[Q] CWM not loading after unlocked bootloader and rooting - Atrix 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi all,
I followed all the instructions and search the web and successfully unlock the bootloader and root the phone. I also use fastboot to install CWM but for some reason, every time I go to Android Recovery, it went into Android system recovery <3e> and not CWM. I tried flashing the CWM through the link provided in "[Answers] Solutions to Common Problems - Look Here Before Posting in Q&A", both CWM 5.0.2.0 and CWM touch recovery 5.8.1.8 and it still goes to Android system recovery <3e>.
I also tried using ROM manager to flash CWM and yest again it goes back to Android system recovery <3e>. I got the exclamation mark with triangle and the android logo when I select Android Recovery, and just hit volume up and down the same time to get into Android system recovery <3e>.
Am I missing something? Has anyone encounter this issue and can shed a light on my problem? Thank you in advance for reading my post and thank you XDA for the wealth of information.

I had the same problem. After some searching I found the following (I think here on XDA):
" There's a file in /system/etc/ called install_recovery.sh that may need to be deleted for the custom recovery to stick. You need root to remove it."
I did this...actually just renamed it, re- flashed CWM and was good to go. Hope this helps

THANK YOU sooo much for the tip! :good:
It works and I have the wonderful CWM now. Thank you again
This is a great tip that should be added to the "[Answers] Solutions to Common Problems - Look Here Before Posting in Q&A"

Any time. Glad it worked out for you. (as I am learning and trying to buy some more life out of my Atrix)

[Q] CWM stock Recovery causes boot loop ?

I have CWM installed internally from the 1 click app. I can boot into cwm recovery fine.If I then install stock recovery and boot into it, I get an error saying to turn off device and call BN support. Turn device on and I'm in endless boot loop cycle. I can get out of it but just wondering why it's happening. Thanks
Omg seriously? ... no, you CANT boot to stock recovery only CWM is the modified accessible to boot into so you can flash other ROMs and more. Now you have to try a system factory reset and a erase deregister(wipe data) you can try the faster method for a factory reset that is stickied here in general forum. If that doesn't work then you have to prepare a CWM to boot from a sdcard and flash a ROM from there. Read my FAQ is stickied too for farther information.
Have fun!

OK, Thanks I admit it was dumb. But just so I know, What is that button for ? "install stock recovery" and how is it used, for what purpose? You are very helpful. Thanks again
The stock recovery is so you can do a factory restore, so take veronica's advice to get a working nook back

stock recovery is the recovery that came with your device and you can't boot into it because it contains the factory restore, when you flash CWM the recovery partition containing your stock recovery is overridden by it, so if you flash your stock recovery back it will override CWM recovery and so you can't/should boot into it.
~ Veronica
I believe it is supposed to allow you to revert to stock 1.40 with all the B&N features available however I'm guessing based on Indirect's CWM flasher that the stock recovery gets knocked out and CWM takes it's place, although I could be wrong.
Veronica?
Edit: so I was kind of right.
So, If you flash stock recovery, then back out to settings and deregister device, what will happen ? Thanks

It should wipe all your data, cache, settings (/Data partition) like apps.

This just proves the point I made somewhere along the lines yesterday. Rooting and modification of any device just isn't for everyone. You MUST learn to read and comprehend what you read to move forward. There just isn't a lot more disheartening than checking the forums and seeing a thread started by someone with 5 posts asking what to do now? When in reality, you look around and you see their first posts went something like this:
1. I missed CM7 when it was posted, can someone send it to me?
2. I got CWM installed fine, but when I try to flash CM7, I get an error.
3. Nvm, I see now this isn't a flashable .zip.
4. I got CM7 booted up fine, but OMG <fill in some random app name> isn't working!!! I think I am just gonna go back to stock
5. <Welcome to this thread>
Learn to use the search function and learn to read. The last time I looked, there were 43 pages of comments in the CM7 ROM thread. (not counting those that have already been cleaned out) and I have read them all. Probably close to twice. Same with the development thread.
It is my opinion that this thread should be merged with This One as the symptoms seem the same.
With this said I can understand why some users are having issues understanding Indirect's "Recovery Flasher".
I would think that if you Restore and attempt to Reboot into Stock Recovery that the device should at a minimum reboot to the Factory Rest screen. Perhaps it should just reboot and restore the stock firmware without prompt, but either way it should not cause a boot loop, blank screen, etc.
IMO, if the "reboot recovery" button was only meant to be used while CWM was installed, then it should be greyed-out when the Stock recovery occupies the recovery partition.
(BTW.... Is it CONFIRMED that the replacement recovery is 1.4.0)?
(BTW.... Is it CONFIRMED that the replacement recovery is 1.4.0)?[/QUOTE]
It should be because it is the first version that the NT came with and the one that most people use apart of CM7.

Yes the stock recovery is 1.4.0. I tested this.out a little bit ago.

