I think what he's getting at is does it show up in the website stats of who has visited that you are using a desktop (pc) or an Android phone. If it doesn't show Android phone he thinks that's what's accounting for people saying that more people surf the web with iphones than with Android phones.
So he's not asking about using desktop mode on the phone, just how it looks to the website logs/stats when you use desktop mode on your phone to access them.

What he's trying to say:
Most statistics show that more people are surfing the net with iOS devices than with Android. Android has the ability to surf the web as if it were a desktop client. Are websites able to tell the difference between a desktop and an Android device running as a desktop client? If they aren't able to, then their numbers are wrong and Android is the clear winner.
Been watching this thread like a hawk. Some chick is trolling on a news sight, and arguing that it isn't possible. I say it isn't possible on an iPhone.

And with that said, we will never know the true stats.
Thanks for letting me know it is possible on iOS. I am not starting a pissing match. I am just trying to show that a lot of people use 3rd party browsers on Android, and they have the ability out of the box. By the way, I really like the iPad mini. Damn nice little tablet. Not enough to buy it, but find it to a very nice experience.

i had a mytouch 4g and tried going to Hulu on regular browser settings but none of the videos would play because Mobile was not supported. when i did some research i found out you can install a modded Flashplayer app and then Customize the browser settings by typing in the URL about:config and then the menu key and setting the USER AGENT to Desktop. after doing all that, i finally went to Hulu's website and was now able to view every video they had. So if Hulu still read my phone as a phone, i wouldnt of been able to view their videos. but i was. so maybe it is possible that sites dont recognize if youre on your phone.
That is what I thought. Hbogo, and Maxgo also allow watching videos from desktop mode in the browser with that mod. I just wanted someone with coding experience that could explain it better. Googling it doesn't seem to get anywhere.

My real estate business software that I have use was specifically designed to ONLY work on I.E. How, how can I get it to work on my Galaxy Tab 10.1. ? I am very concerned it wont work. Thanks
Lol.. you should just slap the developer of that software for using Internet Explorer.
It's very hard to tell you how to fix something until you've tried it and know for sure it doesn't work, and why. If it's a matter of crappy code that browsers besides IE barf on, then you may be able to work around it somehow. If it's using ActiveX or some IE-only feature, you're out of luck.
The best workaround to use a windows only application is to run it on your desktop at your work or home and then connect to it using a service like VNC.
A very good and easy to set up solution is to use Splashtop Remote HD (9.99 in the Market) and run the streamer on your host PC. http://www.splashtop.com/remote
This will allow you to use any windows application on your tablet.

Not that it's necessarily the case here, but UA spoofing is probably not going to be the issue.
Most websites that are "For IE ONLY" either are written to conform to the arcane and stupid rendering of Internet explorer (pre version 8), or use ActiveX, neither of which can be spoofed with a UA string change.

The question was what would work... You just copied the answer from above. The discussion was not about the best remote app...... I guess you haven't figured that out yet..along with that black status bar
For a few days now, my touchpad is redirecting to mobile-sites.
For example: when I want to visit: www.hln.be , I get redirected to m.hln.be.
This is very anoying because the screen is perfect for non-mobile sites.
How can I change the settings so I always go to the non-mobile sites?
Just scroll to bottom of page and choose to view the normal site?

What part of "always" don't you understand?
He wants to change the user-agent, so that the Touchpad always goes to the desktop version, like on Android, where you can chose desktop or tablet.
Would love to know as well, as occasionally I come across a mobile website, which is annoying (and they often don't have a view full version button...)
Even on Android that doesn't always work though, I do dislike websites that think they know better than I do what I want
The worst abuse of it is sites that user agent sniff and think Opera is only a mobile browser and give you the mobile site when you're on a desktop PC
McDonalds used to have this problem and runnersworld.com
Maybe if you install the Hulu Fix from preware it will fix the problem since it changes the user agent to Linux.
Not sure if it will work but you can try.
There's a certain website I frequent on my PC that allows me to stream episodes of breaking bad, etc. It's a pretty simple straightforward search engine that links you to a streaming flash video. When I try from my phone, it brings me to a version of the site which only allows me to search and then download the file instead of streaming it.
Is there any workaround / fix / app that will trick the site into thinking I'm on a PC?
Thank you

Basically all of the third party browsers allow you to change user-agents. I really like the default browser, if only it gives option to do permanent desktop mode or allow switching like third party browsers do.
There is a way to change the stock browser to do desktop mode, but it is only per session. if you close the browser and reopen it goes back to mobile view.
I use dolphin hd set to desktop user agent, allows for streaming on hulu and full turntable.fm

i use maxthon. you can change to desktop or other browser types in the option. if you use it on your pc or laptop too you can sync all uour bookmarks and stuff with it after you sign in. its faster than google chrome on a computer and the fastest ive found for my atrix. hopes this helps.
I use both Dolphin HD and Opera, but Dolphin doesn't work properly on this site. If you're in a thread with multiple pages the button for the last page is covered so it's difficult to get to, and if you try to search the thread the search pops up and disappears immediately. The back button on Dolphin doesn't work well if you click a link in Yahoo - you have to hit back multiple times before it works. Most sites do work ok though.
The stock CM7 browser will let you change user agents to Linux desktop, Mac desktop, Froyo, Eclair, iPhone, iPad and IE6

does anyone know the correct way to spoof webpages into thinking your using the site from a honeycomb tablet? Right now, most sites will give the phone version of website rather than a tablet optimized version. On Dolphin HD you are able to try a few different user agents, but the only tablet one is the iPad. This works good for most websites but i feel like there is a benifit to being seen as a android tablet rather than as an iPad. I know i could just switch it to desktop mode but then that would ignore tablet optomized versions of sites.
Dolphin does have a custom user agent category, but i dont know what a user agent for a android tablet (such as the galaxy tab 10.1) would be. I tried using just "Android 3.0" and i got the tablet version of google to work (normally you get a mobile version). I dont really have a HC tablet to test out to see if my touchpad is getting the correct version of the site. Anyone have any suggestions?
and yes i know there is not a whole lot of tablet optimized sites at the moment.
In the default Android browser enter in the URL "about:debug". You won't see anything happen, but if you open the menu and go to settings you should see some new options to select from. Scroll down and you'll notice a new section labeled "Debug". Under here you will find the "UAString" setting. From here you can set it up as an iPad or even a desktop browser.
If you want to check which browser your device is using, you can always go to a site like FindMeByIP.com which can tell you what browser you are using.

