[Q] hy i am not able to Backup Using CWM Recovery - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi !
Guys please help me out !
I have a CWM Recovery 5.0.2.8 and when i try to backup my rom using backup and restore... CWM starts doing the backup...It backs up system ...but when it shows backing up data...it hangs and gets stuck at the end of backing up of data stage ...
The phone restarts after 5 minutes ...
Backup is not complete
In order to confirm whether there is any fault in the recovery i told some other persn t test it.
But he was successfully able t backup ... and the recovery showed backup complete message..
im using karbonn a21
Please help where is the fault !!!???
HELP PLEASE TILL NOW I CANT FIND ANY PROPER SOLUTION TO THIS !!!

RE:
check if any of the following holds true, then please correct it:
1. your phone might not be rooted (or rot access is not given to CWM)
2. you may have the wrong/corrupt clockworkmod (always check md5 checksum for verification).
if the problem persists, try the following:
-> run 'fix permissions' under the utilities menu of CWM recovery
-> reboot into recovery mode and do a cache/user data format.
hope that does it.
Cheers.
(Thumbs up if it works)

My phone is rooted!
what does fix permissions do exactly ?
ive tried factory resetting and then taking the backup but no luck !!!!
still gets stuck at the end stage of backing up data !

RE:
fix permissions, as the name suggests, fixes all the root permissions (if anything ever went wrong during rooting).
again, have you verified the md5 checksum of the cloclworkmod you downloaded?

for example, say i downloaded a galaxy S II cyanogenmod for my Karbonn A7 from: download.cyanogenmod.org/?type=stable&device=galaxys2
you can see the md5sum written there.
after you've downloaded the mod,
you can check it's md5sum again by following this thread: androidforums.com/htc-droid-eris/138831-verify-your-files-md5-checksums.htm

the md5 is not related to CWM.
it's the code generated for any specific file and is used to check whether a downloaded file is corrupted or not.
check it here: md5summer.org/help.html

2nd : You need some files to check the md5 sum of . Which files do i check the md5 sum of ??
EDIT : I have the correct CWM fr the phone ! Some other person tested it on his Karbonn A21 and he was succesful in taking backups !

I would try a different SD card. If you don't have one, try borrowing the friend's for whom your version of cwm succeeded. To be safe, you should make sure that there are at least 3GBs free space.

just save as .txt then change the extension to md5 using file explorer or similar.
if you long press on a file in file explorer it should popup with some options. Select rename and change the extension from txt to md5

**SOLVED** nandroid backup MD5 issues... desperate here :(

Hi guys,
I currently have a Zopo ZP300 phone
I have no issues getting CWM to install or work, but when trying to create a rom backup things start to go funny.
Firstly, the backup takes hours to complete.. 2~3 hrs.
- I end up with :
boot.img approx 3.8 Gigs in size
cache.ext4.tar approx 17kb
data.ext4.tar approx 334 MB
recovery.img approx 3.8 Gigs
system.ext4.tar approx 386 MB
Secondly, when the backup completes, i am greeted with "Error while generating md5 sum"...
I have factory reset the phone, i have wiped all caches, Dalvik etc, etc... no luck.
I have also tried Terminal Emulator to generate a MD5 and end up with nandroid.md5 of 0 Kb in size which is useless..
Anyone ??
Get 4EXT recovery and you will never have any sort of problems installing or updating custom roms. Its free, constant updates, touch based interface, and easier to use than clockwork.

Ok.
I tried again to make a backup, but again i get "could not generate md5 file" error.
So now i tried to make md5 using ABD and md5sum command, but i get "sh: md5sum: not found" error.
I also tried terminal emulator with same result..
Now what do i do ? Why do i get "not found" error ?
Is there another way to make md5 ?
I really need to make a reliable nandroid backup...

Recovery might be generating a corrupt md5.
Ok try this:
Code:
cd /sdcard/clockworkmod/backup/XXXXXX/
rm nandroid.md5
md5sum *.img > nandroid.md5
This should do the trick because the md5sum file must be named nandroid.md5

Now, as i type, i started a recovery process to test, and so far so good.

