Well, bad news folks. It seems that while we can indeed get to Blocking Mode, it doesn't appear to be fully functional. When I first found it and tested it out, it successfully blocked the calls I made from my computer via Gmail and Skype. But after some further tests this afternoon, it didn't actually block any calls made by some friends via their cell phones. So, while it's there, it doesn't seem like it's fully functional. At the very least, maybe this gives us some hope for someone out there to find a way to get it working consistently or that Verizon will enable it in a future update.
___________________________________________________________________________
I was playing around with one of my favorite apps Any Cut. Regrettably, Any Cut (which isn't available in the Play Store any more) doesn't work correctly on Jelly Bean, but it works enough to be able to take a look at many of the shortcuts it's able to find. And low and behold, Blocking Mode was in the list. Since Any Cut is problematic on Jelly Bean (it kind of works, but not completely), I found another app on the Play Store that operates in much the same way that Any Cut does - QuickShortcutMaker.
No root required!
Here's how to get to it:
1) Download QuickShortcutMaker from the Play Store. (Note: the app closed on me a few times while trying to use it, but it eventually worked)
2) After QuickShortcutMaker installs, open it up.
3) Type Blocking Mode in the text field. The app is pretty slow when it comes to populating the available shortcuts, so it might take a little bit. Once it finishes, tap on the first result at the top (It will say "Settings" with Blocking mode underneath it.
4) Rename the shortcut to whatever you want. It's named "Settings" by default, and I changed mine to "Blocking Mode."
5) Tap "OK."
6) You'll now have a shortcut on your homescreen that will take you right into Blocking Mode (the icon will be a cog just like the Settings icon). Open it up and and block away! (Note: the shortcut on your homescreen will be the only way to access Blocking Mode, so if you delete it, you'll have to create a new one in order to get back into the settings for it)
Known issues:
The app will force close when trying to add contacts to the custom allowed contact list. But it seems to work fine when selecting "Favorites" as opposed to creating a new custom list. So if adding contacts to a custom list is force closing for you, add the contacts that you want to come through to your general favorites list when Blocking Mode is enabled, and then use the Favorites option in the Blocking Mode settings.
Thank you!! Now lets figure out how to get the S Planner widget on this thing.

I am as well. It's probably due to the fact that Verizon doesn't have it fully implemented. Try adding the contacts you want to come through to your general contacts favorites list and then select the favorites option in Blocking Mode. That worked for me. I've updated the original post to reflect this.
I didn't think of that. Thanks!

Cant help but think Samsung left it in on purpose so we'd find it and shove it to vzw.
Alot of speculation was they leaked the insecure bootloader for the gs3 as well.
This is a great find, thanks.

Blocking mode allows you to set a specified period of time during which the phone will not ring. But you can set it so that the phone will still ring for certain contacts during the time it's enabled.
For instance, I don't want to be disturbed while I'm sleeping by random calls or texts, but I don't put my phone into silent mode while I'm asleep because I'm worried that I'll miss an emergency call from family. With Blocking Mode, I can block all calls/notifications from coming through except calls/notifications from certain people. So calls/notifications that I feel might be important, like from family or certain friends, will come through, but all others won't. That way I'm only woken up by people who I feel are important enough to wake up for.
It's also helpful in other situations when you're busy and don't want to be disturbed except by certain people.
Wow EXCELLENT find OP!!! Much kudos to you!
I can't help but feel so offended by Verizon and how they butchered this great phone, or rather tried to...
After almost a month solid holding it back from us, they finally release it and what do you know? They strip it of features that are intended to be part of the phone as sold by Samsung. The fact that it's still there but HIDDEN is proof of this concept.
We need to send this info to all the big phone journalism sites out there like Engadget, Gizmodo, Droid-Life etc and blow some serious smoke up Verizon's ass. Let them know we are disgusted by their attempts to remove features from our phones that no other carrier has done.
Hopefully they realize they were wrong and to fix the negative publicity they decide to send out an update that adds the missing features back. They better

I sent it into Droid-Life this morning after I found it, and a short time ago they posted a story about it - How to: Enable "Blocking Mode" on Verizon's Galaxy Note 2
I doubt this particular issue will get enough coverage to cause any measurable negative publicity, but hopefully it can at least bring some of the stuff Verizon is choosing to do to light for a greater audience.

