I LOVE certain features of the stock keyboard (ie: the handwriting and the separate number row) but I'm having trouble teaching the keyboard new words. I tried it like it works in swype where you type it out once and then click it in the little suggestion row, and it SEEMS to work...but it actually doesn't.
Example: If I'm typing a text and I type a word it doesn't know and click it in the box, if I use that word again in the same text, or possibly even in another text sent soon afterword, it will suggest the word when I "swype" it. But then if I go to a browser and try to do that word in a search box it didn't actually learn it.
Is there any way to reliably teach this thing new words? The help and tutorials that come with the keyboard on the phone are less than impressive.
So far the handwriting and separate numbers make it worth it to use, but i'm growing tired of typing out melbell every time I do anything.

No no... I had this problem. Until I found the missing setting. They are a bit hidden...
Settings > Language and Input > Samsung keyboard settings (click on the gear to the right of samsung keyboard) > Turn on predictive text if its not on. AND also click on the wording of Predictive Text... That is the hidden part. There is a whole other menu if you click on the wording of predictive text. Then enable personalized data. Bang.

You can capitalize if you Swype up past the top of the keyboard then come back down and continue swiping. Like for "hello" start at the h, Swype upwards, then over to the e. Hard to explain, but let me know if you get it.

That's what I assumed too because that's how Swype works (which is the keyboard I'm used to), but I haven't been able to get that to work on the Samsung keyboard.

Ok Getting tired of this.. I Hate HTC keyboard, but I love Gingerbreads.. However I hate the Fact that when I text someone or type its looks like this :
hello.this.is.a.test to. see what.happens
The Perioid is in the way or the spacebar needs to be bigger I cant decide? Anyone else have this issue?
I Tried using swype but I dont have the Patients for it. Its a great concept just not for me? Any Solutions out there?
Is there anyway to get the OG Droids soft keyboard layout on the Tbolt?
I don't know what's wrong with your keyboard but I'm typing this on gingerbread keyboard and its working fine. I don't have any issues with it. I have also used Swype but for some reason, lately it doesn't seem to figure out what I'm trying to swype so I switched to this keyboard and have been quite happy.

Download the gingerbread keyboard from the market. That's what I finally had to do. I had the same issues. Just the way I use the keyboard i guess.

I'm the same way. The only respite I've found is from using other keyboards from the market. Just look around and try some different ones, and find out which works best for you.
I found that if I make the settings key always hide and move the mic key to the symbols page it makes the spacebar a bit longer and easier to hit w/o touching the period. might be worth a shot for you guys.

Care to share? I'm not seeing it.
Settings > language & keyboard > gb keyboard > voice input
You also might want to try out swiftkey, as I haven't had any issues with it. It is leaps and bounds better than the stock keyboard.
is there a way to change the "done" button to "send" like in the regular froyo keyboard? annoying to have to press the "done" button and select "send" in the next screen.
UPDATE: Noticed this only happens in landscape mode. Regular view shows "send" key and "attachment key". what gives? is this a flaw in the app?

Nothing beats Swiftkey. Most ingenious keyboard around and works as well as advertised. I just don't like that sometimes it lags as it pulls predictions from my history. Maybe because I have so many SMS?
The trick with the mic and settings key (set to always hide) worked! Thanks. I like the GB keyboard for a change of pace.

This. And I hid the voice and settings buttons to make the spacebar bigger. But I am using swiftkey, its better in my opinion. The prediction engine is excellent and saves me from typing at all.
Was just wondering if any body knew there was a swype feature you can turn on with the default touch input keyboard on this phone.
I have been using it and it actually is not that bad.
Can find it under touch input settings turn it on and go to town.

I did not know that. I tried it and it's kind of cool.
Had no idea! This is sweet. I'm going to try it out for a while. Nice find.
yeah you can choose the color of the trace and everything but its so bad it chooses what ever word it wants like if you spell my name Bryan it spells it Brian, it does it with other words it doesnt recognize too.
Swype is better at word prediction because it accesses ur contacts and pulls a persons name with its normal predictions
Bussin Caps from my 3D shooter
That's awesome.. never knew that... THANKS!!!

Swype will remember words you type. If you hit the spacebar after manually typing the word in, it will add the word to its dictionary.
Check out the Nuance (Dragon naturally speaking) keyboard app. It combines AMAZINGLY accurate voice-to-text, swipe-like typing and even free letter drawing if that's your cup of tea. I now do 80% voice-to-text because of that app...
Just got my Galaxy S3 today and the first thing that is driving me nuts is the predictive text and word suggestions.
When I am typing I would like suggestions to appear in the bar but I don't want the phone to automatically change the words I am typing without my clicking on the word in the bar. I had this working on my Gingerbread ROM on my HD2 but I can't seem to get it to do this on the Galaxy S3. What setting am I missing here??

That's not what I am after. Doing that completely disables the suggested words bar. I want the suggested words bar but I don't want it to auto-complete or auto-correct my words as I type as it always gets things wrong. What I want is to suggest words in the bar as I am typing and if I see a word in the bar I want I will tap it. This is how it was on my Gingerbread ROM.

That's a completely idiotic comment. If you don't know then just say so.
This was functionality that existed on Gingerbread ROM default keyboard I had so its not hard to understand that it could well be there on the ICS GS3 ROM also.
Hi
I found the swift key 3 keyboard very good.

Same problem here. If it suggests a word and you hit SPACEBAR, it will append that word. Horrible design.
I switched to Go keyboard for this reason alone.
Thanks guys. I'll give Swift Key 3 a try if its not possible to change the behaviour on the default Samsung one.

If you leave Predictive Text On, but instead go into Predictive Text settings and turn off everything in there, it will show suggestions at the top of the keyboard and not change what your typing

That sort of comment is what makes people not even deserve to have a computer, let alone a phone.
I like predictive text, but I don't like than on my gs3 it replaces what I'm actually typing. Is there any way to change this behavior?
For example, say I'm typing "reason". Until I type "o" it says "areas" in the typing field (hiding "reas"). I want it to show me "reas", but also suggest "areas" in the area above the keyboard (so simply turning off predictive text isn't ideal).
+1
I also find this behavior extremely annoying. It wasn't like that in the GS2.
Just download a new keyboard! One that you like. I personally like Swiftkey 3. Some people say the swipe beta is pretty good too. However I have never used it.
Ics keyboard is free if you want to try, I go with Swiftkey, the extra bucks is wroth it IMO

+1 for android power of being able to pick your keyboard! There are *tons* of great keyboards out there, go check 'em out and find one that meets your needs!
For the record I use swiftkey and my wife likes gokeyboard.
When they keyboard pops up hold the microphone button left of the spacebar until a new menu pops up. From that menu select the setting icon. You can turn off and mess around with the predictions there.
I started using SwiftKey shortly after writing this post. I like it fairly well.

Thanks. Used this for a while but had to go back to Swype. I liked having Google voice input back instead of Dragon but I found the punctuation input to be frustrating. Now only if there was a way to use Google voice input with Swype typing I would be happy. I also like that Swype has some cool features like swiping for cut and paste etc.

Finally Google puts out an official solution. The others seemed to lag to a point no matter what.
If Google would put a comma key somewhere on the main keyboard I'd use it. Until then...

You go into the settings and make it put the mic on the symbols keyboard - bam, the comma is on the main keyboard. I had a Nexus for a long time, I had the same gripe. But just do what I said and your problem is solved.
