A little background before someone reams me for not searching. I got a TF201 32GB from Best Buy (refurb), so yay I am new to the party (albiet very late). This is my first tablet and I just want to make sure I have all my ducks in a row before I attempt to do anything.
My prime is running the latest JB (was hoping it would be ICS when I got it due to what I had been reading here... alas it wasn't). I have read that in order to root this thing I have to unlock the bootloader. I have already downloaded that and installed it (haven't actually run it yet). I have also installed the naked adb drivers on my windows 7 box, and confirmed that I can see my device when i run adb devices. So... off to the questions...
Are there any known issues using the unlock tool to unlock a JB tf201 (Asus site says it is for ICS)?
If I follow this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1929189 should I be good to go?
If so can someone point me to the latest recovery.blob file (I searched for it but it returned a ton of results)?
Thanks!
Only problems using the unlock tool is that some tablets have been unable to unlock with it.
I unlocked from JB using it no probs.
May I suggest using this guide http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1998359
Install TWRP then flash Energy Rom from here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1982156 far far better than stock rom
Good luck follow guides and hopefully all will be OK

I second this. While I am still locked for a bit longer due to warranty period I am sure when I unlock I will be using TWRP and Energy Roms. TWRP has the best results according to posts I have read and I have used Energy Roms on other devices and always found them to be superior. The device should be rooted with that replacement ROM.

Oh and I meant to add that I hope unlocking works for you. The number one group of people having difficulty unlocking are those with repaired (refurbished) systems who's serial number arent in the ASUS database.

So with this method at what point are you rooted? I am unlocked right now. If I flash TWRP and then put a new ROM on like Energy Rom is that when I'll be rooted? With the new ROM? Or is there a way to root while still running stock ROM?
UPDATE: Never mind, I went ahead with it all anyway. Didn't realize that energy rom was basically stock only rooted.

I think N8G would be insulted....... You could have rooted Stock with Urkels Fresh Start but flashing a pre-rooted rom works too.

Energy Rom is based on stock rom but is far from just stock with root. It runs far smoother, faster and responsive.
I agree with hx4700 Killer it is an insult to call it just stock with root
I rooted today using the method in my OP (first updating the blob file to 2.3). Everything went smooth. How good is this Energy ROM? My experience w/ ROMs has left a bad taste in my mouth (droid x2). I don't want to flash it and find out things don't work right.

All I can Give is an Honest Opinion
When I flashed Energy Rom and tested it my first thoughts was " now this is how my prime should have been from the start "
I have flashed many roms on many phones etc mainly for extra features etc but this is first rom where I have undoubtably noticed speed, stability & responsive improvements
Have a read of the thread for Energy rom you will see its just not my opinion
Finally installed Energy. So far it rocks. Let's say asus comes out with a new update and Energy's dev gets hit by a bus. Is there a way to convert the official update into a zip I can install?

Received my Prime today and so far I love it. I couldn't help rooting it and unlocking it, so where do I go from now?
How do I go about installing say Clockworkmod, and do I need it to install custom ROMs? I've read about Androidroot's bootloader, but I don't wanna install it. Seems a bit too dangerous for me to even attempt, especially on a device that's only a few hours old (like 10h).
EDIT: Think I'll go with TeamEOS 3 Jellybean builds.
hi there,
for me the main reason to root and unlock my prime was to run linux on it, using it as allday work machine.
first step was to use a chroot environment under android, second was to try the port of lilstevie.
i think you only need the changed bootloader for that kind of things, otherwise only unlock the device using the
asus tool, and afterwards root it (installing the su apk) by any method around.
for custom roms, you don't have to use one, but they sometimes have cool additional features
hope that gives you a little expression.

Is there a way to root the tf201 running stock JB while keeping it's bootloader locked ?
I have tried running over all the threads here to find an answer and it seems to me that all methods to root the tablet requires flashing of a new boot loader..

There is a serious aversion to searching on this board even a cursory browsing of all the forums would yield the answer because it is asked every day.
In short, NO, not without unlocking.
Thank you for the reply..
The main issue I have with unlocking the bootloader is that i will not be able to get future updates from asus.. Maybe there is a method to get rooted by unlocking and maintaining the original bootloader?

Root and recovery are not really related..
If you are running the stock recovery you should be able to use ASUS apk to unlock it.. Then you can flash your custom recovery and change to whatever rom you like, just make sure you are flashing a JB ROM.
I am running the stock recovery and stock JB.
Every time I enter the input the info in the stock ASUS unlock apk it fails. I have read several places that it only works on ICS and that ASUS turned it off anyway. (although I haven't tried it in a week or so since everyone seems to think it doesn't work at all anymore; I will try it tonight)
Or is there a hacked ASUS apk that will unlock on JB and/or without talking to the ASUS server?

I unlocked mine on JB just a few days ago. The tool still works with JB (the notice on the site is outdated).
Some people have noticed that some primes (especially ones that have been repaired) don't want to unlock for some reason.
There is no way to unlock other than the official tool.

The reason the unlock fails is because the serial number is not showing up in ASUS DB to provide the unlock code. The unlocker communicates with ASUS to get an unlock key for each serial number and if your not in their DB well.... No unlock for you.
I did verify the sticker matches the digital serial number. I had hoped they would be different so I could update the digital one.
Anyone have a good contact at ASUS that would check/update their database?
The emails I have had with them so far have not been very helpful.
Edit:
I wonder if I change my digital serial number to one that someone else has already used to unlock will it send the unlock code for that serial number to me? And would it work? Or would I brick my Prime?

