List of Cool voice commands and other cool tricks? - Verizon Samsung Galaxy Note II

Just got back from the store, and have been using this for about 12 hours now. After seeing the basic cool things this thing can do, I was hoping to find a list of all the nifty voice commands you can get it to do, on top of any other cool features this thing has. I will be honest, I have not seen a device in a looong time that has features like this one does, I really hope this will be a "2 year phone".

Maybe a year. Im a 3-4 month phone guy so a year would be a stretch lol

New 3D Shell for Android (Looks Cool)

A friend of mine sent me this link for a new 3D shell that's in development. Check it out, it looks pretty cool.

Looks nice! But I hope they have themes for it, a bit too childish/iOSish for me.
Cartoonish but very cool and well made just take away the IOS app look and cartoon like widgets and it would be BADASS.

There's another thread on this. Touted right though, it has a Fisher price, "my first launcher" look to it. It will likely end up like spb, neat concept, but lacking functionality and customization

Spd was the biggest waste of money and probably my most hated app.....including the free ones. In my opinion of course.

still have mobile shell 3d on my thunderbolt. Works really well. Not as customizable as something like adw, but works well and has some nice widgets.

Well I'm glad someone got their $15 worth. For me it consistently froze and since I use my phone for work, it wasn't an option for me to cripple my phone.

hmmm, had it give me the "shell didn't open properly, do you want to retry" error maybe 4-5 times total. Other times it had to reload because android would close it for memory (when playing games). Had it on winmo, main reason I got if for android (and the big discount).

I got it because of all the great winmo reviews. Just didn't live up to what I needed. Trust me, I wish it did work for me. I even tried three different times over the 8 months I had my TBolt.

That looks really cool but I bet that guy has no idea what folder he put the gmail app in after all that.
Don't mean to necrobump but I figured some of you would like to know that a general release date has been announced. It will be released sometime this month through the Market. Really looking forward to this, hope it works well.
Cool idea to show off to people but it would get old fast

It looks like they are supposed to have their first release on the market sometime this month.
This was finally released, though I don't think I'll be getting it til they update, it's nice, but doesn't have al the features the videos show off right now. Also the main site is down...

Are we better or worse?

For the past week or so I've asking myself if my Android is better or worse than my friend's iPhone with respect to hardware, aesthetics and user-freindly-ness. There are more than a few ways to tackle this question as different features appeal to different people, which is why I present this question to the whole of xda (or just the X2 forum lol) : Which one do you think is better and why?
A couple things: 1.) Im relatively new here and I dont know how often this question is askedso I'll understand if this question starts a riot and is taken down and 2.) I know there will be some bias, but I feel as this forum in particular will be honest in answering my question.
Many to thanks to anyone that happens to read this and many more to anyone that bothers responding!
Android, cause I can do whatever I want, whenever I want. The thought of clouds and cloud connect must really suck not being able to see our hear when your in a building, elevator, tunnel out remote location. Plus only $6.99 a month for insurance, iPhone is $10.99 and I prefer a one year warranty over Apple 90 day warranty.
Yes Apple is simple, simple is as simple does. Simple people like simple things!
I like to unleash, and have the option too change whatever.

So Im assuming iPhone's cannot run different ROMs in the way Androids can? Forgive me if I sound clueless; I have ~20 minutes of experience with Apple's phones.

Here's the thing. Iphone must jailbreak to do many of the things that android can do out if the box.
But! Iphone does one thing out of the box that android typically has to root to do: run buttery smooth, all the time. Everything Iphone does, it does better stock for stock.
But I cannot own an Iphone for one reason, if no other: the ui is SO boring it puts me to sleep. Android is much more entertaining just swiping home screens and widgets and notification panels, etc.
Just my two cents...

I guess it boils down to what you want out of a smrtphone. If you don't care about physical keyboards, interesting ui's, screen size, you just want it to WORK, then I think you're better served by an Iphone. Not me.

