raywaldo and .com"...looks like your going to take the long route to fix it good luck hope you get it running again

** UPDATE:
I was able to follow the instructions on the following thread and made a bootable MicroSD Card running CWM v5.0.2.8:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1640958
Once I was booted into CWM, I tried to do a Nandroid Restore, the way I always have. Unfortunately, I got the following error message:
'MD5 mismatch!'.
Now, I have never encountered this. I made sure that MD5 Signature verification was toggled 'Off'. Not sure if that would have made a difference or not.
Unfortunately, it didn't help. Now I'm stuck with a Nandroid that I cannot restore.
Can anyone suggest something for me to try, in order to try to restore this Nandroid? If not, I will go Plan B and restore to Factory v1.4.2.
However, if I go that route, I still would like some answers to my initial questions about which ROM to go with and etc. Might as well go to JB if I have to start all over.
Thanks!
BJ

Plan B starting to look better and better...
Well here another plan B that was tested earlier and it took 15 minutes from start to finish.
If you want to go to JB then I would recommend this rom and the only thing that you can't do on BN app is that you will not be able to use the books that have record your voice in book or play the read to me books (I think once you are not on the stock bn rom, those two parts stop working). I run kindle app for library loans, overdrive other e-readers without problems,

I got the MD5 mismatch error once when I renamed the Nandroid backup directory. I don't think it liked the spaces in the directory name. Try renaming it to the original name (if you even changed it).

There is a link in my signature that works to root at the very least firmware 1.4.3. Anything that you purchased from the B&N store will still be there if you restore to stock, if you install the Android Market again, anything you purchased will still be there (and you can go online and see anything free that you had installed, and install it from there).
If you do choose to install another ROM, same thing. Books purchased from the B&N Market should be available in the Nook app from the marketplace (I have not confirmed this with my own tablet, though).

Is there a stock ROM for the "Woot version?"

Is there currently a recovery ROM for the g-Tablet version shipped by woot.com? This is a 3389 ROM with some customizations. Most, or possibly all, of these can be replicated easily since they consist primarily of some home screen setup, links, and a few apps including the Kindle reader, ColorNote, and Pandora.
Following the recommendation to do a data wipe after installing a replacement ROM appears now to mean that even with the backup.zip from my wife's unmolested tablet I'm unable to return the tablet to its actual original state.
If there is not, I currently have one woot.com g-Tablet that is unopened since my wife ordered one for herself after I'd ordered one for each of us. I'm planning to sell it, but if I can create a backup ROM without messing the tablet up for the eventual purchaser I'm willing to try.
I'd like the same thing, if you come across one or make one yourself.
I ended up doing a Format SD Card, thinking it literally meant the external MicroSD Card I had put in the device, because I had read this may help prevent force closes, but it formatted the internal storage which had my stock backup on it and left my MicroSD card alone. I should have copied that over to my PC before wiping anything, just in case, but I'm so used to Android phone hacking that I thought I could get away with it.
I had a ton of force closes with TNT Lite and rebooted, hoping it would help, but then it got stuck in a reboot-loop. So I ended up repartitioning the internal space (thus wiping it AGAIN ::sigh: and using nvflash to restore bekit version 1105 (nvflash_gtablet_2010110500) and OTA updating.
Woot ROM
Going to make one now. Finished charging my "woot" g tab and booted once to make sure it worked. Just installed clockwork. Making backup. Let me know if you still need it.

Thank you for doing that. Unfortunately, it doesn't restore the tablet to its shipped state.
Edit: scratch that - I did eventually get it to do exactly that.

I'd originally assumed the way to use this would be to rename it to update.zip and use it in recovery. That seemed to flash something, but did not come close to restoring to the shipped state.
Next, I realized it was a clockworkmod backup and figured I could extract it to my clockworkmod backup directory and run a restore from it. This just gave me an MD5 checksum error.
Any more thoughts on how to use this?
Edit: see my later post. I did get it to work.
Do you need the ROM?
My woot Tablet Reset after the 3rd power cycle and restored itself to something besides the original shape I received it in. I thought it was ridiculous as it would not show the "Stock" Videos it was shipped with. Angry Birds also did not work originally. After it Reset things worked. I would return it in the state it is and say it didn't work almost at all when it first arrived.
The original active wallpaper was kind of cool though.

