[Q] Hoping someone can help - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Sorry about the vagueness of the title but it's not necessarily one specific question so I wasn't sure what to put.
I recently purchased a Samsung Galaxy SIII. I'm fairly certain it's a fake. I bought it from a company claiming the phone was cheaper because their located right near the Canada/USA border. The guy swears that it's not fake however I'm missing S-Voice, motion sensing, and a lot of the cool stuff. The seller claims all that is just software and apps that can be downloaded but I've been searching for about 2 days and just keep finding stuff about rooting and roms. I've even tried searching all the version numbers, which is one of the reasons I believe it's a fake. However through my searches I've yet to find anything that matches up perfectly to what my 'About Phone' section shows.
So I guess first things first I should show you all that information so someone can help tell me if it is indeed fake. Trie taking a screenshot but didn't seem to be working for me.
Model number
GT-I9200
Android version
4.0.4
Baseband version
MAUI.11AMD.W11.50.SP.V20,
2012/08/13 14:56
Kenel version
3.0.13
1211 V30
Wed Sep 26 14:55:17 CST 2012
Build number
IMM76D.19300ZSALE9
Custom build version
1348568386
So I'm assuming it is a fake yes? The "Custom build version" makes me think so, however I havent been able to find a match for it anywhere online. If there's any other info on the phone that would be useful please let me know.
Now so I guess the next question is, whether it is a fake or not like the guy keeps claiming (I guess it's a good sign he's still emailing me back, maybe he doesn't even know.), I want to prepare for the worst. I think I might be able to get my money back from this guy. It was shipped from a Canadian address, and I have a name. Anyway, like I said, want to prepare for the worst if I can't get my money back, so is there anything I can do, fake or not to get this thing operating like a regular Galaxy S3? Whether it be as simple as some software and app downloads like the guy claims? Or maybe there's something else I can do? I've never rooted a phone before but if it could work, it's something I'd be wiling to try.
I apologize if this is in the wrong place, figured it was the most logical board. Thanks.

Yep, you're correct, it looks like a fake looking at the baseband and the other details (Google 'MAUI.11AMD.W11.50.SP.V20').
You wont be able to flash any firmware that is for the official GTI9300.
I'd suggest you try and get your money back if possible.

[Q] GT-I9100M - What are the differences?

Just bought this phone from Virgin Mobile in Canada and the model number show GT-I9100M. Does anybody know what the differences are with this model?
You might like to be a little more specific about the title of your thread - you're not going to attract much more than a few flamers with a title of just [Q].

Can you post the details from *#1234#
Same question I wanted to ask. I got mine from Bell yesterday. The model is I9100M as well.

This is from my phone obtained through Bell.
PDA: I9100MUGK2
PHONE: I9100MUGKG2
CSC: I9100MBMCKG2
Build Info: Tue Jul 12 10:19:43 KST 2011
As far as I can tell the phone is identical except for Bell's firmware (Virgin shares the same firmware). I am however a little disappointed to see that there is so little app support for this phone so far. That little "M" in the device title makes it impossible to get certain things running like Netflix, Tegrak Overclock, and a bunch of new games, one of which is why I bought this phone to play some Order and Chaos, as it supports GT-i9100 but will not show up on Market or download through Android Market via my computer internet browser. It's not yet supported for lots of cool stuff.
I'm sure some support is coming, but so far I've been a little let down as I have been able to do very little I had planned to with this phone as of yet. A couple of weeks, hopefully. Still a great phone over all, I have it rooted and running Stock ROM with a Ninphetamine-2.0.1 kernel and SetCPU overclocking at 1400MHz and UV to 1175mV running stable and fast.
I am not 100% sure, but I think M is for the region. I have not heard that I9100M does not support some apps that I9100 does support! If so, that is not good for us.
It's not the phone, it's region, some apps aren't available in Canada like netflix.

