[Q] OTA update, OTA-JEWEL-CL-ICS-40-S-Sprint-WWE... - Sprint HTC EVO 4G LTE

My phone attempted an OTA update just now where it downloaded this file:
OTA_JEWEL_CL_ICS_40_S_Sprint_WWE_2.13.651.1-1.22.651.3_release_277047h447f5lscd1c5uho.zip
I searched around for the file on line and I got a lot of file hosting sites, some labeling it as a virus. My bootloader is unlocked and my phone is rooted as well.
I selected "Update now" and the phone rebooted into Team... (new to android vernacular) bootmenu. I didn't go through with the udpate, I just restarted the device. Upon boot, mksh requested root permission through the SuperSU app, which seemed odd. Does anyone know anything about this file or is this what I should expect when HTC / Sprint attempt to push me updates while I am rooted.

That might be the contacts / ringtones fix.
Mksh is fine, its WiFi related. There was a discussion about it in some of the Rom threads.

From what I read, it looks like I should avoid updates in general when rooted?

You should avoid automatic OTA (over the air) pushed out by carriers and manufacturers because it will cause a lot of problems fir you in the near future. You should always manually update your device if rooted.

Also you can disable your phone from searching for updates by going to setting/System Updates/HTC software updates and unchecking scheduled check

[Q]Prevent Rooted Phone From Updating

I keep getting update notifications for the 7/8/2011 update on my rooted phone. Is there any way to prevent the phone from asking to update?

I've never had it ask me and I've been rooted since the week the phone came out back in March. I assume you must have done something like go to "check for updates" at one time to trigger that.
Update to a better ROM that doesn't allow it to check for OTA updates!

Indeed. I've owned 3 different Android phones and have never seen an OTA update notification in person lol.
Very strange! Most of the time a rooted phone will not check for updates.

I rooted my phone back then also.
I'm not sure if it is the 7/8/11 update as it is the 73mb update. It started popping up Sunday or Monday and keeps asking me to update every morning. I did not press check for update.
To turn OFF future OTA updates, there is a file in the /system/etc/security folder. The file is named "otacerts.zip". Rename it "otacerts.zip.bak", or whatever you want. That will prevent future updates.

Can't seem to rename, move, delete, cut & paste, make new folder in that area. Any ideas on how to modify it?
Do you have Root Explorer installed? It should let you rename a file once you temporarily set the filesystem to r/w.

You need to have root explorer or a similar program to edit, then make sure you enable R/W in order to edit it because by default that's turned off since it's a core system file.

ha sorry.. someone already said that
I was able to rename it, but it still asks to update. Any idea?

I was wondering the same thing. Rooted TB with stock rom. I kept getting OTA update notifications, and got tired of hitting "reject" every few hours... Came in here, poked around, found this thread, and renamed \system\etc\security\otacerts.zip.
After a reboot, i went in "settings:sofware update" and hit "check new"... It found no new updates. Should be good now, I think. Will post again if it shows up again. Thanks guys.

Yep. Definitely update the Rom in order to prevent that from happening. Try finding a Rom with a later build.

For future reference, you can download it and then choose not to install it. It can be downloaded over Wi-Fi, or uses background mobile data but doesn't display the icon.
EDIT:
It took 11 minutes to install, and now I'm Android 4.0.4 and Sense 4.1. I can't find how to change the Recent Apps button to a Menu button. I'm slightly upset about that.
Now on to attempting root!

Is that the "Defer" option, or "Yes", then choose to not install?
Once it downloads I would expect a constant nag to install until you do.

First "OK" to download update, then "Defer" to not install it once it has downloaded. And yeah, you'll probably get constant nags.

Good luck on the root attempt! Please let us know how it goes.
so can we not use this exploit unless we have downloaded the newest update?

Unlike the sense 4.1 updates for one series and EVO LTE, ours does not bring the key remappingoption to settings...those updates changed display & gestures to display, gestures, & buttons...and the option is in there for those users
Got the update but unlike others, mine just downloaded and installed without asking me permission! I was in my car and needed to make a call too! Argh. But at least it seems to have installed OK.
Any idea if this update is available for download on VZW's website somewhere? I am having trouble with the OTA update.
I got the update too...no notice, it just d/l'd and installed without options. What's the new icon in the status bar (left of the wifi)?
Caught mine just before it installed the update and yanked my battery. Every time I boot it back up it tries to install the update. Any ideas on how to get it to clear the update? Don't want to update til we know more about what this might mean for the possibility of S-OFF or root with the current h-boot.
it downloaded mine and i defered it, but where does it download to, i can't find it.

I never rooted or anything. I sent a help email to LG they said send the phone in. I was thinking about flashing to stock and trying to start over. Not even sure if it would help. Basically I think I have to root my phone to fix it lol, stupid.
Getting 0x1117008 error when I try to update, I don't think I've uninstalled any bloat, as far as I know the only things are xposed and root.. Just uninstalled xposed.. Still errors. Any ideas? I don't think there are any disabled apps

Make sure to open Xposed and remove the framework. I pretty sure just uninstalling the app won't remove the files.

I uninstalled the "system updates" file from my phone. It's a blue android icon & 3.4mb in size. Another forum somewhere discussed this and I believe that should work. I used an app called system app remover(pro) - it has a recycle bin and holds apps in there for you in case you need/want to re-install them later. Any root app delete should work just fine though.

You can freeze the update app, but an OTA won't work anyway with a custom recovery.

FIrmware OTA just downloaded is it safe for me to apply it?

I am currently on software version 3.09.605.2. Verizon just forced downloaded a new firmware update to me. The question I have is: is it safe for me to apply it. I have the TWRP custom recovery installed and used Sunshine to unlock and S Off my max. Will applying this update hose me over in any way?
Update to my post.
I decided to try the update after talking to the folks in the Sunshine support forum (I installed Sunshine last year to unlock and S off ).
I have TWRP installed as a custom recovery and when the OTA tried to apply, I received the following error:
Updating partition details...
...done
Full SELinux support is present
Processing AOSP recovery commands...
Unable to locate zip file '[email protected]}@yBugwGuAtA'.
Installing '[email protected]}@yBugwGuAtA'...

E:Failed to sysMapFile '[email protected]}@yBugwGuAtA'
E:Error installing zip file '[email protected]}@yBugwGuAtA'
Done processing script file

I rebooted the phone and everything seems to be working normally, but the OTA obviously did not install. Anyone have a tip as to what I can to to get it to install?

My sprint one is annoying me to flash the update. I'm debating on not as I don't have an issue with my one max except a hardware / software bug that plagues all the HTC One Max's on sprint... ( using bluetooth for streaming sounds works fine but if I use it for calls it will freeze my wifi internet connection but using a dinosaur wired headset for calls doesn't kill the wifi on the phone)
I can't remember what to freeze in titanium either to get around the nag screen to update..
Has there been a flashable zip created Yet? I have the update prompt for about two weeks now on Sprint One max

I erased the otapkg.zip in the cache/fumo and renamed otacerts.zip to otacerts.zip.bak in the etc/security
Worked for 3-4 days.
Every few days ill get the pop ups and go back into fumo and erase the otapkg to make the pop up go away.
I don't care so much about apply it, but would like to figure out a way to block the ota pop up
Has anybody made any progress either blocking the update or coming up with an update.zip? I've been on test devices for a few months and am now going back to my personal One max. I turned it on today just to see the dadgum update popping up.
