[Q] Some questions - Sony Ericsson XPERIA X10 Mini

1) Knowing what ROM is the best is kind of subjective, so it's a silly question to ask without clarification. Perhaps if one gives some perspective, that might help?
I used the stock ROM until the built-in browser refused to work in https, and some of the things just bugged me in that version. Some extra bulk in that ROM. That for one, and the fact one couldn't tether easily for fre with it aswell. So, I am now running miniCM7. It's miles and miles better than the 2.1 or whatever it was that was the last stock android. Still, it seems kind of bulky for my taste at times. All these silly (built-in)apps I don't really even want. With this in mind, what ROM would you recommend for someone who:
-wants a functional internet/phone/camera/best performance
-wants the lightest OS possible that can do this
If it's ugly, I don't care. If it doesn't have a sound recorder or some car app, I don't care.
I have to add though, that I really love CM7. The only times it fails me is when there's some serious stress regarding the phone use. If there's a way to modify CM7 (and it's legal to do so), that would help too if you can help me out by pointing towards the instructions
2)This is a bit out there I guess, but is it possible to actually upgrade x10 minipro hardware? I guess the phone is getting too old and I really love everything else about it.

[Q] Basebands, what do they do and why do they matter?

Yes, the title sounds like a seminar, but I really wanted to understand a bit more about what makes a device (specifically SE's X10) work and why different ROMs are tied to different basebands.
I successfully flashed the latest baseband; 2.1.55 through the Roger's leaked ROM. On top of that, I flashed FreeX10b4 into my devices about a month ago. So far the device works without a hitch. I'm really happy and have tweaked and personalized the phone in different ways. Overall I'm happy with what the hardware allows once you remove the general bloatware from the stock ROM (I'm looking at you Timescape and Mediascape).
I'm considering trying out 2.3.3 on my x10 and see how it behaves. Mostly, I want to see improved performance and how, in general terms, Gingerbread is better than Froyo. For me, this means installing a fully functional, stable ROM.
I use:
the stock Contacts apps for dialing, call history, favorites,
Dolphin HD to browse,
Touchdown 2.0 for Emails,
Tweetdeck for social,
Google's Listen for Podcast
Google's Reader for RSS
Waze for maps
I pretty much use most of the phone's functionality, leaving out --specifically--the camera; which is why I'm so comfortable with FreeX10b4.
I wanted to try out Cyanogen CM7.0 RC1 v007, but I feel it's too early into development. Is this true, or am I just reading too much into the "what's working / what isn't" list?
tl;dr
Why are some ROMs dependant on specific basebands, like Cyanogen CM7.0 RC1 v007 appears to be?
What determines or what needs to be tweaked in order to make ROMs oblivious to the baseband you have installed?
sorry for the long post, I'm very curious and just starting out.
Baseband or radio are the same (as far as i know)
"The Radio is the Firmware that works between the Operating System and the Cellular Hardware. It handles the Sound, Camera, GPS, Phone Calls, etc. The Radio must be compatable with the ROM's Operating System or you may experience problems with your sound and camera."
As far as the 2.3.3 you want to try. I did try it, and I'm sorry to say that it messed up my phone. It kept having random reboots after using certain apps (facebook, gmail, browser, etc...).. which i by now realize are all 'internet apps'.
