I just got a i777 and unlocked it to tmobile service. I read that its possible to have H+ service on it at all times rather than being stuck on E network. I sometimes get H+ service in certain areas of the city but its usually for a few minutes. I have rooted my phone with Odin. Where would I go from there to get the service to work? I would look around for threads but I wouldn't even know where to start looking, sorry and thanks!
basically unless you live in a new TMobile 1900mhz spectrum city, then you are SOL.
if you are NOT in the new TMobile spectrum, then you will never get better than edge. PERIOD.
A search would have found the answer. T-Mobile and AT$T use different radio frequencies for their higher speed connections. Except as pointed out, unless you are in one of their newer 1900mhz areas you will be stuck at EDGE connections on T-Mobile until they get better coverage. This is the price you pay for using a phone specific to a certain carrier on another carrier's network.

I have T-Mobile PPC phone and will be switching to AT&T service soon. My phone is unlocked so this is not an issue.
If anybody has already gone through this is it worth to upgrade both radio and ROM to AT&T versions or leave T-Mobile in place? Any other issues I shall be corncerned about?
if you are going on to ATT and plan to use their GPRS you may want to upgrade as the siemens upgrade is the lates so far and include ATT's proxy setting to get a little xtra compresion of stream. In addition ATT uses variation of GSM standards you will get the best experience using their radio stack. You can still use T-Mo's but your GPRS will be flaky as hell. :?
not sure if i get this right...
i was under the impression that tmobile uses 1800mhz and att uses 1900 that is why the A adnd B models for tmobile and ATT respectivelu,
if i understand this right u wont be getting the best of signal strength even though it might work!!
some one correct me if i am wrong
Some people manage to get a passable signal but most cannot manage to keep a signal outside of the hardware band, try tuning a radio station 100 mhz off tune and see how it sounds. You will be operating outside the band and at best it will be flaky, at worst it just wont work.
tmobile using 1800mhz/Att 1900mhz.

This is the first that I have heard this, but believe it. I went from AT&T to T-Mobile, and it works, but not near as well as ATT. Is there a way to switch it to the 1800mhz, or is this a hardware setting? I don't want to get ride of my SX56, I love it, but I do need better quality.
Thanks,
Darren

You're wrong. The A/B models differentiate the North American market from the rest of the world. It's not ATT vs. TMo.
i went from att to t-mo the first day possible. given my experiences with att and t-mo i would STRONGLY encourage users to skip att and go with t-mo if the two are your consideration set. att's service is horrible and cust service even worse. t-mo has been better all around, unless you're trying to make and receive calls from rural areas.
t-mo is the way, imo.
I agree that customer service in TMo is great, the only problem is that I don't get any TMo signal in my office while AT&T shows full strength. So I don't have my choice.
I'm a recent switcher
Although i had good experiences with T mo. I recently switched because i needed a family plan that gave me the most minutes. So far customer service has been horrible but, phone service has not been an issue. As for upgrading goes i had no problems. All i did was download and install the ROM upgrade via sync cradle. Of course since that i've install the 4.00.5 ROM from Yorch's kitchen.
Advice: stick with T Mo. if you can however, ATT is an ok alternative if you don't have to call customer service.
FYI: Cingular is purchasing ATT wireless. maybe it will be for the best.
Hi, Just purchased the hd2 T Mobile from USA. Which carriers can I use in Canada to activate this Phone? Thanks in advance for any help you can provide.
any of them(well, except any cdma only ones) but you will need an unlock code from online or from t mobile, and you won't get 3g
Thanks for the help samsamuel. I took it to one carrier and they told me it wouldn't work. The phone is unlocked. Why wouldn't I get the 3G.I want the plan that gives me internet mobile browsing. PS it was fido I took it to.
because fido uses 1900 for 3g, from what i've read, and the tmous uses 1700/2100 for 3g., and i think rogers uses 850/1900 and maybe 1900/2100 (just skimming google for this infofact is, though, that without the 1700 aws band,, no high speed data.
you will be able to get gprs and edge for browsing, but no 3g/hsdpa.
as to them saying it won't work, they're probably either making it up or meaning 3g
most canadian users fork out the extra for the telstra model if they want 3g.
Thanks. I guess this phone is useless to me, as I wanted to be able to access the internet without using the wifi.