My g-Tablet is working fine. It's just a bit messed up in terms of applications and links after I flashed a few ROMs and now I'm having trouble getting it back to its original state.

Mine was the same way. I didn't wait until it was fully charged until powering it up and it had angrybirds and some other stuff loaded on it. None of it would run though, it would just force close out. After turning it off, waiting for it to fully charge, and then turning it back on did I get put through the new user wizard and everything worked right.
would these work?
Hello, I was curious to know if you had seen (and if it would work) the viewsonic stock Roms that are mentioned on another post in the g tablet section of this site. I can't post links yet but there is a sticky called "viewsonic G-Tablet ROMs frequently asked questions (read this first)" this is posted in the G tablet general section.
The 3rd post down in that sticky has "gtablet recovery firmware images (official viewsonic images)" and there are 3 versions available to download the latest being 3316. Could you flash to this and then do ota updates to get to the current version? I'm sure you'd have to get a few of the apps back yourself (angry birds, Pandora, whatever else came on it) but wouldn't this get you pretty close to how it was when you got the gtab? I'm new to all this and am just throwing this out as a suggestion. I'm curious to know if this is all you'd need though.

Those work pretty much as expected, but they don't restore the tablet to its state as shipped by Woot. Not having seen any other g-Tablet, I can't be certain but I strongly suspect they do restore the tablet to what it would have been if I'd gotten it from Sears or someplace. I already know I can rebuild it. I'm just looking for the lazy way and, ideally, to get it *completely* back to stock, i.e., any updated drivers or other things that may not be immediately obvious.
So, I did get jm20's file to work for restoring my woot.com g-Tablet to its original shipped state. There may be several ways to do this, but I'll outline what worked for me.
- installed clockworkmod and booted into cwm recovery.
- did a data wipe and formatted all partitions then rebooted, whereupon I naturally got an error.
- rebooted into APX mode.
- performed an NVFlash restore.
- as soon as the tablet rebooted and asked if I wanted to connect via USB, I connected without doing any setup.
- via USB to the tablet, created a directory clockworkmod in the root of sdcard (on the tablet, not the removable SDHC card) and a subdirectory backup within that.
- on my computer, extracted the directory 2009-01-01.00.26.55 from the downloaded .zip file.
- copied that directory via USB into /clockworkmod/backup.
- reinstalled clockworkmod.
- rebooted into cwm and ran a restore of the directory I'd copied.
At this point the tablet now looks and acts mostly like it did when I first opened it. The only problem is that OTA updates no longer work because of clockworkmod. I addressed this via NVFlash using the following in a command window:
- nvflash.exe --bl bootloader.bin --download 9 recovery.img
whew!
Sorry about the lack of instructions
I am really busy with a bunch of other stuff, and I'm just playing with the G-tab when I take a break. The file I uploaded is as you figured out just a direct copy of the folder that clockwork recovery made when I told it to backup the "unused woot g-tab"
Like I said I only booted it up once to make sure it worked and then I immediately made the backup which is why the date says 2009.
After the backup was done, I copied the folder that clockwork made which contained the backup files to my desktop. I then zipped it up and uploaded it to mediafire.
Therefore the zip file is not a file that clockwork can use to restore the ROM, however if you extract the folder/files from the zip file and copy them to the g-tab, clockwork will recognize the folder and will do a full restore from that folder / files.
Sorry for the confusion.
A few other things:
I bought two of these from Sears as soon as they came out (late October 2010). I opened one and tried to use it. The stock ROM barely worked. It was basically useless. I knew the hardware was great but it was crippled by the ROM. I installed clockwork and flashed a few ROMs and found Vegan to be the best of the bunch, however even that left much to be desired as it was still very early on in the whole scheme of things.
After two days of using the one I had opened, things weren't looking good and I returned the unopened second one.
After about 10 days of trying to see the positives, I couldn't take it any longer and the first had to go back also. Unfortunately I had rooted it and installed clockwork and I simply couldn't bring myself to return it in that condition so I spent somewhere around 12+ hours reading various forums (mostly this one, android forums, and android central) figuring out how to completely return the unit to "stock". No traces of clockwork or any other boot manager and I put a clean stock ROM back on it.
Two reasons why I mention all of this:
1. If someone is needing to do this, it can be done unfortunately I have no idea how I did it and didn't bother to keep the files or information because I swore I'd never buy another G-tab (woot made a liar out of me).
2. If you are considering using an older "stock" ROM, don't waste your time. The woot ROM is actually pretty good. Had I known the woot ROM was halfway decent I would have bought two of these. Any of the newer ROMs are probably better than what I initally experienced.
Lastly, if anyone cares; I am currently running Calkulin's ROM with Clemsyn's kernel and I must say I am impressed. The unit is stable and very fast. Those guys have done some great work. Finally some great software that can take advantage of the hardware. Again, had I known things had gotten so much better I'd have ordered two.
If you guys are running something else and you like it let me know, I haven't had time to mess with the other ROMs.
OK, I have got to get back to work. Hope this helps.