After a day of using it, it wouldn't boot at all anymore. Just stuck at the white sony erricson. (Wouldn't even load xrecovery). Had to flash the stock SE firmware to get it back up running.
I am using the [Cyanogen6.1.3]gingerbread theme[v01] (2.2.1) now
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=947613
These sudden shift of 3 ROMS gave me a little insight in their speed.
The stock one is just horribly slow, even after i removed all the nonsense.
The CM7.0 was incredibly fast and smooth, too bad it kept crashing (for me).
The CM6.1.3 is stable (no FC or any other problems for an active day of trying all kind of stuff, and its fast and smooth as well, just less options (CM wise).
Thanks for the detailed explanation. It really helped.
Would it be safe to say that "baseband" is another way to say kernel?
I don't want turn this thread into a tutorial, God knows there's many laying around; it's just that I feel that there's so much terminology to learn...
Anyway, I'll stick with FreeX10 for a bit until I read more about CM.
Thanks again,
Xperia x10i
FreeX10b4|BB:2.1.55|K:2.6.29
You would say its safe to say, because i just explained that baseband/radio controls the hardware and communicates with the software.. but its not quite that.
a kernel is the core piece of software that runs an os, its responsible for many things including data processing at a h/w level, memory, cpu and power management. the radio/baseband, controls not just the radio stack (network.bluetooth, wifi, gps) but it also works like a massive driver pack for the device.... now a kernel is not that important, if you flash a bad or wrong kernel its easy to recover, the radio tho, is one of the deepest levels of software on your device, flashing a bad or wrong radio will brick your device.
On the ROM suggestion, CM is really an improvement, and the one i use is very safe.
Let me excuse myself to Hobbes first as I hope im not trashing this thread, I just feel my question is a little associated with it, and dont wanna start a whole new thread:
As Pierre was saying, the basband is basically the "drivers" for all of the hardware a phone has, my question is this then....has anyone developed a way to increase the stock sound level on the X10?? This phone for me has been the best in all aspects as I use it for everything it does: camera, music player, web browsing, video capture, portable game piece, etc....
I ask this question because I use to have a Samsung Impression, and i found a website of a guy that has hact it at the time down to the "kernal" if you will. What do I mean? He had a way where you can go into what would be the equivalent of the "dos" part of the phone, where you can change the values of the decibel levels for each volume, which in the case of the Impression, it had seven preset volume settings. I believe the X10 has like 10 or 12, wateva, doesn't matter. point is, can we change these levels? Cause this is my ONLY gripe about the phone. It really isn't as loud as others. I came from a Blackberry Bold 9000 to the x10, and that phone is much louder in the aspect of the ringtome and alarm sound volume...hope someone can give me a good answer to this one.......
Does the custom rom have to have the same baseband as your existing rom,or i can install any rom i choose, sorry noob at this.
What? The baseband is not the drivers at all....
You guys have NO idea what you're talking about.
The baseband and kernel are not even close to the same either.
The baseband controls the frequency of the radio in your device.
this is kernel or even hardware related (as far as i know), and we can't modify the kernel without cracking the bootloader. (be my guest and work on that )
and mm, i find it weird that ppl say that the x10 aint so loud.. it sometimes scares the hell out of me when i get a txt. And i got a hearing problem

