[Q] Phone getting warm with light usage - HTC Droid DNA

Hi all. Long-time lurker, first-time caller.
I'm digging this phone, but I've noticed that it gets uncomfortably warm (screen and back) during most any usage. It's fine on standby. I'll notice it after less than a minute of web-browsing, when streaming from subsonic, during calls sometimes, almost anytime its on. Is that normal? I'm coming from an iphone 4, and the last android I had was as the original Incredible. Is this just how new high performance phones run? FYI: I've got a TPU case that eliminates the problem, but I prefer going naked.
It's unlocked and rooted, running nova launcher. Happens regardless whether I'm using data/wifi 3g/4g.
EDIT: I should note that it's not "hot" exactly. Warm enough to make your palms feel like they need to breathe after 30 seconds or so though.

I don't have mine yet, but I've read here that using launchers other than Sense can cause performance issues. Perhaps the phone is pulling double duty trying to run Nova while still having elements of Sense going too.
You could troubleshoot this pretty easily. Try using just stock Sense, and see if you still have the temp issue.

I ran go launcher ex for a little bit and I noticed the same.. Not saying it was for sure the cause... But I did notice the phone getting hot more often

I've only noticed it getting hot if I'm playing games. Otherwise it runs pretty cool.

I am running Nova and have absolutely no issues with the phone getting warm. A warm temperature means the battery is being discharged at a high clip. A launcher, unless absolutely borked, should not cause this on a regular basis.

as a stock phone mine has only gotten warm during game play. after i unlocked and rooted i tried factory rom which had apex launcher and had the same issue along with all broken google apps but i switched to ukb and all issues disappeared also i noticed all three custom kernels out at the moment keep my phone abnormally hot so it just depends i suppose

Running Hot?

My SG2 seems to run quite hot when doing pretty much anything that requires the screen to stay on, particularly the upper half of the device. I notice the screen itself is quite warm too but according to SetCPU the CPU doesn't go above 38-40 degrees.
Also, it might be my imagination but it doesn't seem to cool down until I do a reboot, suggesting it might be a running service.
Anyone else having a similar issue?
So no one has an issue with their device running hot?

Mine gets hot when i am gaming, or when its sat navving, but it cools down again once i stop doing whatever it was that was making it hot, but it does retain heat thus taking a while to cool.
The screen tends to get hot for me when i am using games/bright stuff, reading my book on there, black screen white text, it doesnt even get any warmer than it would from my hands.
The top gets warmer cos thats where the chips etc are (watch a teardown video, you will see the chips).
I've just noticed it getting quite a bit hotter than I would expect behind the camera (Not seen the breakdown, but I'm guessing thats where the CPU is) when I was playing a few games on it (Specifically Words with Friends and Angry Birds). Just wondering if this is normal in most peoples experience or if its going to burn the side of my leg off at some point?
It should be ok, i've gotten it to the point where touching the camera bit for extended periods of time would be very, very uncomfortable (think a hot, HOT bath) but that's only if you're doing something intensive, usually games.
Right, just been playing Gun Bros with it plugged into the charger, and not only did the battery drop while charging, but it was running at 50c and behind the camera is as hot as Sticks02 points out. Bit worrying really.
Mine still getting quite hot, and quite quickly when playing games. I notice the screen near the top is getting hot too, as well as the back near the camera. Anyone else's screen doing this?

I posted something similar on the modaco website lastweek.
1. Phone gets hot (top half only)
2. Then low battery warning message
3. finally complete shutdown of the phone
Now the phone tends switch of randomly and it's not even hot. I have the latest firmware installed.
Also I thought I'd mention that I did get the battery hot message once then the phone again shut down.
I think this is a software issue rather then hardware, time will tell.
Never had the phone switch off or the battery run down fast. Just the heat for me.

[Q] Anyone else's phone running hot?

I've been noticing a good amount of heat up by the camera during moderate use. I thought this was a CM7 problem since I had been on it since day 1, but I am now on UnNamed and the problem persists. After some googling it does seem that many other people are having this problem. Not on WIFI, and not in a poor signal area either. Just wanted to see if anyone had any leads as to the cause. What is a good app for monitoring CPU usage by app?
Yes, it may get a little hot but it isn't something to worry about as far as I know. I've gamed for three hours straight and not had any problems except for a low battery life!
yeah mine gets hot near the camera during use but i dont think its a problem
I use a battery monitor.
From what I've read, it will shut off for protection. I've heard that as long as it doesn't ever get too much above 130 F, you should be OK.
Now if it constantly stays high, there may be a problem. Mine stays around 80 F most of the time and the highest I've ever seen is 99 F but i don't game much or use my camera. One thing you don't wanna do is charge it while hd gaming or charge it in a hot car. My infuse reached 146 F one time doing that.

Somehow 'Words with Friends' caused my phone to really warm up a lot. More so than I've seen with any other situation and on numerous occasions. Luckily I suck at that game and uninstalled it...
Mine is cool unless i put a thick case then itll burn up

When I first got CM7 running on this thing, I tore through the market installing the apps I'm used to. When I was finished, I noticed that it was indeed a bit warm in the area you described. It wasn't hot enough to cause discomfort, just warm enough to note.
I notice when my phone gets hot in that area when it is around 30% remaining and I charge it. I also notice that when it is charging, it really isn't charging but battery is draining. When I got home and charged it at 30%, I left it sitting there for about 30 minutes and when I checked the phone again, it was at 25%. GPS and wifi was turned off. I decided to power down the phone and remove the battery for 5 minutes. I started working fine after that. I noticed it getting hot again today when I plugged it in to charge at 40% but this time it actually was charging. I am running stock rom but rooted. Should this be a concern?
Seems as though a lot of people are having a variation of this problem. Hopefully it is addressed soon.
The CPU will always get a bit warm if it's running.
If it's getting very hot when the screen is off, you've probably got some background task wakelocking the phone.
My phone's screen gets pretty hot when I run web videos/flash videos on HSPA.
Runs a tiny bit warm when i'm running pristine 3D Tegra games on it...otherwise no.

