I searched up "MHL hdmi" and got a few threads from other phones forums on XDA; half were before our phone came out or the cable was available.
My question is which mhl adapter actually works on our phones (i777)
I've seen a large variety out there; ranging from white to black, 2 cables or 1 cable +inlet for power cable, "samsung" imprinted mhl adapters, and OEM ones.
I've read some distort the phone screen while connected to the tv, others cut off wifi while connected, some OEM can use remotes to operate the phone, while others didn't or OEMs not performing properly.
I've seen generic ones from $6 up, OEM logo'd ones at $6 and OEM packaged ones at $33+
Do we have a specific model/brand sure to work without error? Using TV remote is a plus. I've seen some for sale with wireless mini keyboards (bonus) and that catches my eye

I'm personally just using one random black one I got on ebay, seems to work fine.
I would THINK MHL is a standard, and though some might not function QUITE as well as others, they should all serve their basic purpose.
I haven't seen any that don't require USB power though, mind linking to the one you've found? Maybe link the ones with the Mini Keyboards...? I'm interested.

Can you navigate the phone with TV remote? Do you have to do something special to make it work?

I second this question. If it can Navigate the phone, I'm sold. (I would assume it can otherwise what's the point?)
Does any ics build support mhl yet?
I'm using the one from the Samsung Infuse and it works perfectly. I don't know about this TV remote thing since I have a BT ps3 media kb I use.
Excuse my typos, sent from my SGS2 using Tapatalk.
I bought a mhl to hdmi cable I'm new to this I plugged it into my phone and hdmi but got nothing then I also hooked up USB power to it when I did that it showed a input for it on my TV but still no video does this not work with ics?
It works with ics. Try this, plug hdmi cable from tv to adapter plug power cable from wall adapter charger to adapter. Then plug into phone. Also what kind of mhl adapter do you have? I personally went through a few and ended up with getting the samsung one for me it works the best. Others had flaky power adapters or reports of doa. Anyway try again like that if it doesn't work try changing hdmi cables I've seen people have that as their cause as well. Also I can tell you that mhl and blue tooth and wireless work awesome on ics better than gb. I can even use it with a ps3 controller etc..

I don't think it works on AOKP or CM9, without installing an extra app. I've been using it on SHOstock 2 just fine. I think the TW ROMs have the support built in. I know 2.3 MIUI does not support MHL.
It only needs the power adapter if your TV does not support MHL. If your TV is MHL compliant it will send power over the HDMI port and charge your phone. The standard is still new, almost no TVs support it yet. You can still mirror the screen over HDMI with a MHL adapter, but you have to power the adapter. MHL compliant TVs should be able to control the phone through the TV, but because those TVs are as common as unicorns I haven't tested it. With a non MHL compliant TV all it does is accept the input from your phone. You must still navigate on your phone. But, you can use a Bluetooth keyboard and/or mouse to control your phone wirelessly.
I got the cheapest MHL adapter on eBay that shipped free from inside the US. I think I paid ~$7. Its worked fine for me over the past 6 months.

Im running ICS 4.0.3 SHOstock2 v2.2.4 with 3.0.30-cherrypicker kernel on my AT&T Samsung Galaxy S II i777. I purchased a MENOTEK MHL to HDMI adapter and Im trying to use it with my RCA Plasma TV. I connect the adapter to the HDMI cable then the power cable to the Adapter, and then I connect the adapter to my phone. The tv recognizes that I have the HDMI cable plugged in then the screen goes black. While I have the adapter plugged into the phone, the phone works fine, only there isn't anything being displayed on the screen. I try to launch several video apps, still nothing. The weirdest thing is when I unplug the adapter from my phone, it causes the phone to freeze and I have to pull the battery to restart. Is anyone else having a simular problem and may know of a fix. Ive done a few searches but havent been able to find anything. I appreciate any help that I can get.
I would ask in the SHOstock thread. It worked fine for me, but I switched to AOKP. The last SHOstock I tried MHL was 2.2 I think. I would guess its a kernel thing. Maybe try another kernel?

Thanx! I will definitely look into a different kernal. The only problem with asking on the SHOstock thread is my account is new. I don't have enough posts to comment on that thread.

it should work with shostock I've been using it with phone bricker works good. The only roms that won't work at least as of now is aosp aokp roms cause our bases are derived from Samsung bases international or otherwise which contain it. A long time ago entropy told me something along the lines of the mhl code being proprietary closed source which is why cm9 etc doesn't have it. But with ics and the huge user base if anyone is talented enough to get that working they will.

Also for the TV remote in the other post is correct at least what I'm pretty sure your talking about. Cause a friend of mine just got one of those new voice/gesture etc Sammy TVs and they have mhl, dlna etc. Honestly at that point you aren't concerned with a phone remote when you can just use gestures and voice

I updated to the most recent update ShoStock 2.2.6 but I still seem to have the same problem. The television screen is blue before I Connect the phone. Once the phone is connected the screen goes black but doesnt mirror the phone screen. When I unplug the phone from the adapter it become unresponsive and I have to reboot. I starting to think the adapter may be DOA

I'm with you in the ShoStock MHL woes. Some say it works, it hasn't been working for me. The adapter is not DOA if the screen is going black and changing on the TV. My TV (Samsung) recognizes there is an MHL device connected with AnyNet+ but the screen goes black as well. The adapter worked on GB Roms, Unnamed/Unoriginal to be exact. Will try out PhoneBricker.

