Mobile web browsing is always a bit of a struggle. If the browser is too loaded, its too slow. But if the browser is speedy, it normally means it doesn't do enough.
I have 4 browsers on my phone (5 if you count Opera Mini).
Here's how I use each one:
Internet Explorer:
Stock browser, great WAP support. I use PIE (pocket IE) when I need to go to a site I know is designed specifically for mobile phones, or if I need to quickly check something on a website. It's my "Speedy browser" if you will.
I have this set as my default browser for compatibility reasons so that if an application needs to load a page, IE will run and I typically won't have any issues.
Pros: Fast, supported by carrier/manufacturer/microsoft, quality WAP support
Cons: Lack of/poor javascript support, almost purely mobile browser (no desktop-like feel), restricted file-type downloads, weak download support
JB5:
I installed it because everyone says its good, but I never found a real use for it. It's slower than IE, but doesn't do enough in my opinion. Moving on...
Pros/cons left out for lack of testing.
Opera Mobile: (beta verson 8.65 - expiring Oct 1, 2007)
Takes a few extra seconds to load the browser, and browsing the internet is a little slow. However, the sacrificed speed goes to adding a nearly full desktop browser with JavaScript support as well as a download manager (with no file type restriction), multiple window support, and powerful page compression options.
Of all the browsers on my phone, Opera Mobile is definitely my current favorite, but it does have its flaws - speed for one. It's not the slowest (see MiniMo) but its no speedster. It's definitely slower than JB5, and does lock up occasionally (probably simply because its beta). There are bugs, showing that it is still not a finished product, and it does fail at render certain pages on various occasions.
Pros: Rich in feature, Excellent JavaScript support, Download manager without file-type restrictions, pause/resume downloads, nice "desktop-like" browser feel on a mobile browser
Cons: Slow, beta and buggy, expires oct. 1 and is not free, multiple render issues and failure to load images
MiniMo: (Mini Mozilla - version .2)
I was surprised when I installed this one to see that it actually worked on Smartphones. The first time I installed it, I thought the buttons didn't work so I removed it. Then I decided to give it another shot. Now I discovered how it works:
Left softkey - Cycle selection area (Tab-bar, Web Page, Navigation buttons)
-Hold - Main Menu
Right softkey - Cycle click-able objects (page links, individual buttons)
-Hold - Quick menu (Find, FullScreen, Back, Forward, Reload)
Center button - Select highlighted object
Okay, MiniMo is by far the slowest of all the browser at loading. It takes quite a while to load the browser, and the page loads are comparable to Opera Mobile, whereas they are tolerable, but still slow. I believe it does have an easier time accessing the network than Opera Mobile does, but don't have any hard proof of that.
The Navigation of this application is very difficult and take a lot of getting used to, but the browser is definitely the most powerful of all listed here. It can even handle Google Maps.
As for page rendering - it has an option called "SSR", which I assume to be Small-Screen Render", however, it seems that it can't be disabled. The pages still render in full, but do not fit-to-screen and there is no option for such.
Pros: Practically IS a desktop browser, full render-capabilities, nifty font size up and font size down buttons, RSS support (not a feed-reader alternative though)
Cons: Painstakingly slow, beta bugs, no "fit-to-screen" option, difficult menu system and navigation, weak download support (similar to PIE's)
Opera Mini (stable, v3):
The included HTC Midlet Manage is garbage in my opinion. However, it's the best I can get my hands on, so it's what I use. OperaMini is as mobile of a browser as it gets. From what I understand, it used a proxy which compresses the site (including resizes pictures) before transmitting them to your phone. This makes the browser surprisingly fast. It has a nice UI (if only the midlet manager would allow fullscreen) with transitions and runs fairly well. However, it is unable to download files. In the event it is presented with a file to download, it will open the device's default browser (in my IE) and direct it to the file.
Pros: fast, compressed pages, excellent mobile browsing
Cons: Unable to download files, unable to load a selection of sites in decent quality
Opera Mini 4 (beta):
At the time of writing this, the browser crashed and/or freezes far too often to get an idea of how well it works. Does look fairly promising though.
In the end, I'll use IE if I want speed, Opera if I want features or a desktop like feel, and MiniMo if Opera fails to render the page. Opera Mini might come in periodically, maybe if I'm stuck in a GPRS area.
So, what do you guys use and why?
Opera Mobile sometimes crashs and I have to plug out the battery to end this. So i removed it.
By so far, WM isnot support JAVA so perfect(run JAVA in full screen, with network connecting and sound), now i'm using JBlend. It's a changed version, someone change the program so it can show full screen, but it doesn't have network connecting function.
Mozilla is toooooo slow.
So i choice IE and UCWeb(A Chinese program and it's server is also in China, see more at www.ioicn.com.cn).
Hmm, are you talking about Opera Mobile (the actual WM app) or Opera Mini (the java application)?
And thanks for that UCWeb ...I'll take a look at it....