If they are better you wouldn't see us here.
Sent from my DROID X2 using xda premium
Okay, the iPhone vs. Android debate is just silly.
It all boils down to what you like.
If you don't care about customization, don't want to worry about having to set things up, want to ensure that your phone works the same as everyone else, then the iPhone is the phone to get. You know that your iPhone 4s will be the same as everyone else who has an iPhone 4s. You all will run the same OS version and get the same update at the same time. No issues with "Hey how come you have ICS and I still have Gingerbread?" No issues with waiting for your phone manufacturer to release a certain version of the OS (like we have with all the different phone manufacturers and carriers for Android).
But, if you want to customize, you want to change the UI, you want flexibility, don't mind researching which phones might best fit you, understand what the different Android OS versions are, etc, then the Android is your way.
It all depends on how much control you want over your phone. Even with Android, though, carriers make it difficult at times to allow you to have that full control. That is the current issue with the X2 and many other Motorola phones - no unlocked bootloader which makes it more difficult to upgrade the phone to the latest Android OS. But, if you have developer support, then chances are, you'll see some great things come. Fortunately, with the X2, we have some great devs out there - Nitro, Dragonzkiller, Aceoyame - that are creating some excellent custom ROMs for the X2.
But, with Android, you have to keep up with what is out there IF you want to keep customizing. You could still get an Android, not root it and not customize it and you might be fine, but you really need to investigate which phones work the best out of the box. The X2 doesn't. Too much BLUR crap in it, hence that's why we like to put on custom ROMs that remove that BLUR which in turn, helps the performance of the phone.
Okay, that was long, but it pretty much sums up that it all boils down to each persons personal preference. Just because I like Android over iOs doesn't mean it's right for the next person. You just have to investigate it and choose the one that best fits you. If you like what you chose, then it was the right choice for you. I just can't stand when people try to just say things like "Android is the best. iOs sucks" without backing it up with any facts other than personal opinion. That is NOT fair to the next person looking for a phone.
I had iphone for 5 years, starting with the first one and then the 3g and then the 4! I always jailbreaked it and it was a pain to use itunes! I loved it b4 but now with my gNote i can never consider byuin an iphone again! Too simple for me! This comes down to what u want to do with the phone, my parents use iphone cause its simple, but for somebody who wants to modify his phone, iphone is not the phone for those people! Android is developing much faster than iphone, and for me, that somethin i appreciate alot!

iPhones are for the people who don't understand nor want to understand the technology they are holding in their hands, they just want to go as far as jail breaking their phone. Android users are the ones that tend to be more into the technology in their phones. But then there are those iPhone users who think they know technology, yet they have a hard time understanding the difference between hard drive and SD card. So I think it boils down to the person, to their interest and how much time they want to spend on their phone besides texting and playing angry birds haha
Don't hate me, I just see a lot of people with iPhones thinking they know more about this stuff while spitting out words at random like "my CPU is better than yours!" Yet they have no idea what a CPU is.

Many thanks to everyone for the great insight. So the conclusion I draw from this thread and other deabates on the topic is that: iPhone: user freindly (not to say the Droid isn't) and simple thus making it very very appealing to the masses. It also is very limited when it comes to making modifications (which to me is quite a downfall to us but enables a Droid user to ultimately push past the iPhone user).
The Droid: Huge selection of phones. Can be modified to all hell assuming your model is fairly unlocked and if I might add, the only option for a man with big hands. Our major downfall is that some phones fall behind in development whereas the iPhone os is functionally consistent across most models.
So sorry if that was long but I really enjoy getting as much info as possible on a certain subject and presenting it to those better than me to make sure its accurate is important soooo please correct me if anything I said was wrong!!!

Hell
I chose the x2 OVER the I phone based on performance and customization differences IN STORE, which means I felt the x2(or any Droid in store) offered more for me to do/play with right out the box.
That's the basic difference, whether you root or jailbreak or not the DROID DOES...plain and simple
Widgets widgets widgets
many different launchers you can custom fit to your liking
Many more options
AND THEN YOU ROOT
And wow its a whole new world, get ready
Just my thoughts
Not to mention this awesome community, for the most part....
Just for the sake of rebellion I refuse to join the technologically and possibly mentally inferior software users...(iPhone) I do more than use software, I mod. And experiment

That's basically it. For the iPods, you can change wallpaper and stuff and font and transitions and stuff. Basically what they have when they jailbreak, is what we have out of the box with android. But when we root, we have even more haha

I think I have a problem waiting for this phone...

