As you can see in the screenshot, my "Ringtone & Notifications" options are grayed out. It doesn't make any sound when I receive texts, and this is a problem.
Other issues: How to remove the two battery indicators in the notifications in the status bar? And what is the little leaf icon in the status bar? And the white chat bubble with the check mark? And the black first aid cross in the white arrow? Also, even though my default messaging app is Messaging, my text message notifications always send me to the AT&T messages app.
I'm thinking it's because you're in the" silent" sound profile. Try it from normal?

Nope, I'm in the "Sound" profile.
No idea then. I was going by the screenshot you posted which clearly shows you're in silent.
Also, leaf is eco mode - power saving. The black cross icon in the left facing tag is telling you that you have more notifications. If you drag down from the top of the screen, you should see all your notifications.

You're right..the screenshot does show that. I just looked at my phone again, and the silent icon is not there. I pulled up settings, and those options are on longer grayed out. Very, very weird considering that just before taking the screenshot, I held down the power button to see the "Power off, Power off and restart, Turn on Airplane Mode, Silent, Vibrate, and Sound" menu and made sure Sound was selected.
I figured out that the leaf is Eco Mode (not active, as the phone is above 50%), but I still don't know about the first aid, checkmark chat, or double battery.
Well the 'first aid' icon isn't actually first aid. It means that more things are listed than your status bar has space for. Have you downloaded anything strange onto your phone? I've never seen the double battery before, or the checked chat bubble.

TBH, I'm so much of a tinkerer and so new to Android, that I'm sure I've installed at least five strange things. I think my best option at this point is to wait for an AOSP ROM without any of the AT&T bloat to come out, backup my apps with Titanium Backup, and flash the debloated ROM. It'll be easier for me to pick through what is installed and narrow down these issues.
It was Llama! Doh..hadn't looked at that in over a week. I guess I had set it to be silent whenever I'm at work. That explains why I'd always raise the volume only to find that it's back on silent again!

**EDIT** Figured out what it was! It was from the app "power control plus" which adds toggles to your notification pull down..
Sorry this might seem like a dumb question but, what is this symbol to the left on the top of my notification bar? The circle power looking symbol that the red arrow is obviously pointing to..
That I don't know; would assume it's an app that you've downloaded otherwise it would be on the right side, but can you please tell me how you got your lock screen to look so pretty-ful?
What does it say if you open notifications? For some reason, it makes me think think of a timer or stopwatch.
Sent from my MB860 using XDA App
That is almost identical to the universal power button icon, except with the power icon the line points at 12 o'clock.
I searched on a number of sites with legends of Android notification icons, and could not find this one. When did the icon appear, and what had you installed prior to that?
Looks like you have a timer enabled in the alarms menu.

I have checked stock alarm, Gentle Alarm, and Alarm Clock Extreme.
None have this icon. Maybe the OP downloaded another 3rd party alarm app?
You've turned on the timer for a camera..
Ehhhh wrong... notification toggle... I think. I had to use this on my atrix.
Edit: looks like I was wrong too.. I can't remember what its called but I used to use this app. It had a full set of toggles in the notification bar.

OP, next time could you please update with a new post, or edit the subject with [SOLVED]. When you edit the OP it doesn't update and view that there is a new post/edit, so we typically don't look at the OP again. I just noticed I found what your problem was 2 hours after you posted you had fixed it. Could have saved me quite a bit of time if I knew you had resolved your problem. Cheers.
Can someone advise what this I have in the top left hand corner. There is nothing in my notification bar when I pull it dowb.

I love you! Thats sorted my other issue of not having any sounds from messages and calls.
Sent from my GT-I9300 using XDA
I have recently moved to an S3 after years in iPhone land. Its been mostly great, the S3 is a way more open and powerful platform. However a coupe of small things are driving me nuts.
All I want is my phone to vibrate and ring at the same time for incoming calls. Vibrate and play a tone when an SMS is recieved and neither vibrate or play a tone when an email is recievied (but still pop up the icon in the notification area). Seems simple enough, but it appears to be impossible on the stock phone. The only setting covering vibration in the Sound menu is "Sound and Vibration" but if I tick this the damn phone vibrates for all notifications, even if I have the notification sound set as "Silent".
The most frustrating thing is that is seems vibration settings per app used to be there in the S2, but have been removed in the S3. Now the Messaging and Email Apps do not have a specific vibrate option, rather it is all controlled with the global "Sound and Vibration" option.
My other annoyance is there is no easy way to control the brightness from the notification area (with out installing a crappy app). Once again it appears the S2 had a slider right on the notification pulldown, but for some reason this was removed?!?
I have used up all my Google Fu and have no answers. Can anyone suggest how to do these seemingly simple things in the stock rom, or suggest an app or even rom that has these features.
Thanks.

You can fix that in the messaging app settings. Messaging -> Settings -> Notification Settings. Tick Notifications and then select a ringtone. If it is still not working then its a bug, try rebooting the phone.
Regarding brightness control, try the app Quicker in Google Play

Thanks for the suggestion.. it gets quite close to what i want if you use the status bar shortcut. Just wish it could put the slider *right on* the status bar.
I think that saying it's a mess is a bit melodramatic. I have mine set up exactly as you describe. Maybe you need to play with your in-app settings a bit more ...