I'll vouch for that general design of the keyboard, seems like Ion knock-off.
I have purchased 2 MHL adapters to use my NOTE on one of my 3 HD tvs. I own a Toshiba, Sharp Aquos, and a Vizio. All have the same problem. Sometimes it works for a minute. Sometimes it take a minute and works for a few seconds sometimes it doesn't work at all. Is there something I can put on my NOTE or a setting I can change on my NOTE or TVs that makes these things work? I don't want to dump money on a Samsung brand dock if I'm gonna have the same issue. I have tried with short HDMI cords and long ones. I bought a 20ft HDMI cord specifically so I could sit on the couch and use it for Netflix, movies, music, and/or games for my kids to play. Any help would be GREATLY APPRECIATED!

may be the micro usb interface of Note has contact problem. I just bought a mhl cable. it works for my LG E970 but does not work for my NOTE i717. I found the micro usb interface of Note isnot stable.
The mhl port on this tablet has a weird shape to it, I can't fit my 11 pin mhl cable that works with my galaxy note 2 into the port.
Does anyone know if the xtz uses a 5 pin port? Or can anyone point me to an mhl cable that's compatible with this tab?
Thanks

The tablet Z uses the 5 pin mhl. I have one and it works fine.
the 11 pin mhl should at least fit at the port is just a standard microusb / mhl port, which you would also use for charging and data transfer.
It might fit, I didn't try to hard out of fear of damaging the port. The 11 pin plug has this indent that is supposed to prevent you from sticking it in a normal micro usb port

but sony mhl adaptor IM750 has only added advantage, it's cec compatible, ie, you can control the phone ( every mhl xperia phone) or tablet ( not confirmed or verified by anyone yet), via tv remote, you can do almost anything apart from call the phone
basically with cec compatible, you can use the phone or tablet as a media player with no hassle, I had working via dk22 dock for xperia tx, micro hdmi via xperia arc before that.
IM750 is the non dock version, Samsung official mhl adaptor ( whether for s2, s3 or mhl2 standard s4 - not confirmed) is not cec compatible.
I bought cheap 5 pin mhl adapter from ebay. I can't post link jet.
It is For Samsung Galaxy S2 HTC/Nexus/Note but it won't work with my tablet z. Mhl icon appears on my tablet status bar but tv is black- no picture no sound.
I use original charger to power mhl adapter and i did everything like in youtube sony offical mhl tutorial videoideo with tanja
Any ideas why others work galaxy s2 adapter?
Spg321, android 4.2.2 stock non rooted
also bought a fosmon adaptor from ebay for the tab it work ok but the output display side bars on my TV. (tried it on two different HDTV) The TV is set for 1080p. I got in the service menu and force test MHL video to 1920x1080p and still have the side bars ?????
May the problem be caused by fact that my tv is not fullHD, it is 720p?
Item description from ebay:

I bought the Samsung Galaxy S II MHL HDTV Adapter and although it works it is not a good fit for the tablet and puts pressure on the port cover. I have not used it much so have not replaced it but if I was using it regularly I wouldn't be happy with Samsung's offering.

Has anyone found a quality HDMI adapter? It seems like there are a few "options", but none that really stand out as the right one. Preferably an OEM / Samsung adapter, but whatever...

Skiva MHL Micro USB to male HDMI cable (6.5 feet) for Samsung Galaxy S3 (SIII LTE i9300 L710 i747 i535 T999), Samsung Note 2, Galaxy S2, Galaxy Note,
It needs to be plugged into a USB power source but it works well.

Yea, I also bought something similar like Skiva MHL from eBay for my Note2 and it works pretty well on Note Pro too. I believe this is better than you have to buy the MHL adapter, I also did and it is more tiring when you have to bring the HDMI with you; it just makes things more complicated and the quality on TV is not that great comparing to the other one. I also experience 2 black panels on the left and right side of my Sony TV, this was explained by the resolution of Note Pro is too high for the TV or some sort, my TV is full HD by the way. Hope this helps.
Hi,
Does anyone on this forum use their Z2 over MHL?
I was wondering what MHL Cable / Adaptor you would recomend.
I have seen a Sony one, but is is very expensive (£30).
I was wondering what the thoughts on the cheaper ones were.
Thanks
in Advance.
Anyone got any recommendations for this? I too am interested.

I bought this:
amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B00CI42C4S/ref=oh_details_o00_s00_i02?ie=UTF8&psc=1
which works perfectly but on my TV requires a separate power source for the MHL.
I've been using a Rocketfish MHL adapter for the appradio in the wifey's car until I can get an adequate mirrorcast dongle.
I haven't had any issues with it. It also comes with a 11 pin adapter for newer Samsung devices.
The Samsung branded 5 pin MHL adapters should also work and be found in stores(they had them at my local Bestbuy along with the Rocketfish I bought).
I'm not sure exactly what you're looking to do, but maybe some sort of cast dongle might be a better option.
For streaming I like using chromecast best(there's 3rd party ones that support chromecast/mirrorcast/DLNA/airplay in one unit). The user experience is much nicer with chromecast but you're limited to using apps with cast icons and a wireless network(mirrorcast/dnla don't require this).
For screen mirroring a straight HDMI cable works best but not even Motorola puts HDMI ports on their devices anymore. MHL adapters work for the most part just as well but can have more failure points and compatibility issues. I haven't tried mirrorlink yet(I do have a new appradio that supports mirrorlink as well as HDMI but it's still in the box) but from what I under stand it's not as fast as HDMI and may give noticeable lag.