sure, i know the term baseband, ive studied as well and it was my first thought, to what they mean with 'baseband' here.
but, im pretty sure the terminology is a little different when it comes to firmware/roms in combination with baseband. Little over 12mb packed sounds a bit much to just be a little code to control a radiofreq, don't you think?

In the CM settings there is an option to increase the stock volume of alarm, notifications and ring tones. Try using that..

No, what he posted is EXACTLY what the baseband is... The width of the range of theoretical frequencies your phone can operate on.
The kernel is like dos on a pc, the backbone of the computer/os... It is the deeper level that to some degree controls the os. So when we change os, but still use same kernel this is where problems arise.

Mhm, like i said, i know the term baseband. and kernel.. but I was confused when i read that a ROM is so baseband dependant on wether it works or not.
and if baseband is just the width of range of the theoretical frequencies, why does it take 12mb to flash sounds like there is more to it

Well think whatever you want...
I'm an electrical engineer and I KNOW what it is.
It would be a decent size as it would have to edit various things in your phone in order for the frequencies to work as well..

I understand, I studied information technology, and as I said. I'm familiar with the term Baseband. And you are right about its definition.. but when it comes to 'baseband version' implemented in a smartphone, it seems like there is just more to it. I would like to see a dev's opinion on this one

[Q] Need advice

Hello,
a friend of mine just got an Xperia X10, and since she doesn't understand a thing abou technology or smartphones, she asked me to help her with it. I was wondering which ROM I should flash. She doesn't need something fast but buggy nor complicated, she needs something simple (I know, she needs an Iphone) and she doesn't need something that needs to be updated. So I was wondering, should she stick with the stock ROM or is there on I can flash for her? (Of course I'd prefer if she had Gingerbread but if it's too buggy, the stock ROM it will be). I'm asking for advice because I own an HD2 so I don't have a clue about X10 roms!
Thank you
Hello all,
I have a quite similar question.. i didnt flash my phone for the last 2,5 months since i use a quite stable rom now (only barcode scanner and video recording dont work).
I still use a stock kernel.
Now my question is, what rom is recommended at this moment that is:
1. stable (no rebooting etc)
2. can use a custom kernel (i like to have the 32fps cap removed)
3. is froyo or higher (i need adobe flash for my football stream watching)
4. has working wifi, bluetooth, gps, 3g, proximity sensor
there are so many rom varieties, that i dont know what to flash.
(in dutch we say: door de bomen het bos niet meer zien )
I think me and the above poster are looking for the same awnser (sorry for highjacking the thead buddy )
greets!!
Use freex10 beta 4 its the most stablest rom very good battery life i never had a single fc or bug nothing to say else then its running.froyo 2.2 and so far its the best out of the 10 roms i tried very simple nothing fancy

Read the threads, look at the screenshots and decide for yourself. FreeX10 is the base that all the 2.2 roms are built on, WB's 6.1.3 is a tweaked 2.2 with CyanogenMod settings and lots of tweaks already built in, MiUi roms are made to look like an iPhone without the normal android launchers, the CM7 and gingerbread ROMs are still missing some functionality. Its all just preference at this point, speed wise theyre all similar, most are relatively stable, it just depends what features and style you want. You could try a bunch of them and just make lots of backups and switch between all of them if you have a decent SD card.

It looks like you're the only one who actually read my post ^^ thanks I'm gonna try this
She could use the MIUI ROM of Trip, it's iPhonish and has some little bugs. (Very little) (Not the Gingerbread version since it's not as stable as Froyo)
ROM looks very sexy, fast, smooth etc... Easy to put some girly theme on.
Id suggest not flashing it. I've jailbroken friends iPod before and if anything goes wrong they come to me to fix it and they dont even appreciate the added functionality or use it. Chances are someone with little tech skills will appreciate the change. And if anything goes wrong you'll have to fix it. Unless there complaining about the phone I wouldn't flash it.

ROM Suggestions Needed

My wife uses a Samsung Vibrant and there are just so many issues with it. Currently, it's on the latest stock Froyo release. It keeps losing all of her home screen icons (using stock TWLaucher) and we have to kill TWLauncher or reboot to get them back. Seems to have lag all over the place. Also, wifi signal strength is poor. The wifi calling app constantly turns off saying the wifi signal isn't good enough.
I'd like be interested in trying out a custom ROM. I've tinkered with some of the leaked ROMs, so I'm familiar with ODIN. I've used CWM on my Droid X before, so I should be ok with that as well.
She's not interested in 100 different themes and fancy icons and fancy features, etc. We are just going to want something that's close to stock with some tweaks that might fix some of the issues we are having. Not interested in partially working ROMs where the GPS doesn't work or issues with the camera, etc. Would like wifi calling to work as well. Need something totally stable. I'm not going to want something that's going to need updating weekly either.
Anything out there that meets what I'm looking for?
Please make suggestions.
Hi, same situation here, my gf has stock vibrant with froyo and many issues...
I've cm7 on my N1 so I considered it for the vibrant but at the moment it have troubles with gps and wifi SO I've searched a lot and the much more stable rom (for me of course) is the projectV, it's based on the official froyo with some tweaks and fixes, seems pretty stable until now

