UPDATE: PLEASE SEE CHN110's SIGNATURE FOR AN AMSS MODIFIED Tmobile MODEM (thanks to hotwir3 and delacrow) WITH UNRESTRICTED RAT ACCESS!
The following method is still the one that works with UCLF6. BUT I WILL MODIFY THOSE AMSS BIN FILES AS HOTWIR3 HAS AND SEE IF THE WORKAROUND CAN BE ELIMINATED!
UPDATE 2: USING THE AMSS FILES FROM THE N7005 ROM WITH UCLF6 MODEM DID NOT WORK...STILL HAVE TO ACCESS
RAT USING THE WORKAROUND.
Is it just me or has anyone else noticed we are not locked out of RAT selection on this base?
I'm on edge now...cool. slow but cool. Have to use a previously known work around but it does work. :good: I would like to see if it works for someone else before I post the method I used, PM me if you have want to know how to set it.

Here is the workaround...as I said it is a previously known process, I just decided to give it a try and it works:
First I suggest you must be on one of the new DXLJ2 based ROMs (never tried any other base, its possible 4.1 kanged and aosp Roms may work also)...heres the dialer method I used, with phone powered on take your SIM card out (pry it up a little to get past the battery), reboot the phone then after startup is complete make sure wifi and airplane mode are turned off, dial:
*#197328640# or (short cut) *#2263#...then follow the menu options: (DEBUG SCREEN/ PHONE CONTROL/ NETWORK CONTROL/ BAND SELECTION/ now here you have several options but to get "edge" choose GSM BAND PREFERENCE/ GSM850) THIS IS IMPORTANT> then press on the phone menu key and press "BACK" make sure you see the asterik in parenthesis next to the option you have chosen...then use the phone menu key to select "end". reinsert SIM then restart phone ( dont pull the battery to insert sim). You will also have to check your APN settings and select "bearer unspecified" at the bottom of APN SETUP. Thats it...its an old workaround from when I used my Captivate and SII primarily. Cant remember where I got it (on here somewhere I'm sure) but I had the method saved as text in a notepad file and came across it yesterday.
Good luck and enjoy.
you have the e circled as gprs..
from what i have seen before.. if you are in a gprs are, you would get a 'g' icon,
My bad...that might be a mislabel by me, its just a label but to your point I guess it should read egprs..but it is edge (2.5g) and not 3g or 4g.
This from a google search:
General packet radio service (GPRS) is a packet oriented mobile data .... Such mobiles are considered pseudo-Class A, sometimes referred to as ... EGPRS ( EDGE), 236.8, 59.2 (Class 8, 10 and MCS-9), 4+1 ...
and some further searching...

Thanks chn110 for directing me to the modified UVLG3 modem in his sig that allows RATaccess using dialer method without having to pull sim or reboot. All bands are able to be changed...awesome
As for the UCLF6 modem, the workaround in the first post is still applicable.

think this modified modem will allow me to change the band preference (disable LTE) in a cm/aosp build?
I dont see why not, I think it would...not sure but it wouldn't hurt to try. Just have another modem on your sd to flash if it didn't.

I'm On Novena rom and I think I have the modem/radio you're talking about from hotwir3 I'm on T-Mobile also... but getting spotty reception and speeds.
I'm still new to the Note do please excuse my ignorance... but what does this mod do?

Actually this isn't a mod it is a 'workaround' to achieve RAT access on UCLF6. The UVLG3 modem (was modded to carry the amss files from the N7005 base) and does not have restricted access so you wouldn't need to use this method. Although switching bands thru the settings menu is not yet fully functional, you can use the dialer (ussd) code to choose any band...and it basically allows you to switch off LTE and use 3g only. Helps save data when say your near your monthly limit or whenever. As far as the modem from Tmobile goes, basically it probably only is a benefit for ATT users (being unresticted to change RAT selection). It has the 1900 band added so they (Tmobile) could sell the iphone. The speeds when I tested it were unfortunately typical and not impressive. The reason Tmobile bought out Metropcs was to accrue access to their LTE network, so after that becomes final then Tmobile users will finally get the most out of their Notes...be patient it's coming.

Just a quick FYI, I did this selecting only the GSM Band 850 and thought I had hosed my sim/phone. Nothing worked after I did this. I did however go back and select the 850/1900 band and that fixed it. Seems some AT&T area may use both bands.

