AFAIK no, but Kies or flashing the ROM via ODIN/Mobile ODIN(third post should help) should work just as well.

If I am not wrong, there is no way to root and keep ota, whereas you can keep kies update service (after kies update you would loose root though).

You won't be able to ota update as Samsung will have your phone as modified.

Will i receive the Updates via ota after rooting ?
tnx you all

If all you have done is rooting (no cwm or custom rom or kernel), then yes you can use kies and ota update. There is a high possibility that you will lose root after the update though.

I'be installed only cwm. So there's not a chance i can use kies until i reverse the root?
Thank you in advance for your help!
You can use kies for syncing, etc but not for updates. You need to be completely stock for that.

Once the update comes out it'll be on www.sammobile.com. All you'd have to do is flash through Odin

I rooted my Galaxy S3 the other day with the intention of installing one of the JB rom's out there. I thought as my S3 was not locked that the official JB update would be a little way off yet. Yesterday I find the official JB being pushed to my phone. It went through the update process and then said it could not update because my phone had been modified. I checked the rom version and it is now 4.1.1 so it seems to have actually updated everything apart from the interface which is still ICS.
Is there a way to get around this? If I do a factory reset will that wipe the root? Or can I do something to hide the root from the update?
All advice much appreciated.

Thanks for that. didn't realise the interfaces were the same. Was expecting a bit of a facelift but then I guess it's what's under the hood that counts.
It did say it couldn't update the software because the phone was modified so I am wondering what, if anything I am missing.
One thing I did notice pretty much straight away was the battery seems to be running down quicker. Could be my imagination of course but I will test it over the next few days to be certain.
flash any stock Rom and change csc

Rooting will not stop you from updating OTA through KIES. It wont update through direct OTA.
Update via Kies or download the DLJ4 and flash with odin. You will have the same result
Cheers

Hello everybody,
my gt-i9100 will receive (short-run hopefully) the update to jelly bean but i have a couple of questions to avoid trouble.
At this time i have ics 4.0.3 official with root and modified recovery (not CWM). I have some root apps installed as "system app" like Android Lost, xposed framework and xposed tweakbox. I know the update will erase all my data (full update not value pack) but there will be problems installing this update with these root apps pre isntalled?
Thanks to all :cyclops:
It should cause any problems as the rom will erase all user apps and root.
What method are you planning to use to upgrade.
Kies or doing yourself through Odin.
As a precaution you could do a factoery reset before connecting to kies or flashing with odin. That way there will be no problems with stray aps.
i think i will use kies.
so i will not have issues having a custom recovery?
after upadte i must root again the device, right? if yes wich root use?

So my S2 died the other day and I went to buy a i9300. Now I've been searching about S3 rooting and I've found conflicting info on this.
So when I first rooted my old S2 I did it with a temporary CWM that disapeared ofter reboot stayed in stock with stock kernel and kies was able to update my firmwsre without deleting root. I actualy updated from 2.3.5 to ICS via kies without removing root or loosing it after.
I was wondering if the same could be done with the i9300 I want to remain stock for now and don't want to replace stock recovery with CWM. Is there a temporary CWM for S3 so I can push the SU binary to system part without flashing anything over stock?

Thats why i opened a new thread to see if someone had some new info on it.

CF-AUTO ROOT. Installs only the SuperSU app. Does not install custom recovery. Dunno about updates, though. I think it supports OTA.

Use CF Auto Root from here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1957273 Download Odin and the CF auto root for your phone all instructions are on this thread
You can still update via Kies as long as everything is kept stock even though its rooted but you wont get any OTA updates that wont work

Hey man. I think u should use triangle away. Then unroot.. then format. Then wipe everything else.. then download some ROM or try kies firmware upgrade. That's how i got some updates. Actually custom ROMs are way better than stock and when ultimately or phone crashes, u can revive it using kies firmware upgrade.