Another thing I've noticed is that you can't use the tablet version of say... Yahoo.com/tablet optimally because the window in WebOS's internet browser is movable.
That means that when you try to slide through news stories, it doesn't work because the whole window moves.

Hi,
I like working on the website Codeacademy.com, and would love to do so on my android tablet (kindle HD), or even my phone (razr HD). However, every browser I've tried has had a terrible time with this website: browsers love to zoom in too closely when I start typing, they have trouble scolling in a text window within the main window, etc. (just try it, you'll see what I mean).
Does anyone have any suggestions for a browser that would fare better? Or perhaps dolphin has an add-on that would mitigate the problems? I have trouble believing that I'm the only one who likes to use this popular website on an android device.
Any help is appreciated.
EDIT: The kindle is restricted in its browsers by default, but I haven't had any trouble downloading apks and sideloading, so that's not a limitation to worry about.
Me too
I am looking for it too. It would be awesome if codecademy made an android app for its exercises

Agreed-- though I feel like they shouldn't have to! This website isn't doing anything particularly advanced--it's just a text box to type in--and I feel like one of the myriad android browsers should be able to handle it. Especially since each one has a different unique problem with the website.
Okay, looks like Maxthon browser works tolerably well. Good browser overall, actually.
Jwdink,
Good to know Maxthon worked for you. I tested many, including Maxthon, and I always get the same problem.
When I click on the box to type, and try to move it up or down, everything goes white and I have to find the box again...
I tested with chrome, opera, firefox, dolphin, dolphin beta, and others less known browsers, and always the same problem happens
Now I'm gonna test with firefox beta..
I emailed codecademy some days ago concerning this matter but got no answer
Did you notice the site doesn't have a mobile version? Maybe if they can create one, it could fix the problem

Maxthon didn't fare to well for this task on my rooted Kindle Fire running Gingerbread .......I sometimes have success with the latest release of Firefox (not the nightly edition) but many times will have to refresh the page to get the coding input box to respond "halfway" normal.
Even on my Windows 7 laptop the site has issues and I've tried IE9 and the latest Chrome. Maybe I'll try Firefox on the laptop today. On the tablet I find myself reading the tutorial from the website on whatever browser I'm using but will not try to implement the code there. I'll just open up my good old text editor and code there using what I learned on the site and then run the code on "x" interpreter (in my case the Python) and it's much easier to do it that way.
When I have the lesson running correctly I will return to the website and "attempt" to complete it on there either possibly with Android Firefox or on the PC so it will keep track of my progress. Otherwise I would get WAY to frustrated trying to get every little step to run in the browser's input box!
And yes, a dedicated app for this website would be ideal

I don't think its very effective to work on codeacademy from your tablet especially if you aren't using a real keyboard. Codecademy has problems with browsers in osx and windows and I can't imagine how it would work on a tablet which browsers that do much less. Codecademy gives me issues everytime I use it, some courses are sometimes impossible to complete unless codecademy themselves fixes them. Python last summer was uncompletable due to weird errors which tooks weeks to fix.
Also, something you should be doing is after you complete courses, go make something with your newly gained knowledge. I can go through every single course in there and might not have a full understanding without actually making something, plus, you have to get used to dealing with the unexpected because everytime you code, theres going to be some problem. You can't code much things comfortably in Android either, at least I haven't been able to.
Try using ucbrowser.
I've tried Firefox, dolphin, boat and maxthon but for me uc browser works best. I'm talking about web browsing in general, uc browser is my pick for mobile web browsing. I've never visited code academy on ucbrowser though. Give it a shot

Foxfire & disable autocorrect/autocomplete
To use codecademy on my rooted Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 (n8013) tablet I used Foxfire (stable or beta) browser and I disabled the keyboard's autocorrection/autofill/autocapitalization functionalities.
Tested but couldn't use stock browser, Chrome, Dolphin and Opera. Tested but couldn't use Swype keyboard and Google downloadable keyboard. Something weird happens connected to the shift key.
Should say my Samsung's running stock (Cyanagenmod) Android 4.2.2, no bloatware. Don't know if that matters or not.

Hey,
Im trying to use codecademy and khanacademy.org but im using a Sony Xperia Z2 Tablet (stock rom). Ive tried UC browser as well as many others (chrome, naked, firefox, dolphin, maxthon, boat, maybe more) with no luck. Code isnt selectable or pastable, and sometimes i cant even delete.
I dont have access to a computer at the moment and would really like to take advantage of the interactive tutorials on those sites. I even bought a mouse thinking it would make text selection easy but i now realise android mouse support is lame and just emulates a finger.
If anyone has any solution for this, please let me know.

Hello jwdink,
Thank you for asking this question almost two years ago. Like you, I recently stumbled across the delimma of learning to code at codeacademy.com with my nextbook tablet device.
The solution that works perfectly for me is to request the desktop version of the web browser.

The page will reload automatically to a closer version of codeacademy that you are familiar with on the desktop site.
