Ok so heres the deal. My phone shows 2 internal memory sections. One of them is the actual internal memory, but the other (27gb) is ACTUALLY my external SD card. And I don't know what 'SD CARD" represents. Maybe the expanded internal memory? I don't know when this happened or how. I've known it was this way for a while but I didn't worry about it until I ran out of space and it started causing problems. Which it is now. The problem is, that no matter what settings I change in the phone, if I change apps/photos to save to the SD card, they don't really save to the SD card, they save to one of the ones listed as internal memory. So I basically bought a 32gb sd card for no reason because my phone is completely out of space. My apps can't even update. I wake up in the morning with a notification bar full of "insufficient storage, cannot download" messages.
Has anyone heard of this happening before or has it happened to you? Can someone PLEASE tell me how to fix it. Screenshots are attached.
Also, my phone is rooted and running Jokersax (now Th3Bill's) CM10 ROM, but it has been like this probably since Jokers CM9 ROM.
Thanks in advance for the help =]
Okay, I am and have ran almost all Th3Bill ROMS, and Am currently on Pac man. The images below are going to work no matter what ROM you have. First shows my actual internal memory the Rom is running in, SD Card, is the actual internal memory for storage.
The second picture shows another internal which would be my 16 gig card. Which comes as SDCard 1, my internal is known as SDCard 0. This is set because I chose this when installing the Rom, emmc(internal) as my primary.
This would be switched if I chose my SDCard as primary in installation.
With as many applications, games or such you have. You may want to wipe all and reinstall with your SDCard chosen as primary. This way you will have plenty of memory.

Edit your vold.fstab in root/system/etc.
Mine has this
dev_mountsdcard/storage/sdcard0 auto/devices/virtual/block/nandi
dev_mountextsd/storage/sdcard1 auto
Change the sdcard storage/sdcard0 to a /storage/sdcard1
And vice versa

today i noticed on my sd card and phoen storage settings thing
that my sd card hasn't used a single MB but my Phone Storage with 12.77 GB currently has 1.25GB left?
How is that possible? i'm sure i dont have 10GB worth of things in here, to make sure i went on my computer, connected USB and saw that none of my files were bigger than 300MB
Why is this and how can i fix it?
Also if i press Format SD Card, what will happen?
please help me out here guys!
NVM i formatted it and all my crap on the thing is gone, now it feels like starting over, AHH good.
That's maaad weird.
But if you plugged into USB storage mode and if you see that's showing the right storage size properties, then that must be bug of the rom you're using.
Edit: You should have made a backup, before. Althought maybe it wouldn't have worked

Probably because the rom. I imagine it's reading the external_sd folder space and lumping it with the internal since that folder is in the sdcard tree: sdcard/external_sd where it used to be the external was "sd"... Just a guess.
No I formatted on purpose I saved music files before doing it.
Somehow it feels way snappier!

DO NOT FORMAT IT, after i did, i experienced SO MANY ISSUES because on my internal i had a bunch of things that apps depended on.
If you don't mind ODIN and going to JFD then do it.
Do this if your going to ODIN, its worth it.
Settings > SD Card and Phone Storage > Format (forgot which one) then you'll get all the space back then ODIN back to STOCK then it'll put all the files you need back on there, and you'll be good.
DONT just delete it and think your all good,
in your internal theres the update.zip which made me pull my pubic hair out (literally)
IF you dont want to do it, which i don't recommend, just go to settings > sd CARD AND PHOEN STORAGE > and click format on SD CARD or PHONE STORAGE and click confirm, and it'll be done.
Hi,
Is it possible to move an existing app or install new app to USB Storage (comes along with SGS2) and not to the external SD card (i dont have though as 16 Gb is enough for me )......
When ever i install an app its getting installed in System storage (only 2 GB max available and i already have nearly 1.3 gb filled up there ).......so is it possible to move the stuffs from there to the internal USB STORAGE.........i checked app2sd but seems to be its poitning to the external sd card.....
also, when i went to applications and clicked "Move to SD card" its shwoing as not enough memory......
i have tried searching entore XDA but could find a viable solution.....
@JJEgan: Please do not tell me to search the net/ xda forums as a reply to this question (which u have already given to others http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1135233) as i have already searched a lot and tried different apps...but none could give me what i am really looking for.......
Any help on this is much appreciated........
Hmm, when I select Move to SD, it moves it. No problem at all. Puts them on the internal one.

