Success with Tether after root? - Verizon Samsung Galaxy Note II

Anyone having success? This is the make or break for me right now.

I have Portable WiFi Hotspot installed and it works perfectly.

Those with unlimited data plans do not get free tethering, it is blocked and requires you to pay for it.

There is always the chance of bricking when you flash anything. The universe could decide your house no longer needs power in the middle of the flash and you could be in a world of hurt because of it. Not likely though. Many (including myself) have flashed using this method with outstanding success. And as for advantages. Root is what I needed to get wifi tethering to work, remove bloatware, and run many purchased apps that required root.
I posted this earlier but will post it again for how I achieved wifi tethering:
"Just got flawless wifi tether running with TrevE's modded wifitether.
Can be found in his original post:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1988735
I used the WifiTether-TrevE_Mod_11_22_2012_driverReload2
My settings:
Device Profile: Generic ICS/JB (wlan0)
Setup Method: Netd-NDC (master)
Send Netd Max Client Cmd - Checked
Wifi-driver reload 2 - Checked
Routing fix - Checked"
Happy rooting!

Not true at all.
I have unlimited and i use portable hotspot which bypasses the VZ activation and I've never been charged.

The WiFi Tether - TrevE Mod method did not work for me.
However, this simple little app does work:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=kr.core.technology.wifi.hotspot&hl=en
I guess the authentication system used by Verizon isn't all that robust, if all you need is a simple app that doesn't even require root to bypass the subscription check and start the native WiFi tethering. Heh.

I have this issue nonstop.. It's random and annoying..
I've gone an hour or two without problems and then all of the sudden 4g icon disappears and comes back over and over until I stop tethering and restart it.. and then it happens immediately.. If I keep restarting tethering eventually it will hang on without dropping out but it will start it's crap again eventually.
I could have sworn Trev-E caused the phone to do the same thing. I want to say the issue is the phone and or the radio firmware.. possibly the kernel?

Is there a thread on how to set it up properly to work on the VZW note2? It always crashes for me when I try to start it up.

These settings for TrevE Mod have worked perfectly for me on Vzw since the first day I rooted. Also, make sure you have the right version from 11/22/2012 and uninstall any old versions, apparently it does not upgrade very well. Good luck.

4G WiFi Tether Infrastructure Mode Workaround

Credit goes to colestein on androidcentral for this. Figured id post it here since i haven't seen it anywhere here on XDA.
I'm using WiFi Tether 3.1 beta 6
Download the Data Enabler widget from the Market
Setup Wifi Tether as Nexus One, netd, mms clamping enabled
Use Data Enabler to shut off 3g
Start tethering
once tethering is started, enable 4g
You should have a consistent 4G signal and the benefits of infrastructure mode!
Has anyone tried this and gotten it to work? Im completely functional except my phone reboots once every 2 hrs or so...
I have 3 questions about wireless tether. Currently have it set up in infrastructure mode, and it is working great. I have wake lock on, not disabled because if the screen went to sleep, the connection would drop.
Wifi Tether profile is set up as Nexus One, netd enabled.
Here are my 3 questions.
1. When I enable wifi tether, the sprint tether icon appears in the taskbar. The software works, and I tether fine, but am I now registering tethering with the sprint network?
2. I do not have mms clamping enabled, What does it do, and should I have it enabled?
3. What does the enable routing fix option do?
This is working for me as well
Thanks!!
Sounds good, I look forward to testing this once I receive my Photon.
We have a similar fix like this for the Epic4G in that forum, but it's much more complicated and involves editing the framework.jar of the ROM.
Since 99% of tethering apps are filtered on the market for our phones, thanks to Sprint, a post to the file or an attachment of it would probably benefit the users of it in a greater capacity.
By the way folks, even though he isn't the creator of this workaround, the OP usually deserves a little thanks...
Worked for me in 3g. Very fast. I also get the tethering or mobile hotspot active (sprint mobile hotspot) but I just ignore it.
BTW, how is battery for most while plugged into the computer usb for charging while tethering. Mine can't keep up with the drain from the phone.

Woah! Awesome. Is PDA-Net an App or pls explain?
EDIT: NVM, found it. Can't believe the Market would allow such an App... thanks guys!!
Im using 3.0. I installed it. Then installed data enabler widget. Turned off 3g started 4g. Switched tether to nexus one/netd. Started tether. Should have error. Restarted tether. 4g infrastructure, Worked great. Figured it out this morning. No sprint popup in status bar either. Running netflix great through ps3.

There's a new version just released on 11/27/11, im gonna test it and see if it changes behavior in any way.
Data Enabler you can easily get from the market.
My phone still reboots every 2 or 3 hrs while tethering in infrastructure mode, not sure how to fix that

Do any root-based wireless tethering apps work?

