Hi, A friend of mine has a problem with the galaxy s II
His data connection is consumed very fast.
When I checked his data usage it showed Android OS as the main consumer, and used data connectiona lot more than all the other applications combined!
So can anyone tell me which feature in Android could cause this? (I thought it was syncing bills but he has only facebook/whatsapp/google accounts in auto sync and no weather service).
Thanks to all who help.
auto sync is part of the android OS, try turning off auto sync for a while and see what happens to Android OS.

+1 and you can disable data connection when youre not using internet

When i insert my SIm card and set up my data plan on Cingular-AT&T my connection turns on automatically without me starting it. How can I turn this off? I do not want it to turn on automatically...
JM
You can set up a dummy connection setting, and switch to the dummy when you do not want to use the data plan. It would still allow you to make and receive call, but you can't surf the net or use email using the data connection (of course you could still use WIFI to surf the net, use email, update weather, etc).
They may be more elegant way, but this is the way I use when I'm dangeriously approaching my download quota limit.
auto connect
WHy does it auto connect by itself? The unit will be sitting on my desk and I look at it and its connected.
Can I make a setting that only connects manually like on my HTC touch phone?
Is this a push email setting?
JM
it'll depend on what you're running, htc weather will auto update, as will several others.
Paul at modaco has written a piece of software to easily switch between no data and data.

Thanks for the info. Will try this out.
I have a HTC Fuze. The last few ROMS that i have been using (Energy, RRE, Tael), all the Apps always use the 3G internet to do their work even if a much faster Wifi is connected. Is there any way to make all apps(including things like email) globally prefer the Wifi when available? Also I dont want to have to keep changing settings to do this, It simply needs to be "If Wifi available use it, else use 3G"
Thanks in advance.
What i did was to go to start>settings>connections>advanced>select networks and change the default connection to the internet to "My work network", rather than my 3G network. This way, if theres any connection to the internet needed, my phone will use my wifi connection. The problem with this, however, is that when you dont have a wifi connection available, the phone will not connect to the internet unless you change the above setting back to your 3G network. If anyone knows a better way, please let us know
no i cant keep switching. thats too much trouble. there must be a better way.

Does it automatically connect to WiFi when a known network is within range even when the phone is in sleep? If yes, does it disconnect once not in use for a while?

As far as I know there is no way to do it automatically. You can use one or the other but they must be switched manually. All HTC phones have always worked this way. Maybe if the demand was high enough which apparently it is not a Chef could come up with an app that would do it. But for now you must do it manually.

that is extremely failurous. not preferring the fastest internet connection is major fail. did not know that.
My phone does this automatically. It uses the WiFi whenever it's on. If the WiFi is off, it uses the data connection.
Maybe I'm understanding it wrong?

what the heck? how? u must help me find out..
i think it does prefer wifi over 3g in WM 6.5...!!
to check it out here is wt i've done....turn data connection off...check that its on in the notification manager "when u click on the task bar"..then run any app that needs internet " opera, msn messenger, email...etc" while this app is online..
now there r two ways to check it
1-the notification manager & see if it turned to 3g data connection...if so u should find a timer running in ur service provider section, if not then its only using wifi
2-check the communication manager & see if it turned the data connection on, if its off then its using wifi...
thats how it is with my touch pro...i'm using energy rom nov. 08 build
Indeed it prefers wifi connections 2 data, but You have to :
1. Have Known wifi spots in range
2. Keep wifi connection on, while in stand by
Keep in mind that if a program starts to use the data connection it wont change to use the wifi one. So firstly connect and then open programs.

apparently its some sort of combo of this. i am using 6.5. any apps that have been using 3g continue with it. and i have to go to the comm screen and turn off data to force new apps to consume wifi. which isnt too bad, certainly not as bad as going to the network options. i would wish they made this a bit more seamless like with the desktop technology, i can switch from wired to wireless lan without even dropping a skype call.

now i have discovered a new problem. even if i open the app after i have wifi turned on and data turned off, some apps just dont want to use the wifii.
Bing maps and google maps for example just tell me there is no internet.
this is really pissing me off, whats the point of having wifi on a phone if the apps wont use it. i dont really care about the google location service if the data is through the internet, but atleast turn on.
lame.
I have read that Wifi Sharing 1.0 is required for tethering, but I have frozen Wifi sharing 1.0, Wifi 1.0 and Wifi Sharing Manager using Titanium Backup Pro and I am still able to hotspot tether my laptop to my S2.
The only internet access I have is via my S2. Have I misread.
I am trying to freeze apps that I do not use to save battery, not that my battery life is bad but every little helps.
I am rooted using Lite ning 1.4 and I can get 10 hours with tethering on all the time along with a few calls, texts and about an hour of gaming.
I *think* wi-fi sharing has to do with the Samsung Share thingy (where you can stream audio/video between various Samsung devices like phone and netbook for example) rather than anything to do with tethering.
I freezed Wlan 1.0, Wifi Sharing and Wi-Fi Sharing Manager. No tethering problems at all, but new wlan passes are no more synced with my google account.