Way to go bumping a thread from July.
= What are you even doing asking whether or not you should root your phone on XDA?! =

[Q] Meanwhile in China... (help for owners of the I9100ZNKI1)

for new GS2 owners in China who aren't sure what they have, dial *#1234# and something like the following will come up:
PDA: I9100ZNKI1
PHONE: I9100ZNKI1
CSC: I9100CHNKI1
Build Info: Mon Sep 5 12:37:29 KST 2011
That's for my new China Unicom (联通) GS2.
I've spent all morning browsing the GS2 section of XDA and still require help. First, though, I'll list what I know to avoid repetition...
the Chinese versions of the I9100 come with all sorts of "enhancements" designed to help us increase/maintain our "social harmony"
some carriers/shops are selling I9100Gs... which are a little different under the hood and don't play nice with some rooting apps/ROMs. If you have a G-thang, be careful!
the current lists of official firmwares and insecure kernels don't include our phone
there is a decent Chinese-made solution for those who want to improve their GS2' flexibility without really going all the way down the rabbit hole...
Now for my questions, which I humbly beseech those in the know to answer:
based on my phone data posted at the top, can I currently use CF-Root or S2 Root?
if my official firmware is not posted, does that mean I cannot return to stock after modding the phone?
can I sub other insecure kernels in during the root process, or must I have a matching insecure kernel?
is there any way I can dump my firmware/kernel and upload here to help with GS2 development?
Thank you for your patience.
Thanks for listing this out. You obviously know more than me. If you get it worked out can you PM me? I am in Beijing, and rely on the shops at Zhongguancun, since I can't do any of this myself..

I've been pretty busy at work lately, but I think I'll have time in November to dive into the Chinese half of the internet and sort through all the utter ****. Hopefully I can find something useful and reliable for us Chinese i9100 owners in the event that xda's own experts don't solve it all first.

Rooted it, and Wifi broke. I was told it's unfixable, any help?

So... I rooted My Att Galaxy SII. But... this jerk who made the video forgot to say NOT to use it if you have the latest version. (Which is just dumb)
So my wifi is broke, can't be turned on for more than a few seconds.
Crap.
Now what do I do? Factory resetting is out of the question as I've spent far too many hours customizing this bad boy to loose it all because some fool didn't think about warning anyone. :/
Oh great xda dudes. Lend me your brains

Wrong forum for ATT Galaxy S2.
#1, you're in the wrong galaxy s2 forum. There's one for the the skyrocket and one for the hspa version. If you flash a kernel from the correct version I believe you should be OK. No guarantees though

Whoops, Yeah just noticed that. Sorry guys XD
So...just flash the normal kernel the same way I did the rooted one? Ugh, Backing up just in case. Man this is annoying. I wish he would of put a warning :/
Flashed to Stock Kernal, Wifi is still broke. ****. So is my phone useless now? :[
Um maybe do some more research before you root. Its not "this guys" fault you phones useless, you have no one to blame but yourself
Sent from my Desire HD using Tapatalk
If a Rooting Process will cause issues on a specific version. THAT needs to be stated in the information. Even if I was an expert I would not of know because it said nothing referring to versions or cautions.
That's like saying it's the users fault if he tried a custom rom damaging said device, because the creator of the rom didn't post information that he knew.
Tis all I am saying
FWIW all the modifications are done at user's discretion so it's never anyone's fault but yourself unless you get someone else to do it.
On topic though, try flashing a full firmware from ODIN which includes the modem, pda and csc files. Don't forget though that you should get this file from the right forum, or else you'll be stuck with a non working phone period.
Also, really, a valid question is, where did you get the rooting method you were trying to use? After all, you DID post this very post asking for help with your SGH-I777 in the i9100 forums. So if you got the method from a forum meant for a device that isn't yours, can you really legitimately blame the poster, just because you used it on YOUR device? I don't think that's fair.
EDIT: or do you have a Skyrocket, which is an SGH-I727?
I'm saying, if I myself, was posting information or a Rom/Kernel, if I know it doesn't work with a specific version of a device, and that users should NOT use it. It is my responsibility to tell them first as a warning, that's all I am saying.
And what I'm saying, is if you got the method from a forum meant for i9100 phones, and NOT for ATT Galaxy S2 (which is the SGH-I777), how is that the other guy's fault that you used something not meant for your phone, just because you happened to find the information? C'mon, man. Take some responsibility.
Couldn't you just get titanium backup then back up everything? Then unroot to 2.3.4 the root your phone so wifi works then restore with titanium backup. I did something very similar to this to fix my phone and I've had a couple problems restoring but that's probably just cause I am a newb. Overall it worked pretty good though.
Something is wrong at the kernel level. Titanium backup won't help.
Um, no.
Your phone = your responsibility. Bottom line. Nothing else is relevant.