Brand new Android user here. My Woot gtablet reset itself also after the third reboot to something other than the original. If I figure out how to insert your Woot ROM zip file, this will restore the gtablet to it's orginial state?
Thanks

I had this experience as well. (This Woot tab is my second g-tablet.) I updated it immediately upon the first boot, then rebooted. One or two reboots later, a setup screen magically appeared. After going through the setup process it seems that all of the original woot settings were now gone.
It also seems that Adobe Flash is no longer installed, and has to be re-installed. I haven't tried Angry Birds yet, but I believe that the latest firmware update comes with that pre-installed. Flash can be re-installed by downloading it from the ViewSonic g-tablet "Favorites" page, or use this link and reboot after installation:
http://www.freewarelovers.com/android/download/temp/1291899570_Adobe_Flash_Player_10.1.95.1.apk
As for being able to return to a "stock" firmware, I always save the updates before allowing it to install them. I believe they can be found in the /cache folder after it downloads, and must be copied to external storage before you run the update. I haven't actually tried to use these to restore to a stock firmware, but I believe that you just copy it to /mnt/sdcard and rename it to update.zip.
These are the versions that I saved:
update-smb_a1002-2967-user.zip
update-smb_a1002-3053-user.zip
update-smb_a1002-3588-user.zip
Edit: None of these are the "Woot" version.

[Stock Firmware]Restore Barnes & Nobel Nook Tablet 16G 1.4.0 from SDCard

This is for the Nook Tablet 16Gig version only. Do not use with 8Gig version
Introduction
Making a magic SDCard which will take you back to stock 1.4.0 is easy!
This method will allow you to restore 1.4.0 firmware onto your Nook Tablet. Personally, I think holding the buttons and halting the device boot 8 times in a row is a bit time consuming. So, here is how you make a "Magic SDCard".
Instructions
Just follow these 4 easy steps to restore your device to 1.4.0.
Download this file: http://devftp.xda-developers.com/files/AdamOutler/NookTablet/acclaim_update.zip (Do not change the file name. Make sure it is named "acclaim_update.zip" without quotes).
Copy the file on a Micro SDCard.
Insert the Micro SDCard into your Nook Tablet
Turn on your Nook and observe a factory restoration.
Conclusion
This will initiate Recovery Mode and flash the entire zip. acclaim_update.zip will restore your device to stock firmware and wipe all user data. I will be working on other methods and I believe it is possible to force the device to boot it's entire firmware from Micro SDCard.
Troubleshooting
"N" Button is inoperative
solution:
Press and hold the Power and "N" Button until the device reboots.
Continue to hold the Power and "N" button until the device reboots 8 times. This will wipe data and restore the "N" button functionality
SDCard method does not work
solutions:
Ensure you have a Nook Tablet, not a Nook Color (funny as it sounds, this is a big problem)
redownload the acclaim_update.zip
Use the Nook settings menu to format the sdcard
Use a different SDCard
Video walkthrough
This video will walk you through switching firmware versions, rooting, backing up, and several other techniques
At the risk of sounding clueless..... How will placing a .zip file on a non-bootable card help? What about the signed bootloader issue? Are we assuming the Nook Tablet is not broken to the point it will not boot on it's own?
Part of the boot process checks the SD Card for this exact file (and checks the contents I assume). If it exists, it gets executed. Someone else has already confirmed this works, though we can't yet get it to work for any other firmware (ICS, etc).
Nice. Use the old 1.4.0 factory image to restore. Brilliant.
Now if only we can do that with custom roms.
Initial registration process with B&N
Does this .zip boots up just as if the NT came out of the box? if so, would the initial registration process with B&N push the 1.4.1 to us, or rather the NT pulls it from B&N?
It will (I believe) reset it to an out-of-the-box condition. The registration process might pull the update automatically...if you set up wifi. Don't set it up (right away), and you won't have an issue. Go in, root, side-load what you need to block the update, and you should be good to go.
according to BN's website, the update takes 5-10 min to download onto your device, and they instruct you NOT to power it off while this is occurring.
I would think you have a few minutes when it comes up to quickly find and install a few apps you may need for the 'fixing' process, (es file explorer, mount /system), then shut off the wifi.
Worst case scenario, you lose 5 minutes and are forced to restore again...
Just to be clear, this doesn't require root right?