Cool thats what i tought. Thanks for verifying for me!
tried this, and like others got the force closes when trying to add contacts to "custom". Problem is, this isn't working. I even tried allowing no contacts (to block everything), and every call or text still goes through!
I tried this by calling from my work phone (that isn't anywhere in my contact list), and even call or texting from my regular contacts. These should all be blocked, but they all get through- texts and calls.
I've tried rebooting, but nothing seems to be blocked.

This can also be achieved using a custom Launcher like Nova or Apex. To do this, long press on the home screen, click "Shortcuts" --> "Activities" --> "Blocking Mode".
Granted, the OP way uses the stock TouchWiz, but just offering another solution.
Enjoy!

I am looking for a simple app to automatically schedule my phone to be silent (no notification, no vibration) except for phone calls during the night, with different schedules for weekdays and weekends.
What is my best option?
Thanks
See if there's a version of "Sound Schedule" for Froyo. On 2.1, it does pretty much what you ask for $3.
Actually I just installed and set up timeriffic. Seems to do all I need, I'll test in the next few days. And it's free.
Yep ^^ i was going to suggest timmerific! Locale is another good alternative
I use the free version of Audioguru. Timeriffic's user interface was too confusing for me.
I was going to suggest Tasker. It can do that and a whole ton more.
I also vote for Tasker
I'm going to check out timmerific myself. I'm a Tasker lover, but my wife has zero use for Tasker but her freaking SMS and Email notifications drive me nuts all night, especially when she puts the the phone on the headboard.. blleep bleep bzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz.
In case anyone else has trouble finding it (from the spelling ) here's the appbrain link:
http://www.appbrain.com/app/timeriffic/com.alfray.timeriffic
I have my custom battery profile to turn off data after 15-30 mins and that does the trick at night without having any apps. Might want to look into that.
I use an app called Profile. I have a weekly schedule to adjust volume, bluetooth, wifi, notifications, etc based on time. Has worked flawlessly for almost a year, with plenty of updates & added features.
http ://market.android.com/search?q=pname:com.noimjosh.profile
won't let me post a link, because I haven't posted enough. Sorry.

Another vote for Tasker. Although I'm not sure I'd call it "simple".

Thanks to everyone for the vote of confidence re: Timeriffic.
We love hearing your feedback. For the poster who thought it was a bit confusing, as we look to make it better your thoughts are encouraged. We realize it can always be better, though in most cases it runs silently with no need for an interface other than occasional adjustment to a profile. Looking forward to hearing from everyone.
And thank you for using and sharing our little app.
As I said in another thread, I get a lot of use out of "Good Night!". You can set it to receive phone calls only and even narrow it down to who can call in. Set it to happen during certain hours and certain days of the week.
Phone Schedule
I wasn't satisfied with available apps, so i decided to write my own app that would do all the volume/wifi switching and other stuff automatically according to my own schedule. Several weeks ago i uploaded "Phone Schedule" to google play. It's free and free of ads as well.
Another Scenario
OK, I would love to find a way to turn off all notifications, with the exception of one app. My wife has a weather app installed and wants to use the weather alerts for that app at night but we don't want any other notifications coming across. Is there an easy way, or app, that will do that? I've not been very successful at figuring this stuff out in Tasker. Tasker looks extremely useful but the couple of minutes I get per day to look at it, I just can't get what I want to work.
Thanks
+1 for Tasker
I have mine set on silent at night, but I've also got a list of "VIP" numbers set up that it will allow through.
That's fine, but I'm not talking about cell numbers. That's a different ballgame all together, IMHO.

