[Q] Buy Evo LTE or stick with OG Evo4G? - Sprint HTC EVO 4G LTE

I've had the original Evo4G for 2 years and 4 months now. It has always been rooted and performs flawlessly and does everything I ask of it. When I saw the EvoLTE was coming out I really wanted one and I was/am eligible for an upgrade. I decided to wait a few months for the kinks to get worked out of the phone before getting one. Sprint offers the LTE for $99 presently and I'm tempted to grab one.
In the last few months I haven't been reading the EvoLTE forum but started reading everything a couple of days ago. I don't have a problem with the people who are critical of the LTE and are leaving it for a Samsung. The Evo4G is the best phone I've ever had and is the first HTC phone I've owned. As I said, it does everything I ask of it, is reliable, and I know everything about it.
My question to those who like their LTE's is this: Should I upgrade to the LTE?
I'm not willing to spend what it costs now for a Sprint SamsungSIII, $199-249 and have no idea if I'd like the phone if I did. I am concerned about owners here who tell of the LTE's Sense not working properly, of data problems, rebooting etc. I've never had 4G in my area and Sprint doesn't even have my area in AZ on the list of upcoming LTE service. I've paid that damn $10 monthly charge for 3G only which annoys me since I own a 4G phone that Sprint doesn't supply 4G service for. I can deal with continuing to pay the $10 for no 4g or LTE but I don't want to get rid of a phone that stays connected always, has a good download speed locally on 3g, and always works, for an EvoLTE that doesn't always work and continues to have problems.
So I guess I'm asking for encouragement to upgrade to the LTE. I'm not going to leave Sprint, the true unlimited Data is the most important feature they offer and I need the several Gigs of data each month that I continue to use. What do you owners have to say?
Thanks~

Get the EVOLTE My dad has an og Evo that I rooted and played with and the difference is just amazing. We compared side by side the stock roms and its night and day. Data speeds were better, apps launched much quicker, the camera took pictures faster and higher quality, and the list just goes on.
Don't listen to the naysayers on here, the new evo is awesome. There have been some LTE issues for some but I'm in the same boat as you with no LTE in the foreseeable future in my area.

this phone is dope.. put this phone next to the phone next to the og evo and u will see it smokes the og evo in every way.. i had the og evo.. the evo 3d and now the evo lte.. i never had 1 single problem with this phone.. its beast! :good:

I also had the original for over 2 years and it IS an awesome phone. That said, if you are in a good signal area, the lte will run circles around it. Very comfortable to use and fast. I'm on MeanRom with mine, rooted and s-off. 3g signal reception is a full 2 bars down from OG and like you, I'm not gonna get 4g anytime soon. If you never roam in areas where signal is down to 1 or 2 bars you'll do fine. If you go into areas like that and making calls or receiving data is important I would wait a while. Personally,I hunt in remote areas a lot. If I'm going for more than a day,I just switch back to the OG for the trip and switch back when home. Good luck with your choice......

Honesty, my reception improved over my dads Evo... By a noticeable amount. We live in the boonies and also hunt a lot and he depends on me to get the calls on my phone because his phone doesnt even ring. It depends on where you live I guess.

as much as i like this phone id say check out the optimous g its a really nice phone overall already cracked. and just gonna be a matter of time before some roms start flooding on to it but thats just me i want it but my girlfriend wont trade me lol.

I would definitely say upgrade to the LTE. It's far better than the previous EVOs in every way, as others have mentioned. I'm one of those who will probably be switching to the GS3, but it's more for the experience of trying something different than what I'm used to over the last three years.

Thanks to all of you for your replies. I'm really leaning towards trying the LTE. My home is in a rural area outside the city and I have excellent 3G coverage. If I can have the same result with the LTE, root it, be able to operate on wireless, and have the "Hot Spot" as I do now on the OG 4G I'll be very happy indeed.