I rooted my phone, and tried using WiFi Tether, Wireless Tether for Root Users, Barnacle, and Open Garden, but none of them work. Most throw an error of some sorts, while one just force closes and the other starts with no errors, but when I attempt to connect it shows as an ad-hoc rather than a network, and won't let me access the internet.
Do we need a modified kernel to get this to work properly?
WiFi Tether works. I get an error on start up sometimes. To inconveniently get it working sometime I have to go into SuperSU and select WiFi Tether then click save. Start up WiFi Tether after that and it works fine.

Not any extra charges than using data regularly. But if you tether 7 gigs of data on a 6 gig data plan you will be charged for the overage.

Thanks! This answers my question.
I had a DROID Razr and used the "entitlement_check”" method with SQLite Editor and this method allowed the data being used with Verizon's Mobile Hotspot not to count against my data plan. I am looking for a way do the same with my Note 2. Anyone know of any Apps or leads on how to accomplish this?
My Note 2 is rooted.
Are you sure? This doesn't sound right.
There's just no way that you can magically access data network and not let it count. Sure your device won't be the one using it 1st hand, but something is receiving and transmitting data through your phone's connection and I'm sure Verizon will know data is being used.

Not sure why you are hanging out in the DNA forums, when you a note 2 .... but anyways, on to your question ...
It sounds like when you got your Note 2, you switched to a shared data plan. With that plan, you should be able to use the built-in wifi hotspot, without any issues except one: it will come out of your data bucket.
When you had the Droid Razr, the sqlite change merely made it so you could use the built in hotspot software w/o VZW checking to see if you paid for it, but it DID come out of your data bucket (but you were probably on an unlimited bucket at the time).

He wasn't saying it doesn't charge for data, he's saying it doesn't charge data as being tethered data. For example, using Verizon's tethering app, that goes against a different limit, with an additional charge. With the wireless tether app, the data being used just goes against your regular phone data.

I am basing this on several road trips I made where my family used my DROID's hotspot to access the internet with a laptop and an iPad. I checked my data usage both on "My Verizon" widget and my bill and the data usage was not significantly higher than normal. Now, maybe the above method truly uses my data plan and I just did not notice a significant difference on my bill.

so what if they know data is being used. The phone is capable of transferring any packet data on its own that a tethered device might generate so yes they might be able to tell but ive been tethering with root for years without ever subscribing to there proprietary tethering service and not once have they made a complaint or even mentioned it. 30gb + every month for 2-3 years FTW. I wouldn't be worried but i suppose its a personal choice. I pay for unlimited and the device is my property. How i utilize the two in concert should be my own decision.
Well this is what I found out.
1. Both methods to get free WiFi tether just keeps Verizon from "seeing" that you are not subscribed to the "Mobile Hotspot" feature.
2. Using either method uses data from your plan. If I have an 2 gig plan I will still get charged extra for data over 2 gig.
3. I thought either method hid my data usage from Verizon while tethering which would keep me under my plan's limit.
4. I am on a share everything plan so I can use the "Mobile Hotspot" feature w/o paying for its use but need to watch my data while tethering more closely.
5. Thankful for various threads that helped me figure all this out!

What I was saying was that using a WiFi tether app will still use your data. To me it sounded like the guy was asking if he tethered that it wouldn't count against his data limit, which he was. I was telling him that there's no way it could work like that.

Wifi Tethering?

I've heard that Foxfi doesn't work with the Droid DNA--is there any way to use turn this device into a mobile hotspot without having it pre-included in my data plan?
This is my first smartphone; I've been using my Nexus 7 and a dumb phone for the past few months now, and I felt I should upgrade to a smartphone since I'm not living on campus anymore. This seems like a great phone in and of itself, but I'd still like the option to tether my tablet. Any suggestions?
As long as you are rooted, you can use WiFi Tether For Root Users (yellow WiFi bars picture) and it will tether just fine. You won't need to include tethering in a data plan to use it.

I am seeing exactly the same issue. Numerous errors on starting, unable to tether. Or more precisely, other devices can see the hotspot and tether to it, but do not get Internet access.
My main problem is that my phone will show up as a device instead of a router (like it used to on my OG Incredible), thus not allowing other phones or tablets to connect to it because they don't see the connection. Laptops work find though. I use "wireless tether for root users" with the green signal symbol and not the newer version because the new one doesn't show the data speeds and total data used in the app.
I am using the latest yellow version and both my Galaxy Note and Lenovo laptop tether to it but do not get Internet access.
sorry for jumping on old post.