I dont know what it is but for some reason I just REALLY want this phone right now. I have to admit when the gs3 was first announced I thought it was the ugliest thing out there. Lately its been growing on me and I just want it very badly right now. I probably seen every unboxing/review video of it in youtube and I constantly check for updates on what the situation on this phone is. What makes matters worst is that i pre ordered this phone on Verizon so i have to wait longer then everyone else to get it. Im just hoping for a stroke of luck that some how The verizon model gets shipped out before the 9th. Anyways am I the only one like this?
i think the hype for this phone has been just so much a lot of people are feeling the same way...
im actually about to return my HTC Evo 4G LTE (which is an AWESOME phone), for putting in my pre-order for the sgs3
the removable, larger batter and the 2 GBs of RAM really have me pumped, plus a lot of cool extra features, gesture controls, etc make this a super exciting phone...

lol noooo you're not the only one. I've watched almost every video on youtube.. over and over and over again and finally someone shared a video of the Canadian version which is the same as the U.S. one which I will be getting on June 21st from tmobile I am too too excited! imma have to pay 600 somethin for it.. grrrr
hahaha same, im stalking this phone like a bieber fan.
Yea you're alone. I'm coming from an Evo 4G, and there have been some decent replacements, like the nexus, galaxy S II, but I've been stalking this phone since it was first annouced back before march. I'm with Sprint, so I'll have mine next week. You can live vicariously through us.
Waiting on a pre-order is worse than simply waiting for release in my opinion, since the money is already gone from my account, but no phone in hand. Reading about how much the international people are enjoying theirs already makes it even harder.
You are not alone. I am also very excited for the S3!!! Then again I have an X2 so really any phone is looking good to me right about now lol!
I'm pretty blown away by the specs of the S3 and if I don't have to pay full price for it, I'll probably get it. Does anyone know if I would still have to pay full retail price for the S3 if I upgrade my contract before the 28th and lock in another 2 years unlimited data?? On Verizion, obviously...

I am glad I am not the only one who feels this way. I think Samsung should start doing their press release events the day before release because making us wait this long is simply unfair. I am secretly hoping that my carrier will call me today and say 'we got a stack of phones in early, would you like to pick yours up early?' LOL. Seriously, I know once I have the phone a while the novelty will wear off a bit but I want it now. And its not like my SGS2 is not a good enough phone or won't hold me over for another year. Do we need help or are just simply victims of marketing?? haha
And now it looks like the Canadian release date has been increased another week to the 27th.
I can't wait either cuz I'm not rooting this evolte since its temp so I want my permanent gs3 yeah buddy.
I thought I was the only one... I thought this was the ugliest phone, but it some how has grown on me, a lot, like I haven't been this bad since the first iPhone came out (everyone was going crazy about it)... and the fact that I haven't seen any U.S variants is driving me nuts...
Lol same here, I almost bought the international version a few days ago to use on AT&T. *Patient running on low*
Im watchin youtube videos of the s3 on my evo lte drooling over the s3 lol

Currently waiting for my S3 from Verizon also and going crazy but over the last couple days it seems that I'm phasing it out more and more. I was going crazy at first and now I'm just like whatever when it comes it comes especially with no solid release date, I've heard so many 6/28, 7/9, 7/10 all I know is that its pre ordered and I'll be in the first batch of shipments whenever it happens.
This is not just a phone - Galaxy Nexus

Just a phone dude. And like all android phones that get rooted, you never find it perfect because you keep flashing and flashing until some other phone comes out and you feel the need tio get rid of the one you have.