No. Root is not required.
A few painfully obvious noob questions. I have a 16gb sd card installed in my tablet. I have sideloaded numerous apps and they show up on my go launcher. Can I use that sd card to install the download you recommend? I assume you mean download the link you provided to my computer and then side load it to my SD card from the usb port on my computer.
Do I need to port all my side loaded apps from the go launcher onto my computer prior to this installation as the factory reset will wipe out all my third party sideloads?
Sorry for the questions. I'm sure this is obvious to most if not all on here but I learned to use a keyboard with a Underwood manual typewriter in 1957 and I'm just now getting comfortable with windows XP.

Yes, this is (currently) it's primary purpose.
What if you haven't received OTA yet?
I am really nervous. I bought my wife a NT for Xmas...i rooted it and loaded it with everything she'd like to have on it. Then, i turned it off, wrapped it, and placed under tree.
When she opens it Xmas morning, will it automatically load this 1.4.Bull****? Is there anything that can be done to prevent the update before it happens so that you don't lose hours of work?
Thanks,
Tommy

Okay, so i went in Titanium backup and froze the devicemanger and bn cloud service. That will enable me to NOT receive this update, correct?
If you installed the gapps with indirects root script you shouldnt have to worry about the update as it installs FOTAKill.apk as well which should kill ota updates like this.
Edit: Does this mean the tablet is unbrickable if you end up bricking it by messing with its software?
Thanks so much for this file and the information.

Not yet.. we need to prove it.. however, it will take all the root folder files in the update.zip uncompressed and named in a special way to do that.
I just checked and my wife NT is still 1.0.
What is the improvement of 1.4.0? Seems like i missed it.
And can i use this package to upgrade from 1.0?
Much thanks

Aborted install from CWM

I have been scouring these boards for hours and can't find my exact problem so I think I need to post this as a noob. I did Albert Wertz's method of rooting my Nook Tablet 16GB which he states will void the warranty. Afterwards I showed version 9.9.9 so I think it was rooted however I never saw superuser and such. I did something where the main menu bar no longer appears when pressing the n button too, annoying, I want it back too.
Anyway I booted into CWM from SD and then removed my boot SD and installed another SD with the img files on it. I have about 4 img files on it from throughout the day trying to update to CM7 and then tried a restore and just a CWM flash, every img file I select starts to perform it's update and somewhere around "extracting files" it says "installation aborted". At first I thought I had a bad memory card but both cards behave the same so I think they are good (creating 70MB partition on the CWM). I did a system restore on it and now it reports version 1.4.0 but I still get all the same errors, I'm stuck. I've spent about 9 hours of messing with this today and can’t think straight. I am going to bed and will try tomorrow, but if anyone could please tell me what I am missing I would very much appreciate it. Happy Easter ! Thanks, Mark O