Korean version shv-e160l

Hi guys, I think we should have a separate section here so that we could share our experiences with this particular model...I am very sorry if I pissed off any moderators here but since there are no threads regarding this model I felt like I had to do it
I wanna start by telling you that I bought this model for 550$ from Seoul just a week ago and I am very happy. Actually my aim was to get Samsung Galaxy S 3 but I missed it by a week But then saw this phone and said lets give it a try. And guess what , I am more than impressed Anyways after checking couple of forums I saw that official ICS Package was out I upgraded it and then rooted by the help of this forum. Definitely better performance and nice tweaks. But this came with one small issue ; sms problem. when there is an incoming SMS it says "No Caller ID" . Again after little bit googling I found the app called Handcent and it did the trick. Until an international or custom Rom comes out this could be the solution I suppose
One of the biggest differences of the Korean version is you cant go in to the secret menus by typing the secret codes in to the keypad so that caused some trouble while looking for the imei number and trying to change the SMSC ...
Lets share our experiences here so that anyone who has this version can find it here without too much hustle...

This is a bit off topic but..... this link....
http://pdadb.net/index.php?m=specs&id=3569&c=samsung_shv-e160l_galaxy_note_lte
shows it to be basically a ATT type Note....... so other than country specific software quirks........ it is just a 717 note...... I will leave open for now but I think this will not go far, since there are not a lot of Korean Note user to interact with........... If you could please root your phone and provide a sys-dump and kernel and modem extraction would be very helpful to the community....
Thanks Oka1

I already investigated , the blocks dont seem to be the same , the kernel is not the same either , probably needs to be reoriented or somethign and the usr key layout (obviously) needs to be changed . so with a modified updater script and proper kernel by flashing only system it *should work*
Why is this in the development thread? Rom/Mods/Modems only from what I am aware of.

Why don't you just make a bounty thread? If money is involved maybe it might convince a dev to try cooking up a rom and making a custom kernel. It is always nice to get free development but money can motivate people. Put up some money and I am sure others will too and see if you can't get it done. I have seen lots of other threads on your model and I know everyone with your device wants it badly. Its worth a try anyway.
So if I was to unlock my i717 and took it to Korea it would work with their service providers? :s

hi
hi people, i use this korean model as well.
I am new to android (in fact, started 2 months ago) and not a native english speaker. So, i'm having a lot trouble with some technical words u guys use.
The thing is, i'm thinking of rooting my phone. but there arent much forums and threads on this model. I was wondering if the rooting guides here would work on my phone? and there are so many of em (also for i717...) ...
SOOooo, if possible could you quote the rooting guide (or link to thread) which will definitely work on my phone. i cant afford to make my phone obsolete
Help is much appreciated. Thanks
(btw, i'm from Mongolia. heya, fellow earthlings... haha)
Korean devs are at androidpub and matpclub, but not really serious development is there. Few kernel devs like tegrak and mostly cosmetic/porting from International ROM.
Korean note have 32GB/64GB variety, three diffrent carrier (SKT: HSPA+2100 LTE800/1800, KT: HSPA+2100 LTE1800, LGU: CDMArev.B1800 LTE800), hardware button, DMB, carrier specific addon plugins and frameworks, and pink note
and SHV-E160L for LGU, which is CDMA only(like Verizon). Pretty sure ATT note ROMs are not portable.