I went to the Sprint website and looked at the Optimus. It looks sweet, my phone before the Evo4G was the LG Lotus. It was a great phone for it's era and never gave me any problems. I don't want to spend $199 for a phone at this time, the $99 for the LTE is in my price range.
Thanks for the suggestion, let us know how you like the Optimus if you get it.

If you want the evo is 99cent look for the tread that has the link.

I placed the order using your link. It went through as I am a long time customer. The only odd thing was after placing the order it gave me a confirmation number which I used to check on "my order". The page that came up said, "This order must be manually processed" so I'm not sure what that means.
Do you know if anyone using that link has received their phone yet? People were placing orders around 10 days ago, they should have received their phones by now. Another person on the other forum wrote that he got the "Order must be processed manually" also, he hasn't posted again saying if his phone was shipped and was delivered.
thanks!

On the Private Store page it didn't say anything about Black Friday or it being Cyber Monday or anything special. I messed up because the discounts they give you end up with a $49 credit you can spend as you make the order. I didn't notice this until after making my order and then went back to read other posts on the other forum and a few people talked about using the $49 credit to order accessories.
Oh well, if I get the phone for almost nothing I'll get over not spending the credit.
best,
DC

The manual thing is common for the Sprint private store. I got the evo on white for my wife it took like 4 days after the order was placed. I think it took a while because I ordered on Saturday night. She loves it. I score big points thanks to that website. She thinks I bought it at 200 bucks. I (it was free) just don't tell her.

Don't get the EVO LTE over the GS3. If and when you get LTE in your area, you will regret it.

Stick with the OG. Coworker is doing it and does just fine. Getting the ELTE is really just about ICS improvements and to be honest, there isn't that much if you happen to use custom ROMs on the OG. Plus, he gets WiMax where I'm stuck on 3G LOL (depends on your service area of course, but we have a WiMax tower across the street). I actually still use my OG at home with SWAG on it. Works great.

IF LTE is not going to be available before your next contract (2 years if you buy evo lte), then I would upgrade to the EVO LTE.
My main gripe is the LTE connection issues.... it's incredibly frustrating knowing there is 5-15 Mbit data speeds available... but to get them you really have to fight with the phone's software to access the LTE at times.

We never got 4G service in my area of Arizona. Sprint doesn't even list us on future areas for LTE service. Strange, we're a metropolitan area of over 1 million and never even got 4G. :crying:
It's safe to say there will not be LTE service in the next two years so the EvoLTE will be a good upgrade for me on 3G only.
thanks!

[Q] Who has tb and not in 4G area?

Curious how many ppl got the TB without 4G in your area and why? I have STRONG 4G so yea.
Jeez papi I didn't even get the poll up before you replied lol. Calm down
I do bc I know that when I travel it will pick up 4GLTE and this thing is faster then any phone I have had. Dx d2g fascinate incredible and droid are turtles compared to this

I don't and I bought mine mainly to be future proof. At least for the near future...
I am an hour west of Cleveland, OH which has 4G. By the end of this year Toledo, OH, which I am an hour east of will also have 4G. The Verizon rep, when I bought my phone, said that 4G should hopefully be here by the time Cedar Point opens to help with the excessive amount of strain that the tourist put on their exhisting 3G network. So, let hope that good 'ol Sandusky gets some 4G.
I don't have 4G. But I go to an area that does quite a bit. Hopefully we'll all be grandfathered in for unlimited data. And this phone is a beast!
Sent from my ADR6400L using Tapatalk
I live in Indianapolis, we don't have 4G yet, but will by the end of the year (in preparation for next year's Super Bowl I assume).
I'm just outside Albany, NY and we are on the list for the 2011 4G rollout. As of now, I'm sitting on full 3G everywhere I go.
No 4G here but I was told we would be getting it around August, though not from a real great source. A friend of mine sent me a pic today of his showing that it was working, but only for a short time... must be testing or something. I'm in Sioux Falls, SD. At least I'm grandparented into my plan for when it does come. I love this phone, though, coming from the droid x.
I picked up the Thunderbolt mainly because its the most bad ass phone in my eyes. I'm in Reno NV, currently no 4G but there's rumors floating around that next year possibly. IMO though, my guess would be in 2013.
4g is probably a year from where I live in central california, but if your going to upgrade, mine as well get the latest and the greatest.

