So the other day my friends group message me with their iPhones and normally I never got group messages with an Android device and stayed within the chat. Well today I been group messaging on my iPhone friends and participating on the shenanigans with the stock sms app did I miss something. This is kind of crazy if you ask me I never thought Android would ever integrate with imessage? This was 1 thing I hated when switching to an android from iPhone. But it's freakin working!!!

sorry to burst your bubble, the messages app will automatically send a normal SMS when they can't send an iMessage and receive an sms from a normal phone.that is why sometimes their texts are blue in bubble, indicating an iMessage was sent, and green, indicating a normal sms.
you are just replying to all and your friends are just sending to everyone else. there is no integration.
The thing is it never kept us in the same chat thread before when I get the SMS deal verses I message but it still feels like we're all group chatting and keeping it in the same thread verses multiple text messages are separate

You are group chatting, but technically it is just sending the same SMS to everyone.
There is no way to communicate with Apple's iMessage app.
Figured either way it looks like its working no android ever kept group chats like this it always busted out into different SMS threads Lol it even does it in there phones as well.

I was quite excited when I saw they finally have a group chat rather than a bunch of separate text messages. Great addition!
Use GroupMe app, Android and ios compatible across platforms, use from anything connected via network or even wi-fi (I connect via an ipod touch) direct messages, groups, ect... enjoy

btothec is using VVM. You are using AT&T Messaging, a different app. There's nothing in the settings about playing messages? For the day I used it I got a VM that was converted to text, but it didn't play on my speaker.

hmm i see
wheres this ATT messaging app that gives a transcript of the voicemail message?
You can get it in the market. I uninstalled it because I didn't like the way it took over SMS messaging. Once you install it you lose VVM on the account and have to call CS to get stock VVM back, though, so be aware of that.

That "AT&T Messages" app actually came pre-installed on my Note. I ignored it, though, and chose to sideload the VVM apk instead.
(I use the GO SMS app for text messaging).

The "AT&T Messages" app handles both text messages and visual voicemail, so the stand-alone sms messaging app no longer handles your text messages. Make sense?

It's FREE on any properly provisioned AT&T LTE device, and $2.99 per month on their 3G devices.

It does take over as VVM and it does display a unified inbox of all messaging. But it doesn't take over SMS/mms from the messaging application. You can still use that or Go SMS or any other if you want...but while AT&T Messages is installed you will get the orange notification in the status bar.

Whenever a certain friend sends a text to me I get it as a MMS msg instead of just a normal SMS. Is that because he is doing something wrong? I get normal txts from my wife from her I phone. What's the reason for this?

That's weird I send regular texts and group chats with iphone users and never have that problem. Try clearing the cache for both apps or freeze the stock messaging app.
If I try a send a text and select 2 contacts this shows up:

I know for awhile there iPhone to android and vice versa was having issues. Don't know if they ever fully figured it out. They being apple or google. I don't have any I-friends lol so I can't test for ya. But if your getting the message I wouldn't worry over much.

i personally was able to group mms with 2 iphone users on the stock messaging app but now i use the gosms app because it has emojis and you know how iphone users love their emojis....
this happens all the time to me. Whenever one of my friends initiates a text message to multiple persons from his iphone, it shows up on my end as a multimedia message. Whenever one of my iphone friends sends me just a one-on-one text message it shows up as a regular SMS.
I see this problem more often when I don't clear out messages from the recipient in a conversation. Last night I started seeing it happen real bad and I noticed there were about 200 messages in the conversation so I deleted the thread and the problem went away.
I do hate the problem though, I always receive "multimedia message, press <here> to download" and then you have to wait.
So last time I knew, I could not receive MMS messages to my Google Voice number on Verizon. Then, I got this today.

What carrier is the sender on? AFAIK, MMS works to and from Sprint numbers.
The person is on Sprint. So, basically you're saying if anyone from Sprint sends me a MMS that it will email me the picture but no other carrier?

I get an email of the picture or audio if someone sends a MMS to my Google Voice number. I didn't think that the app was able to receive them.

Yea. Google and Sprint have agreements in place for Google Voice. Sprint users can also port their numbers to Google Voice directly without having to have a separate carrier number.
I use Google Voice and get pics to my phone with BOOST Mobile
I have my Gvoice settings set to:
Forward copy of my texts to gmail.
Some smaller ones do, some larger ones do not. I am almost certain that thumbnail sized simple jpegs will usually go to your smartphone.
Regardless, as long as you have this option, and an internet enabled phone, you may still be able to manually log into your gmail account to view any MMS messages that don't go to your phone. Audio and video too.