Constant data use on the TP

Well having bad luck with my new TP. Seemed that .21 update caused battery drain on my TP. Today I only used the TP for a total of 1 hour for sending email, few web pages and battery is at 14%. This no good for travel or to use on the road. It has been on battery for 10 hours, but out of the 10, only 1 hour has actually been on.
I do notice a few things. Even though screen is off, the right side top feels warm to the touch as if when you use the tablet. Now I am thinking something is running none stop. Any good apps to check this?
Also notice that even though I am in the home screen, I see the arrows in the wireless icon showing as if data is always going up and down. So this could explain the massive battery drain. My HTC Jetstream only does this when opening web pages or sending email, which the TP will do but keeps flashing as if is always sending something. I have restored 3 times already. Now I will restore and not install anything including my account to see if it is the TP that is defective.
Anyone seeing this with your TP? I am ready to take this tablet back.

could be .21 or could be battery is just bad. What does usage look like?
I am not having that issue at all. I unplugged mine around 7:30am on the 2nd and it is now 12:05am on the 4th and I am still at 36% with performance mode on most of the time. A lot of time has been spent playing Asphalt 6 even. Plus, my normal web browsing and just messing around. I do have a dock so I know that attributes to some of my excellent battery life but not an extreme amount. It is only said to extend it by 4 hours of use.

Seems like something else is causing the battery drain. Like I mentioned, the top right side back, you can actually feel it sort of warm, compared to the left or the complete back. I know that the back feels warm after you use it for a while, but shouldn't feel warm after sitting with screen off.
Too bad only used for about an 1 hour a few minutes today and just shut off on me as I was responding.
Id use CPU spy see if that shows anything weord but defo sounds as if a app is eating all ya battery up if u find nothing try flashing firmware next one down see what happens or couldbt u try a different kernel

Mine doesn't get warm and I still get about 6-8 hours as opposed to the 10-12 I got before.
I've been noticing that Maps/GPS always seems to be running even when I have GPS disabled.

Oem battery problem?

Okay so I'm switching from my incredible 2 and ordered a rezound and it came like 3 days ago and my 4g sim card hasn't come yet so the rezound hasn't even been activated. So one day I picked up the phone and it was really hot. I thought that was weird since the phones screen was off and it wasn't charging. I just want to know if its normal or not? I ordered a 1980mah slim acesoft battery just in case.
Many people have reported hot phones, but I myself have never had it get above 100. Check to see what is running in the background.
I can get mine to 114 easily just by playing music and surfing the web. Won't go higher though. I tried. And bad signal will cause it to overheat like a mother f'er. I have the extended battery and had 65% no signal, after only 13 hours with 20 minutes screen on time I'm at 37%. Its awful. Never had this issue with any other phone. Looking at the nexus or maxx currently as nothing I do improves battery. Prior I was on sprint with the evo shift. Single core always overclocked to 1.6ghz it was a rocket and only overheated when I really pushed it super hard. But never to higher than 109. This phone is just rubbish. Also to more directly answer your question yes it will become a pocket warmer at times for no reason. Im on slim rom with literally NOTHING syncing automatically. And it still heats up like its trying to do something.

I've noticed with my old dinc and this rezound that they will get hot as the battery gets very low.
My current setup with Newt's One X runs cool on my phone. The only time I see it heat up (105) is when I'm doing stuff in recovery.

same here
Seems like overheating Rezounds are more common than normal. I've never had a problem unless I'm playing an intense game.
If you put a case or skin on the battery appears to get hotter due to heat buildup and transfer. Make sure any case has matching holes the same as the battery cover. Just sayin.

[Q] Phone getting too hot?

Hello LGOG Owners, I got my phone last week and love it. It's one of the best phones out there and thanks to the dev community here, it can only get better - I have not rooted the phone yet - will do it when I get a free weekend.
To the question, I downloaded an audible book (shameless plug for one my fav author - Kevin Hearne's - Trapped - If you like fantasy fiction, you'll love this series) and noticed that the phone is getting super hot playing the book - I have some generic headset. The book has been downloaded to the phone so it's not streaming while I am listening. Overall, I noticed that the phone gets hotter the more I use it, and especially so if the screen brightness is above 50%. I have the ECO mode on as well for the most part. Anyone else notice the temp? Any advice?
It seems to me that this is just due to the material of the phone and the thickness, if you watch the actual temp it is not really getting hot at all just feels like it. I say solve it by getting a case.
^This. The glass is just transferring more heat to your hand then your used to. Bugged me out at first too. If your super worried put it in eco mode (basically an underclock).

What is "too hot?" What's "normal" battery temperature under load?
Too Hot!
I got mine up to 109 F the other day on power save with the brightness at 60% while playing a game, case didn't help in my case. I'm thinking it would have kept going up till it shut off, I can't imagine running all cores like that.

My phone gets about 160+ often. Hot is when the top half of your phone feels like my oil heater. I suggest if your on jellybean to root and use greenify. If you can use free gee I would install snow job and the 5.1.1 kernel. Watching 720p videos on my phone and 2 hours later still cold. I have an under volt too. My .02

It all depends on kernel settings. MEs defaults are good, but I'd suggest a newer ROM than SnowJB since we have our own stock jb which MEs kernel is built off the source of.