[Q] Help! Tethering Droid Incredible 4g w/Unlimited Data

Is it possible to tether a rooted droid incredible 4g running the stock HTC Sense image that STILL has the unlimited data plan (I got the phone just before they killed it last summer)? I have a stock droid incredible 4g (Android 4.0.4) that I simply unlocked the bootloader on and installed/flashed SuperSU from TWRP. I apologize if my terminology is off as I am new to this. I have installed both WiFi Tether and FoxFi and have had no success with either program. I may be configuring something incorrectly or it may not be possible given I'm still on the unlimited data plan. I assumed that rooting my device would somehow allow Wifi Tether to bypass whatever verizon blocks on the unlimited data plans to prevent tethering. I have googled everything I can with regard to this issue and have attempted all the recommended fixes with FoxFi (rename the SSID, reboot the phone, disabled WiFi, etc...). I do not know how to configure Wifi Tether (tried the defaults and a few combinations I found on google) and have found very little to assist further with it. There are multiple device-profiles and setup-methods to choose from in addition to a bunch of other options, and am hoping someone know specifically what I can do or have a combination that works. Any help would be greatly appreciated .
Simplified Questions:
(1) Is it possible to teather on a droid inc 4g with unlimited data?
***These Questions assume '1' above is true***
(2) Can this work in FoxFi, if so, how do I configure it?
(3) Can this work in Wifi Tether, if so, how do I configure it?
(3a) In Wifi Tether, I would need it set up to do a 'hotspot' not an ad-hoc network connection, no clue how to do this...
(3b) In Wifi Tether, which device-profile and setup-method should be used?
(3c) There are a number of options in WiFi Teather, which ones should be selected?
Solved
I continued to search and try settings and figured out what worked:
(1) Phone must be rooted
(2) Download WiFi Teather
(3) In Settings -> Choose HTC Rezound (LTE/CDMA/GSM) as the 'Device-Profile'
(4) Leave the 'Setup-Method' as 'Auto', which is the default
(5) Optional: Use 'WiFi-Encryption' if you'd like
(6) Set the SSID
(7) Check the box for 'Wifi-driver reload'
(8) Ensure 'MSS clamping' is checked (was by default for me)
(9) Ensure 'Routing fix' is checked (was by default for me)
(10) Start Tethering
The above should work...
Simple, if your on a sense based ROM just use open garden https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=og.android.tether
And in settings select either generic ICS or rezound I forget its been a while but I know it works flawlessly
On cm which I am just use the built in tethering very simple
I use WiFi Tether (currently using 3.2-beta2). Works great. Fast, no drops, etc.
While I am running ViperLTE, I see no reason why it won't work with rooted stock.
In fact... I'm using it right now

Which wifi-tether app are you referring to? From which author... As there are many different apps in the store. Thx
I also suggest freezing mobile hotspot and tetheringguard using titanium backup.

I believe the full title is "WiFi Tether for Root Users". For some reason, it seems to appear and disappear from the Google Play Store at random.
The best place to find it is at the code project home here: http://code.google.com/p/android-wifi-tether/

i still don't seem to have gotten past the throttling... i have frozen these apps with not apparent change.
tethering works - i just don't get the same speed results when comparing my phone vs laptop. :dunno: i also note my area doesn't seem to have very fast 4g speeds compared to results i see posted on the internet.

I have found that signal strength/area is everything when it comes to speeds - tethering or otherwise. At work, I have intermittent 4G and my tethering speeds are so-so. I have to carefully put my phone in the right spot to get 4G, and that spot varies depending on the weather...
However, at home my signal and 4G are rock solid. 4G speeds, including tethering, are faster than my WiFi connection.

Thanks - I'm on Viper 2.2.0 and this is what worked for me. Before I updated the ROM a few weeks ago, I was able to use the older settings with the generic ICS profile and without Wifi-driver reload.

I also have the Inc 4G Lte and just loaded Viper LTE 2.2.0
Using the above settings, I still can't get it to work. It runs and my other devices can see it and connect to it but there is no traffic.
Anybody got any ideas.

[Q] Wireless Tethering

Is there a way to get wireless tethering working on VS985 without having to add tethering to your plan (FoxFi or other)? I used it all the time on my Note 2 and have come to depend on it. Unlimited data plan. Thanks.
This link should do it for you.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/lg-g3/general/g3-hotspot-hack-t2812305
you need to be rooted though.
Not working
Edit now working just had to redownload it

It works. You need to change the name of the network each time. Also make sure to enable proper permissions I can confirm it is working.

I was under the impression that FoxFi works on the LG G3 and you don't need root.
Foxfi does not work! The http://forum.xda-developers.com/lg-g3/general/g3-hotspot-hack-t2812305 does. But you need to be rooted which is a easy as a breeze.
I got a "404" error on the prior link. This one works: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2812305
I've got a question out on how to use Tasker to automate having to refill password and/or link name each time you use the apk included with the thread.

Yeah as mentioned by others it does not work. Unfortunately I need my work email on my phone and can't root it so for now I am use USB tethering via PDANet. Hopefully the developer finds a way around it. On the bright side, my laptop keeps the phone charged while I tether to it.

What you could also do is just change the channel. So pretty much just change something about the network everytime. i'd just go with the channel so the ssid just stays the same everytime
