Hi,
I'm new here, so forgive me if I've not followed the right process before asking something...
I would like to identify what kind of process is talking with the network.
Actually there's plenty of programs which can help identify how many network data each app use.
Recently I was facing a strange problem, the system reported that I used 150 Mbits on one day but if I sum all the network data usage of the app showed the sum was like 20 Mbits...
I've tested this with three differents Apps :
- the information located under settings > Data Usage (not sure about the translation, as it's in french on my phone)
- Avast Network Counter
- ZDBox network counter
All three apps said that I used more data that what was showed...
So I wonder if there's a kind of low level app that can report these network usage (I'm rooted) ?
My phone is a Galaxy SIII under stock Android 4.1.1 (rooted/flashed)
thanks !

Hi hope someone can help.
I've bought an Xperian X10 mini for my daughter. She loves it. All her friends love it. The iPhone owners want one! (Big) but.....
She is not a heavy user, and so put her on a PAYG contract. However it is running out of credit very quickly, and when I checked the usage it is nothing she is doing, but some background app that is regularly (hourly) connecting with GPRS and doing... well something, but I have no idea what :-S The info on the usage (from Orange) is (e.g.)
date & time event type dialled number/description duration/vol(Kb) cost (?)
22/05/11 19:22 GPRS ap-prepaidsessio 38.0 0.00
with the same entry every hour:22
We have tried disabling as many sync type options / apps as we can find (e.g. Timescape) but it is still happening, and is driving me up the wall.
The reason I am even more annoyed is that most of the time it is at home, and connected (apparently successfully) to our wifi, so why the hell is it using GPRS anyway when there is an active wifi conection?! :-S
I have tried everything I can think of, and short of turning it off there seems little I can do. Can anyone help please??
- Which app is doing this?
- How do I configure it to either
i) use Wifi (preferred - would rather not disable functionality if possible) or
ii) stop auto syncing every hour?
Any help very gratefully received!
Thanks in advance
T
There are a couple of apps out there that can monitor data usage per app. But so far, all those that I found require Froyo (2.2) and above. I'm guessing your using the stock SE ROM so that's 2.1.
But there is an alternative.
Dial *#*#4636#*#*
Click Usage Statistics
Click Battery history
Click the Other usage dropdown
Click network usage
That should show you which apps are using your network connection. But both wifi and 3g; at least it gives you an idea.
As to how to prevent use, you could go to each app and customize syncing options if at all possible. If you just want to block an app from using the network totally, I suggest LBE Privacy Guard, free on the market.

They have a thread here on XDA: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1091065
EDIT: BTW, the phone shouldn't be using GPRS when wifi is available. That's weird. First time I've heard of that happening.
Many thanks for the info - really useful - will check the links you've given.
On the wifi (and yes it is weird - and annoying!) could it be "connected" but without a "proper" connection? Is there some way I can check, e.g. switch off GPRS and see if can see www?
Just tried what you suggested (disconnected the internet from my wifi router, but router still on), and my X10MP didn't even attempt to connect to GPRS despite using apps which use data. The apps returned errors.
Maybe your X10M fails to connect to the wifi? I actually have no idea what's going on.
you and me both buddy!
thanks for trying tho!
I'll delete the connection anyway and try set it up again....
"no batterry usage data available"
do I need to enable something to collect it?

I didn't need to enable anything to use that. Sorry, don't know how else to help.
well it carried on despite various fiddling. so I did a factory reset.... no accounts set up no sync etc - factory reset - and it's still happening??!! so something SE/Android is doing it, but I still have no idea what? Surely I'm not the only person with this issue??!! :S :S :S

very simple fix, go to Settings > Wireless & Networks > Mobile Networks > uncheck Data enabled.
that way mobile data (gprs,edge,3g) is turned off and your problem is solved. If you're using stock SE software, theres a Data Traffic widget that lets you toggle the Data Enabled setting on and off easily.
Sync is not the only thing using data traffic, background apps can too, as well as some of the apps she might be using. ( some apps have adverts )
Thanks. Had also been nosing on SE site, and am obviously not the only person with this problem. I unchecked the box a few hours ago, am hoping that that cures it. I've also found anotehr PAYG plan with the same provider that has unlimited internet, so may switch to that. So one way or another will be resolved.
However I am still left annoyed. This ****** device is supposed to be under MY contorl not the other way round! Not knowing what is doing this, or (and because of this) not being able to stop it is ****** annoying! As is the fact it (whatever "it" or "they" are) is using GPRS when there is an open wifi connection!!
Ho hum - progress eh...
Well turning off the Data seems to have done the trick thanks. NOt really satisfactory not knowing what is doing it, but there we go. Thanks for all the help all
If shes not using the data at all, you can try to delete all access points - GPRS,WAP, etc. even MMS...with no APN, no connection, no access to net, no credit loss...Just go to settings-wireless networks-mobile networks-access point names-click on any of them-press menu button and choose delete...Im working for the operator so I solve this kind of problems every day :-D It is easy if you dont want to use net in mobile at all but still I think you should flash it with SEUS because your problem is weird.
That's the thing - she does use data. so want it to be enabled. but the vast majority of the time is at home with a perfectly good wifi connection, so why won't it use that?!
Anyway am swapping to a PAYG tarriff promising "free" internet, so will see how that goes.
thanks t
Hi,
On friday I installed this rom,i did all wipes etc . All was OK and now it works fine ... but i have a question.
On Settings / Data Network Usage , i have a big data statistic.
If you can see on attached Image it says i have downloaded 1GB in 3 days!
800MB Using Google Play .. (i haven´t done any App Update using my 3G network)
It says i have 500MB using Twitter!! (I am not a Twitter addict!)
304MB using Facebook ..
Could this be a bug on data network counter? I check my data traffic on my 3G carrier webpage and "aparently" i haven´t download 1GB of traffic.
Thanks
I'd say after you made all the necessary wipes , you've signed in to your google account which restored automatically all of your apps from the play store and that's the source.
cheers.