you can, but only with gprs / edge speeds.
I had been considering buying an HD2 and trying to unlock it for use with an AT&T sim card for my current account. I knew that their networks were compatible, but I didn't realize that hsdpa was on different frequencies. I googled around a bit and it looks like AT&T uses 1900 mhz and Tmo uses 1700/2100. I can't verify if this info is correct ,but this could sure put a dent in my plans. Does anyone know for sure if an HD2 can be used on AT&T's 3g network?
there are several threads about how you can't. go read in the tmous specific section. plenty of confirmation that it doesn't.
3G Frequencies
Hi there!
I was wondering if there is a way to change those settings?? I have a T-Mo HD2, and maybe there is a way to make the phone work with the 3G technology in other frequencies besides the 1700 and 2100 MHz (I live in latin america, so it would have to use the 850Mhz frequency) Anyone please help me with this issue.
As one who unlocked a TMoUS HD2 to AT&T I can assure you that you will not get 3G anywhere in the US or Canada that I can find. On a bright note, it's a phone... With everyone else using 3G networks I find the Edge network to be utterly "unclogged" and find the speeds to be just fine for everything including streaming video.
PS: The phone was free but without a SIM card and I was an AT&T user - not to mention T-Mobile's network leaves a lot to be desired..
There is 3g service in Canada if you happen to be in an area where Wind Mobile is available. search Wind mobile coverage area.
We (family)have several cell phones I use the HD 2 on Edge and it doesn't bother me that its a little slower, actually when I did a quick check with my daughter on her 3g I hardly could tell the difference. I' m sure some will point out where I'm wrong. But I'm satisfied with edge because I enjoy the HD2.
Wind Mobile uses 1700/2100.
My Vibrant is on T-mobile and I'm in a contract for a long time to come. My speeds are ok but IMO not great.
I have an AT&T Blackberry from work so I decided to do a test. I unlocked my Vibrant and put my AT&T sim in it. Sure enough my speeds were 2-3X better than I've gotten with my t-mobile service.
Any way to make my phone use those nice AT&T towers or get those greater speeds while on T-mobile?
(and yes, I'm on Bionix V and yes I've tried numerous different modems )
Thanks.
Edit: The most confusing part to me is I actually get a stronger signal with T-mobile. hmpf.
That's odd about the speed boost.
From my understanding, TMO's and ATT frequency for 3G is different. And it's not a software thing, it's a hardware chip. So I think it may of been a fluke of the speed increase.
It is most likely due to maybe where you are you have a stronger ATT signal than TMO, but again, you shouldn't be able to get AT&T 3G on the vibrant, even if unlocked. Since like I said , it's a hardware chip that runs on a different frequency for 3G.
@eminembdg Yes you can get 3G speeds on an Unlocked Vibrant on AT&T. The Vibrant is a Quad-Band device so the radio can pick up AT&T 3G frequency.
Sent from my Vibrant running GingerCloneR2

Except in areas where the 3G exclusively uses the 850Mhz band. AT&T uses two frequencies for 3G. One works with the Vibrant but the other doesn't.
Right, I certainly am not trying to start up the 850Mhz debate.
This was just a simple test - put in my AT&T sim, I get mbit speeds. Put in my t-mobile sim and get kbit speeds
Hi, I hope this is the right place to post this. Recently I decided to order an unlocked S III from Tiger Direct and utilize prepaid service. I ordered a Straight Talk T-Mobile SIM and cut it down to micro size, inserted it, activated my account. The reason I went with this prepaid idea, is because I read many articles saying that T-Mobile aggressively expanded their HSPA+ network and the Washington DC region (where I live) was one of the areas. They also had a speed test where the HSPA+ averaged something like 12 Mbps while Verizon 3G was under 1.
However, I am receiving incredibly slow speeds, that at most times are as slow or slower than my Verizon 3G! Google Maps and Navigation are unusable now. Most of the time I see the E in the top bar which I assume is referring to EVDO. Only once, for probably a minute or less, did I see the H+ in the header bar, then it changed to H, then back to E.
I contacted ST via email and told them all my details and threatened to leave to try another prepaid service and they just responded with some canned email saying speeds depend on a number of parameters, blah, blah.
So I had a couple questions...
1) Is there anything different I can do to get the faster speeds? How come I do not get HSPA+?
2) If I went to prepaid T-Mobile, would I have faster speeds? Does T-Mobile allot their entire network to ST?
3) Any other ideas, or comments?
Thanks from a first time poster!