Hello guys, im the developer of Root Call Blocker, an advanced call and SMS blocking app for rooted phones.
The app's home is here at XDA:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1051274
We have had multiple reports that blocking is not working sometimes on the 3D phones, so we need some nice people to do some testing.
You can use the Groups function of the Lite version to do the testing - it gives you almost everything youd want from the app anyway.
Please post comments here, but also use the "Write to us" dialog in settings.
well i was using it on my 3vo but i started having a problem where it basically started blocking everyone so i uninstalled it i would like to use it again if u can tell how to keep it from doing that
edit: it worked fine for a couple days then it started messing up
reinstall it. it whould do that to me when i did an update. other than that its the best call blocker app
We used to have some DB update problems, they've been fixed for ages now...
I've been using this for a while. Lately it will block the calls but still allow them to leave voicemails. (Have it set not to allow)

I'll be happy to give this a whirl...looks to add great features!
Any shot of tester perks =-)
I'll report my feedback to you after a few days to play with it!
There are no perks besides the hint on how to use the lite version effectively
I have the pro version I love the app untill it started blocking everyone is there a way for me to set it up so that it doesn't do that again?
I shot the maid! What can I say? 3vo shooter

I just switched from the Galaxy 2 to the 3D and have the program. First thing was it said the license couldnt be verified. Ill post if anything else doesnt work right. it did work well on the Galaxy two. The only issue I had on that phone was the program would not block people who had "Unknown Number" even after I added it to the blacklist.
Hi, the license is tied to the market in our own unbreakable way. Sometimes the market is buggered and you will get this message. If you do, just connect to wifi and manually check the license through settings!
Also, are you saying you have added the "Private and withheld" numbers item but calls from unknown numbers still come through?

Check through the setting and its still saying no license.
The listing is "Unavailable" I received a call with that one day and I added it to the black list. The "Unavailable" is listed in the black list and has the block icons with it but I did get 3 more calls come through "Unavailable".
Just FYI, I did use this as a Titanium Backup from my Epic 4GT and restored my Evo 3D.
As i said, you need to add the item i described above to your list. Please read the Adding numbers item for more information. Also, if the application is unlicensed, it will only block the first number in your list, so that might be the cause...
Regarding license. Your problem is restoring data through titanium. Use our internal backup method, then perform a clean install and restore the data.
Works great for me
I've been using the paid version of the app for about 2 months now (damn creditors) and it has been wonderful. I block about 6 numbers, notifications work fine and I am alerted when RCB has blocked a call. I'm running on warmtwopointthree RLS1 (nightlies until RLS1 dropped 11-20-11) never had a problem. TB Pro has been restoring just fine.
I did have one issue though, the first time it asked for root I pressed deny on accident.....so i chalk that up to user error
PM me if you would like any further or specialized testing, 10 out of 10 from me!
DISCLAIMER:
1. I just got done perusing 10 pages of hits for "airplane mode" and everyone is trying to do something opposite of what I'm doing. So if there was a post long ago about this, I'm sorry I could not find it.
2. I'm not really that android-savvy. Just good at following instructions.
QUESTION:
How do I enable Airplane Mode "permanently" so that a child cannot disable this mode?
EXPLANATION:
I have several android devices (Droid Xs, specifically) that have clean ESNs and are not currently being used on any carrier. I also have children (5,3,1).
I've SBF'd, rooted, and removed all unnecessary APKs, leaving only a few educational apps and games for the children to use. And, yes, I enable Airplane Mode. They love having their own little "mini" tablets and being able to be like the grown-ups.
Unfortunately, the oldest has a knack for pushing all sorts of buttons and inadvertently turning the phone's radio back on. Now, I'm a bit worried (should I be?) that an inadvertent phone call or use of the carrier's data is going to cost me something.
Yes, I know that I have not associated the ESN with any carrier; however, as I'm sure most of you know, when you dial a number with a non-subscribed number, it still asks you if you want to make the call and charge it to a credit card - at least, this is what the phone did the last time this happened.
So, bottom line, I want to disable my child's access to any carrier's cellular and data networks. And I want to be the only one that could possible re-enable that access.
If there was some way to enable Airplane Mode "permanently" and remove access to all toggles, settings that could disable Airplane Mode, then this would ease my mind. Obviously, I would want this condition to exist only until I either reflashed the phone or had to do something very convoluted (perhaps editing some setting manually via command line or ADB?).
If there are other options, please let me know. I just need a solution to minimize the chance that my 5-year-old could inadvertantly access the carrier's networks.
Thanks in advance.
and they still should/will call 911 regardless of plan

The apps that you can't remove, you can password lock. Slap a password on settings and the dialer and any other app you couldn't remove but don't want the kids in and don't give them the password. There are multiple apps available to do this, and I believe I saw one or two for free on GetJar. GetJar also has a lot of free games as part of their promotion, which may be good for your kids. It's a legit app store, no pirating or anything.
I believe that there's also a script to disable the cell radio. I don't know much more about it, but it may be something to look in to.