I receive images to my email regardless of carrier. I have gotten them from ATT, Sprint, Verizon and T-mobile accounts. I still can't send them out. I have to email any images.
When I first started using GVoice I was not able to receive any MMS texts. Then at some point the MMS texts came to my GMail. Then later on the GVoice app started doing what the OP said. I guess now GVoice can receive MMS texts and it notifies you on Gvoice but sends the media portion of it to your GMail.
ya on any phone i've used google voice ive never gotten mms at all. I'm using page plus as my carrier
So I woke up this morning to find that my VZW bill is 330 dollars over thanks to the Group MMS feature. A bunch of my friends have iPhones (most VZW) and multiple group chats took place. According to the VZW rep, any text message that includes 3 or more ppl is automatic MMS and regardless of carrier counts as 1 MMS. So how am I supposed to group message? I used 1700 this month alone (granted I'm only allotted 300 MMS a month but still). Anybody else having issues like this???

1. QA forum is the place for this.
2. Did you not read the warning when creating a group message in touchwiz? It tells you exactly whats going on and warns you. It even gives you a toast that it is converting it to multimedia message. I am sorry it happened to you, but you were warned and instead glossed over the signs, ignoring them.
Edit: Wanna keep doing it? Simple solution: Get a better mms plan.
Issues? The only issues I see here are your ignorance and inability to read. Get unlimited texting if you're going to be using that much.
Why don't you have unlimited text? Seriously

I'm guessing the OP wants to keep unlimited data and has not gone to one of the tiered plans that have unlimited text.
To the OP, either get unlimited text or a Google Voice number.
I have unlmited text and mms with unlimited data.

DOH! I didn't think about that. I got unlimited text by going tiered and just assumed everyone does things the same way I do.

Since when do you have to go to a tiered plan to have unlimited text and data?
I do have unlimited data and was under the assumption that I had unlimited MMS. Never have had I issues before with this in the past which is why I was asking. My apologies if this post somehow offended those of you above. Either way, thank you for your input.

Seriously, this really infuriates me.
I have to regularly send text messages to 30 people. Sometimes they are up to 3 messages long, that's 90 messages. This should not be a problem.
I have a Samsung Galaxy S4 with the latest CyanogenMod.
- First, Android seems to have a 100 messages per hour hard limit. Still, if my messages are max 3 texts long, this should not be a problem.
- The native Messaging app, nor Google's Hangouts have the option to text a contact group.
- When I enter all recipients manually in Hangouts, it keeps erroring. I'm fortunate to have noticed that DeskSMS can show me which messages got though. Usually around half of them. I them manually select the others and retry. (The built-in retry option retries to send to everyone and so it can take hours and multiple retries before everyone received the message at least once.)
- There are specific apps in the Play Store for Group Messaging. I tried several ones:
- [Group SMS & Scheduler](https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=org.baole.app.groupsmsad2) - This app used to work on my HTC Desire, but fails for my S4. It just sends some random messages (last time I checked it broke the multipart sms up in parts) and sends some random parts to maybe 5 people. Absolutely worthless.
- [Groep SMS](https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.mobappli.groupsms) - This app just does nothing when I tried it last time. It also feels quite weird so I didn't try it again.
- I also tried to use replacement texting apps like Go SMS or Handcent, but they don't work if you don't configure them as the default text messaging app. I'd like to stick to Hangouts if possible.
- Lastly, whatever option I tried, something I always get is 5-10 popups telling me that "App X" is sending a lot of messages and if I want to allow it to continue. I'm suspect that this messages may cause group texting apps to fail because they just try all messages sequentially and don't place them in a queue or something. Once one of them fails because I have to confirm it, all other after it may fail as well.
Google really sucks at providing a good user experience. They always come with "innovative and shiny" new features no-one needs, but fail to provide a good experience for the core functionality of their (Android) products.
Is there anyone that knows a solution for my situation? It would be much appreciated!

Why to blame whole android dude?

CyanogenMod has an option to increase the SMS limit, at least CM10.2 does, I believe they ported it to CM11 as well. You can look into Settings - Security - SMS message limit (near the bottom).
If it is not there, you can try this.

The native CyanogenMod Messaging app does have the option. When you write a new message, press the + sign to the right of the contact input option, and from there you can add contact groups. See the attached image.