Really? Not the Java one?
I haven't really had that much of a problem with it freezing or crashing on me and use it a lot.

I guess, I won't support this thread anymore. Our device is not good anymore, and our Wildfire's can't use all new apps because of very slow Arm v6 processor and GPU lack. But anyway, if you have any good ideas - write it here.
I hope, that this thread was useful for everyone. Maybe I'll back, but I guess, it will happen only when I will buy new phone, so I won't back coming soon. Thanks for everything.

Thanks mate really useful.
I would like to add 2 facebook apps that actually work. (smoothly)
1- http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1200207 (real deal)
2-Friendcaster pro.
Oh, I almost forgot Brits! "Rainwatch" is the Uber weather app for us. It basically is a local cloud map. Which is what matters here
Thanks, is a great list of apps.
One thing I would ask, is can apps be rated for how speedy or laggy they are on the wildfire.
For example GO SMS is lovely, particularly with its flip screens but I am using Pansi SMS and it is much faster, and has a less cramped text box.
A few apps the I really love that worked really well on the wildfire are :
Beyond podcast
Gtasks
Flext9 voice recognition software, there was the occasional glitch on WiFi, one time out of 10 that dictation would fail, fine on 3G . rocksolid since rooted.
Could moderators make this thread sticky?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1272870
Doubts on a sticky mate your not even in the correct section, would be more suited in the themes and apps section, but goodluck.
Regards Slymobi.
" the ability to read is good,
the ability to understand what you've read is great "
Excellent app list
However launcherpro is much faster and smooth when compared to go launcher
Sent from my HTC Wildfire using XDA App
additional for me: viber, YIM with voice, exDialer, textfree.
Added more apps to list ...
Mate... u just forgot to mention the name of famous "XDA" app
Without it all XDAians are unsupportive.

I didin't forget XDA
13. Tapatalk: With this app you can go to some forums. For example with Tapatalk you can go to XDA forum. Also there are many other forums.
Apps2rom works well to move apps to ROM memory instead of sd. It also works for apps that can't be moved to sd. Nicely frees up space using faster internal memory. Only app I found that didn't like this was spotify.
Couple this with titanium backups new option to move dalvick data to ROM and you free up a lot.
i used gtasks up to now, but i've found a new app (now featured on market) called any.do. very functional, synces with google tasks, has great widgets.... all the best
Droid wall, advanced task killer, xda, superuser elite, SD maid pro, titanium backup root, app brain, appy geek and of course my favorite HTC app teeter
sent from my steroid powered, cyanogenmod filled wrecking machine! using xda app.
Nice thread! I'm downloading Pansi SMS now, I've used Handcent and Go SMS Pro, but they are both slow
Some of my favorite apps (that are not already in the list in the TS): Android Assistant, Quickpic, My Data Manager, Plume, Airdroid, No-Frills CPU control, ADW Launcher EX, and more
Oh, and don't use task killer apps. It's integrated in Android since 2.2 and using extra task killers only slows your phone down.
Excellent list, thank you
After long long time... Update . I added more apps and now these aps are sorted. P.S. Moderators, please move this thread to HTC Wildfire Themes and Apps and make it sticky. Thank you very much .
It's a decent list of things that work well on wildfire, although it's missing a few different launchers which imo definitely deserve to be up there with go launcher, adw, launcher 7, 360, espier and I'm pretty sure there's more, also there's 2 or 3 threads already on this subject so what exactly stands yours apart from the others to deserve it to be stickied other than the fact you've categorized it?