Ah cool, I live in Sioux Falls, SD too. I watch my phone like a hawk and haven't seen 4g lte pop on yet. God I hope they enable this soon! A verizon store moron did tell me 4g is coming for us in June but I would take that with a truckload of salt.
Supposed to get 4g in Grand Rapids by the end of the year
probably not gonna have 4g for another year at least
Closest 4G is in Rochester with no plans of bringing it to my area. However the phone is a beast. That, along with being grandfathered into the unlimited data was totally worth the purchase.
Even if the phone didn't have LTE I still would really enjoy it, and since it's not in my area, it's just a bonus that I'll hopefully soon be able to enjoy.
No 4G in Central Louisiana till possibly end of summer, but I bought the phone b/c of the speed and capabilities not b/c of the network, but that will be a nice bonus when it comes out.
I am in the middle of nowhere, and it could easily be 2014 before LTE hits. I was Jonesing for new hardware but couldn't stomach the idea of a Motorola dual-core. I saw that this was going to be MUCH faster than my old Eris (running CM7 ) and I saw that team AndIRC was gonna crack this thing like an egg. So I got this on a 1 year plan. Next spring I can hopefully get some serious hackable multi-core hardware. I figure the Bolt should also retain a lot of value to help finance it's replacement...
Bought and use in a 3g only area, but my home area has 4g so I get to use it once a month when I go home. I haven't been home yet to try 4g, but I will be able to next week.
Other than some odd behavior, I think this phone is better than my incredible.

My market was added to the recent list so hopefully summertime or a little later but I look forward to 4G, or I hope to anyways. If the distances the signal reaches I keep reading about I am optimistic it will hit my house. If not then 4G is more meh than yeh.
No 4g in my area, but I wasn't gonna get the x when this is available......plus I'm covered when 4g does come around.

Still Trying to Decide

Hey LTE owners and lurkers, I'm stilling trying to decide if I'm going to move to this phone from the EVO3D. I can get this phone from bestbuy for $50. I know a brand new phone great price, but then again Mom could really use an upgrade, which Id give her my 3D. 2 questions, Does it look like there will be more development on this phone such as the original EVO compared to the 3D which is pretty sucky if you ask me, and also do you get charged extra for LTE? Thanks guys
You don't get charged any more for Lte than you do WiMAX, oh yeah that's right it wasn't a WiMAX charge it was a premium data charge. If you really need 4G check to make sure Lte is rolled out in your area before you make the switch because its only available in a few markets if any at the moment. As far as development goes, allot of the devs from the 3D came here and also some of the development for the one x can be used on the Lte also. Hope this helps.

my opinion
I came from an EVO 3D also (rooted with some rom, I forget). The LTE is great. I have no problems with it. Fast, much better screen, takes better pictures, much better battery life, ICS is great.
BUT, I forgot how bad Sprint 3g is. Oh my God does it suck. It's freakin painful. At least I was able to grab a 4g signal when I needed it. I'm finding that my mobile browsing habits are changing dramatically to adjust for these horrible 3g speeds...
Good luck.
Im on that wonderfully 3g lol. I live in the sticks of Western North Carolina, where if it aint Verizon, then its probably nothing lol. Yes they get lte here for Verizon, but I just cant see spending that much for Verizon, IMHO. I doubt Sprint will ever get LTE here where im at, but Im thinking its time to make a phone change. Been eligible for an upgrade since 02/12, and probably will check this phone out. Ive had all of the Evos so why not continue the tradition. Thank you for all the help guys
Go for it
In that case, I wouldn't hesitate. I've had all the Evos and this is the best by far.

