To choose the right ROM you need to be in the correct forum first (for your phone!) and to check for the android development sub forums, most ROMS land there... the kind developers that call xda home make a huge effort to make their ROM posts as informative and accurate as possible, they include tons of screenshots, the spec and features list for their ROMS, a couple of variants and mods sometimes, a changelog and the download links
For the S3, i've found the Siyah kernel to be the most reliable and battery efficient
And kernels are installed pretty much like any other flashable zip in most cases, power users do this with adb and some other methods i'm not aware of (and rather not be, i know the basics and most importantly, know how to follow instructions to the letter, doing this yourself will save you hours of frustration and anger)
As a personal note, the FoxHound rom for the S3 is mighty awesome, it comes with AROMA (a touch installer that pops up after you've begun to flash it with your recovery, it allows you to customize the ROM to your needs before starting to use it) and has TONS of options to tailor it to your preference, it also doesn't eliminate the samsung features completely (although you CAN eliminate them should you want it so)
I hope this was helpful
P.S: thank me if you like it, there's a button for it

[MOD] I9100 ROM Hellraiser for I777 (Alpha 0.3.1, 12/3/2011) [BUGS/DEV ONLY]

This thread is now for bug reports/development only. Do not post in this thread any more until you have fully read the first four posts of this thread, and the first two posts of the Q&A Thread. If you post in this thread and it is clear that you have not read the posts indicated above, your post will be reported. For other discussion and "Is this a bug?" type questions, go to the Q&A Thread
Heeeeere we go! As LinuxBozo, one of the most talented developers in the Infuse community said, "Welcome to a new and sick, twisted world!"
Over in the Infuse community, we had an oddball device that had little in common with anything else. As a result, it was not easy to port ROMs from the I9000/Captivate. However, after LOTS of work, LinuxBozo pulled it off and came up with an automatic porting package that could get most I9000/Captivate ROMs running on the Infuse. As a result, it opened the Infuse community up to a massive variety of ROMs.
For the month since the I777 came out, people keep asking about I9100 ROMs. In general, the answer has been, "It should be possible, but no one other than designgears has done it yet." - I didn't have the time as I had too much kernel work to do. However, as the kernel is at a fairly mature and stable state, when someone asked for SensatioN to be ported, I figured it was time for a challenge.
I was successful, but encountered a few glitches. Tethering was broken, fortunately the Infuse community had the same issue and the same fix worked. Mic in calls was broken, just like CM7 - I finally got atinm's list of the blobs to swap out. As a result, nearly all of the challenges in porting an I9100 ROM to the I777 have been identified.
This is a package that should automatically port most I9100 ROMs to the I777. It has been tested by myself as follows:
SensatioN 1.8 by Crysis21 has been manually "Hellraised", and was the basis on which this package was developed. Do note that the author of this ROM tends to be unresponsive to porters. I asked for permission to release a ported ROM but never heard back.
VillainROM 3.0 was the first ROM to be tested with the attached package - it seems to work, if there are any problems, it is likely because I missed something in the permissions settings of the updater script. - Also, I have tested JKay's Deluxe Themes on VillainROM successfully - his thread is at http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1154278 - You need to use the XXKI3 theme packages.
In general, XXKI3-based ROMs work. XXKI4-based ROMs may have issues with WiFi (see Known Issues below). I am working on compiling a more complete list in the Q&A Thread.
Please don't report bugs with ROMs to the upstream author of the ROM in the event that the bug was caused by Hellraising - unfortunately, it is going to be very difficult to identify when Hellraising caused a bug and when the ROM itself has a bug.
Instructions for the package:
Download an I9100 ROM to be Hellraised - must be CWM-flashable Gingerbread (ICS will NOT happen until after kernel source code becomes available, and if you spam me with 10000 "did you see this" links when it does I'll just go watch some TV. You have been warned.), and must be Samsung-derived (not CM7/MIUI/AOSP-based), ROMs distributed as Odin .tar files like Litening won't work. (I've tried...)
Download the package above
Unzip the ROM, check to make sure it does not have bootloaders. If it has Sbl.bin or param.lfs in it, RUN AWAY. No ROM developer should EVER include a bootloader without explicit warnings of this, if a ROM includes a bootloader it's a sign that it'll be **** in almost all cases. Similarly, param.lfs corruption can lead to a device that won't boot and I believe it can even break download mode. ROMs shouldn't be messing with this either without warning users.