In CWM, you need to install from .zip files. It sound like you're trying to install .img.
Thanks... I was installing .zip files, not .img. I was pretty useless last night. I used Alberts 4_5SD recovery this morn and got it rooted to 9.9.9 and I had superuser and titanium backup so all was good. I ran NWM from internal on the tablet and told it to install ROM from the SD card. I pointed to the file and told it to backup, then install the new ROM it said an error had occured when I tried this. I then booted from another SD card to go to CWM and after the white screen with the box, it went into backup and then restored the ROM, however it took me back to a unrooted version. It looked for the ROM I wanted to load but that was on the other SD card. Now I am back at square one, frustrated...
I think I might have found the problem but I am not sure. When I was doing the original CM7 update I wrote CWM to the E drive, (MyNook) so now the drive reports a total size of .99GB with 433MB free. So CWM is installed on this drive and I think that is the proplem. Is there a way to get CWM off the E drive? If I can just uninstall it, will that be sufficient enough to get the root back and then correctly install CM7? Thanks again in advance.
I guess this is turning out to be an ongoing update from me, lol... I am back to a rooted Nook Tablet with 9.9.9 So since I am a glutton for punishment I will try again tonight to do the CM7. I simply deleted the CWM file that I found in the internal memory and it seemed to not hurt anything.
This time I am planning to download Indirect’s latest "NOOK Tab Recovery Flasher.apk" directly to my Nook Tablet, (at the inlaws now and no wifi
If I understand correctly it will install CWM direct on my tablet, I am just wondering where it will end up installed? Then I downloaded the file for internal CM7 installation, the file is named "Nook-Tablet-CM7-Alpha-Final-TEAM-B-signed" I have it and nothing else on the sd card. So when I run CWM from the Nook, I point to the .zip file on the SD card. Sounds easy but after three screw ups, I am aprehensive.
If someone could please confirm that this procedure and the files I am using are compatible and should work with my 16GB Nook Tablet. Again thanks very much and I hope all have been enjoying this Easter holiday........

The steps that you have listed in this post are correct. If you do this exactly, everything should go according to plan.
Indirect's great app installs CWM to the recovery partition of your device, overwriting the B&N stock recovery. You can always go back to stock recovery if need be, though, so don't worry.
Thanks Solar.Plexus
The procedure worked as I hoped. I don't understand what went so wrong in my first attempt but the main thing is my wife doesn't look at me with THAT look anymore, since she thought I bricked her 12 hour old NT.....

Q - I screwed up :( NT boot "Please restart your device and try again ..."