I actually had my eye on that one.
It'll improve the lag and losing icons and things like that? I don't need a lagfix on top of that as well?
I'm not doing this for the eye candy (extra lock screens, etc.), I just want things to run more smoothly.
This probably won't help the low wifi signal though, since it's using the same modem as stock froyo, right?
Anyone else want to chime in?
It'll definently improve Lag and that icon problem that you have will not happen. And almost every ROM in here has a Lagfix, so Project-V does have one and will come on when you flash it. (A voice of a robotic women after flashing means that Voodoo is flashing) Voodoo is the name of the Lagfix, which makes our systems run on ext4 instead of the slow RFS system stock that your wife had.
Sent from my SGH-T959 using XDA App
The best thing about Project-V ROM is that its made to be fast and for tweaking, that's why they say they're not competing with Cyanogenmod because it also has both speed and tweaking abilities. So don't worry if you think Project-V is all eye candy, because its both Speed, Stability, and Tweaks!
Sent from my SGH-T959 using XDA App
If anything, I'll probably give this Project V a shot then. My wife will kill me if I F up her phone or cause her to lose stuff.
I flash this with CWM? I don't exactly recall where to get CWM or how to use it, but I'm sure I'll figure that out.
Installing this over stock will be a total data wipe, right? I should back up programs and program data with Titanium first and then restore after?
This does include the lagfix/file conversion? That just happens automatically when I flash this?
Everything works? No serious bugs? I can also flash that wifi calling file in the first post using cwm and then I'll have wifi calling too?
Let's say Samsung releases a 2.3 that's a solid ROM and I want to go back to stock. With this applied and whatever lagfix, file conversion that's been done, how hard would it be to get back to stock?
Anything else I should know?
I've rooted the stock froyo, backupped ALL with titanium and then wiped all from cwm and installed projectV, no problem at all but titanium is required
About gingerbread.... do you remeber the "froyo story" right? I think I seat and wait for the gingerbread version of projectV (or other roms based on official release)! No more stock images in my home please

Yes, wouldn't be surprised at all if there's never an official 2.3 for this. Their 2.2 release was many months behind competing phones originally released around the same time. Still, just want to make sure I understand what I'm getting into here and how hard it would be to get back out. Could I easily get back to the stock froyo that it's on now, if I need to?
I've never did it , but I think u have to odin back to 2.1 stock and then ota (or keys) to 2.2 or whatever

Does the new market that came out this week work fine on this phone?
Before this market, I also had terrible problems updating apps. It was brutally slow and update all usually failed on most apps. I was very surprised that after installing the new market, I was able to do an update all on 20 apps with no problems at all.
My wife had pretty much given up on updating apps on the stock rom.
not yet tried ! But my gf had no problem at all with old and oldest market under tmob, now she's back in Italy, so I've unlocked the sim and still have no issues!
try a few different 1's and see which you like best
I like the bionix 1.3.1 with bali 1.8.7 uv kernel.
i'm not sure about the wifi calling as I dont use that feature.
Tried the new market right now, no proplems as always!

ROMS
As far as which rom you choose is your choice, I am running Toxic Smoke and a lot of people will agree its super quick and responsive but I support almost all roms, Devs here do great work on the vibrant and all should be recognized for it. I may have a solve for your low WiFi signal though..... Have you looked in to the Hardware GPS fix? It involves you opening up your phone and bending a small piece of copper, I did so and put a tiny sliver of credit card plastic under it to keep it from bending back down and now my GPS signal is ridiculous as compared to before. But as I read more there is another copper pin on the opposite side of the phone, that is your WIFI antenna. I then took my phone apart again and did the same thing to that pin and now My WIfI gets great signal. I guess it all depends on how tech savoy you are and how much you want to get into your phone. I know for how much it cost and how much I use my phone I wanted it working 100% so I took the extra time to do all of this and Im quite happy with my Vibrant now. But anyway my specs on my phone are,
ROM: ToxicMusixSmoke
Launcher: Golauncher Pro EX (Which is freaking awesome and free)
Kernal: Bali X (Will increase the responsiveness of your phone ff Overclocked to 1.2 using setCPU, you can download for free on XDA, cost 2.99 or something on the market, the dev offers it for free on here)
+ Hardware GPS Fix and S.gps.zip file for the drivers (You can also find this fine on the Hardware GPS fix post)
I hope this helps as my phone is very stable and I am totally satisfied with my phone as I was not so much at first. I also think with Golauncher you can get stock themes so your phone will look and act just like stock, but run 10000000000000 times better!
I am new to the samsung t959
Any recommendation for ROM? I would like to be as fast as possible, and with a working GPS
I don't mind CM7 as long as it is fastest.
Thanks a million!
]I wasn't looking for fastest.
Just need something to eliminate done of this issues we've had with stock and to be stable with everything functioning correctly.
Project V seems to have done that.
Only issue, so far, is that bloater isn't working and I can't figure a way to get the samsung stock keyboard back. Can anyone help with that?
I like that this rom is so close to stock. If I didn't tell my wife, she wouldn't have even known I changed anything.
While I no longer use it myself, I found Zendroid 2.0.1 with Bali Kernel to be the simplest and easiest to use for a layman, like the average wife or girlfriend
It's extremely lightweight with no bloat to speak of, and battery life is phenomenal (no bloat, no 2g/3g bleeding).
@lexluthor you can use root explorer our similar app to copy the apk to the system/app folder.