Once you've done your safety check, put the ROM zip and the Hellraiser zip onto your SD card
Enter CWM
You should probably do a Nandroid backup here...
Wipe Data/Factory Reset - Some ROMs write apps to /data and you'll lose these if you wipe afterwards
Flash the ROM, DO NOT REBOOT, STAY IN CWM
Flash the Hellraiser package
Reboot and enjoy!
Known issues:
NFC files are included, but enabling NFC requires smali modifications to Settings.apk on some ROMs. (Starting to look like this is only for I777 stock-derived ROMs - VillainROM doesn't actually need any smali.)
Touching an NFC tag containing NDEF data will cause the NFC service to crash due to being unable to obtain STOP_APP_SWITCH permissions
Wifi tethering settings are not persistent and keep resetting themselves (At least on SensatioN and VillainROM) - Workaround for now: Enable tethering, THEN set the SSID and password, OR see http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1335377&page=24
When initially setting up the ROM, it claims that network time is not available, and takes you to Settings - where you can check it to enable it and it works fine... Infuse Hellraiser had the same issue. Happens only once per flash so it's a very low priority.
When flashing other ROMs that do device compatibility checks (such as CM7), they will think you have an I9100 instead of I777. You need to flash an I777 ROM first.
Download links have been moved to the ChangeLog post (Post #2 below)!
Alpha 0.3.1 Release, 12/3/2011:
Download: http://www.multiupload.com/NUV8KDF9OZ or http://dev-host.org/4up if MultiUpload never comes back
Changes:
Only one - actually include Daily Driver 12/1/2011. People who flashed 0.3.0 only need to reflash Daily Driver from my kernel thread, no need for a full flash of Hellraiser.
Alpha 0.3.0 Release, 12/1/2011:
Download: PULLED, BAD RELEASE: Use 0.3.1 instead. If you already flashed 0.3.0, flash the 12/1 release of Daily Driver
Changes:
Update to some random kernel pulled from the wrong location on my hard drive
Overwrite /system/etc/apns-conf.xml with a "known good" one
Overwrite the CSC with a "known good" one
Home button haptic fix, courtesy of LinuxBozo of Infuse Hellraiser. Thanks to amtrakcn for pointing out that LinuxBozo's fix works on our device
Alpha 0.2.2 Release, 11/10/2011:
Download: http://www.multiupload.com/C1W5S6XW0R
Changes: Update to Daily Driver 11/10/2011 kernel (disables autoroot which broke root for a bunch of people), tiny installer script cleanups.
If root is working well for you, it is not worth flashing this
If root is broken for you, I recommend installing Daily Driver 11/10 and flashing ChainsDD's latest su package (linked from the DD thread's first post now). If you flash this it will remain broken, this only fixes new installs
Alpha 0.2.1 Release, 11/08/2011:
Download http://www.multiupload.com/ORQESFHVBT
Changes: Only one, replace Nfc.apk with the correct one. Fixes NFC service force closes.
Alpha 0.2 Release, 11/07/2011:
Download - PULLED due to excessive fail. Use 0.2.1 instead!
Changes:
Should now flash without the mount workaround trick after ROMs that unmount /system
Added NFC files from the I777 and one permissions XML - These combined with a small mod to Settings.apk will allow NFC to work. Will post details for ROM devs on making these mods soon. NOTE: Right now this only supports reading tags! Google Wallet support requires a LOT more work, if even possible! (Edit: I'm fairly certain it'll only be possible in CM7 - but I think I also know what's needed for the CM7 guys to get the rest of the way there.
Initial release, 11/06/2011:
Version - Alpha 0.1
Download - http://www.multiupload.com/9RJKKSBFZ0
How it works
Here's the details of how this package works.
1) This package replaces the modem with a known good I777 modem
2) It also replaces the kernel with an I777 kernel (Right now, Daily Driver 11/03 release) - This is half of the keymap fix. Also, DD 11/3 contains a fix that allows wifi tethering to work on both I777-derived ROMs and I9100-derived ROMs
3) It replaces two of the keymap files in /system/usr/keylayout/ - see http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1313050&page=56 for details - thanks to MikeyMike01 and Dungeon47 for this one
4) It replaces most of the audio library files to fix the issue with outgoing mic audio in calls - this is the same fix used by Cyanogenmod 7 - see https://github.com/koush/proprietar...12f711197665edeb28522386a77a62da24bab#diff-28 for details, thank atinm for this one
Attached:
Hacked settings APK for VillainROM 3.0 - This, along with Alpha 0.2.1, should allow you to turn on NFC. May work on other XXKI3-based ROMs
For ROM Authors:
To get NFC to show in Settings, baksmali the Settings APK and open WirelessSettings.smali
Look for the line below:
Code:
invoke-static {p0}, Landroid/nfc/NfcAdapter;->getDefaultAdapter(Landroid/content/Context;)Landroid/nfc/NfcAdapter;
Delete the next two instances of lines that contain the word removePreference
NFC should then show in Wireless settings
Great work! I can't wait to try this out when I have some free time.
well aren't you awesome bro. Thanks a lot. This opens the door to a lot of good things.
this looks awesome i have to find a rom i want to try from their forums though since lite'ening doesnt work