I believe im gunna take the dive, and get it tomorrow at Best Buy. I want to Thank everyone who had an input in my questions. I know its been asked a million times, but I just wanted to hear it for myself. So off to BB tomorrow morning and I plan on rooting the thing and unlock it hopefully tomorrow as well. We will see how it goes!
Thanks everyone
This evo is almost perfect almost being no lte in Rockford illinois. I just came from TMobile a few weeks ago and there no comparison TMobile poops on sprint 3g tmobile 2g is faster. Even when i got throttled at TMobile it was faster than sprint but i banking lte will arrive soon.

[Competition] TMobile to bring back TRULY UNLIMITED DATA

You read the title correctly, it was leaked by tmonews and androidcentral a few hours ago. The question is would you switch to Tmobile for 4G HSPA+ data speeds with not cap or overages, I have to admit that im seriously thinking about it.

No go for me because T-Mobile is the only cellular company that does not offer a corporate discount with my job. So blah. Unless it would end up being cheaper, but I doubt it. Also we still don't know enough. Is it truly unlimited or does it get throttled?

I'm seriously considering switching in Cincinnati...service is so bad I can't stream any music at work and it took me almost 5 min to be able to post this reply due to my 20kbps download speed.
I know its a little more considering I would need two lines but if I actually have WORKING DATA instead of paying for absolute garbage its worth something.
Listen up Sprint this is coming from a 10+ year customer...get your act together.
Yeah this news really got my wheels turning. Truly unlimited data, blazing fast speeds & looks to be cheaper. Only reason why I've stayed with Sprint this long was because of the data & they used to get the best phones but now their phone lineup isn't as strong & their speeds absolutely suck. I know people in Cricket & MetroPCS who have wayyyyy faster speeds at half the cost. With phones almost as good as the LTE. This may be a game changer for me.
Sent from my EVO using Xparent ICS Tapatalk 2
I wouldn't really consider this 'COMPETITION.' Instead, more of a rescue mission to save what's left of that terrible network.
Ok the data is unlimited... So they say... But what about everything else? Sprint offers unlimited everything for 79.99 (who calls land lines anymore and needs more than 450 minutes... Really?)
Shifted from Outer Space
Sprint fan aside, maybe, if T-Mobile had better voice in the downtown area. I would like the option of having an unlocked phone + unlimited data.
My service with Sprint has been pretty consistent & LTE work has started in my city so we should go live in November/December. Plus everything is unlimited, sans calling the office & grandma.
I've been with sprint since 98. That being said I would switch if I wasn't in contract. Sprint has had me waiting 3 years for "4G". Bought my EVO with promises of 4G in San Diego which never came true. Add the abismal 3G speeds that are slower than they where 4-5 years ago when I had my HTC Windows mobile phone. The only big thing stopping me from switching is the fact that I get a huge discount from Sprint through my employer (which isn't that big anymore since they only apply the discount on my primary line and not my wife's or my sister). That and my wife loves her Iphone which Tmobile doesn't have. Oh well...here's to hoping this vision thing works out.
I would switch if I wasn't on contract. It would be a tough decision between the one s and the s3. I love HTC but I need me a huge screen!

Likelihood of a LTE fix?

Since Sprint and HTC don't officially acknowledge the problem with switching and staying connected to "weak" LTE signals on the Evo, do you think they will ever release a fix? I am frustrated with the horrible 3G speeds in Houston while being in locations with a LTE signal - I sporadically connect to 4G at work and home but it never lasts.
I really like the EVO 4G LTE and various roms like MeanROM, but I am about to give up on Sprint due to not being able to use my phone except for on wi-fi (3G speeds often at 0.15 Mbps or below, only improving in the early to late evening). If the radio was at least fixed to properly connect to LTE then I could at least better evaluate the situation before calling it quits, but as it is right now I have no hope of ever using LTE on a consistent basis. The only reason I stayed with Sprint in the first place was knowing that Networkvision would go live in July that would supposedly improve 3G speeds and enable LTE. 3G speeds have nearly been unusable during mid mornings/afternoons for over a year now and NetworkVision didn't do anything for me yet.
for what i pay im happy with sprint
and ive experienced 4G at some parts here in the Bronx and its pretty fast to me
maybe its just your area. if i would ever switch i would go prepaid
Its more of a sprint issue, I have to do the airplane trick on all the lte phones in the house and as far as I know the gs3 and iPhone 5 don't have handoff issues like the evo does
This issue was known of before the phone was even released. Sprint has tried to fix it, according to their updates atleast, obviously it hasn't happened. At this point only time will tell. I wouldn't worry about it too much, if your that mad with sprint, switch carriers.