Were you on UVLG3 when that happened? When you say hosed you mean no cell signal at all? I believe UVLG3 only has 1900 band available for the ATT user. The workaround is for UCLF6 and when something similar happened to me I found that when I changed the last line (bearer) in the APN settings to unspecified that it will work. This is mentioned at the end of the first post. Please let me know as it would be interesting to see which modem you were on when it happened.

I'm on UCLF6, but I'm not on ATT so my Bearer is always set to unspecified
Yeah phone just showed the circle w/ a line through it for the cell signal. So it saw the sim card, but the radio wouldn't attach to just the 850 frequency. If I remember correctly, I believe that AT&T uses two frequencies. One for uplink, the other for downlink, which is why it started working after I picked the 850/1900 line.
They use the lower frequency in rural areas and the higher in urban. Lower frequencies travel farther.

Well I have a Samsung Note on Straight talk and I am only getting EDGE network its a AT&T Sims for Straight talk not the tmobile. My wife has a LG Thrill and its running Straight talk and always has H+ 3 to 4 bars all day. I took the Sims card out of the Samsung note and put it in the LG Thrill and got H+ with no problems. I did drive around town and got 4g anywhere from 2-4 bars but when I got home it went back to EDGE!! I notice in some areas was on EDGE when it should been on H+. I have tried different apns and get the same results. Is there any service code I should be looking at??? If so how do I do that? Where else should I be looking?? Thanks Bud-sc
Straight Talk uses AT&T network so you should get 3G. I also read about a fix to get 4G I'd you're in a 4G area.
But you said you tried several APN's and nothing improved. What modem are you using (settings>about phone>base and)?
Also, check this setting:

Packet Data checked.
You probably used more than 2GB of data in a month or used more than 100MB/day. Your probably being throttled by ST. Might give them a call and if my assumption is correct, act innocent.
Good point. Even the $45 unlimited plan gets throttled at 2 gigs. But it sounds like he never got 3/4G yet.

All go on everything and I only had this new Sims card for 3 days so using to data might out. OK my baseband is T989UVKL1 and here is my zip code 29582. Thanks Bud-sc
That looks like the stock modem. Did you root? I'm guessing yes because you said you changed your APN.
If I were you I would flash the UCLE5 modem from here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=27863509
Why? It sounds like a reception or antenna problem. So changing modems could improve your reception.
But you need CWM recovery installed to do that.
No the phone is not rooted.I just only change the apn that Straight talk give me then after that I tried a few other apn settings to see if I get different results but no luck yet.I am not going to give up yet but this phone is suppose to get ics this July so maybe then the new fireware might make things better. I hope so. Thanks Bud-sc
Is your phone the at&t or international version? Did you unlock the phone to put in the ST sim card?
ICS is out now. The modem I suggest is the current ics modem.

That's your problem right there sir. Thats a Tmobile Baseband. All you need to do is dial *#2263# and select GSM Bands then select all...and bam you should have 4G or H+ in no time.
another solution is to flash any AT&T Baseband/Radio. But that would require flashing CWM thru ODIN. But no root required for that.
Its the att and yes its unlocked. I checked the update last night nothing yet. Is there away to check the update with out the time limit?? Is there a stock firmware on Samsung web site for At&t??? Thanks Budsc

dude did you see my reply? The T989 Baseband is specific to the Tmobile's Galaxy S2.
And the stock AT&T Radio can be found here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1506212
Just flash thru ODIN.
If your phone has at&t logo but has a T-Mobile modem (as the baseband suggests) someone has already flashed a different modem.
Do you know about CWM or Odin? In other words, what is your skill level for solving this problem?
My skill on something like this little afraid too be truthful. Thanks Bud-sc
OK what do I need to download to my computer and how do I do this??MY phone does not or does it need to be rooted???
try disabling mobile data?
Does your phone have the AT&T logo at the top?
You don't need root access to flash a modem.
Are you chatting with me from your phone or a PC? Why? Because you will have to perform the next steps from a PC.

First things of, download drivers for your phone. Enable USB debugging in settings. Then download latest ODIN (i believe its v1.85 or something), then download the http://m-s-j.net/dagnarf/phone-odin-att-stock-radio.tar.

