Hi guys
A very annoying issue is happening: I cannot assign ringtones to my contacts , not via Contacts, not via Music player. When I try to assign them.via Music player, Set as and so on, I can only see 10 or 15 of my all contacts, of course not the ones I need. When I try to assign it via Contacts, I dont have the option of Ringtone under the respective contacts. I am a very experienced user, so I have my contacts saved in my phone, I dont have them merged with any other accounts, and this never happend before, as I had another S3 before this one and also S2 and other droids. Dont really understand why this happens. When I look inside Contacts I see all of them of course, with the small phone and sim card icons next to them. Any ideas? Thanks

hi guys,
i'd just noticed this problem right now, after i told my friend to change his facebook profile picture - it did not change in my favorites contacts, it remained the same as the one he had before..
i remember that when i first got the phone and people would change their facebook profile pictures they would simultaneously change in my favorite contacts as well..
i already tried removing the contact's photo and canceling the contact's link to facebook and set it all back again, but i still get the previous picture and not the new one.
maybe something to do with cache?.. i'm just thinking out loud here..
any idea guys?
I believe that it has settings for auto update times (much like the weather, stocks, twitter, etc). Check to see how often you have it set to refresh. You can find it under settings/data services/facebook (login, data sync)
well.. yet another issue solved, thank you faelok!
Actually the update time was 2 houres, and it had been alot more than 2 houres since my friend changed his pic, BUT - i logged out of facebook acount via the data services setting, and when i logged back the pictures changed to the recent ones
p.s.
this did not help though when i logged out of facebook via the facbook app, it only worked once i went to settings > data services > turned the Facebook switch to OFF and ON again..
again - tnx alot!
Tnx! This solution solved my problem too!
Quick question about the way the Vibrant syncs with google:
Every time I add a new contact on my phone, it asks if I want to store to phone, or gmail, and every time i click phone assuming that it would automatically sync with gmail periodically.
Is this not the case!??! I installed a new rom recently and it wiped the phone, and the whole time I was thinkin "o well, it'll resync when I link my account" ... after the rom installation, i noticed that few new phone #s weren't there.
Does that mean every time I add a new number I should always save it to my google account instead of directly on the phone?
And for contacts that are stored on the phone, they appear with a green phone logo next to the contact in the list. Those linked with google appear with a black box and a white "g" inside. How do I convert those stored on my phone to link with google? Do I go "edit" --> "link contact"?
Update:
For contacts that are "google" contacts, they can't be categorized into groups on my vibrant either, because they aren't recognized. Only contacts that I've recently added into the phone are recognized. Is there some trick that I'm not aware of?
I second this question. I used a G1 previously and this new method is extremely confusing.
I currently have NO "contacts" and ONLY google contacts, which means apparently I can't set up any groups because my phone doesn't know who my contacts are!

slick, you bring up another point I wanted to ask about as well! Thanks!
I'm going to amend that into the OP
bump...?
I find it amazing that people have figured out how to turn these phones into toasters, rocketships, nuclear-war-launch-devices and other errata, but haven't figured out how to store contacts correctly...

I always make my contacts google, works good for flashing as much as I do, and also if you upgrade your phone in the future, as long as it is android it will automatically put all your contacts in their for you. If you dont want to do that, there is a paid app called mybackup pro that will backup contacts. But I do suggest that you always use google to save time in the future.
You can link contacts, but all it does is make it so it does not show up as a duplicate contact on your list, your best bet is to log into gmail, go to contacts and add them from there. then you can hit menu and filter what shows in your contact list(facebook/twitter/google). You can add them to google from the phone, but I prefer to add them from gmail or google voice, as i can type faster on my computer.

I recently reflashed a rom and I checked and found out some of my contacts were missing. I checked my gmail contacts and it's there. I checked to sync all my contacts on my phone but it doesn't show up on my phone. I didn't have a problem with my first flash with the rom. How can I resync the missing contacts back to my phone? Thanks!
Yeah...this is definitely one of the worst changes made to Android by the Samsung TouchWiz interface. I had a G1 also, and really liked not having to worry about phone/sim/google contacts. I just want contacts that are always in sync no matter where I go. This is the one thing that will push me to go AOSP once somebody releases a decent rom. As far a I know, no custom ROMs have gotten contacts to be anything other than TW.
Hello,
I've sync my Gmail contacts with my ACE. I use the group "My Contacts" to save the contacts I use with the phone. I mean my primary contacts with phone number. Then I marked the option to show only contacts with phone number and unmarked all the others groups from Gmail, SIM card and phone. Doing that my list contact works well.
The problem is that every time I want to add a unknow phone number to my phone contacts it shows me all the others contacts. And others apps like GOsms shows me all the contacts I have in the phone and SIM card. I don't know what to do in order to avoid this. I tried to remove the unknow group from the phone but I couldn't. It is very anoying.
Is it possible to solve that?
Thanks
I have the same problem... All my contacts have multiplied... even when I do only phone number display checked I still have atleast 2 copies of each contact it sure is annoying only thing we can do is manually sit and delete them which is going to take ages... Go contacts has an option of merging you can try that

I don't have this problem when I use another ROM like Cyanogen. I don't if I could install the contacts application that is used with this ROM.
Hey!
My friend just bought a Samsung Galaxy S2, and soon he faced a weird problem; All contacts had 3 duplicates(four numbers total/contact)!
I tried to batch delete them with Samsung's contacts app, but for some reason, they weren't gone! I also tried Go Contacts, but the problem still existed.
The phone is completely stock.
Any help appreciated!
I had a similar problem. I backed everything up/synced to Google contacts. Then I removed the duplicates in Google (on a PC), then synced the contacts back to the phone.
You can merge contacts in Google which should take care of many of the duplicates, but for some reason it isn't perfect & there will be some (there might be a lot) you'll have to delete manually.
I don't see any reason why you can't do this with a phone running stock.
Thanks. I will tell him. I also wondered how can this problem exist on a completely stock phone.
you wont have duplicates in google not i would think anyway .. on ur ph u would prolly be seeing Ph contacts sim contacts and google contacts.. just delete ph and sim contacts, best to stick with google ones as each time u buy new ph first thing u can do is log into ur google account and have them back in minutes..
pretty sure there is a checkbox on which one u want to use , make sure all 3 are not checked maybe..
pretty sure if you go into one of the menus there is an option of which contacts to display, i usually pick sim only and that fixes it
afternoon all.
been using GB for a while now, i decided to move onto a new rom so after trying a few different roms ive settled on a 4.0.4 aokp rom.
one thing i noticed on all the roms i tried was i couldnt get the contacts picture to show when making/recieving calls which was no problem on GB.
i have a contacts folder on my external-sd card which has pictures of my contacts in there which i assign to each person in contacts. but they dont show.
am i doing something wrong or is this feature not available in ics roms?
any info appreciated
tia
I think your google contacts sync the pictures as well when you add a google account. But prior to this your google account should contain the contacts with images.
The photos are embedded in contact files so that you do not have to keep a seperate folder with the photos of them..
After flashing how did you put the contacts back? Your backing-up file of contacts allows for contacts with photos? I mean sometimes I back-up my own contacts and it saves only name and number... What method do you use?
i have no probs with the pictures in the contacts list etc.
the only problem i have is that when i recieve or make a call it doesnt show the contacts pic on screen.
do u know what i mean?
I have the same problem.
Im using active sync and FB.