[SOLVED] Can't restore EFS from backup

Problem solved!
**********************
I think my problem happened because a flashed a ROM with MG4 baseband, and then flashed UltimaROM with another baseband which caused my baneband to corrupt.
I tried to flash Stock ROM and install different baseband but non of this worked.
finally I flashed BTU stock ROM (Which comes with MG4) but the problem still here.
Then I installed root, deleted the efs folder and replaced all the files with the files in the backup - restart and everything is working! my IMEI returned to normal.
**********************
Original question
Hello devs,
I have Siyah kernel which auto backup my EFS, i have backup named "efs_28Aug2013-1852.tar.gz"
I want to restore from this backup because I lost my IMEI when I flashed UltimaROM
I renamed it to "efsbackup.tar.gz" and put it in the root of the sdcard
then I started adb shell & run the code
Code:
su
umount /efs
mke2fs /dev/block/mmcblk0p1
mount -w -t ext4 /dev/block/mmcblk0p1 /efs
busybox tar zxvf /sdcard/ efsbackup.tar.gz -C /
I granted ADB shell root access
then i went to recovery and run the command (because I can't run umount /efs while device's running it gives resource busy message)
However when I run the first command "su" in gives me this message
Code:
/sbin/sh: su: not found
so I skipped to the next command
but I get the message
Code:
umount: can't umount /efs: Invalid argument
Please guys any help appreciated

I've backup my efs with adb but how do you have a file on tar format, i've got a file on .img, it's normal ?
There's about nine different ways to backup the efs, .img is fine but a little on the large side at 20mb. A .tar of the same is only 5mb.

Go to recovery, factory reset.
Get the phone to boot, unpack the .tar file and follow the instructions in the OP.

make a backup of your own rom.

there is a folder... i think twrp
in there there will be a backup folder
in there, there will be another one... pretty cryptic ... for me its something like DHSFSFS01

copy the folder of the rom from this thread to DHSFSFS01 or what its called on your phone...

[Q] MD5 Mismatch when Restoring backup

Hello Everybody,
I'm new to this forum and I hope posted this in the right section.
I have a Coolpad F1 TD-SCDMA. Today I flashed a custom ROM but I want my original ROM back.
So I wanted to restore the backup I earlier made today. When I am in CWM and choose restore it gives me: MD5 Mismatch!
I went to check for it in the directory but i didn't see any .md5 file.
Here is a guide for a similair problem, but since I am new to this and as he said in the topic: he ported it for One V. I am not sure if it will work.
I hope someone can help me with this.
Thanks in advantage!

Just tried it when typing in: 'adb shell' in cmd I get: 'error: device not found'.
Drivers are installed I think, I can see the files on my phone of my SD and emulated SD card.
Any suggestions?
Edit: It WILL find my device when turing on Mass Storage (MTP) instead of charging only.
I tried this using MTP.
Code:
# cd /sdcard/clockworkmod/backup/2014-10-08.08.47.17/
# rm nandroid.md5
# md5sum *img > nandroid.md5
Then I went back to CWM to restore the backup but still the MD5 mismatch.
Edit:
I wonder how this MD5 mismatch error even started.

Did you start with adb shell while connected in MTP? Did you look with a file manager to see if it is creating the md5 file? Did you try Method 3 with busybox? As far as what causes it, it's explained in the first post of that thread.

Thanks for the response. First I started try with charge only. When that didn't work I start with adb shell whil connected in MTP.
Yes, but unfortunatly it isn't. No, did not try method 3 yet.
But I did try this. It is the same method but without adb. But as you can see in the other topic:

Code:
No such file or directory
Did it like 3/4 times now and I'm pretty sure I did not make mistakes when typing.

Looks like this (third paragraph) is the problem: Not enough space to finish the backup. I will install the sotck rom shortly and try to restore the data.