Thanks for all the responses:
@ltdanno360 - they will not be using the devices as phones. And essentially, my children have an adult with them 24/7. The adults just do not want to have to look over the child's shoulder 24/7 to see what app the child is running.
@tarends - ok, it'd be helpful to know where this guide exists; however, now I have something to search for.
@Bubble-be - it would be nice to disable the modem; unfortunately, Verizon Droid X do not have SIM cards... am I wrong?
@melvinchng - ok, I'll look into de-bloating those APKs too. I do recall reading something about that.
@plainjane - I'll look into those password apps and scripts.
Anyhow, I do have some direction now and will follow-up (eventually)...
Thanks again, everyone!

That script works great, I have used it for a while, but ever since android moved to the "fused location provider" that script/mod also disables the gps which I still want to function because I do sometimes take my son with me to play Ingress via wifi tethering to my device, and with that mod, Ingress can no longer get an accurate location. neither can google maps or earth.

Thanks for the reply, even though it's a few years later. I actually took a look at the script and it looks like it's perfect! However, since my original post, I've found an app that does everything I want it to do and then some:
Kids Place by kiddoware.
(Sorry, I'm prevented from posting links until my 10th post... I'll update the links later. For now, just Google it.)
It let's me selectively turn off the radio for apps. I can configure which apps they have access to and for how long. I can blacklist/whitelist websites. The feature list is impressive and practical. And it works on all three of my very old Droid X.
Recently I've been getting tons of phone call spam, and it's getting outta control.
Basically I'm seeing numbers like:
7829105866
7436694122
ETC...
No messages left, and when you pickup the phone there's nobody on the other end.
Honestly I don't know what caused this. I do light surfing on my phone. (no porn, casino, ETC...) I usually install apps that I only pay for from the Market, and I usually only install what I need. I do have an unlocked BL & rooted Atrix (currently on stock 2.3.6).
I'm getting somewhere between 3-10 calls a day, and it's getting frustrating! I've been dabbling around lately with call blockers, but will probably need to spend more time researching them.

Probably a better place to take this inquiry is to your provider. An app on the phone would not fix the underlying issue.

Thanks... Haven't gone the CM7 route yet. I'm not sure if flashing CM7 would be a solution to me though, since each one of these calls has been from a different number. I don't know if it's spoofed or what, but I don't know if these numbers are ever gonna run out.
The only thing I got to work is using a 3rd party app to "somewhat" block calls not in my contacts list. Phone still rings first. Unfortunately I still need to receive calls outside of my contact list for work. Probably the only "solution" that would work for now is if I could block out any call outside of the US, and also not ringing my phone when blocked. (since these calls seem to be coming from India on Google searches) I'm not sure if such a solution exists...

You have to pay for blocking with AT&T, and then its limited to only a few numbers. They wont arbitrarily block numbers. I would google the numbers. If they're spam you'll find threads about them. There are apps which block numbers not in your contact list and don't ring 1st. That would work for you for time being. You probably signed up for something where you input your number without thinking. I will try to find app I know about when I get home.

Search Mr. Number in the market. It has the option to send all non-contact calls straight to voicemail (and many other options). So long as you make sure your voicemail notification is silent, you should be set. If these spam calls are conistently blank, I assume they won't even leave a voicemail.
This is what I used to block my ex-wife!