When I moved some of my apps to sdstorage (internal) I did not know that if you do a factory reset it wipes your internal sdstorage (i.e. sdcrad), so make sure you do a backup to computer if you need to factory reset your device.
ATB
Oh wow. Which 'factory reset' function are we talking about in that case? You know, the one through the dialer, or the one in the options menu. I know, they do exactly the same but.. I noticed that if I select wipe data/factory reset in the recovery menu, it does not touch my SD cards at all. Let it be internal or external. Weird huh?
I am not too sure...

The thing is that I keep fiddling with my phone and my internal sdcard got wipe a few times. I know that the dialer will delete your stuff on the internal sdcard, but I think the one on the options menu also delete the sdcard, but I am not 100% sure and dont really want to try again just incase. So unless someone can confirm it better do a backup to PC.

Am i missing something here folks, sorry to hijack this thread i dont wanna start a new one and it's a similar issue i have, when i connect the cable from my phone to the usb on my laptop i cant see my SD card (even after i have unmounted sd card)
what am i doing wrong here, all i wanna do is to copy music and files onto my external SD without having to physically taking the SD card out of the phone.
cheers
Unmount? You must've meant mount. You mean when you select Mount USB from the status bar, the external sd won't show up? What about the internal one, can you access that one?

Sorry to disturb you in your conversation
but, i think my question is not answered or i didnt understood the replies.....can any one of you pls help me
i am having the same problem as smilingcruel. keeps saying not enough memory. Am i actually trying to save to an external sd and is there a setting i should change? running out of space quick.
Hi.
I have the same problem, but it seems no one has answered the question yet.
Is there any solution ?
Maybe the problem has been addressed in some other thread... thanks in advance for your help.
David
I have the same problem that when I say move to SD it tells me "Failed to move application: Not enough Memory" but when I look on the sd card I see it there.
Also, it seems not all can be moved to the internal sd card. I was hoping to do something like link2sd does but it requires you to repartition the SD card and I'm not how to do that with the internal one.
link2sd rocks for creating links for just about any app on your sd card.
Not sure if this would help. I have been having d same prob previously.
But once i inserted a SD card (regardless of wat d size is), i'd able to send d apps to the internal memory through app2sd. (not d external sd in fact)
No answer yet ?
How can we move our app from internal phone memory ( 2 gb ) to out USB Storage (30 gb internal )
Move to SD option says that "Failed to move application. No SD card"
I have enough memory on my phone (32 bg ) and I don't want to add an external SD card , how can I sole this problem ?
thanks
So there is any solution to install apps on USB Storage? Because when I move them by App2sd to external SD they disappeared after rebot.
I'm using Omega v19.2 Jelly Bean 4.1.2 ROM, but probably it's the same problem on stock.
I am having this issue also, but in Jelly Bean.
I used a 4GB SD card to flash my phone with Chameleon ROM (4.1.2 JB) and the SmartROM kernel, when the phone was setup and working I removed the SD card.
Before when I used Resurrection Remix (also 4.1.2 JB) that was not an issue, but then again I had never used a SD card with it.
Now I can not install anything because of lack of space and I can not move any app to the Internal "USB" partition... even though there is 5 GB free.
I did format the entire phone (using CWM Recovery, formatted system, data, etc, etc) before I installed Chameleon.
What gives?
This thread went quiet without a resolution, I have the same issue on 4.1.2, with my internal sd 12gb partition being empty and apps not moving either saying failed or not enough space.
With an external sd card mounted it moves them there, but after a reboot as others mentioned they now longer function.
Any help would be appreciated!
Parition works with CM9 and CM10.2 oddly not sammy 4.1.2
I went into root explorer.
I went into /mnt/
And I noticed there's two options....
/Extsdcard and /sdcard
Seems like all my downloads, music, and everything is getting saved to /sdcard
What does this mean?
P.s. I have a 64gb micro sdcard card.
Sent from my SGH-T999 using xda premium
your extsdcard is your external one in your phone you can remove. i would recomend saving most your files like your music and such to that. sdcard is your internal memory of your phone. you have less space there and should save it for more important things. hope that helped
It means everything is being saved to your Internal Storage. I haven't quite figured out how to default everything to the ExtSdcard yet. I know the camera can. The phone will read everything from the ExtSdcard fine though, such as music and other files.
The ext sd card can be used for the camera/video, CWM backups, music files you copy from your computer, and you can move most any files there that you download.
The internal sd card will be used for all of your apps, there's no way to 'move to sd card', you just have the full 16/32gb internal sd for all of it. Since you will always be forced to use the internal sd card for all app needs, I just try to keep everything on my ext sd card I can (my cwm backups are 1.7gb!). Not that it really matters for me though, I downloaded every app I ever use and a few games and only hit 1.2gb used on my internal sd card.
You can also go to th advanced tab within the stock browser and select memory card for default storage. I am guessing that is ext SD as the other option is "Phone".
Thanks for the information!
This was quite confusing at first. Time to start moving files