Are you still doing this? and if so what APN settings are you using now?
Hey Everyone,
I've been trying to use my T-Mobile SIM in my Verizon Note 2 with little success. I am using last nights Cyanogenmod nightly. The build does not have an APN menu, but I overwrote the existing one with this one: htt ps://gist.github.c om/429 0254 (Should work right?).
I am able to make and receive calls, and receive texts. I am unable to make texts and connect to any data network. On the About Phone -> Status page, this is what I am given:
Network: T-Mobile
Signal Strength: -120 dBm 99asu
Mobile network type: HSDPA:8
Service State: in service
Mobile network state: Disconnected
My phone number: unknown
MIN: unknown
I just activated my T-Mobile sim 2 days ago, but was informed it should be working. Any help would be greatly appreciated!
ok try this
Firstly you ust be rooted Buy paid version of titainium backup go to market and download global APN and APN manager then go back to titainium backup and touch the APN man. And when it pops up slide finger from right to left and there will be options to convert to system app touch that one ..but nothing else then find global APN and do the same to it then go open the global APN (it will have an android picture maybe dontbworry if bit don't ) after you open it it will ask you too select your country do that then add apns should give you a choice of 5 I think check them all and save it then...Google for T-Mobile apn s and write them down on paper and go to APN manager go to add APN and add them one by one and it will give you the option to swap apns so set it up then when its ready to swap turn of phone and insert sim turn on and go to APN man. And hit swap and the Tmobil apns you added should take effect ... If that Dont work since you added global apns go to settings and approved networks and you should see the apns if not hit menu and choose add APN and then put in the ones you wrote down and reboot and that should do it if not on YouTube search zedomax .. And the video is how to make galaxy note 2a global phone try one of these three things and between the three one should work ..but its iffy if you get 3g2g or edge all could get was edge so try it out and post back to me and I'm not responsablebfor damage although there shouldbnotnbe any ..hope this can help you out bro :good:

Thanks for the help! Any time I use an APN app I get an error that says " Unfortunately, Global APN has stopped" Or "Unfortunately, APN Manager Pro has stopped"
Have you looked at the APN thread in development? You should only need to put the new APN data into /system/etc/apns-conf.xml. It is possible that you won't get good data speeds though, as the VZW Note 2 doesn't support T-Mobile's main frequencies.

I also have flashed the APN zip that allows you to manually add APN's. If you know a T-Mo APN, you could try adding it that way as well.
Please post your results, I'm very interested in finding out how this goes for you. :good:

Thanks for all the help guys. I had encrypted my device to get on my work email and it turns out that it was screwing some things up. I flashed back to stock firmware, installed the apn manager and added the correct tmobile apn. Everything seems to work now. I'm on Edge network now, but for a brief moment I was put on a HSDPA and had 3g. Not sure why I can't get back on it. Running stock firmware right now, not sure if it makes a difference or not.

Thanks,
I had to flash back to stock because of an issue I was having with encryption turned on. It wouldn't let me add any apns. I used your apn xml file on the stock firmware and it seems to work great. Although your samsung application to remove the annoying non-verizon SIM is not working. I moved it to the /systems/apps folder and overwrote the existing apk. Was there anything else I had to do?
I'm getting 2g speeds. I was on a HSDPA network at one point and got good speeds, but I can't seem to get back on it. Should my Network mode be Global or GSM/UMTS?
EDIT: I'm on HSDPA:9 now. I was on HSPAP:15 for a second. Most of the time, I'm on EDGE:2

Everything seems to be working great now. I don't believe I have very good coverage of the 3G/4G on the 1900mhz band yet because I seem to always be on the edge network (Albany, NY). T-Mobile is expanding the band though around the nation so it can support iphones. I am hopeful that it will be in my area soon. Here is a map of where the 1900mhz band has been spotted: htt p://ww w.airportal.de/ (down today for some reason).
I really didn't do anything that wasn't already posted in the forums. A t-mobile SIM card should work after the bootloader has been unlocked (jailbroken) and the APN has been added (Using stock ROM). The t-mobile version of the note 2 will probably get better speeds because it supports the 1700mhz and 1900mhz bands while the Verizon version only supports 1900, but supports every other band on tmobiles network. It is also my understanding the tmobile will have 1900mhz coverage in every place that has 1700mhz coverage. I could be wrong though.

Is there any reason in particular that you're using the stock SCH-I605 ROM? I'm curious if this would work for CleanROM....
Also, a few other quick questions:
1. Which method did you use to add APNs? (Flash the zip file? .xml?)
2. Where did you get the T-Mo SIM and how did you get it "activated" ?
Thanks! :highfive:

I never really gave the stock firm a chance before. I wanted to try it out before going with Cyanogenmod. I like the samsung tools (multi-window, s-note) and everything is running smooth right now. I will probably flash to cyanogenmod later though. I'm pretty sure it will work on other roms. Not sure why it wouldn't. I think my issue before was that I had the device encrypted and it wouldn't take my changed apn.
1. I manually overwrote the APN file in /system/etc/. I found that it was the easiest method. The flashable apn setting did not work for me until I added this apn file.
2. T-Mobile is running a special on their activation kit right now. You can get a free micro sim delivered to your door. After that, you can just activate everything online.