Awesome, what would be some of the reason why this would not work with some roms, since the package addresses most of the differences between the two phones? Is there something we should look for besides bootloader, that may stick out as a possible incompatibility?

Unsure yet - most likely any remaining issues will be common.
The one thing might be if the ROM has a special unusual kernel dependency. I'm not too far from Ninphetamine, but there might be some wacky kernels out there that have wacky ROMs paired with them. Such ROMs would even have problems with other I9100 kernels on the I9100.
I don't expect anything to be blatantly obvious at this point... My biggest worry is that I botched the permissions in the updater script.
Thank you Entropy, can I use this with i9100 MIUI rom as well?

[Q] Few questions about Android

Hello, new Galaxy Ace and curently in the process of customizing the **** out of it. Few questions:
1. Exactly what pre-installed apps can I uninstall safely? Device is rooted, on GB 2.3.5.
2. I plan on installing SaidyBoost, do I need to uninstall apps if I'm going to do this?
3. The thread is http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1561806, could someone please tell me how I install a kernel that supports init.d, and should I install ext4lagfix?
4. To install it, do I just put the .zip on the SD, then update from recovery mode, and do I need CWM, and does this void the warranty (I'm guessing yes).
I'm sorry for the spiel; I'm usually the one doling out the advice but I am a total n00b to Android. Any help and time taken is much appreciated, thank you

1. You don't uninstall.. It's impossible. Maybe possibru if you have a file manager and you navigate into /system/app then mount it as R/W (read & write) and delete them (not so recommended though)
2.No need to do anything, just install it
3. Get yourself a ROM, and see in the ROM thread which kernel runs best with that ROM. Many kernels support init.d
4. Dude, forget about the warranty. Get rid of your paper, your warranty was gone the second you rooted your phone
Press thanks if i helped

I'm literally retarded, I can't find the thank button >.> tell me where and you shall receive.
It is possibru to uninstall the stock apps, I already installed a few. Just want to know which ones exactly.
Could you point me towards what I should download?
And I am keeping the warranty because if I really screw it up, I can hardbrick it on purpose and send it back for a new one. How shly

Soo, get yourself a recovery, boot into recovery, make a backup.
If you want to learn ROM development, this is the place for you ..
It will tell you what to do, and how to do..
After that you will learn to delete apps you dont want(ex.Maps;if u dont use maps)
Then you make a flashable zip and install it through the Recovery you installed previous
The thanks button is below the post im posting now
One better (IMO) option than uninstalling pre-installed apps (as this has been known to cause problems with updates and stability/performance for some) would be to use an app like Gemini App Manager to turn off Autorun settings (usually just turn off "On Boot Completed", but some other events can help also) for the apps you don't want to use. That way, these apps will not use up resources in the background without running the them yourself. That way you can keep the apps around in case some future update or something else requires their presence.