permanent fix for this?
My issue is that everything defaults to the /sdcard (internal partition - i'm calling it that for ease of terminology) and some apps just don't give you another option of where to save the media to (or don't let you browse over to the right thing). as it stands, the phone seems to be mounting that internal /sdcard partition as if it were external media, ie in android's default location for external media. thus, apps are looking ofr the REAL SD card and think they've found it but they haven't.
the reason this is a problem for me is 1. i have to change this in every app that allows me to, and 2. CWM sends backups to the internal one automatically and i can't change it and have to manually move the backup images to my external.
the reason i'm going into all of this is i'd like to find a way to entirely get rid of the /sdcard folder representing the internal memory and have the external card take its place. I'd like the rest of my 29ish GB of internal storage to be part of the system partition - where apps go, etc. it's not that i want to use that space, it's that i want to "move to SD" to the right SD. i just don't want the apps and system to treat ANY internal space as if it were external or mounted or anything of the sort.
my last phone, Atrix 2, had like 2-4gb internal. I'm just suggesting stretching that amount all the way to 32gbs and using the SD card as an SD card.
the question, basically, is whether there is any way to make this happen? i came across a thread (google "sd card mount point modification" as i can't post external links yet) elsewhere that discusses doing this with a VTAB and was wondering if this is something that is addressing my (our?) issue, whether it's a recommended solution, and whether it would work on the S3. i'm fine following technical instructions but I have very limited knowledge of the way addressing etc. works on Android and this filesystem. any help (or a redirect to a thread where this is more appropriate to ask) would be greatly appreciated.
Does this issue persist with custom roms? Is it an Ics bug that won't let you install apps to extsdcard or a Samsung intentional crap? I know one other android phones I had I could save apps to sd card no issues.

haven't tried any, waiting for something where key things like camera, LTE, etc all work. It's not that I can't install to extSD, it's that the default is "sdcard" (ie the internal space allocated). it's really a function of the way the system/phone allocates that extra internal space - rather than calling it "internal storage/system storage", they are calling it the "primary sd card" and the actual sd card is being called "2nd sd card". it's this treatment of the spaces by the system that i'm unhappy about, i guess.
that's a good point though, and i am hoping that a custom ROM will do this differently. will update when i find one i like
EDIT: gonna do the Task & Ktoonsez AKOP Rom this weekend, should know how the spaces are treated. again, will update.
Hi guys!
I have a bit of a problem with my S2 storage. I'm running cyanogenmod. So I wanted to ask you guys how could I best manage all my apps/pics/videos/backups etc.
My current status:
System ROM 528MB, 149MB free
Internal 2.11GB, 637MB free
SD Card 12.3GB, 1.35GB free
Ext. SD Card: 31.9GB, 29.1GB free.
So you see here my problem...I have this huge 32GB SD card that is mostly empty, while all my installed apps go either to the 600MB of internal data partition or to the internal memory. Either way, I barely have 2GB available for data, and a huge partition that now I can't even take for the camera (CM will only save to internal DCIM folder).
Titanium Backup allows to move the data folder anywhere, so it's into the big SD card.
ScummVM allows to save the ROMs anywhere, so also these ones are in the SD card.
Movies/Videos I download are in the SD card.
...And that's it. Whenever I take pictures, I need to remember to move the files manually to the external SD, because the camera app will only save them in the internal memory. What can I do? How can I improve this?
THanks a lot!
Up!
A camera app such as Camera Zoom Fx available on play, will allow you to specify where your pictures are saved.
Also, I am running the latest NEATROM lite based on the JB leak and the stock camera allows you to choose between internal and sd card as storage. This may not be the case on older versions of the stock camera.
Hope this helps with the picture issue at least!