Pretty much anyone with an EVO LTE signed away another two years, so leaving will cost $350 plus the cost of the next phone.
It seems to me advertising a phone as LTE, especially to the point of actually adding that to its name, and then delivering a phone with this defect should be grounds to cancel your contact, but not in the real world I guess.
It's no wonder Sprint and HTC won't acknowledge the problem. If they did they might open themselves up to costly damages.

Well, since I bought my phone as a pre order, that would have been a bit difficult.
Not to be a ****, but I love when people think they know everybody's personal experience.
Sprint touted this phone as being an advanced LTE capable phone, and promised their network was just around the corner.
They then published a schedule stating that los Angeles would go live in September. After I bought it they changed to October. It's November. If not for xda, I still would not know LTE was even here yet.
My experience with AT&T does not leave me with much confidence Sprint would swap me out with a GN3, especially since I actually bought the thing from Wirefly.

I preordered my Evo LTE and it was not well known at the time to have lte issues as no one even had the phone. And when it came out no LTE network went live until July. So how was I supposed to magically know to avoid this phone and wait 2 months for the Samsung s3?
Also Sprint isn't exactly acknowledging the lte issue, they certainly didn't do so when I called to complain. In fact all that has been offered so far is to exchange my phone for a refurb LTE which won't be any better and possibly worse. They weren't receptive to exchanging to a Samsung galaxy s3, they probably will only do so after a lot of effort and multiple exchanges of the evo for crappy refurbs. Even then I have no idea if the 4g network on Sprint is even worth the effort in my city as the evo doesn't give a proper representation of coverage.

Will they actually swap it out for me?

Go to a corp store and explain the issue show them in store the sgs3 with signal and urs without it if need be or possible... It might take them replacing ur EVO once before they do the swap for sgs3 but I've seen many do it easily.

I preordered my Evo LTE and it was not well known at the time to have lte issues as no one even had the phone. And when it came out no LTE network went live until July. So how was I supposed to magically know to avoid this phone and wait 2 months for the Samsung s3?

You called and spoke to an entry level CS rep.... You could call again and get them to tell you WiMAX rollout is going on still on your area...
It's documented on sprints side and many reps if they have a clue know exactly where to pull it up at stating such...

It seems in areas where LTE is rolled out and covers well, the transfer or handoff works somewhat well. In areas where LTE isn't completely rolled out, the handoff fails at times, hence the airplane mode switch seems to work. Sprint acknowledged an issue with the handoff in their own forums. I will say, with the newest CMX, I have less issues than with any sense base, for me anyway the handoff almost works every time from LTE to 3G. just my opinion