[Q] Cannot get Clockworkmod Recovery on my rooted SIII

Okay I've rooted my phone using this method http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1701770. All in all it went well I got my phone fully rooted and everything works fine however when trying to get a full nandriod backup I found that I didn't get Clockworkmod recovery which should have happened. After trying the root method a few more times i noticed in the video @3:43 onwards it shows the cmw recovery symbol for a while in the video however on my sIII it just pops up for a few seconds and then disappears only to be replaced by Andy (the android guy) with a revolving diamond shaped mesh around his stomach. Now when I enter recovery mode the backup/restore option is not there instead I only get :reboot system now, apply update from external storage, wipe data/factory reset wipe cache partition and apply update from cache. (Another note I do not see the ClockWorkMod Recovery 5.5.0.4 - v1.4 when in recovery mode at the top of the screen as I should instead I see android system recovery <3e>)
Any form of help would be greatly appreciated! Also if you need a video of what happens when I root I can try to upload a video or at least a photo
The original method works best .
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1695238
Otherwise ask in the method you used thread .
jje
Will it be safe enough to do so? like I'm rooted now so will anything happen if I try the original method?
No, using ODIN is always fine so long as you don't go ticking boxes you shouldn't.

okay ill try it in a sec will post on how it goes
Nope didnt work
Okay tried again didnt work tried without sd card still the same result =[
anyone got an ideas?
What are you doing to get to recovery? Your not using rom manager are you?
Sent from my GT-I9300 using Tapatalk 2
no I'm using the cwm manger app and tapping the recovery mode. However when I first open the app a pop up appears it says: This version of CWM Manager should be used with CF-CWM v1.1 or newer. It appears you are running a different recovery. Various features have been disabled.
The .tar file I used was version 6.2
Go to the cwm thread, download the file and flash that in ODIN.

this one? http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1684535
Tried that hasnt worked I think I found out what the problem I dont have any recovery on the cwm app on the top it says cwm manager v3.60 the it says current recovery: but there's nothing after the colon
Okay Fixed it!
If anyone else is experiencing this problem go to http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1695238 download v6.3 and do just do the same steps detailed.

[Q] Unable to flash custom ROM

I did find a lot of threads but i didnt get any answer to my question.
I was using a 2.3.6 stock Atrix 4G. I decided on getting the cm9 so i unlocked the bootloader using the following link http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1182871
as i am using the newer version so i was advised to run option 1 of the script( click the link to see the script) and then option 3. I did option 1 and then my phone got stuck in unable to boot and then i ran option 3 and just pressed enter and my phone booted. So i didnt advance on the script and closed the script. Now my phone says UNLOCKED at the m logo while booting.
And then for rooting i used the following link http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1769497
i did get some errors while using the coding( as i had typo error) but then after two reboots and trying i got the success on my cmd window.
but i didnt get the same command promt text as upndwn4par( see the link) got. Still i anyhow got success. I checked my apps and super user was indeed sitting there.
After unlocking and rooting i downloaded rom manager and also downloaded cm9.zip file into my sd. Then pressed flash CWM and then also made a backup for my stock ROM and then pressed download from sd card on rom manager , then it asks cleear cache dalvik and backuo. I checked all and then my phone reboots and gets stuck in the ANDROID GUY with an Exclamation mark inside a triangle. I also tried reboot with recovery in ROM manager but the same screen.
I have mentioned all my steps. So please guide me where or what am i doing wrong?
please help , cause moto ditched me and i want to ditch moto's software.

I don't think recovery is installed properly. Try to fastboot flash recovery.

There is a boot.img file that goes with Viper (see the site). You must install with ADB (fastboot flash boot boot.img) or flash with "Flash Image GUI" that you can download from the market. Failure of wifi after installing a rom or kernel must be >99% due to wrong boot.img file for the kernel modules packaged in the rom or kernel you're installing.
Help extreme noob at it again

Wow, that's tough. Well it's hard to delete all the "sd card" data. If you have TWRP, go to advanced -> file manager and see if you have files. Most likely the viper download is still there in the download folder. If so, do the following:
1. In TWRP press wipe -> factory reset.
2. TWRP -> install -> download/viper zip file -> follow instructions.
3. You probably won't have wifi after install initially, but everything else should work.
4. After you do the ROM setup:
a. Go to the viper thread and download the boot.img file under the viper download link
b. Install flash image gui from the market. Use it to install the boot.img file. Ignore the caution potential issue warning. Flash the file and reboot. All should be well.
5. Be careful!:good:
Well go to your computer and then if do you have the sd tools from HTC, then cppy there the roms files and the boot .img,
Then go to dos command prompt in windos and find the files
Run the recovery and type in sideload
Fastboot flash boot boot.img
Then go to recovery again and flash the rom and thats it

OK, so you do need adb then. Assuming you have it installed rather than just a all-in-one kit, here's a good description of procedure: forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1667929
If you don't have adb installed, you need to install it.

Troubles in recovery mode

Hey guys,
I recently updated my S3 i9300 with the new JB4.3 XXUGMK6 and rooted it with no problems at all, did root check etc. My apps that require root all work.
However, when i go to CWM and boot in recovery i get a broken android with a triangle and exclamation and blue text (hopefully u guys can see the attachment). This has never happened before, i have check other threads but have not found an answer yet.
So i guess my question is... why is it doing this?
Fanx guys
That is stock recovery not cwm and nothing wrong with that stock recovery..if u want cwm recovery flash philz recovery

Ah ok, but normally when i hit the boot in recovery button on CWM it takes me to another screen. but as u sed, it took me to the stock recovery page. why is this? also the same if i turn off phone and press up key+power button. or could it be that my version of CWM is not compatible with this version of JB???

You are correct. I need to flash a new recovery, the one i had already installed is not compatible with JB4.3. i wouldn't have noticed if you didn't suggest it. i flashed JB via odin, so my data was't wiped. rookie error. the broken android threw me off. fanx for the quick responses.