Hello,
I've installed CM internal to (2) NT 16GBs without incident, and I got stumbled by the n button not working with 1.4.1 that was on my third. Ultimately - I downgraded to 1.4.0, installed CM7, and then did the dumb thing.
I meant to hit wipe data and cache, and I clicked factory reset in CWM. (And at this point - it is stuck in a state where I can boot to CWM - but cannot get CM7 to boot in any form from the internal rom).
I attempted the following
1) acclaim restore (just tried didn't do anything)
2) backup / restore from alternate nook Tablet 16Gb (man this seemed promising ...)
3) couple of the different unbrick scenarios - but I don't have adb, and it seems like windows 7 is not a happy camper with nook usb devices, (and adb isn't happy either.)
4) meghd00t restores (couple of different variations.)
does anyone have any starter threads that I should start walking down for the same stuff - I have browsed, and it's been a couple of hours and I'm exhausted. will poke back in tommorow, and will get this thing plugged into a linux host.
It didn't seem like adb could be so hard ...
--Adrian
Hmmm interesting... ok first of all doing this "I meant to hit wipe data and cache, and I clicked factory reset in CWM" is not dumb is ok to do but is not good signal the hang actually is very weird. Maybe all you have is a corrupted cwm recovery flash. Now be explicit if you indeed could try some unbrick methods succesfully (the ones running from sdcard) and what methods exactly did you try.
~ Veronica
things I've tried - part 1
1) just try to restore to factory with acclaim_update.zip on non-booting sdcard , (this is the 1.4.0 image) - I get the grey n, a flash of white - (like it's going to boot), and that that "please restart your device and try again..."
(This worked when it was factory), but it seems like the logic to check the sd card and start to recover isn't working.
2) Tried the thread here - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1562130 - meghd00tr4-sdimg.zip boots, but first time - get red reverse highlighted line - "booti: bad boot image magic in memory" - s5 in the upper left corner of the cyanoboot screen, and the n button doesn't seem to do anything.
3) same thread different image - repart.img, this runs fine- and after about 30 seconds of boot, I get a green check, (waited a full (2) minutes after that green check before I unplugged it.) - same message after boot.
4) full restore of nook tablet from current good cm7 image (and this is the one that most concerns me) - NT16gbV4_6 based cwm v5.5.04 - attempting restore of backed up alternate nook tablet - and the exact same thing happens at boot - does the image not touch partions that aren't related to the root install -(this seems like maybe there is something the bootloader is looking for in the image that isn't right, and it wedges?)
I am going to work on getting an adb setup going that works and then start working down a couple of fix recovery scenarios today / tonight.
It doesn't seem like this is unrecoverable - and the worst part is -I had cm7 booting fine for a couple of reboots, and then something went awry.
--Adrian
as I think about this ...
I do have (2) differnt backups, and I wonder if that restore was the wrong thing to do.
I got to thinking this as I saw the restore of the .android_secure file, from the ALTERNATE nook. I have the backup from the 1.4.0 "original working" image of this nook before the cm 7 issues- but I put it on an SD card that is safetly out of my reach. (In a friends cell phone.)
I think an easy thing will be to restore that backup as another test.

In one of the flashes - must have hit the power prior to something being complete with the recovery.
thanks all for your support - and really appreciate the time in the forum. I'm going to put together a torrent with the recovery stuff in it, and make sure it's available as my little part. (Give me a day or so.)
Thanks again.

The problem with that is that you will lose your original serial ID's and MAC address if you didnt backup your rom partition (mmcblk0p5) first so if you use B&N services you wont be able to register after flash any stock rom.

I also screwed up...Reverting to 1.4.0
Tried to revert to 1.4.0, and followed all instructions as showned on a youtube video. Unfortunately, as it was reverting back to older version as soon as it finished the process - the tablet wouldn't start back up. Did any one ever have this happen to them.. Fortunately, I had just bought today at WalMart. So, I'm going to replace it...
Was just curious, if it ever happened to any one. If so what did I possibly do wrong....

ubuntu recovery.
This was strictly for CM7. I have no problem with being locked out of the B&N services. (I use the nook application for that access.)
Wish I would have known the serial number before / after. I was able to login to my B&N account after 1.4.0 was restored from ubuntu.

[Q] Rooted my nook Tablet and am puzzled

I hope I am in the right forum for this thread. I have plenty of questions and hope to get answers to a few..... Here goes -
A few weeks ago I bought a nook 16Gb Tablet essentially for my wife and created a CM7 SD card to allow using it in stock BN system as well as experiment with Android use from that card. The end result is I decided I needed one for myself so I wouldn't conflict with her use. I had months ago rooted my nook eink but regardless of its expanded capability it was still only a great ebook reader and hopeless as a web browser, etc. So bought a Certified Preowned 16Gb nook Tablet for myself and duplicated the CM7 SD card process and was able to switch between stock nook use and Andorid use from the SD card using the dual boot process. I found myself mostly in the Andorid side and began to wonder why I was keeping the unused nook side around. After a ton of forum reading I decided to root my tablet and leave my wife's in its dual boot format - undoubtedly a safe move....
I used this process:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1466583&page=24
it is titled:
How to root 1.4.1 (or any other version) using just an sdcard {easy}
and I followed the detailed steps and links from "liquidzoo" post #240. Creating the SD card for the rooting process was easy. It went well up to the point of the step of powering up after inserting the SD card in the powered down nook. It kept booting into the stock BN nook side by use of the power on button. It began booting to the SD card only after I allowed it to power up by plugging it into my pc with the usb cord. Then the following steps went fine after I discoverd I had to use the volume controls to step through the menu selections. Thereafter it did go smoothly through the process. When the process indicated it had completed powered off, removed the SD card, and powered up into Android.
It seems to be somewhat faster than using Android from a dual boot (CM7 on SD card). I guess I missed somewhere that it would have dual a home selection menu allowing the stock nook home menu choice along with Android - so the best of both worlds. I am still familiarizing my self with the new configuration but so the fiirst of a few questions are:
Aside from experimentation, is there any way of finding out what all the icons in the status bar are for on the vbarious screens? Some are obvious but at one point I had a flashing-inverted-chevron icon that seemed to be maybe a downloading indicator but I couldn't find what.
Is there a simple toggle to switch from nook to android screens? Seems to be several taps to achieve that.
How do I install the Amazon Android App? I can' seem to find it.
I'll probably reply to this with other questions after I do more experimenting but answers to these woiuld be helpful.
Thanks in advance. I'm still a noob so I can't post to the link above but I think somewhere I saw the ability to 'Thank' as well as 'Donate' - both of which I need to do now. I think I'm really going to like the newly configured nook Tablet.