Why I Love Android

Hello all. Over the past 4 years I've enjoyed reading the countless threads from people sharing their love of android, so I thought I would share my own story.
I've never understood the appeal of the iPhone. Even when it first arrived it didn't make me want to run out and slap $600 down to have it. So I bounced back and forth between the Palm Treo and different BlackBerries.
Then the Droid X was released. I fell in love with the big screen.....well big for 2010.....and was quickly introduced to the mysteries of rooting, ROMs, and themes. It was like a whole new world was revealed and I knew I'd found the phone system I was waiting for.
I moved from the Droid X to the X2 to the Galaxy Nexus. I loved the Nexus so much I wasn't interested in trying the Galaxy Note or any other phone. I also wasn't very daring when it came to ROMs. I found one that I liked and stuck with it. My DX had Eclipse, my DX2 had Cyangen, and my GNex had Sourcery which I absolutely loved. That ROM really showed me the level of customization I could reach with a device, and the ability to flash different themes and mods within Sourcery. That's why I stuck with my Nexus, I had it looking and feeling perfect.
I don't listen much to reviews or comments about things; I have to actually see and touch it for myself. When I finally saw the Note 2 in February 2013 and held it in my hand, I quickly upgraded. And now I anxiously await the Note 3.
I LOVE MY NOTE 2!!
I finally gathered the courage and soon learned the joy....and frustration....in flashing different ROMs. I would even say I became addicted to ROM hopping and flashed 4-6 ROMs a week. There are so many excellent ROMs available I just couldn't decide on one. It took me a few months but I slowed down and setup my current routine.
I'd flash a ROM and get it setup with theme, wallpaper, dock icons, widgets, and app folders. I'd use it for a few days until I was happy with the setup, then I'd Nandroid, save it to my desktop, and move on to the next ROM. Now, I have over 20 setups to choose from, and every 2-5 days I'll flash a Nandroid and fall in love with my Note 2 over and over again. I'd update the ROM to the latest version if needed, and change the setup if I was feeling the need.
Some may say this method is a waste of time, and maybe it is. But that's what keeps me loving this phone. People always talk about getting bored with the phone and needing to have the latest and greatest device. I'm not one of those people. I'm a simple old man that still smiles every time I look at my home screen. That's why I appreciate the developers of ROMs and themes, they keep my phone looking and feeling fresh and new. I hope one day to begin showing my thanx in a more tangible manner because I believe ALL developers need our support for the incredible work they do.
I'm currently running Jellybean 21, DarkNote theme, and a special hometown wallpaper and dock icons. Here's a pic of my homescreen; I'll post screens and info of my other setups as well.
Thanx for allowing me to share my story with you.

Google gave us what Microsoft did not, a choice! Kids and adults alike are now using Android in ways M$ only could dream about. Many of us here and other forums have the ability to enjoy a unified yet custom experience that has lead to companies being established etc... If it was not for android I would not be saving tons of energy running my mk808s instead of a PC..... The world has benefited from this platform indefinitely.
My only issue with the note 2 is the bluetooth quality no matter what rom I use, hopefully this gets fixed in 4.3. Thanks for the story!