No you do not. You become a customer of course when you activate it. Here is the link to get them:

Here is the APN file I used: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=35369426&postcount=3
After you overwrite the existing APN file and restart your phone, you can use this flashable mod: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=35368049&postcount=2 and it will display your APN information in Settings -> More Settings -> Mobile Networks -> Access Point Names or you can use APN Manager Pro (I had issues with APN Global) to select the T-Mobile US APN.

So are you still on a contract with Verizon and are trying out T-mobile for giggles?
What type of "customer" account did you get upon activation and what is it running you?
Btw, much props and thanks awarded for all of the info you've provided thus far!!

I'm actually trying out both t-mobile and the phone. I got tired of paying for Verizon so I transfered my number to tmobile (which was free). My brother bought the note 2, but he's currently using his old phone and I'm trying out his new one. I will probably buy myself one, but I'm not sure if I would get the tmobile one or the Verizon one.
I got the $30 a month unlimited data and text. It only includes 100 minutes talk. I don't use minutes too much, but if I was in danger of going over, I could always use the app sipdroid which will make calls using my google voice number over my data connection.
No problem. This forum has been a tremendous help to me so I will provide any information I can in return.
Has anyone had any luck getting anything other than Edge on tmobile? I was using my Verizon N2 on Net10 with an at&t micro sim. It worked great and I stayed connected to the hspa network. I live in Memphis and had tmobile in the past so I know coverage is no issue here. So I decided to try it out thinking I'd still get decent speeds. No luck. I think I've just wasted $60. I've tried several different apns. Called tmobile tech support and still nothing. Even tmobile told me I should have better than edge but nothing they could do either. I've tried beans and clean rom. I previously had a DNA using it with the net10/att but I had to use a certain rom or it just wouldn't work. I know it has capabilities to run on a faster tmobile frequency right or did I misread that somewhere? Is there something else I need to do to unlock that capability? I'm rooted/unlocked and running beans. I didn't want to start a new thread asking so hopefully someone sees this and can help. If I'm stuck on edge I definitely will be going back to net10 service.

the towers around your area have to be running on the newer 1900mhz spectrum or the hspa wont work.
heres a website that will tell you exactly that. http://www.airportal.de/
Hello everyone currently have the I605 and having problems keeping full signal (i mean the "No Service" icon) using a carrier call Solavei which runs off of T-Mobile's network... I have the correct apn settings, unlocked bootloader, rooted and running Liquid Rom. But no issues when I put my Verizon sim in...
is anyone else having these issues using other tmo networked carrier?
i605 on tmobile how to
Install jedi x2 rom (4.3)
choose tmobile as carrier
flash agni kernal.
flash googlehome.apk launcher
good to go. no issues whatsoever.

To clarify as I am sure this question will get asked.
The VZW S4 is already unlocked for other SIMs (T-mobile verified - like the VZW GN2.
I haven't checked the Add APNs section under mobile network settings but assume it is there and working as it now does on the VZW GN2.
EDIT:
To access the Add APN menu you must have a SIM other than VZW in your phone.
Thanks astralentity for confirming.

Well, You can see the APN's (LTE - Verizon Wireless) but hitting the settings button reveals that Add new access point is greyed out and not selectable.
Bummer.

Probably need to install APN Manager Pro as a system app. That worked on the N2.

New here, but I've been following the site for almost 3 years now.
I got my S4 yesterday, and I can confirm that with my AT&T microsim for GoPhone service, I was able to get HSPA+ without any software or hardware modifications. When you have a different SIM in your phone, you can add APN information. After I added the wap.cingular info, HSPA became HSPAP in the Status menu, and I had H+ on the notification bar.
I have no money in the GoPhone account right now, so I was unable to test the speeds on HSPA+. Verizon is still my primary service, the GoPhone is my emergency backup.
Hope this helps everyone! I can provide screenshots after when I get home and able to pop in the AT&T SIM.

What about international carriers? When I go to Europe next month can I just buy/rent a prepaid SIM and pop it in without alteration or would I need root and APN Manager?