Is anyone else having problems where your phone freezes for a few seconds when you recieve a sms while the phone is in use?

If i were you i'd do a factory reset.
Before i got my phone i had heard issues where notifications either wouldnt appear or would appear even when there is no text and various other issues regarding sound etc
So to make sure i didnt get any of these issues as soon as i got my phone i didnt a factory reset straight away and i haven't had any issues.
I've set my phone to silent and vibrate. The SMS notification vibration duration is annoyingly long on the S3. Is there a way to shorten it?
I use volume control + pro, and everything is good.... Give it a try

I have exactly the same problem. Since i get a lot of mail every day, it's annoying to have vibration enabled, but disabling it in global settings disables it also for SMS :/ I don't think there is a way right now to leave it enabled for SMS only.

So after all this discussion, has anyone figured out how to disable just the vibrate alert for the stock email app? I still want notification in the taskbar, just no vibrate.

No problems at all. As has been said, you need to set your notifications in the in app settings, not the general sound settings on the phone.
To start, go into the phone settings and select sound, and then for notifications set it to silent. Leave sound and vibration as checked.
Then use your in app settings to set you sound and vibration for notifications. I haven't used the stock email app, I use the gmail app. You have to go into the settings for each individual app, but you can set a custom notification sound and vibration for each account. I tested this with two of mine, having vibration on for one and off for another then sent some mail. It vibrated for the account with vibration on, and did not vibrate for the one with vibration off.

OK, just out of interest sake I set up an email account using the stock email app and while it does have custom notification settings for each account, it does not give you the option to disable/enable vibration. So, to me, it appears you can not turn off the vibration in the stock email app without turning it off for the whole phone.
I would assume your only choice would be to use a third party email app if this is important to you.
Sorry I couldn't be of more help.
I'm on stock everything and it works fine. Only thing I had to do is install an app to get some specific mp3 ringtones I had made. But I do have the option for different types of vibration for different contacts or groups, the silent mode works and the custom vibration also works.

1. Pull down the menu where you see notifications and can switch wifi gps etc. Off.
2. Enable the notifications by scrolling to the right and finding the ( ! ) logo.

Not that i know of, but it should stay there, you need to know it's on since it disables key functions.
I noticed that, while blocking mode was enabled, whatsapp sounds still go off in the middle of the night.

True, but we don't need to know it's enabled when it's not doing anything. If you set the between time it should disappear when it's not affecting anything.
Looking for a way to get Tasker of NFC Task list to enable and disable it.

when you try to change the sound of notifications in whatsapp, and you select "Default ringtone" it doesn't use the notification ringtone, it uses your call ringtone, it's really annoying, but I think that's why, it's whatapp's fault
really hate this "feature" to notify me about blocking mode not being enabled...

yeah I agree this thing is completely annoying, it should be in the status bar when on, not when off! Image having a notification all the time that says your alarm is scheduled to go off in 8 hours.

I managed to hack away this notification!
The process is relatively lengthy, and does require a rooted, deodexed ROM... But it works!
The notification will be COMPLETELY removed - it will not show up even when blocking mode IS actually active (i.e. during the active hours).
Anyway, in case you're interested: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=32872016#post32872016

I'm not sure if that'd work. It might remove the icon from the notification bar (the thin one on top), but likely not the ongoing notification when you drag it down fullscreen.
I'll try tomorrow and post it, but I think I remember seeing all that icons (the quick settings icons too) in system framework...
JFYI, I've put a couple of CWM zips together, see http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1943987
By the way, couldnt find the icons on framework.apk
if you pull down your notification bar and press and hold blocking mode notification you will see app info, click on that and you should see a box about notifications and if you uncheck that the icon and notification will go away.

You can't uncheck this one, it's checked and greyed out (in other words permanent).
Is there a way to get notifications to pop-up when the always on display is active?
You get the icon above the clock. Are you wanting a whole heads up notification or something? The screen to turn on? I don't think there is an option for something like that. At least I haven't seen one.

It only shows an icon. I wish it showed the actual message Like Pixel does. but it does not. If your main concern is text messages you can download something like Textra which has an option to wake up the phone when I message arrives. Then you will see the message.

Is there somewhere an app that will also show pop-up messages? Using the Outlook app for example...I find it totally worthless that I get a notification sound but absolutely no popup. I don't want to have to pull the notification center down, I just want a pop up showing the message that I just received.
On that note, I *HATE* how the lock screen INSISTS on combining notifications from an app. If I get 10 emails, I want to see 10 separate notification entries, damn it.
Using Android....is, well, annoying. I shouldn't have to download apps just to make everything work. No wonder my wife rejected the V30 and went back to iOS.

Believe it or not Android is getting better and better with how notifications are handled and how they can be custom tailored per each app. The usage of the notification center is that way for a reason for quick and easy access to your notifications without completely interrupting the user. The cool thing is that there are other apps that you can use in order to adjust the phone to perform how you want it. Android is all about customization. You can have it the way it comes from the manufacturer or you can add apps to customize your experience. For this reason it may take an Android user longer to initially set up a phone vs a iUser.
Good luck.