If you don't want to mod a ROM, then just grab one from the Android Development Section of your phones thread, because they already have many useless apps removed, and some tweaks applied

[Appreciation][Request] Thanks to developers of this forum

I joined this forum 7 months ago. Since then I've been using mods made by developers of this forum. Mods which have made life easier and using my phone more fun. I would like to thank the developers for those superb mods, rooting solutions, CWM, quickpanels, battery icon with percentage, init.d and build.prop tweaks to improve performance, fantastically modded stock home launchers, ports of walkman player, clear bass; sound mods, beats, xsincrediblebass; fonts, system apps from other phones, boot animations, supercharger, rebootpower menu etc etc :victory:
I would also like to make a special mention of ROMs for locked bootloaders. When I first unlocked my bootloader and tried to apply a custom kernel, I realized that my phone has NAND bad blocks. So I had thought that I would never be able to flash custom ROMs. But thanks to the developers who started making custom ROMs for locked bootloaders, I could get a taste of custom ROMs too:good:
There are somethings that I would like to request,
1) May be a method to flash custom kernels for phone's which have bad sector errors. May be custom kernels in .ftf format which can be flashed in flashmode??
2) A way to apply only the mods that we require. For example If my systemUI already has a quickpanel and I want to apply a mod which changes battery icons, it should be able to update our existing systemUI.apk or whichever system apk is involved, so that the previous mods are unaffected. Not only battery icons but big mods like lockscreen mod etc could be applied by this method of updating existing files.
3) I would really like to have a taste of CyanogenMod ROMs on my phone with locked bootloader:fingers-crossed:
I don't know if these things are impossible. I'm just a noob

2. Remove whatever you do not need from the mod zip file using 7zip, but make sure not extract the files.
3. That's impossible. As CM needs custom Kernel, and custom Kernel needs unlocked bootloader.

I do remove files which I don't need from flashable zips. But in some cases, like battey icon and quickpanel, same file's modification is needed. SystemUI.apk and may be framework.apk. When I apply a mod related to these files, already existing file will be replaced. So for one mod v have to sacrifice an already existing mod
I'm still hopefull about cyanogenmod. May be someone could make a cyanogenmod based ROM with many of it's features included for stock kernel:fingers-crossed:

[Q] New and needing direction

I am fairly new to the Android scene, and even newer to the rooting scene as well.
I am a A+ computer tech, that said I know nothing about Android, rooting or customizing the interface and am learning daily, I have been told by associates that the xda forums are the best resource for finding stable usable custom ROMs and information,
so I enrolled to pick some brains and hopefully learn a few things.
now since my ability to search forums has always has always been "top notch", (Pinocchio's nose got nothing on me by that statement), I'm sure I'll be asking questions that have been asked a bunch of times, I respectfully ask that in stead of flaming me, please just post a link to the proper forum post and I will be greatly appreciative.
question 1.
where do I find a rom install guide for idiots, primarily for a galaxy player 5.0 YP-G70
question 2.
what is the most stable and fully functional ROM for my YP-G70, when I say fully functional I mean camera and all, as I have been reading there are issues with newer ROMs with the back facing camera, and I need the camera to be fully functional as I use it almost daily at work for lables and assembly/disassemby pictures., I've heard that Cyanogenmod is one of the best out there, is there a fully functional and stable version that will work with my YP-G70?
question 3.
an idiots guide for what can be accomplished by rooting and how to do it, such as turning off adds, removing or moving stock programs and settings etc.
there will always be more questions but I won't push the noob envelope to much, these three are my most pressing

what is the most stable and fully functional ROM for my YP-G70, when I say fully functional I mean camera and all, as I have been reading there are issues with newer ROMs with the back facing camera, and I need the camera to be fully functional as I use it almost daily at work for lables and assembly/disassemby pictures., I've heard that Cyanogenmod is one of the best out there, is there a fully functional and stable version that will work with my YP-G70?