Why would you even tell him? Better yet...why care? At least he started one thread for a whole model, to discuss all parts. He could be proliferating. Lets be nice here.
When there was no i717 forum, people discussed it in the Int. forum.
The i717R is discussed here...even though the forum is titled "AT&T Samsung Galaxy Note I717" as it should be.
Be easy on him. This is good for a chat, and it's about as close to the right place as it gets. He was honest about the fact that he knew there was no other place, and he was nice.
And his specific version has LTE and is powered by a snapdragon. So perhaps this truely is as good as it gets on XDA.

I was searching for an answer for my sms problem and I found out an answer for something else. I was not able to enter any secret codes for the system menus before now it turns out that there is a hidden menu placed by the korean network which you can enter by typing 319 712 358 and then when it asks fr the password you type 0821 and Vala! You have access to the system settings now.
Now here is the question I can not make a video call because my LTE/3G server dns is a korean server address. Does anybody know where I could find the network server dns addresses for the Gsm Networks...

Hi , as far as I know you can unbrick or recover your phone from any kind of situation. They have released the tool to do that. I can not post another forum's link here so just check the chinese version xda which is koxda and use google translate. You can find a lot of info there but it is hard to understand because of the translation. So actually that is the main reason I started this thread...
Im Glad man that youve open this threat for us.
i also use this device. Galaxy note shv-e160..UNRAZ how did you fix your sms problem? need it badly?? please
As I have wrote before in one of my posts in this thread I solved this with the free app called Handcent sms where you could download it from the market I can both send and recieve sms with no problem. But one handicap is I cant use any Turkish characters nor can exceed the 160 characters limit. Then you see the failed sending the message error... I am waiting for the update which would hopefully solve all the miseries One of the guys in this forum installed Honeycomb from the Koxda forum and solved the problem like that but I dont like using old firmware while there is an update

if someone could help me out with this it would be a REALLY big help to me thank you to anyone who reads this and an even bigger thank you to the person(s) who help.
Why would you want to get rid of CyanogenMod? It's quite possibly the best thing to ever happen to phones.
Especially if you're running cm10.1, it's 4.2.2

You want to get rid of it? Easy
Option 1: return it to seller, demand s/he send you another one with pure stock firmware on it, not a custom one or request for the refund.
Option 2: reverse back to stock (from CM) yourself. Since you're here, you should have read anyway, so read up those threads especially the stickies and DIY.

The other posters Actually have given you good advice, and it appears that they have pointed you to the place to answer your question! Really!
It sounds like you have a modified Straight Talk phone (please note that the ATT version is I777 and the ST version is S959G. It would be interesting to know whether you have an I777s or S959G).
IF you have an S959G, then your best bet is to check the thread posted down below as Phalanx and the others have mentioned --it's literally below the post you created (several posts below now, just look for the title "Straight Talk SGS2- SGH-S959G" (<- or click on these "straight talk" words)
It may seem frustrating to get a phone that is customized, and right now you just want a phone; However, you actually have one of the nicest and newest roms available for this type of phone!
IF your phone boots CM10.1 and you have the normal android screens, then you have everything that the ST or AT&T company would provide on a "normal" phone, but without some of the junk and advertising that often infects our phones! Try it out! The interface is not that much different from "stock."
Still, if you don't like your phone that way, YOU can fix it and it is not really hard, but just takes some reading and patience to gain understanding of the techniques and processes (learning the principles also is interesting! :laugh
But it will take you at least a few hours of reading, and a bit patience to scan through the Straight Talk links and pages. If you do that you'll see others who have your issue, and also others who turned the issue around to make it a plus!
A modified phone is more of a commitment than a stock phone -but it returns more to the user! Especially if you want to adjust it, enhance it, or appreciate it, you have to put in time.
If that's not for you -perhaps turn it around on ebay. But a working CM10.1 on a Galaxy S2 is a good machine!
Good Luck