Yeah, thanks. All the Samsung stock cameras allow saving into the SD card. The AOSP one, however, doesn't. Still don't quite understand it.
Anyway, besides the camera, would there be a way to move installed apps (or its data) to the SD card?

I have never done this with GS2 but on HD2 we could create a sdext partition on external sd. This partition would then be used by system to extend internal storage. I think this can be done on GS2 via cwm by partitioning sdcard. You would need to backup your data from external card first though before partitioning.
There is also Apps2SD on google play which will move installed apps to ext card.
Yeah, that's it! I did something like this on my Nexus One on its day. It wasn't perfect but it was good. I'll look into this. Thanks!
Title says it all. my internal sd card isnt showing up and i cannot view/use any files on my phone that i have saved or view any pictures. please help me. i need a fix.

keep this one, remove the other one (idk how to)
Without any basic info, I would just simply suggest you to do a reflash, a clean installation, start from scratch.
Re: Internal SD Card not mounting?
Well I'm on the slimbean rom 4.2.2 build 2.5
Current, when I go to storage, it says that I have only 1.97gb of internal storage when I should really have 11gb.
I'm running stweaks with the ajk "everything works" kernel
In storage, there is a category called "USB STORAGE" under it, it says Mount SD Card but it's greyed out. And then it says "insert an SD card for mounting" meaning that my phone doesn't even think I have an internal SD card.
In CWM, of I try to Mount SD card, of doesn't let me and if I retry to format SD card, it doesn't let me

This happened to me once. I removed the card and put in my PC then copied all the data off as a backup. I reformatted the card and then when I put it back into my phone it mounted great. I then went back and moved all the data back via USB.

USB storage would be the internal memory, or internal sd card if you prefer, and SD card would be the external sd card which you must insert first before you can mount. If you will look again, you will probably see that it says device memory is 1.97 gb total space with usually 1.something gb still available. I don't know your rom and kernel real well, but maybe device memory is called internal storage? USB storage should say something like 11.36 gb total space.
So if the USB storage is not being recognized then the problem could be either hardware or firmware related. So did you flash back to stock, or reflash your rom or another rom? That would be the first step of troubleshooting.
you formatted your external sd card to do this?
Researching...
so i did some more looking around on the forums today and found out that there is a way to get back your internal sd card by running these commands
i opened up terminal emulator and ran these commands that i saw on another forum:
su
echo mkdir /storage/sdcard0 > /data/local/userinit.sh
chmod 700 /data/local/userinit.sh
reboot
apparently, after the reboot, your phone is supposed to have mounted the internal sd card manually.
however after trying this method twice and rebooting, i still have the same error and my sd card has yet to be mounted

nope, all it says is that internal storage total space = 1.97gb
SD card stoage space (external sd card) = 3.68gb (this is true becasue i have a 4gb external sd card)
theres nothing that says 11.36gb free total space

I got distracted when I was posting that and hit send before I was finished. I went back a few minutes later to finish it. The whole point was to say that the problem is either hardware or firmware related, and to troubleshoot it you need to flash back to stock, or re-flash your rom or another rom.
Also, assuming the mount commands you used in terminal are good working commands, it would point to possible hardware failure.

CM sometimes messes with the partitioning or something. I have almost no experience with CM so you will need to get some advice from the CM guys. Try posting in the CM user thread maybe. Also mention your memory question there as it could be related to CM, maybe.

SOLVED!
First off, i want to thank all of you guys for helping me out i couldnt have done it without your support and suggestions.
Heres how i solved the internal sd card problem:
Well, i tried to use odin but odin didnt work and then i used the cyanogenmod 9.1 stable build but that didnt fix it either
Heres what i did: Downloaded the Cyanogenmod 10.1 Nightly build for 3/29/13.
after flashing it in cwm (i put it onto my External sd card), i rebooted system, it loaded up and whatnot
and then it told me that my internal sd card was either corrupted or unsupported.
it also gave me the option to format it in order to fix any corrupted files.
so i formatted it and voila! its fixed