yes. as already mentioned, some or almost all custom roms download apps from your play account automatically after your first login. facebook and twitter might be syncing everything all the time. so you better restrict data usage. good luck.
First of all thanks sriram231092 and eytan123 for your answers.
As i said I didn´t do any update over 3G or any restore Backup over 3G ... All backup restored were made over Wifi
When i flashed the rom and i logon for the first time ... i was connected to a wifi just to download all my apps etc etc
I have flashed different roms other times and never seen this and thats the reason that i am surprised with this issue.
Thanks a lot.

well that even shows data through wifi i think! anyhow when you click on the app like seen in the image , you will get an option to restrict background data. once you check it, you may observe the difference. good luck :good:
I concur^
just a minor addition you may choose whether to show WIFI usage with the menu button.
Check on your carriers website and look at what your 3g usage is if it says you havent used as much as what the phone does then its most likely a bug. And if it does say youve used all that data then it will be what the guys above are saying
Hi Ryanscobberwash
as i write on the first post .. i checked this option (confirm on carriew webpage my data Traffic) and "aparently" is OK .. i haven´t download this traffic
I would like to ask this on Supernexus 2.0 I9300 post .. but i can´t because i have only 2 post written :'(
Thanks!

I have the same issue on a Galaxy S2. I'm pretty sure it's a display bug. I vaguely remember reading this was fixed in some other mod, perhaps CM.

Hi, some months ago, I put Cyanogenmod 10.1 on my Galaxy Ace. It wasn´t very fast, but caused no problems and was usable. This morning, I woke up only to find out that my phone used lots of data overnight. I got a text from my carrier saying I'm 2,5 gigs = 100 euro's past my limit. The Android data usage menu states that the Google Play store used 2.23 GB, but auto updating via mobile network is disabled and I only have 7 apps installed.
I know that I can't undo the usage, but I'd like to know what may have caused this excessive data usage.

Does anyone know a reasonable explanation for this?

Yoyr apps might have additional data that needs to be downloaded. Plus google play is a fickle app. It can disobey your commands. I would advise you to turn off your data when not using it. It'll save you battery

Has anyone else had an issue with SuperNexus 2.0 not calculation mobile data usage correctly. I set up the same limits that I have had in the past and within a day or two, I had supposedly hit my limits. I requested a usage balance from the phone company and I am not where near the limits calculated on the phone.

I experienced this issue as well, but from more ROMS than supernexus. I gave up on trying to use the firmware to keep up, and from time to time I simply check with at&t by using the ussd code below, taken from >>this at&t website<<
Check or estimate data usage:
You can check your data usage online, on your handset, or by dialing *3282# (*DATA#). We will send you a free text message with your data usage.
Thanks for the info...the *3282# method is the one that I used to verify that the data usage calculation was incorrect.
Hello.
So i bought the iqoo 7 Legend Chinese version last April and since the beginning im facing some Issues...
I thought that with a OTA update wiil become normal, but no.
So the problem is, even if the phone have mobile data on, with the 4g or 4g+ signal, he loses connections, speed transfer is like 100 kbs... He changes from 4g+ to 4g on a second, and the data transfer stucks... Its strange..
And the other thing, the notifications... I dont receive wattsapp, email, other apps notifications... Anyone have the same issue? If someone could help i apreciate... Thanks.
Are you using the phone in a country other than china, if yes then probably it is because of a different baseband/radio version. You need the particular country software version on your device.
The signal depends on compatibility of the phone, but notifications can be turned on in the settings of every app.
If you still have problems after turning on and giving priorities to the norifications, you could use adb (or adb appcontrol) to uninstall an app Called PEM (is the vivo battery management, and is very aggressive with notifications), but it will increase battery consumption.