Really disappointed with S2!

Hi,
I bought my GS2 less than a week ago, and I'm really disappointed with it!
I rooted and installed custom rom and kernel the day I got it, and since then I've witnessed literally tens of fatal bugs that cause dirty shutdown(Usually I need to remove the battery). Also, apps force close too often. And on top of that I find my device very slow!
I had SE Arc S before GS2. I wanted S2 because I wanted better performance. I didn't get the performance, my Arc was way faster, even despite the two times lower benchmark scores. I'm using Apex Launcher, and every time I scroll the screen, I can clearly see the wallpaper "flashing", seems like it's too "heavy" for a dual-core CPU and probably for the best mobile GPU! Also, when I open a folder, it lags notably!
I have tested about ten different roms, including AOKP(RR & Foxhound), Samsung stock(Omega & Wanam) and MIUI(RGUI and some other which's name I don't remember). Also kernels like Sayah & NEAK. So far, I haven't got a stable nor a fast experience!
I know this isn't the S2 that is known for its performance and quality, this is something different! What could possibly be the cause of my problem? Games run well, but despite that, my phone is slower than a Sony Ericsson(single core & Adreno)!
Please help me, I know S2 can do better!
Mayby you installed a buggy and slow rom and kernel? Flash CM7 or a stock rom and you will be surprised
Edit:
I see that you already tried other roms, go back to the shop you bought it, mayby they can help you...

Your experience is different to 90% of people who post here.
There are no shortcuts to having a phone setup/running the way you want to.
I emphasised that last bit because anyone who offers you anything but the most generic advice will be telling you what works for them, with the way they use the phone & the way they have it set up. If you follow said advice, chances are you won't end up with the results you're looking for.
My advice is to either persevere & keep tinkering with the phone (if you're not a person who likes to do this kind of thing, you're probably in the wrong place), or sell it & get something else.
You're obviously looking for shortcuts/quick fixes, and I'm telling you there aren't any.
Try Ollo Rom, def the best and most stable from IMO

hi
this is very interesting. its some time i don't respond to posts. i am no guru to galaxy s2 but i think the phone is ok. first install stock rom to see if the phone is ok. i mean is charging ok and has no hardware problems. maybe its something hardware and u can take it back to the service and for that u need stock. i think u rushed a little custom roms install. if device is ok then flash a custom kernel like cf root or speedmod kernel to have root and use titanium backup to freeze some bloatware. install apex launcher and see if u get lag. use an app like 2nd core to see if your cpu is working with 2 cores and has hotplug ok. and cpu spy for deep sleep issues. then install battery monitor widget from 3c to see the heating from battery. it should stay between 25 and 41 celsius. then if is ok install a custom rom. i tested wanam, vk and now neatromlite. best satisfaction was with 2.3.6 la4 rom from gb by krinyo but that was in gb.

I'm not usually "question asker" persons, I tend to solve my problems myself. But as said, this problem is very absurd since this phone is a true high end. I'm gonna try to go back to completely stock and customize it again.