Of all the service operators I know give false info about their data services.
I am sure they are able to achieve 12Mbps, but this is done in an almost laboratory-like environment: a very specific firmware that only they have, a near a very specific base station, with a very specific type of data, and when nobody else is using the service.
So, are THEY (and only they) able to reach the advertised speeds? YES. But what they don't tell you is that it is a nominal speed, not the effective speed.
Your phone is fine, you have the best phone there is in the world, but there aren't any operators that make it justice.
Yeah often you have to take their speeds with a pinch of salt but i wouldn't expect that large a drop. F.E i would expect if they advertised 12 to get about 5

Thanks guys...I actually wouldn't trust any provider's claims ...I was actually referring to these tests I found which seemed unbiased: pcworld/article/253808/3g_and_4g_wireless_speed_showdown_which_networks_are_fastest_.html (can't post links yet)

"Washington, D.C.
Washington's results follow the New York City pattern: wins for T-Mobile in average 3G download speed (4.14 mbps) and upload speed (1.34 mbps), for AT&T in average 4G download speed (8.52 mbps), and for Verizon in average 4G upload speed (5.46 mbps).
Unlike our New York results, however, our Washington results show a relatively close finish in 4G download speeds among the top three contenders: only 3.16 mbps separates third-place T-Mobile from first-place AT&T. However, T-Mobile didn't keep pace with AT&T and Verizon in 4G upload speeds.
Our results for Washington also indicate that AT&T's 3G service in the area could use some work. The average 3G download rate of 1.58 mbps for the District of Columbia was AT&T's worst among the 13 cities in our study, and the gap of 2.56 mbps between that average and first-place T-Mobile's 4.14 mbps was the second-widest in our study."

I am near Washington, D.C., a huge metro area, which is why I felt going with this prepaid service was a good idea. Why am I not getting these speeds?? I am getting ready to just pay the extra $15 for Tmobile's prepaid, where I would surely expect to get the HSPA+ coverage.
'E' is for Edge, which is an old GSM data mode. From what I understand, T-Mobile uses 1700 mhz. on 3g. I have heard there are certain cities that it will work in. As an example, las vegas I have seen mentioned as using 1900, but the better part of the country uses 1700 from my understanding.
The Galaxy S3 uses the folowing for 2/3g bands.
GSM 850 / 900 / 1800 / 1900 HSDPA 850 / 900 / 1900 / 2100
I found this on the internet. It appears they are EOL'ing Edge to get 1900 mhz spectrum for HSDPA.

For the guy who keeps crying that he doesn't have 3G yet and that T-Mobile isn't speaking about their deployment, earlier this week T-Mobile just announced that they are almost 95% done with the refarming. No this does not mean that 95% of the 1900mhz areas are seeing 3G already. An informed posted this to clarify what 95% means
http://www.tmonews.com/2012/11/t-mobile-cto-neville-ray-says-hurricane-sandy-will-delay-some-1900mhz-hspa-deployments/
"95% refarm means that we have carved out the frequencies from the 2G layer and are ready to deploy the 1900Mhz UMTS. It needs to be understood that there are 37,000 sites being modified and it takes about a week to complete each site. There are thousands of crews around the country working tirelessly to install the new equipment, antennas cabinets and hybrid fiber optic from the ground to the top of the tower. This takes a lot of time and hard work. It is way more than just re-configuring the existing network."
Hey I just got my optimus g unlocked and switched over to T-Mobile. In a nutshell the service is horrible. I live in washington DC and travel around the city a lot. I get constant inconsistant speeds on the network and I could be walking down the block and my phone could go from hspa+ to edge to no service at all within a hour of walking. Theoretically couldn't I make the data speeds much more consistent if I could somehow set my phone to just pick up HSPA+ towers and when its not around instead of going to Edge or completely turning off have the phone roam on another network?
No. Incompatible hardware.