I've been getting a lot of calls recently from random 877 and 360 area code numbers...not sure why but it's pretty annoying
I've gotten all kinds of calls from political candidates to timeshares calls. I have had this problem for a while so I started adding all those numbers to a generic contact (I called mine "Bad People"). I tried all kinds of apps but none worked well. I found that right in the Android contact list, there is an option to send contact straight to voice mail. I can confirm it on both CM7 and CM9, pretty sure blur had it but not 100%. I'm on CM9 right now and when you select the contact that option is available when you hit the menu button, it is not available when you are editing the contact.
Additionally, I was getting calls from "Unknown" callers which is also very annoying, to beat this I added a contact with the name "Unknown" and selected the option for that contact to go straight to voicemail and that has seemed to work. It went from 3 or 4 unknown calls a day to 0 and if it was a real person, they could always leave a message.
As a heads up, I had over 120 numbers on my fake contact and my phone was having a lot of trouble (adding, syncing and blocking), so I broke that one contact into 3 fake contacts, 50 numbers per fake contact seems to work pretty well, just make sure you send all 3 voicemail.
Also if you flash a new rom to your phone, you will have to go to the fake contact and check the box to send them back to voicemail, but that's easy to do.

Just verified this on Nottachtrix. Long press contact, view contact, menu, options, send straight to voicemail option.

That's the one I've been trying out right now. The jury is still out about that one, since the only way that it works well is if I block all numbers not in my contacts, but that isn't doable for work.
The frustrating part is that I am not getting the same number, it's "random" numbers and no number is the same when it calls. They all appear to be coming from India. If I can find a program that blocks all calls outside the US, it would be perfect...
Great solution actually.
Do you think the block list size caused problems?

I had a similar problem, but I just ended up calling AT&T and asking them to change my number, stopped all my problems

How much did that cost you? & Did you have to do a new contract?...
Hi guys, Im the dev of Root Call Blocker, a powerful blocking solution. There have been a few reports of people experiencing issues with the LTE data connection on the EVO, which i dont have.
Could someone please let me know if this is indeed the case?
If you do find an issue please follow this procedure:
- as soon as you spot the radio without a data connection (not after a call) send logs through the "Write to us" item in Settings
- once youve sent the report, try using the Debugging tools found in settings
- if the tools do not help, please send another report - this will still help me track issues
Thanks in advance, PR after the break

Just downloaded the app, but can't test, as I can only block one number in the free version. I'm assuming the post is not for testing bugs in your code related to the LTEVO, but an active advertisement that should be removed immediately by the moderators.

Yes... read the bit about the trial in the op.
Said something mean, then though about it and just added you to my ignore list instead. Death to trolls.
I have owned this app for almost a year. Worked great on my EVO 3D, and is working great on my LTE.

I've owned this app since the evo 4g. Now i have the LTE. I'm not exactly sure what your saying is happening here but, my radio does flake out sometimes. No cell signal at all. The only way to get it back is a reboot. Switching to roam and back or toggling airplane mode fails to bring back the signal. I rooted and installed this app a few days after I got my phone. I've seen this happen about 3 times in the last 2 months. don't know if this issue you refer to or not?

No, this is just normal radio behavior. If it was the app it would simply not work at all ever.

After removing my head from my a$$, I just took a closer look at your app, and actually love it.
Because I made a moronic comment, and because your app is excellent, I purchased it from the Google Play Store earlier today.
Consider this my method of formal apology, and I will be giving it a 5-Star rating in around 15 seconds.
You make some of the most useful apps dude. I see you on multiple forums its great.

Great app, works perfectly on my EVO LTE, worked great on my 3D too!
I'm looking in to this app. When it blocks a call, can it be blocked from leaving a vmail as well? Not that would be useful as he!! for that one bill collector that calls relentlessly.

It all depends on how your carriers vm works. I suggest you try all the reject methods and see for yourself. Also, dont forget to study the way the reject methods correspond to call forwarding (ie, with no vm, the "reject" method in conjunction with "forward when busy" can be used to send incoming calls to a disconnected number).

1.8.3.21
Fixed issue that lead to intermittent blocking on JB and CM10
What reject method are you guys using do the call doesn't get sent to voicemail? I've tried all of them, it blocks the call but they still go to vm.
Sent from my EVO using xda premium
It all depends on your provider. If all send to VM, try the ones in call master, they are slightly different. If all else fails, contact your operator and see what VM settings they will allow you to change.
Anything to report re the recently added features?
Any issues with the JB update?