Did you RMA your TF201 before? I did because of WLAN-problems. They changed the WLAN-board so that the MAC-address of this board didn't fit to the rest of the device anymore (ASUS.TW-hq-support told me so). Because of this tablet-ID/MAC-address-mismatch the unlock wouldn't succeed. I always received the well known "network error bla-bla" message using the ASUS-unlock-tool. MAYBE unlocking could work as soon as you are able to change/spoof the MAC-address of the WLAN-board.
I had to RMA it back again to let them change the MAC-address so that I was able to unlock the tablet without any problems. But pay attention - I've heard that sometimes ASUS wants some cash for doing this job (~ 100 Euro + transportation). I was "lucky" because the WLAN-port again was broken and I pleased ASUS to also change the MAC so that it fits to the rest of the board.
Good luck & regards,
Roy

I have the same question.
I want to install the TWRP 2.5 and i read that if you load the wrong bootloader version of twrp you could permabrick the tf201....
Haw can i determine my bootloader version?
By now I'm on cm10 nightly rom...
I already found the answer after much searching and am already rooted and on a custom rom.
If the Nvdia logo at bootup is at the bottom right of the screen, you are on Jelly bean bootloader. Else, if it is below the Asus logo, it is ICS.
Hope this helps.

If you have the ICS bootloader still then do the nvflash process first. It can only be done while on ICS and will make you brick proof.
Once you upgrade you can never do it again.

I had the same problemas you. I RMA'ed my tablet for something and when it came back the unlock tool would not work not matter what. It gave me that same error: "unknow error occurs which may be a network issue. please wait and try again later."
I couldn't figure out why it was not working except that some poeple who RMA'ed could not get it work. Your explanation makes sense. Now I need to find a solution. Do you have any idea it is possible to change the MAC address without sending it back in? My warranty has run out anyway. I did acheive root with the new motochopper method. But this will not allow me to get TWRP or other custom recovery (meaning I cannot change the rom - which is what I really want to do) until I have unlocked the bootloader.
I hate how slow this device is with stock rom. I know it is capable of so much more. Anyway, If you have any ideas how to get this Mac Address and ID to match with root but locked bootloader I would love to hear.

Hello again all, I just have a few questions about rooting my sprint gn2 before i get started. I have found several instructional guides through xda (thanks to all that post them would be lost without ya!) however i am concerned because i am running the new updated version that some of these methods may cause me some issues. I suppose my question is most of these guides were made quite some time ago, and this update has only been around a few months now, is it safe to follow for example this guide http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M9zF6x1MURM&hd=1&list=SPwCVKEYxr_z7FBQYT32dbYw_kdSJmSDH2Do I need to revert back to a prior update somehow? I have searched for a few hours now and there does not seem to be much information on rooting the device after the latest update. Looking forward to running custom roms thanks for the help.
PS if there is anything you think i should know before starting feel free to chime in i will definitely send a thanks your way!
PSS I see that 4.3 locks down the bootloader completely.... this is bull****...... Anyone know whether the phone i get through insurance when i "break" my phone would come loaded with 4.3 as well?

That I'm not sure. You would no longer have unlocked bootloader and I always thought the two ways to have custom recovery were if bootloader was unlocked or via a safestrap method. You would have root so I'd check and see if recoveries exist for sprint note ii after this root method of 4.3
I believe you would be unable to flash a new rom/kernel as they require a custom recovery to do so, and with out a unlocked boot loader you wouldn't be able to get a custom recovery.

Hello. Yesterday was my birthday and i got a used note 1 from my cousion. I came from the HTC evo 3D and i know how to fully root s-off, roms..etc. And i would really like to learn how to do the same to this phone as well. As of right now it has the 4.0.4 firmware on it ICS. I have never owned a samsung phone before and im really new to all of this for the note. I will thank any help i get! I cant wait to start flashing ROMS and kernels to this phone!! . Also once i flash the recovery how do i boot into it? And will i be able to flash roms directly from the phone? I know there is a program called odin that is used to flash recoverys and kernels i think. Last question would be.. Where can i find usb drivers for windows 8.1 for the note 1. Thanks again!

What rom did you flash? Some kit Kat roms require you using cwm recovery. Try flashing a different rom.

Well I just flashed a jellybean 4.1.2 ROM and it is working perfect. But I still want kitkat. I don't remember the name of the one I tried to flash. My main question is when I flash jb, ICS, or kitkat. Do they all just work after flash or do I need some kinda different boot thing like my HTC needed? Last thing is I could not find a flashable cwm recovery through Odin. Do I have to flash it with an app through the phone? PS: If it is as easy to flash things to this phone as easy as I think that would be awesome. So far I am LOVING THIS THING. Samsung might be my new favorite brand.. I had to do so many things to my HTC evo 3D just for custom kernels to be on it. Thanks for any help I get.

Update: Flashed cwm non touch recovery through the app. And I also flashed the candy shop kitkat 4.4.2 ROM, upon boot the WiFi would not work so I am back on the jb 4.1.2 ROM and I am now downloading hellybean jb 4.3 now. I wiped the data before I installed the kitkat ROM and there is no option in recovery to wipe the system so I guess every ROM I install it will overwrite which is kinda weird. I will try to flash the touch version of cwm later.. The one on the forum you gave me says access denied on my phone when I try to download the latest one. But It did work on my pc so I'll get it from there..

Glad your researching!
I also recommend reading the rom descriptions, and instructions. Some builders will clue you in as to which recovery to use, and what gapps need flashed.
I also recommend skimming thru the posts to see what issues other users may have had. They might of given you a clue as to why the Wi-Fi didn't work.

Can you possibly tell me what I can do to make my games run faster on this phone? I ran quadrant and got 3100 as the score. That seems a bit low in my opinion. Or maybe you can tell me what rom is faster. Idk.