I did not need root to add APN info. You should be good to go with international SIMs, since HSPA is available on all bands with this phone, with the possible exception of 1700.
What about that World Data plan that the verizon customer service been telling me all the time when I asked them if the phone would work outside US.
P.S. I'm aslo talking about a 200$ on contract version
FInally the thread I was looking for, i for one would like to see this thread keep active as I am thinking of purchasing a verizon S4 and want to know what prepaid and mvno options I have for it as well as what speeds. Sofar I see gophone im curious how it will work on tmobile and simple.

The verizon version does not support the 1700 band (according to the Verizon website), so you would need to be in an area that has been upgraded to the 1900 band of hspa+.
Here's the info straight from Verizon;
Network
Network: LTE, CDMA/1xEVDO Rev. A (800/1900 MHz)
Global Network: EDGE/GSM (850/900/1800/1900), HSPA/UMTS(850/900/1900/2100)
Hi all
I have a quick question under your APNs are you only seeing one line "Verizon LTE" as the only access point? I was messing around with my apns-conf file and I wanted to make sure I restored the right one. Does your screen look like this with a Verizon sim inside?

See if the GLONASS works on your phone too - I'm curious.
Type in dialer:
3845#*802#,then the secret menu will come up...Then:
1. Go to LTE-Only
2. Modem Settings
3. RAT Selection
4. Select GSM / WCDMA / LTE auto or what ever selection you want
Job done...
P.S If you have another D80x just enter your model number instead " X " in dialer etc: 3845#*802 or 803 or xxx

Not necessarily.. phone such as the D801 for Wind Mobile in Canada, has LTE disabled by the carrier and needs to be enabled manually. This is mainly because Wind does not have a LTE network and so if you have a non Wind LTE SIM you will need to unlock the LTE option in order to use the LTE network or be stuck with 4G speeds.
What is the method to enable it permanently with root?

you dont want to permanent enable LTE because then voice would not work maybe sending SMS would be a problem too, this is the case for T-mobile and I imagine the same for ATT, verizon and sprint uses CDMA technology so it may be different, but if you insist on doing it, follow op guide and check LTE only...
Indian Model also has LTE disabled, but this should enable it. Only problemwe do nt have LTE in the country anyway
I guess it will help me when i am travelling to Europe next.

No it doesn't but I would figure it would allow me to switch it to being open. The phone was bought unlocked from a 3rd party 3 vendor which I know have LTE. Maybe it is because my Sim doesn't support it?
i have same issue with my G2 unlocked EU Version. My others Devices (Xperia Z1, HTC One, Samsung S4) have i no Problem with LTE and Sim.
I think, it's a Firmwareprobllem.

Newbie here.....
I have a Verizon LG G3 that I am using with AT&T.
It works well but a couple of issues I'd like to address.
1) I only get H+ and would like to get LTE
2) I am having issues with sending & receiving mms messages where the pictures wont send if I'm on WiFi but send fine when I'm on the data network.
Is there any way to correct/ improve these issues?
Can I flash the stock AT&T rom on the Verizon phone and would it work?
Any help and/ or enlightenment is greatly appreciated.

I have the correct ATT apns and when I receive a MMS I have to turn off WiFi in order to download the picture. It has something to do with the phone
You will get LTE off AT&T (and T-Mobile) if they are using Band4 in your current area. In some areas they use a different band, maybe band 21 - I can't remember offhand. Our VS985 cannot use band21, it uses band 4 and band 13 for LTE though.
It has been figured out that it is also possible to enable Band3 LTE on the VS985, but that is only going to help in other countries, particularly France.

I recently went through this. I was assured from att that I would get lte. Well, after days of trouble shooting with att and trying different hacks I could only get h+
I even went right next to a strong att tower area and still could not. For mms the only way I could get it to work was by using textra, which had a fix for mms by turning off wifi.
What I have learned is that there are some att bands that are locked out in the Verizon phone. There was an xda post that almost had it figured out but nobody could get it working.
H+ is pretty fast by the way, but I was unsatisfied so I am back on Verizon.
And also, do not ever flash anything other than a Verizon rom and radio.

I would message @autoprime about this. He was recently working on unifying all G3 variants' modems since they all use the same radio with different bands unlocked. He may have a method to unlock the bands you need.

Did you make sure Band 4 was supported in your area? I know that's the only LTE band that is supported by the Verizon G3 variant.
The VErizon version uses only the Verizon modem (radio) firmware. It does not and cannot enable the ATT LTE bands.. Just so happens that one band is the same. For the rest you are out of luck. Read this for more information.