After freezing Wifi 1.0, Wifi manager etc., some of my contacts have disappeared. Just defrosted these apps and some, but not all of my contacts have come back. Bizarre

that's odd. I have no missing contacts either after disabling them all. No idea why they'd have anything to do with the contact list...
Is there a way to reconnect to wifi whenever an application accesses the network?
Background: I have a rooted e-book reader that runs Android 2.2 (Sony Reader PRS-T1). The system offers an option to automatically enter wifi standby mode when the connection is idle, which I like: This behavior saves a lot of battery juice when reading an e-book.
Some of the preinstalled apps know how to reconnect the wifi whenever they need network access. Unfortunately, conventional Android apps do not know how to do this and fail. For example, I have installed the Kindle for Android app, and it fails to sync reading positions unless I have manually re-enabled the the wifi before trying to do so.
Is there a method to leave wifi standby mode and reconnect to wifi whenever there is demand?

Yes. You could buy an app called Tasker. It automates whatever you want on your android so you could tell it to, for example, turn wifi on when certain apps run.
There is also a free seven day trial version so you could see if it is worth it for you.

Yes, I know about Tasker, and have thought about it before. Unfortunately, it does not quite cover my use case:
Often, the need for Wifi access doesn't depend on which app is running, but on what I'm doing with one particular app. In case of the Kindle app, I'd like Wifi to go disconnect when reading, but to reconnect when syncing books or reading positions.
Hi,
I search over the forum but didn't find the answer to my question.
I'm the happy owner of a GS3 stock rom, not rooted, fresh out of the box.
It works verry well. I'm impressed by the device itself but I struggle with a problem.
My exchange account won't syncronize over 3G. Every few minutes, I get a message saying "unable to connect to [my account]"
gmail client works just fine but I have two email addresses (pro and home).
This is not a connectivity issue as other apps works great aover 3G and this is not a network limitation as I can connect thru other wifi networks.
I can do all necessary test and I had a look in all settings I can find without any succes until now.
I had 3 FW update since I own the device, each time I hope it will solve my probelm...
Thanks for your help.
Best regards from Belgium,
JC
Did you checked out if in Settings _Data Usage- not added to exceptions to sync only over WiFI ?

I checked and I can find any exceptions (I can't find the options, to be clear). Under the Data Usage, I have mobile data and Wifi pages but I don't find any way to manage exceptions.
There is a similar issue with the hotmail app - SSL auth error on 3G - Fine on Wi-Fi
The way to resolve that issue is to uninstall the app - remove any accounts associated to it (the hotmail sync account removed authomatically) reboot the phone - then set everything back up BUT DO SO ON 3G and not Wi-Fi!!! For some strange reason this sorts out the issue and can then connect on both 3G and Wi-Fi.
This is obviously specific to the hotmail app - but as this is also email it may also resolve your issue - Worth a shot at least. .Good Luck

How can I uninstall the stock email app? I will try to clear my account but not uninstall the app and see if it solves my problem. I will try it tonight when I will be back in my country and not in roamuing anymore.
Thanks
I don't use the stock app at all - I guess you can remove the associated accounts under settings/accounts then go to app manager and clear cache and data.
My issue was due to a self signing certificate or something - guess that a hidden setting somewhere changes when you accept but wasn't working correctly when setting up accounts over Wi-Fi.
Hope it works for you. You not the option to get a specific mail provide app from the playstore? - Could be another option
I will let you know
I'm quite happy with the stock mail app for now. If I can solve my problem by reseting my account over 3G, I will keep it.

I resolved this issue by:
- deleting the Exchange Active Sync eMail Account I set up over WiFi (Email->Settings->Delete Account);
- created an EAS Account over 3G, selected "Accept every SSL Certificate" (Email->Settings->Add Account).
It seems that creating an EAS Account over WiFi prevents the same account to access the server over 3G/EDGE/... connection.
Tried on Sony Xperia Tablet Z SGP321, default mail app, with Android 4.2.2.

Problem solved!
Hi,
I have also an Galaxy S5 Android and sinds we have Exchange 2010, it does not synchronize any more. If I put my phone on SAVE MODE, it doesn't work. If I DISABLE the SAVE MODE it works.
Go to Setting => Power saving => put Power saving mode OFF
good luck.