First, read this.
Now, just so we're on the same page.
You created an sd card that allowed you to boot into a custom recovery and then using the volume up/down buttons, navigated to install and installed a zip file that allowed you to root the device correct?
If that is the case, you are still on the stock OS (as it sounds from your description). This is why you have both the stock B&N user interface (launcher) and a custom one (the one that looks more like cm7 did when booting from an sdcard).
Still have that custom recovery card? Here's my suggestion. Download a custom rom like cm7 and the appropriate gapps file (google apps, including the play store). Store these files on your internal storage. Next, boot back into the custom recovery and create a backup. Then, just as you did before, navigate to installing a zip and find the cm7 zip file you found before. Install the gapps zip file as well. When you're done, wipe data/factory reset and wipe cache. DO NOT FORMAT SYSTEM OR ANYTHING LIKE THAT (people do this for some reason, I don't understand why and it breaks things - don't do it.) Upon rebooting, you will no longer have the stock OS installed You will have a custom rom, cm7 installed.
The difference from your current setup is that right now, the core of the device is still based on B&N version of Android. The alternate user interface is nothing more than a tease of what Android is truly capable of. A custom rom opens up many more doors and should be a much smoother experience.
Any questions post them. And please read the first post of the thread I linked.

Also, I'm morally obligated to advise you to return the Nook and buy a Nexus 7, if you truly prefer the Google experience.

Thank you, Cubanluke88, for you thoughts and suggestions.
First, I did grab your first linked post and realized some misconceptions. I still need to digest it more thoroughly, though.
On the part of your response that I have edited out in the qoute, I also want to read more troroughly and pose some questions in a later response.
As for the final suggestion, I have been eyeing the Nexus 7 for some time ane even though it is a bit more expensive than the nook Tablet I currently own I think I might get it (or a similar device) when fortune and convenience presents itself. For now, I am still in a learning mode with the Android-like device I currentlhy have and need to read and educate myself further. As stated in my opening post - I am a noob - there is a lot of experimenting I need to do.
I will be replying with some questions after more reading and thought on your offered suggestions in the section I edited out for the time being.....

Cubanluke88,
Thanks again for giving me something to think about.
I have read/reread both of your linked posts and your complete response to my post. Further, it is useful to comment that with my nook Tablet hardware it is not at all important for me to have the BN OS. I have a classic nook eink that is totally satisfactory for anything I may need for BN usage alone - mostly, ebook purchase and reading. I purchased the tablet as a means to get access to Android applications not possible from the nook classic which was also hopeless as a general web access device. As a rooted Android device, I anticipate it's nook app to be satisfactory as an ebook reader as well.
Referring to the quoted segment of you initial response:
Still have that custom recovery card?
Yes.
Download a custom rom like cm7 and the appropriate gapps file (google apps, including the play store) Store these files on your internal storage..
Can you suggest a pointer? I get swamped and cofused on what to choose when I google. The verison I have filed on my PC is embedded in an SD image file and I suspect that is not what you were referring to ( I have: -->> "Team-B-CM7SD-Alpha_final.img".
By "internal storage" do you mean in the recovery card or within the Tablet through USB connection?
Next, boot back into the custom recovery and create a backup. Then, just as you did before, navigate to installing a zip and find the cm7 zip file you found before. Install the gapps zip file as well. When you're done, wipe data/factory reset and wipe cache.
The backup would be my current loaded system - in case I need to get back?
.
When you're done, wipe data/factory reset and wipe cache.
Is this a single menu item on the recovery card or separate commands?
I appreciate the help and apologise for the need for spoon feeeding but I hope it helps avoid making further mistakes......
One last thought, on the recovery card I downloaded and included "flash_B&N_Stock_v1.4.3_8-16gb_emmc" which I assume would restore to stock 1.4.3 BN version. Is that prossible? and would that be easier to do and start fresh?
Thanks in advance....