I'm running CyanogenMod 10.2 (4.3.1) and I'm able to use the back camera via High-Speed Camera (there are probably other apps, but this is the one I'm using). I don't know if it works with the other ROMs (and I don't see why it wouldn't), so someone else will have to get back to you w/that one.
question 3.
an idiots guide for what can be accomplished by rooting and how to do it, such as turning off adds, removing or moving stock programs and settings etc.

If you want to remove stock apps, then you can download Titanium Backup (or an app that's similar) and uninstall them that way.

The short answer here is stick with stock. The rear facing camera has been a problem on every ROM, except stock based roms. There are some workarounds but If you need good quality photos from rear cam then stock based is your only solution...
Thank you both for the info and direction.
I know to keep something stock is to keep it original.... but what do you mean stock based? an original ROM that has been stripped but the core and drivers are the same?
and what stock based ROM would you recommend for my GP5.0 yp-g70 that might give me a little better performance and nice appearance?
also I haven't had a chance to explore all the information yet, but can someone give me a link to a good source of direction on how to use titanium backup, or some other app to back up my device, OS and apps so if I should get something not to my likeing I can revert back to original.
and thanks again for no flaming

Scroll down to "5.0 (stock based)"
"Stock based" simply means a modified stock ROM. "stock" sort of meaning; a ROM from the manufacturer. I haven't personally tried any of the stock based ROMS. They may have issues. Im only saying that it is the stock and stock based ROMS that have the potential to have a fully working rear cam. You have to read in each post to find out if there are issues.

Be surprised !
The definitive Best Customizable Rom for the best tablet Galaxy Note 10.1 2014 Edition. This is for P600 for now......
Thank you if you want to buy me a beer, I need one after these last few weeks fighting with framework and Aroma.
Don't post the link for the rom anywhere else that XDA but you can refer to the thread.
Features:
Deodex
Zipalign
Busybox
Knox free
Init.d
Supersu 2.37
Base P600UEUCNK1 (latest build)
Xluco kernel V3 Stable
Better Keyboard
4 way multi windows
Floating Multi Windows
2 themes Stock and Flat UI from Pro
You can go to very slim to any soft you want to have
Too much add to tell, just install and go to Aroma
Many Build Prop Tweaks
Ad /Data/app feature in the Rom
NitroX Sparks edition
Huge Aroma Installer
5 launchers including Magazine (probably buggy but work) , Apex, Nova, stock and stock fast
I added the soft Reboot Menu that works very well
I warn you this build is very very fast. And Battery life is dawn good. Don't install too much Samsung and Google stuff; make a good selection, you can always go back in Aroma.
Instalation
To install place the zip file in your external SD reboot in Recovery mod.
Flash zip file and follow aroma installer, use the touchscreen gently as it is very sensible and you can install something you don't want.
You can dirty flash if you want but I suggest backing up before and try.
I don't recommend that of course, better Factory reset and wipe caches.
Let the rom settle for a while.
Rom do not affect wifi recovery.
Don't tell me hand writing recognition don't work, Install languages first.
In the first Aroma page if you install Gmail Exchange as only mail don't install Gmail on the Aroma Google apps applications.
To put more apps in Multi-windows use Wanam Xposed.
To enable Nitro:
Open Terminal
SU
MENU
Option 3
1
1
To do: Some cleaning in system and Aroma descriptions.
You tell me what you want for V3 (Already have some nice ideas).
Bugs:
I hope a few to keep me busy.