I think my thread better than others because all the best apps are in one post. In another thread (name is share your apps whithout you can't live or something like this) all apps is in different posts and it is not sorted so, it is difficult to find app that you really need. Also in this thread I explained what every app does. So... Of course I didn't say that you must make it sticky. So moderators just can move it to other forum. But I hope moderators will make it sticky. Sorry for poor english :/.

Update: Thread is moved to themes and apps (thanks to our moderators), added some more apps like shazam, turnin radio, some apps are moved to the other category .

A decent list to start but it's just as you said, a copy of your note 2 list. A lot of those are unnecessary (like jelly bean keyboard). I was more hoping for apps that really maximize the power or display of the DNA (or both). Anyone know of any apps that maximize the 1080p display?

For photo editing, Snapseed was just released for Android:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.niksoftware.snapseed
It's the only one I keep on my phone for now. The UI is good/quick/intuitive. The "structure" adjustment is like a HiRaLoAm local contrast enhancement, which is the one thing I do on almost every photo I edit in Photoshop on my computer.
One of the more impressive photo editors IMO is this one:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.iudesk.android.photo.editor
More professional layout, curves/levels adjustments. For me though if I'm going to spend more than ~2min editing a photo I'll do it on my desktop in Photoshop.
I think Snapseed is plenty good for sprucing up your crappy cell phone pics for Facebook/imgur, emailing your grandma etc..
For photo editing I would recommend: Autodesk Pixlr . - It's a really complex photo editing software, probably the most in-depth app for photo editing on android.
For "lost phones" I would recommend: SeekDroid - This is a great app, track your phone from any computer or lock it via SMS. I can attest to this software, it works great on the DNA.
Also, for music, though its not the audiophiles choice, Google Play Music is great, as you can store all of your music in "the cloud" ( I think up to 2k songs? or 20k?? not sure) and play them wherever you are. This is brilliant for those lucky enough to retain their unlimited 4G
For wallpapers: Wallbase ... There is no better wallpaper site period, and now they have an app
For VNC / remote computer control, you can't really beat SplashTop 2. The latency is so fast, it almost feels like the computer IS on your phone. Also works with windows 8 gestures.
For backups: GoBackup is a great app.. very simple to use and can be a lifesaver if your phone crashes and you DIDN'T back up your SMS/MMS messages or whatever else, wifi hotspots, ringtones, wallpapers, contacts, call logs etc etc.
I will update with links later because right now I am in class... Sorry! xD
Nice list. Downloaded 7 apps from here.

Any chance we could get a revised list of FREE apps for non-rooted phones? =)
Any.DO is a to-do and task app, that's elegantly designed, and works great!
Posts the current items due today in your notification bar, so it's hard to miss!
It even asks if you'd like a reminder, if you have a phone call come in and you hit "Cancel"...
It's free. Give it a try!

I fixed that issue through replacing the kernel with the Cubed 2.4.2 kernel so that it is now writeable. After that SuperSU works just fine
IMO, Swiftkey should be on the list.
Photoshop Touch is for tablets, idk how you're running it on your phone...
UC Browser V3.4 released, search "UC Browser " in Windows Phone Store.
★SD Card Support
Export your downloaded files to SD Card or Public Folder for better file management.
★Bluetooth File Sharing
You can now conveniently share downloaded files to others through Bluetooth or QR Code.
★Menu Optimization
A brand new Menu that’s easier to use and gives a better browsing experience. Speed Mode is now on main menu.
★General Improvements
Font size adjustment available by long pressing page in Speed Mode; Optimization for more fonts on WP 8; Improved bookmarks; Bing search bug fixed.
Absolutely saved web browsing on my WP8 (very underwhelmed with IE mobile). One request would be a search icon down the bottom (next to the home icon) for one handed use with larger screens.
UC Browser is the best mobile browser I have ever used. It is even faster and smarter than Opera: With cloudy system, makes your mobile browsing smoothly as well as save your traffic. With various popular wap sites embedded, helps you open the most visited sites conveniently.
But I think the most important advantage of UC Browser is the powerful download manager, which supports to resume downloads from breakpoints, especially for network with a higher disconnection rate. It's really smart. I think that's why it is so popular all over the world They have 300 million users in 150 countries, which is much more than Opera.
windows phone store: UCBrowser
would love a sextion to input domain username / password for authentication also