S4 vs The One: My Journey

Hello All,
Wanted to post about the process I went through that eventually landed me on The One. I read everything I could for the last three months about the two phones and wound up more confused then decided on which to upgrade to. I finally decided that I need to S**t or get off the pot, so I went with the S4 because:
1) I read more positive reviews about it's camera then the One's, and for me the smartphone is a Camera that I can make calls on, not the other way around.
2) I had never owned a Samsung phone and I wanted to check it out.
3) I was worried about the lack of updates from HTC when I had the Rezound. Though I am a member of Elevate, updates have been my biggest gripe with HTC and I didn't want to get stuck with another unsupported phone.
4) lack of SD card and removable battery on the One. Not deal breakers, but factors.
So, my wife, son and I got out hiking on Saturday and I took about 60 shots on the S4. They looked great on the phone, but TERRIBLE on the PC. I had hiked in the same park last year about the same time with my son and had taken a lot of the same shots on my Rezound so I found those and compared them...The Rezound shots were much better in many instances. So I decided to take the Rezound and S4 and make the settings the same. I then took about 35 comparison shots. Almost half the time, the Rezound shots were better. That really irritated me so I searched the web for comparison images (S4 & the One) and most of the time they were so close it didn't matter.
I had bought the One through Verizon's Edge program. I know it's not the smartest thing I ever did, but I did it and I'm cool with it. They exchanged the S4 for the One and I feel pretty good about it. If I want I can move up in a year to whatever is the hottest thing at that point. I lost my unlimited, but on my phone only and they gave me 6 gigs for the same cost of my unlimited. I've never gone over six gigs before, and I can tweak my usage a little so I never have to worry about that. Besides, my wife still has her unlimited and I can switch with her if I really miss it.
As soon as I made a call with the One, I knew it was the right choice. I'm glad I tried the S4 but I really didn't like it. It just didn't measure up in so many ways. TouchWiz is so cartoonish, I felt like I should be sitting at the kids table! The screen was awesome! But so is the One's, so I don't feel like I'm missing out on anything there.
I figured I would share the Experience here in the Rezound forum because it played such a big part in my deciding the S4 wasn't for me!
Peace People!
thanks for your take on the two phones. I am considering the S4 above the One right now coming from a Rezound currently. I would like to know more about pros/cons of both and decide then. Hearing about the picture quality of the S4 might be problematic, but I'd have to see other cases of the same problem to be convinced myself. Have you compared your S4 photos with those of others who have an S4 to see if they have the same problem?
When I was at the Verizon store they had a one and a s4 next to each other so it was easy to compare. I took photos on both and the one looked crisper and clearer. I don't know if its because I am use to sense but it felt smoother than touchwiz. Plus I like the feel of the one in my hand. I missed how the original moto droid felt in my hand from its all metal body. The s4 just didn't wow me and disappointed me in others. I am sure its a good phone but not for me. If you think HTC is weak in updates for their phone Samsung is far worse. Droid charge got like a few updates and that's it. Where as the thunderbolt went from froyo to GB to ICS. Sure it took awhile to get to ICS but at least it did get it. Sammy seems to just drop all support and just build a new phone knowing people will do the iphone effect of selling their old device for the new one.

Yeah, I love the way it feels too! I really didn't want to buy the S4 based on the in store comparison, but I was trusting reviews because I shoot a lot of nature and I couldn't simulate that in store. After using the One for a week, it is every bit as good as the S4 Camera wise and blows it away in almost every other respect... So glad I switched!

If you're into shooting nature or anything that moves really, play with Zoe on your one, you'll probably end up loving it.

I've dabbled some with it...Need to do more...Fun feature, especially for my son!
Thanks for the review, there's one thing holding up getting the One for me though, no unlockable bootloader.

Read around the Verizon HTC one forum, you will see someone found a way to S-Off. Better than bootloader unlock.

I have, it requires a java card. It's either shell out the money for one or pay/beg/get a favor from someone who has one.
I decided that I love the phone even if it is never rooted, but I trust it will be... These guys are good!

I'm actually probably going with the S3 or S4. HTC One seems to be harder to find deals for with my credit. S3's are only $100 now, so this college student may snap at that.

And my One is now S-off! So glad I went this way... But the truth is that I am still thrilled with the stock experience. I have roms waiting to be flashed, but I just don't want to!

The simplest answer is that it works so well...It's lightning quick already, so I don't need mods to eliminate lag. Everything does what is supposed to.
But the truth about flashing other Roms is that there is almost always some buggy element. I have only run a handful in three years that didn't. I rooted both my Incredible and Rezound because there were features out there that I couldn't get on those phones.I have everything I could want on the Stock One.
If I had a Nexus device, I would enjoy that experience, but I also would miss the TV app in Sense 5 and believe it or not, I am having a blast with Zoe and some of the other features of the Sense 5 Camera. It would require too many trade offs to go to Stock Android.
Having said that, I am a flashaholic, and I have flashed one Rom since the previous post. Frankly, battery wasn't as good, and the 4g signal wasn't consistent. And that was a Rom that was very close to Stock. I know I could reflash and do other things that might fix it, or I could just go back to Stock, which I did... I'll flash other Roms, my curiosity is too strong not to, but it's great to know that Stock is so rock solid to come back to!
How's the camera compared to rezound? Also how is the scrolling lag compared to the iPhone?

Lag? I know naught of you speak? Seriously, I don't have an iPhone so I can't compare it, but this thing blows my old Rezound out of the water, and it is every bit as fast as the S4 was.
As for the Camera, I love it. It does some things better then the Rezound (low light) and I have been able to crop with no problems. There's a learning curve but it didn't take long. I even have that purplish tint at times, but changing the iso usually makes it go away...