That's a really good idea.
Go back to an ICS stock rom you know works fairly well, and go from there. Root the phone first, do a Nandroid backup before you make any other changes/flash any custom roms so you have a backup of a good setup as close as possible to stock (just with a rooted kernel).
Then you can try some roms out, maybe try out a couple of kernels. Best way to approach it is not to make too many changes at once I.E if you flash a rom, try it out for a bit with the supplied kernel before you start trying other kernels with it.
BetterBatteryStats (search for it on here/Google Play) can be invaluable so far as pinning down & eliminating any apps/processes that are causing unwanted battery drain. Also, give benchmarks too much of your time. They're not even close to an approximation of real world use of the phone.
And the other best bit of advice I can give you is read. A lot. Then read some more. Then keep reading till your eyes fall out. Particularly read anything you can get your hands on relating to the particular rom/kernel you're wanting to try out. Read the whole thread (even if it's 100's of pages). That's how you pick up little tricks/knowledge, by reading & then trying stuff out.
Edit - Also, the moment you root your phone & before you do anything else, get Hellcat's kTool from Google Play & backup your EFS. Keep a copy on your external SD card in the phone if you have one, and definitely keep a copy on your PC (and on an external drive or CD/DVD if you're really paranoid). You'd be surprised how many people we get on here with borked EFS/no IMEI & most (90%) don't have a backup.

I had something similar happen to me. I wanted to cry. But try this first (nobody likes hearing a grown man crying).
1- Restore your nandroid backup to get back to stock (you did do a nandroid back... Did you?)
2- Flash a STOCK ICS Rom. Any will do. As long as it's stock.
3- Proceed to flash any custom ICS rom of your choice
4- Flash any kernel of your choice
5- Enjoy
Thing is, some custom roms don't play nicely when you upgrade from gingerbread to ICS directly. Doing the above mentioned should do the trick.

In Need Of Advice For Starting Over

First, an explanation of my situation:
I bought a Galaxy Note at the beginning of the summer. All-in-all, I was pretty happy with it. It was a much improved experience over my Atrix, which was in poor condition by the time I switched over.
I wasn't able to root at first as I only had access to a Mac, and there were innumerable issues in doing so - Odin was PC only, WINE ports of it failed to recognize the phone, the Mac equivalent of Odin (I am spacing on its name right now) didn't work with the Note, etc.
When ICS was officially released, I tried to update to it via Kies. Kies on Mac is a ****storm. It's incredibly buggy, toolbars and menus don't display correctly, it has trouble recognizing the device, etc. I was unable to get it to make a backup, but I eventually managed to load the ROM onto it...
... and that's when the real problems started.
My battery life has turned to crap. Everything runs incredibly slow. Everything's super buggy. Apps force-close all the time. My MicroSD card ended up getting corrupted - half of my music disappeared, of what was left only 1/3rd actually worked. I just reformatted my MicroSD, backing everything important up, etc.
I've been dealing with this for around a month now, as whenever I come to the forum I have no idea where to even start to fix this. I'm up for wiping everything and starting over, and I do have access to a Windows XP machine now so that may be easier... but I don't even know where to go from there.
---------------------------------------------------
That's why I'm here - I need advice. I need advice as to how to clean up the current mess my phone has turned into and start over. I need advice as to what ROM to try and how to go about loading it. I need advice as to whether to root and how to do so. I need advice as to whether to install a CWM, which one to use and how to go about doing so.
Here is what I am looking for, ordered from most important to least:
Battery life is important to me. I loved how long the battery lasted before my attempted upgrade to ICS... now it lasts maybe 1/3 of the time.
I want something that will work - I want stability. No more constant force-quits of every freaking app.
A smooth, fast UI would be preferable.
Feature packed. I like the thought of cutting edge features of newer (or custom) versions of Android being incorporated - but this is far less important to me than battery life and stability.
My preferred method of installation would be using my Mac - but as I said, Windows XP is a very easy option for me as well. I could also install a newer version of Windows if need be, but would prefer not to go through that...
Thanks in advance for any help, advice and recommendations! ^_^
Get Odin and root your phone...
Download and flash TWRP... http://teamw.in/project/twrp
download a ROM of your choice
boot into the recovery ..wipe--->>cache/dalvik cache/ wipe ROM/factory reset..>then go to the install and flash your ROM...
These are very rudimentary instructions I hope they helped a bit...good luck
Do you have an idea for what ROM you like or want? Couple of great ROMs..for stockish check out flappjaxxx's for jellybean check out manelscout4life..stable and fast