I'll sell the phone if it becomes an issue for me. I wouldn't even give a second thought to it. Since i have no LTE for most likely a very long time I will probably have moved onto my next device. I know s4gru says October for the first LTE sites in MN but I suspect they are way behind target of that. I did the whole toggle wimax garbage for two years with my evo shift. While it was more to save battery than for signal issues I don't want to do that again. I want my phone to work as it should without having to toggle stupid switches. Every time you do that you have to wait for the switch to take place and any data connection that is happening seems to get dropped and you have to reload.
I highly doubt Sprint will ever officially confirm the existence of the flaw because they can very easily blame it on the network. Since LTE will not be fully rolled out for a very long time I have a feeling the EVO LTE will be long in its grave by the time they would have to admit anything.
I've talked to many Sprint reps and beyond 1st level. I haven't found any reps that state the problem is known. I've called HTC, they state there is no problem and offer to check the phone (w/ a fee if no issue is found). The Sprint reps various choices of BS are that it's the new network or different phones handle it differently due to signal optimizations for balanced loading. I go to Houston quite a bit in the evenings and weekends now and see the issue all the time since there is usually an S3 user with me as well. Unfortunately I can't go to the Sprint store while I am there, so I take it to my corp store where I bought the phone. They tell me to take it to the repair store (affiliate), repair store shrugs their shoulders says its maybe the new network, laughs, thinks I'm nuts, tells me to take it to the corp store to get it swapped, and.... well you get the picture.
The evo lte i had gets no 4g and 56k 3g speed all the time. Chicago has no 4g yet. I got a Samsung galaxy s3, and rocking lte all over Chicago. Sprint lies and htc ffffed up this phone and wont admit it. But at least I got both phones for free.

Your completely right. I'm in San Antonio and at first when lte was getting deployed I would get it sporadically, but now I get it constantly and its consistent.

You guys that don't have problems, hang on to those phones and don't touch that firmware as you don't want to mess up the special firmware that HTC sent to your phone with the issue fixed.

No JB soup for you

Let me start off by saying I'm an EVO/HTC fan, and not an employee of HTC or Sprint...
After years of no 4g for Original EVO, 3D and now the LTE in a large city in South Florida, I finally get fed up enough to call HTC USA, because if I'm not getting 4g, I at least want to JB. After stopping several support individuals and managers from reading from their script, I finally got an answer that floored me. Do to the different processor and chipset in our phone, HTC has not even released a JB source to Sprint. While the agent was VERY careful to never use the word NEVER, he basically said they have no current plans to release JB for the dual core USA/Sprint model, which is why we were left off the upgrade list in the first place.
Other models of the One series have already received at least a prep download for JB. If Sprint doesn't at least have the initial download to prepare our phone for JB, it doesn't look too good for us.
I think Sprint and HTC have no intention to release JB to us, and we need to accept it. I hope I'm wrong, but it was the most info I have ever received from HTC.
Lucy, you have some splaning to do!
They find the MSM8960 different? The rep may have stopped reading his "script", but may have made up a new 1.
I really hope you are right. Today was the first day I actually felt it wasn't going to happen.
I never thought Samsung would be better at pushing patches out to the public.
If it is true, my support with HTC will be finished. If Sprint can't get lte near Ft. Lauderdale by year's end, I might finally switch providers after 12 years. I've paid a premium to be an early adopter, phone-wise, and have never seen any type of 4g signal. Even worse, the 3g signal has become almost unusable. Unlimited crap is just that, a lot of crap. I'll be willing to bet, when 4g finally becomes the standard for sprint, it will be the end of unlimited.
I've stuck around because MeanRom makes my phone fly. Of course the data speed is out of his control.

there currently is LTE coverage in the Lauderdale area according to Sensorly. The airport is covered in it, sections of I-95, Broadview Park. Just give it time, deployment isn't that quick.
I keep saying the Evo LTE is still a different product line to HTC and Sprint, no matter how many similarities there are with the HOX. From a project and product management perspective, each device will have it's own requirements, development schedule, deliverables, etc. Then each carrier adds another set of differences. We can never expect to have everything the HOX gets. The HOX and HOS are their global handsets, and we're off in our own little US/Sprint only/Dual core/LTE world. I'll be glad if we ever get a JB upgrade, but we better not hold our breaths because we're just going to turn purple.
This doesn't make any sense...
F IT let's all go back to the HTC Hero for the Hell of it.

I still got mine
So bc there is no leak you think they don't have a prep build they are working on?..... Come on use some logic bud, we are getting JB.
Locking this thread btw as xda is not a place to come and just have a complain fest like this will turn into, esp while there is a JB thread already.