I am not a developer but will update and try to include some more features as much as I can like kernels and else.
This Rom made me think at something; I really didn't have a lot of knowledge how to build from stock so I really learned a lot, so I maybe write a tutorial before I forget for those interested. Not hard but you have to follow the steps. Decompiling framework and recompiling to change the title is not like eating a piece of cake. That was challenging.

Yes. So you are not interested in trying to remove any bloat?
Rom is uploading in Google drive now.
Maybe further this week I debloat. What nivel are you looking at for the removal extreme or medium?
I'm interested in it. I'll debloat, myself. Thanks!

:good: I think I can post the link in few hours.
Yes I think we would all like a new Rom based on the new firmware. Thank you for your work.
I think the more you can leave the ROM full of bloat by default and provide options to debloat maybe in aroma?
I only say this because often users like a particular bloat app and it is easier to remove them after an install than it is to add them in usually.
Just my opinion. Thanks for the new ROM, when I get a moment I'll flash it on my tablet.
Thanks for your work. the more support we can get the better. best to take it slow and keep it stable. i agree on the debloat. there is actually a lot that i need for work. an aroma installer debloat might be best. but its your work so do what you want.

I just created a rom based on P600UEUCNI1 from September 9 2014
Tested on my P600 without issues. All is so smooth with this firmware.
Beta 1:
Deodex
Zipalign
Busybox
Knox free
Init.d
Supersu
Bugs:
You tell me
Pure stock nothing else, no debloat at all, I am learning and want to be as close as possible from ultimate stock.
I am not a developer but will update and try to include some more features as much as I can like kernels and else.
To do:
Update applications
Speed improvement
Debloat
Add aroma Installer
Kernel modification (Little difficult but will try)
Power Menu
I'm not responsible for any damage that happen to your device
To install place the zip file in your external SD reboot in Recovery mod and flash the Rom.
Do not forget to factory reset before flashing and I will suggest formatting data and clearing caches.
Rom do not affect modem or recovery.
Beta 1

Download fine here but I will upload with Mega in few hours
Next step is check out some "battery saver" and "performance" tweaks from Hyperdrive rom and see if you could incorporate them into this NI1 base rom. Xluco kernel is the best. This probably the kernel for reference.

The other thing I am always concerned about with tablets etc is that they are not always supported into the future. Having a rock solid stock ROM with all the original features intact means that long after Samsung abandons this device (sorry for being pessimistic haha) we will still have a really nice stock ROM. Some of my legacy devices are running ROMs that haven't been updated for years, but work perfectly because some nice dev made a stable and thoughtfully tweaked stock ROM.
I'm running this ROM on my tablet now, absolutely no dramas.
To those of you who are using this ROM after trying other custom ROMs, have you noticed any changes in battery life? Can you post details regarding which apps/games and/or kernel you're using?
Thanks!

Honestly there arent too many mods that i actually use even with everything offered in Hyperdrive. i think the biggest ones are being able to add more apps to pen window and multiwindow. being able to split them into 4 apps is nice but its not a 12.2 screen so i am really only using 2 at a time anyway. also have the 4 way reboot menu is always nice. other than that with speed and stability that is all i need in a rom for this tablet. of course totally my opinion. i agree with what you said about keeping it stable for when this is eol with samsung is important. it will happen sooner or later however i am sure we will get L at some point. hasnt even been a year. that would be outrageous.
C to F
How can I change the temp reading in the weather widget to read in F instead of C?
Nice Job
The Rom works well nicely done thank you for a current stock rooted Rom that we can flash to

You do know that you don't need Hyperdrive for 4way multi window? All you need is the app multi window plus and wanam xposed tool to add more apps to it.
As for the tweaks, I found some build prop tweaks and init d tweaks from Hyperdrive that I took and they work fine with this rom :good:
@enotar
Thanks for the rom, the only suggestion I have is for the Tab S UI to be made for this NI1 rom, currently it is only available for cnd3 roms if you look in the themes and apps section but if you could make that work with this it would be great :good:
