[Q] Flashing custom recovery through mobile odin? - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Okay maybe this will come out as silly question but; Can I flash Custom Recovery like CWM-Touch through Mobile Odin ?
If I can, then should I put the recovery.zip file in KERNEL option in mobile odin or that one of UPDATE ZIP ?
For some ungodly reasons, I am not able to connect my SGS2 to computer so can't flash kernel from desktop odin :/
Thank you !

Yes I did. I even uninstalled usb drivers & Kies and tried fresh install couple of times but computer simply refuses to detect phone. Also tried different cable, different ports. But No MTP, no mass storage nothing works. I have been facing this problem from a while too. Maybe I messed it up when I installed so many different ROM and kernels in past several weeks.

I we installed so many roms myself but didn't have any problems.
You can install kernel thrugh stock recovery if the zip file is signed and in the internal sdcard root folder yust to rename it update.zip

Dont flash thatrecovery use this one: http://www.mediafire.com/?6mjg46ocf6srv30
Just rename it to update.zip an put it in the /sdcard 0 (internal sdcard- on the phone)
Go to recovery (volume up+home button+lockscreen button) and flash the file.

I have got this file "recovery-clockwork-touch-5.8.1.5-galaxys2.zip" from CWM website itself (1.5MB).
So should I just rename it "update.zip" and flash through stock recovery ?

Sory for the late response.
Yes it is it says at the title of the thread [28.11.2012][PhilZ-cwm6][i9100]v3.72 Safe Stock Kernel+CWM6_No BrickBug_Root_XXLSJ
No problem

I know this thread was resolved, but the topic is still one that I am interested in. My Galaxy Nexus, Toro, has a failed USB port. I tried Mobile Odin with an old ICS image, but it didn't flash, I assume, because I'm running AOKP 4.2. Regardless, I have no recovery of any kind, stock or otherwise now. It just sticks at the Google screen when I attempt recovery. The AOKP still boots fine, however. I need to return this unit to Verizon in a few days. I'd like to at least get a custom recovery back, and try flashing an ICS build of AOKP and try another Mobile Odin.

Ok. Well. How about Goomanager from the market. Just hit menu and click "Install OpenRecovery Script". Reboot into recovery like a boss. TWRP FTW!! Ok. Now the topic of this thread is SOLVED.

are you retarded? no one answered the question the question was what area do you load the recovery in to flash it in mobile odin. you all gave him alternate routes to get the same outcome but you totally avoided his question. now i will restate the problem
WHAT AREA IN MOBILE ODIN DO YOU LOAD A RECOVERY .TAR??????

Mate, this is an old thread. The OP only wanted to get a CWM recovery, which he did get.
Now why would you bring up this thread again? And please be polite while posting. Showing disrespect and shouting are against forum rules.

It would still be helpful to get the answer as to how to flash a recovery .tar with odin, since this thread shows up when you search for this.
Many searches for strange problems gives several hits, but when you read through them, there's only answers to other problems.

[Q] Samsung Galaxy S2 Wont Boot..

Hey guys,
I need some expertise on this, I tried looking up my exact problem but I couldn't find any real help so here I am. I just recently upgraded to ICS and all went well. Then I decided to root with Siyah kernel with ODIN and all was good. My problem is that when I tried to do the ROM backup with ROM manager it didn't boot back up and now every time I try to boot it up it goes to the Samsung Galaxy SII GT-19100 screen... Any help would be greatly appreciated.

You won't be fixing it without Odin with no recovery. Go thru the following list on your PC, and if you still can't get Odin working, try another PC. If you still can't get Odin working on another PC, user error somewhere along the way (will be impossible for anyone here to say what because we're not there with you), which means service centre job.
*Must run Odin as administrator in Windoze.
*Ensure Kies & it's processes aren't running in Windoze task manager. Kill them if they are.
*Try different USB ports; you must be using a 'powered' or mainboard port.
*Try different USB cables (particularly the cable that came with the phone if you're not using it now)
*Try different versions of Odin (search on here/Google)
*Uninstall Kies, reboot, redownload & reinstall it, reboot, try the flash again. Also run Windoze Update.
*Check the rom/kernel you download for corruption. Programs like 7Zip, IZarc, WinRar, etc will allow you to 'test' the rom file you download. If there are any errors/any of the files fail the test, bad download. Try again/try downloading with a different internet connection if it keeps happening.

Stuck at yellow triangle boot screen. Help

So my friend has been using this site for over a year rooting his HTC Desire and said I should look into rooting my S2, and because the S2 is quite a popular phone it should be an easy hack. So I obliged and downloaded Odin and used this file.\CF-Root-SGS2_ZS_OZS_KG2-v4.1-CWM4\CF-Root-SGS2_ZS_OZS_KG2-v4.1-CWM4.tar.
I put my phone into download mode, followed every step perfectly and it said the download was a success/pass. Now when I try to boot my phone back up it goes to the Samsung Galaxy S2 GT-I9100 screen, with a yellow triangle with an ! in the middle. And it wont boot anymore from there.
If this is an easy fix, or if there's an easy way to do this, I apoligize I'm a phone noob. Thanks for any help.

1. make sure you're in the right forum for your device, and used the right file. What is your model number? (printed on the label under the battery)
2. where did you get that file? (CF-Root-SGS2_ZS_OZS_KG2-v4.1-CWM4)
3. did you make a note of what your original kernel version was before you began? (this may be too much to hope for)

Yikes. That thread says:
CF-Root Thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1103399
We do not have a CF-Root version of our kernel so just flash any kernel using the instructions provided in the link and flash the stock kernel back (found below). Root will remain as well as the CWM app but you will loose clockwork mod recovery.

Which is very VERY vague, and is probably why it screwed up. You can't just flash ANY kernel - it has to be one close to the one you already have. For example, if you had ICS on the phone, and flashed an older Gingerbread kernel (which the one you downloaded is version KG2, is an older Gingerbread kernel build), then the phone wouldn't boot.

If you didn't know what version you had, then there really isn't a way to recover without flashing a whole firmware.
Download an I9100M firmware from http://samsung-updates.com/device/?id=GT-I9100M and flash that to get back to ICS. Then go back to the CF-root thread, and make sure to read the instructions in post 1. Pay particular attention to the part that says "Help! Which file do I use ?"

Only if the phone shipped with the UGKG2 build (you have one too many "k"s in there) of Android. (which isn't guaranteed).
Ok so I have that file downloaded, and I downloaded the correct file from that site. Now I'm trying to install the firmware onto my phone, but its in MD5 format, and not .TAR. I tried googling how to fix this but couldnt find anything, how would I go about changing the file so that Odin can pick it up?

EDIT to add: according to this post, you can use LP7 for rooting LD3.

Boot your phone to download mode. (volume down- home - power)
Download the latest Siyah Kernel (6.05b (the tar file)).
Start ODIN on your PC.
Press the PDA-button, and add the SiyahKernel file.
Connect your phone to a USB drive while it's on download mode.
Press "Start" on ODIN.
Now, if this doesn't work, download another version of ODIN. After trying all the versions, try all those versions again on a different USB port. If you STILL can't flash it, try another computer (and all the USB ports on that). If it still doesn't work, you probably have need for service.
I did this on my phone yesterday, and ODIN 1.85 worked on (only) one of my USB ports, so by all means, start with 1.85 first.

Siyah v6 is for JB mate. That's the reason things got messed up. For 4.0.4, you should have used Siyah v5.0.1.

Since u can flash successfully with Odin, simply flash the stock firmware for ur device and it should boot up without issues. I suggest u flash either 4.0.3 or 4.1.2.

Like I already mentioned, Siyah v6 is for stock JB. The OP has 4.0.4, so flashing the latest Siyah v6 will still result in bootloop.
And the other steps you mentioned are for when Odin flash fails. I don't think the OP has mentioned Odin flash failing yet. He has only told of being stuck in a bootloop.

But out the idea that I knew what I was doing, I forgot to check if I was patching the correct CWM, which I didn't which has caused it not to boot past the initial galaxy SII GTI9100 screen; with the exclamation mark. After an hour or so of searching, I think I found the correct CWM which I could flash in Odin [the .tar version, since CWM's website only offers the .zip], but even that has not worked for me. I still can only boot into download mode and I cannot access recovery mode.
Can any of you guys help me in any way? I've checked other threads and I haven't found anything too similar apart from a Galaxy Tab that couldn't get into recovery mode. I'm using the XXLPQ insecure kernel and stock ROM if you need to know that.

Can you be a little more specific please? All I can see it .zip files and I'm not sure which file you mean to try. I'm using ICS by the way.

Solved the problem. Flashed on a stock ROM and I'll do things again by scratch. Can an admin close this thread down?

As for now there isn't to much work... Could you post some info about kernel and ROM in Mega? I need to know how it works in Samsung devices... There is some list of different kernels and roms for different regions. Is it possible to flash soft for another region and what are consequences? I have rooted new Mega second day from purchasing and only after that realised so chosen method replace original kernel for special one. Somebody advised me to flash stock kernel... but which one? I did not write down the name of original kernel from Settings. And what is interesting, my original rom isn't listed on this list... Is it safe to flash newest stock rom's ? They are of different regions? What are differences?
If you can answer these questions, then your theme will actually make sense. Till now there are only 2 links to another people themes. It's not to much...

Ok. Some questions:
1. Are the roms and kernels from different regions interchangeable? What could happen if I flash kernel from another region?
2. Should roms and kernels be 'paired' - from Adam's Lange "OFFICIAL ROMS COLLECTION" Thread is possible to download stock rom's and kernels from different regions. Is it necessary to flash kernel 'paired' with rom from region?
3. What about 'counter' which counts number of flashing software to phone? Is it possible to avoid increasing this counter and what are consequences of increasing this counter if I will need to use warranty repair? I'm affraid now is to late, because I have already rooted my Mega.
4. After flashing stock kernel not 'paired' with my stock rom (to avoid two red lines which are effect of rooting with use Mega_6.3_vcore_root_v2.tar0 i have random softreboots. Could it be because of different regions of rom and kernel? Is it reasonable to flash stock rom anew?
5. Is flashing stock rom wipe all user data? If I plan to flash anew stock rom for my country should i make backup of apps? And what about root after such flashing?
Sorry for lame questions, but I am not experienced in Samsung system and maybe went o early in rooting business... will be very grateful for some words of wisdom...
1. Kernels from same device type can be cross flashed but not from say i9205 to a att version that will end in disaster. However no real point as all kernels virtually same.
2. As above
3.not really easy to avoid. Samsung will check if sent in for warranty and can use as excuse to charge if set to custom
4.not kernel issue so look elsewhere I.e dirty flash
5. Depends on stock rom most do not wipe user data or apps but everyonce in a while they may I.e moving bases etc

OK. I decided to flash stock rom from my region. Could you advise how to do it in details? By Odin? I have downloaded firmware - .zip file with .tar and .dll inside. How to proceed?
If you don't mind me helping..open odin and make sure only Auto Reboot and F. Reset Time are checked and the others are not checked and then click on the PDA button and find the .tar or md5 file of your stock rom as the .dll file you do not need and once you find your .tar file or md5 file click on the open button and it will put into the PDA window and leave odin open.
Now put your phone into download mode have phone off first by holding the vol-down + power button together and you should fell a vibration and a warning screen should appear and release the buttons and then push on the vol-up button and it should now be in download mode, now connect your phone to your pc and with odin open you should see in the ID:COM window the first window light up showing that your phone is connect, then with everything ready as described earlier in this post click on the start button and odin will begin flashing the rom to your device and when done your phone will automatically reboot and then you can unplug the usb cord from your phone.
When flashing a new rom the phone will take a while to get everything working so give it some time and then it will start and you can then fill your info in like a new rom. :good:

I usually do not wipe anything myself and it always works installing a new rom..that part is totally up to you as you really do not need to do it.

I am not sure with CWM but with TWRP recovery once you go into it tap on backup and you should see were it says internal storage or something similar to that..just tap on that and you can set it for external micro sd card or usb OTG and i believe it will not work if you use the compression..it didn't work for me anyways that way..just leave compression off and choose what you want to backup as 3 things will be selected already and that will do that way, but you can add the other 3 if you like also..then swipe the big button at the button and backup should begin..on some phones this backup to sd micro card does not work..but if it does not just try again as in some cases it will work the second time..but not on all devices this will work..this is only if you have TWRP recovery installed on your device. :good:
Update: Okay i did a backup to the external micro sd card and i enabled compression and it worked this time..sometimes it just takes a few tries for it to work.

Back/Search button not working.

Hello ,
I recently got a samsung galaxy s2 i777 at&t , everything was working just fine until i installed jelly bean 4.1.2 !
But the problem is i installed jelly bean i9100 international version , im still a noob and i didn't know that.
The phone is working fine but the back and search button are not responsive i already did a factory reset/wipe and i installed some roms
like UCKH7_stock_root but that didn't help.
Any suggestions ?
Thanks in advance !
The key mapping is different for the button configuration on the I9100. It is possible to use I9100 firmware on the I777 but you must use a kernel made for the I777, and there are a few other modifications that would be necessary such as the key mapping file.
You should probably flash SGH-I777 firmware, either stock or custom. You can do some reading in the forums here to see what is available. The stock 4.1.2 UCMD8 for the I777 is available in the Download Repository.
Please post a link to the I9100 firmware that you flashed, and I will be able to tell you how exactly to proceed. We need to know if you flashed the I9100 secondary boot loader or not.