That .img file is what you used to create the sdcard your wife and you used. Just as with the recovery sd card, you take said .img file and burn it to it to create a "bootable" sdcard. Thats not what we want to do now (if you're ready to replace the stock OS). Go to this thread for cm7. See where it says "Internal version 8GB & 16GB Compatiable?" Grab that. That is the rom zip file itself. To get gapps, youll need cm7 compatible gapps, found here.
By "internal storage" do you mean in the recovery card or within the Tablet through USB connection?

By internal storage, I'm referring to the internal storage on the Nook itself. (like what you see when you mount it via USB on your computer). It should come up as "My Nook" or something to that effect. If you store the rom zip file here, you will be able to boot into recovery via the sdcard you created, navigate to the internal storage and find the zip file and install it. Now personally, I would recommend, that if you plan on using internal roms, that you should also change the internal recovery to a custom one. With an internal custom recovery, you could swap between various roms without ever needing to use that recovery sd card. You would simply boot into recovery, grab the zip file for whatever custom rom you want to use and install it.
The easiest way to get a custom recovery is via this app here. Simply install the app and flash the custom recovery within it. Its also a great tool to return to stock recovery should you ever need to.
The backup would be my current loaded system - in case I need to get back?

Its in the recovery menu there right at the front. You should see something like reboot system, apply sdcard, wipedata/factory reset, wipe cache, install zip, backup and restore. Backup/restore to backup your current installation, install zip to install the rom + gapps, and wipe data/factory reset + wipe cache after installation.

Read much of the following thread and while I think it will be simpler in the future I assume I can do that at any time. Right?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1458630
Albert Wertz's youtube video throws a lot of stuff into the process which looks very interesting but I think I'll "crawl" around a bit and use recovery card for little longer while I become more familiar with a rooted tablet.
I grabbed the CM7 and gapp zips you pointed to and I'm going to give that a whirl with my current recovery card and post back with results - hopefully good......
Note that if you install cm7 to the device, you are not simply on a "rooted" tablet anymore. You will be on a custom rom that also happens to have root access (most custom roms do). Its also worth noting that cm7 is a custom rom based on Android 2.3.4, so the roms capabilities and limitations will be subsequently limited to what cm7 is capable of. The latest version of Android is 4.1 and we are lucky enough to have a custom rom (cm10) in development based on it.

undeeded apps
Been doing some exploring and contemplating addition of a few apps. However, some of the apps loaded with CM7 and Gapps (like car home, phone, camera to name a few) don't make sense on a nook tablet - unless I'm missing a reason they should be there. What is the best way of uninstalling/deleting these or any I may install but discover no need for?

What is the best way of uninstalling/deleting these or any I may install but discover no need for?
TIA....

They're there because cm7 is a port of a phone based OS (Android 2.3 was designed for phones). You can disable them but I believe camera is tied to gallery so that could screw up picture viewing and phone might be tied to contacts so that could screw up your contacts database if you use gmail. If you have a file explorer that has root access (I use root explorer, paid app in play store), you can navigate to /system/apps and all the apks for those apps (system apps) are found there. You can add a ".bak" extension to each one, then reboot and see if anything breaks. If for some reason things break really badly, you can always reboot to recovery and just flash the rom on top of it again.