Techno is onto the correct answer, unless of course you are truly wanting the stock version back.
Kies and OTA updates are often flawed, and give the end user exactly the type of problems you are stating.
However, if you want a return to stock, the information can be found in the "note super everything thread" located as a sticky at the top of the general note section.
But I do agree with techno, that a root and flash of a quality custom rom is the way to go......g
Thanks a lot, both of you!
As to what ROM I want, honestly that's one of the reasons I have been procrastinating so much -- I have no idea whatsoever. There's such an overwhelming number of options out there, of basic flavors (ICS, JB, GB, CM7, etc.) and tens of derivatives of each one made by different people. I have no idea where to even start making such a decision.
I can tell you this much. On my Atrix, I started with the stock Motoblur-Froyo, flashed GingerBlur, disliked it's bugginess but dealt with it for almost a year, then flashed the CM7-based Neutrino. I wasn't very happy with how skimpy the ROM was but stuck with it until I got my Note. I was pretty satiated with the stock ROM, but decided to upgrade to ICS due to the promise of a better UI, increased functionality and especially a faster camera. While my experience with ICS was terrible, I could see myself enjoying a functional, non-buggy version...
Basically, I have no idea what ROM or even what base OS version I am looking for. That said, I do know the criteria that matter to me, as stated prior:
Battery Life
Stability
Smooth UI
Cutting-Edge Feature Packed
I can't really think of any features I am specifically looking for, other than under-the-radar tethering and top-notch camera speed & functionality .
As I have no attachment to any specific OS version, suppose that would mean that if battery life, stability and smoothness issues are equal amongst ROM variants, I would be looking for a Jellybean ROM - as it would be most packed with new features... right?

That is the best stockish ICS experience you can get and keeps all the functionality of your phone including the spen. He also offers a jellybean ROM but honestly to find the best JB rom for you just read through the threads read and REREAD THE OP of those ROMs..jellybean is fun and cool but not 101% stable yet..people still getting random reboots and some are losing there APN settings..so maybe just flashing ics and playing with those ROMs is best for you for now..FYI the above rom is smooth as silk and great battery life

Again , I agree with Techno, and the rom he posted is the one I'm using to type this.
Flappjaxxx is a fine developer, and he has packed this UCLF6 build with full functionality , and much more.
He is , and will continue to be my top pick for quality builds and performance ...g
This is all really wonderful advice - thanks again!
I guess I have a few last questions:
What is the best way to root at this point? If I recall, there are multiple ways to root via Odin... is there a specific one you would recommend for my current situation (read: current buggy ICS firmware)? A link would be very much appreciated, as the roadmap thread is a bit... overwhelming with all of the options.
Are there any MODs you recommend I install after I have my new flappjaxxx ROM in place? Will tethering work off the bat? Will all of the Gapps (Gmail, Navigation, etc.) be there for me to use? Will I need to install anything else, or is there any recommendations that you have?
Thanks again a ton - you've both been enormously helpful!
Also, I just noticed that the recovery you linked me to (http://teamw.in/project/twrp) has no option for the Galaxy Note...
EDIT: It turns out you linked me to the wrong page - to TWPR 1. Here's the link to TWRP 2.2, for anyone else who comes across this thread: http://teamw.in/project/twrp2
Just my 2 cents. After you get straightened out, you may want to take a look here.

Another stable rom with great battery life, and a super Dev a well. I have been running it since testing and find it to be the perfect rom and team for me.

Okay ....
Please verify your carrier ....model ...and current software version ....then we can point you to the correct bits and pieces of the super thread.
I just want to make sure we are all on the same page ....g
Edit :
I'm away for a few hours ...
But I'm sure a few other helpful folks will chime in with the links ...g