Just download Shostock3 ROM from the SGH-I777 Android Development forum and get into recovery and, Wipe data/factory reset->
Clear cache->
Go to mounts and storage->Format system->
Get back and go to advanced-> Wipe dalvik cache->
Get back and choose install new zip-> Flash your Shostock3 zip. Done. Hope this helped

No big deal if you have flashed an I9100 ROM. U wont brick your phone as far as you can enter the recovery. Jus do the above. U'l be good to go.

Did you flash the SHOstock3 zip from recovery?
Definitely hardware problem. I mean if you clean flashed an i777 ROM(Maybe Shostock3 as per my suggestion) an you still cant get the buttons working, then it certainly is hardware issue.

Or maybe he didn do a proper flash. And its not about jumping to conclusions. I have had this problem twice, all I did was jus clean install an I777 ROM and everything was back in work again. I have this experience. So i thought it could be an hardware issue..or maybe an unclean flash which I didnt include above.

@creepyncrawly This is the ROM he flashed.
http://www.teamandroid.com/2013/02/...lly-bean-firmware-galaxy-s-ii-i9100-download/
This is the official JB. I have no idea here. I thought he flashed an custom ROM. But this is an I9100 official JB. There maybe a different solution for this and I certainly have no idea.

I'm downloading the file now to see exactly what is in there. May take up to an hour. I'll post suggestions after I look at it.
So , what are the results creepyncrawly ?
@AdnaneHMD,
The firmware you installed, "I9100XWLSD_I9100ITVLS1_I9100XXLS8_HOME" contains the I9100 secondary bootloader. You may find that when you try to put your phone into download mode, the regular I777 sequence of holding down both volume buttons while plugging in the USB cable will not work for you. This behavior is governed by the secondary bootloader, and I am pretty sure that the I9100 sequence is different.
You will need to first flash the SGH-I777 secondary bootloader (sbl.bin) by itself using Odin. You can find the .tar file you need in the Download Repository. Link is in my signature. Put the sbl.tar in the PDA slot.
First, open Odin on your desktop. Odin3 v1.85 is preferable. If the regular sequence does not work, you can put your phone into download mode with a jig, if you have one. Or you can try this: pull the battery and leave it out. Then hold down vol down (or both volume buttons) while plugging in the USB cable. The computer will provide the power.
If you had to flash with the battery out, remove the USB cable and insert the battery, and start the phone. The regular I777 sequence for download mode should now work.
Next, you want to flash the SGH-I777 stock firmware full package. You will find an Odin flashable tar version in the Download Repository. I would suggest that you flash the 4.1.2 UCMD8 version. Once the phone boots, you should be fully working. Now, if you want to root I would suggest you use Framaroot with the Aragorn exploit. Then you can install Mobile Odin Lite or Mobile Odin Pro and use it to install a custom kernel followed by custom firmware. Or you can leave your phone unrooted and stock if you prefer.
If you have questions, please ask. I will be traveling out of town later today, so will be away from the computer over night.

@AdnaneHMD,
1.) Odin3 flashable tar: i777 UCKH7 sbl.tar (Thanks to agh1701)
Use Odin3 v1.85 or v1.82 and put the sbl.tar in the PDA slot.
2.) This is the complete stock UCMD8 Binaries downloaded from samfirmware at sammobile.com. Please note, this package contains boot.bin, sbl.bin and param.lfs, plus cache.img, factoryfs.img, hidden.img, modem.bin and zImage. I777UCMD8 Full Odin Flashable tar: I777UCMD8_I777ATTMD8_I777UCMD8_HOME.tar.md5.7z 427.02 MB (Contains I777UCMD8_I777ATTMD8_I777UCMD8_HOME.tar.md5)

The assumption I have been using is that your phone was working normally with no issues until you flashed the I9100 stock firmware and then immediately upon rebooting the buttons failed. If that scenario it's accurate, then it's a pretty good chance, in fact almost a certainty, that the issue is firmware related, and not a hardware failure.
However, if the above is true, then the fix I suggested should have corrected the issue. Since it did not, we need to find where the facts deviate from the above. Look in about phone and report what firmware is currently installed. Then we need to know, would it be before you flashed the I9100 firmware, or during the return to I777 firmware?

OK, try this file:
https://copy.com/knvYJ
It's a flashable zip file that will restore the key libs to their i777 orientation. In the old days it was one of the files we used to rely on when we were manually porting 9100 roms via recovery only.
This should solve your problem... but then again, creepy's method also should have worked! Regardless, try it and let us know.
