hey, i got the sgs2 (i9100) and a stable cm9 for a while now. but i have problems with my 3g connection. i believe it is not my carrier, because i got two simcards (germany and austria) and the problems are the same: i got a (almost) full cyan connection bar with "H" or "3G" in my statusbar. but there is no connection (browser, yt, fb, etc...). only if i turn on flightmode, wait for a while and then turn it off again, then i have 3g for a while. but eventually it will break off again.
so i thought maybe it will help when i change the modem version. but for that i have a few questions:
- is "baseband" in settings/about the modem version?
- do i flash modems also via the recovery as i do with the rom?
- does the modem-sw come with the rom?
- where do i find modems and how do i know which are good (for me)
and while i am on it:
- do i flash kernels also via the recovery as i do with the rom?
- does the kernel come with the rom?
- why would i need another kernel?

yes baseband means modem.
You can flash modems through odin or recovery depending on which version you have downloaded.
Yes, the developer adds a modem to his firmware usually it is the best one for his region of the country as he is testing his software.
Look around of the thread posted about and check for your country code to find the best for you.
Yes, you can flash through odin or recovery.
yes, kernal comes with rom.
Some people prefe rcertain developers kernals, so they chane from stock kernal, also kernals for 4.0.4 and above have a brick bug issue in stock. Custom kernals have disabled this bug.
cm 9 safe because it is an older version. most popular kernals are siyah or dorimanx and some otherts.
Current leaked jb version need philz that is the only kernal beside stock that will work for the firmware.
thx for the link!

yes, if make an nandroid back-up modem is included and will be restored. If it is an older nandroid back up. it will have the version of the modem that was in use at the time of the back up.
thx!
No it won't, modems don't backup with a nandroid.

now i'm confused
Haha, it's ok, pretty much everything get backed up with a nandroid but the modem (baseband) doesn't. Some roms install a different modem for you, others don't. Have a look at this thread, they have a list of flashable zips (cwm) of different modems and explanations. U might also want to read about the RIL and try the app GetRil, but apparently it can cause issues.. I don't fully understand it myself yet

should I upgrade to official ICS before trying out other roms? or is gingerbread stock a better launching pad?
can we downgrade from ICS?? (I'm assuming b/l is unlocked)
is there a baseband app for SGS-II (like my defy has) -=or=- will I need to manually copy it over?
PS - if it is recommended to officially update... is KIES or CWM better for this?
T.I.A
stock gb for now later u can upgrade to anything
1) Not necessary. Follow whatever instructions the particular rom you want to use has.
2) Yes, you can downgrade from ICS to GB. Simply flash whatever GB rom you want to downgrade to.
3) Baseband app ? I presume you mean modem. Flashing any rom shouldn't change your modem, and many of the GB modems work just fine with ICS I.E modem/baseband is independent of rom/kernel. I'm still using the modem I used with GB, essentially unless you have issues with connectivity/data/calls/SMS that you can't pin down on your carrier's network, no need to change your modem. In saying that, modems are CWM flashable (you can also flash them in Odin), so if you do have connectivity issues & want to try other modems it's pretty easy.
Now, if you meant something else by 'baseband', explain what you mean & I'll try and answer whatever questions you have around that.
@ MistahBungle
On the defy your radio/baseband/modem/yabba_dabba_doo
does change when changing rom - defy has an app for restoring the above...
as it's all android, I'm sure I can do it manually on the S II
so no-one see's official ICS update as beneficial?? Surely it's less buggy than a CM9 -=or=- a MIUIv4!
PS - which recovery should I flash for I9100T??
PSS - Think I'll try MIUI 2.3.9 for a start after I get bored of stock
OK so the modem/baseband is the same thing. On SGS2, roms normally don't come with a modem (I don't think I've seen a single one that has a modem included), these can be changed/flashed independently of the rom/kernel you're using. Again, my advice is if it ain't broke don't fix it; if connectivity/data is fine with the modem you're currently using, no need to mess with it. Yes, you can change them manually yourself easily; most modems are CWM flashable & take a minute to flash.
Whether official ICS (or even a custom ICS rom) is a 'step up' or not depends on how you experience same, I.E. YMMV (like any rom or kernel really). Only way to find out is to try one, which is pretty simple once you've rooted your phone; you can backup your current setup in CWM then try out whatever rom you want. If you find you don't like it, takes only a few mins to restore your backup.
If you use CFRoot to root your phone, it installs CWRecovery by default, which makes backup/restore & flashing roms/kernels/modems a snap. If you do choose to use CFRoot, read the whole first page thoroughly, it's very simple if you pay attention/follow the instructions.
was going to root via 'new' method i.e. .bat file - suppose to root all S 2 variants... it doesn't install CWM but I can do that via Odin...
you use touch recovery??

Up to you, use whatever method you're comfortable with. Touch recovery ? Have used it when I've used Siyah, but not at the moment as I'm using CM9 kernel. Happy to use it if it's part of a kernel/it is good, but personally can't be arsed installing it seperately if it's not.
@JJE Roms I've used haven't had modems (Yes, stock does.) I.E GB Galnet Miui & CM9 don't.

All GB custom roms i have used have modems likewise every ICS custom rom.
Galnet Miui & CM9 only ever tried once so you are probably right for those two . But apart from those sort of builds i have never come across one without a modem . last ten ICS builds i tried have a modem .

i have a 9100t telecom phone, but 2degrees as my provider so i flashed the baseband 9100tdukf4 to get better batterylife with vodafone and 2deg frequencies.
what i did with mine first, i flashed siyah 2.6.14 kernel with odin then used cwm to backup my telecom rom and then flashed away
will manually backup modem ;-) just in case is needed for custom rom...
now another Q: what's all this talk I've been seeing of an internal SD? ^^
How does this affect modding i.e. backing up, restoring nand, flashing roms etc?
well... well... well... 3 holes in the ground ^^
had my 1st soft brick
tried rom manager SII recovery flash (just wanted to see what it would do... just in case it worked) soft-brick...
then flashed CWM via Odin (source galaxy2root[dot]com)
& all is good...
O/C'd to 1.4Ghz with Tegrak & Linpack giving 55+ MFlops!!
Use stock for a wee bit & then I'll get into roms...
PS -Juwe11 RAM script working a treat ;-)
rom manager from the market? i should of said not to use those , i hear they can softbrick the s2.
disable your anti virus while flashing too, nod32 stopped my flashing, soft brick.
Hi all,
I installed PA v2.5. Everything worked well except my phone network signal. It is not detecting any signal. Did every thing i could do. wiped system/factory reset, wiped cache partition and dalvik cache. Fixed permissions. Formatted system. tried installing rom a number of times. Changed kernels from stock kernel to siyah 4.1.3 and 5.0. But none of the method worked. Please suggest the way i can get my phone signals as without network signal, it doesn't remain a phone.
Have you tried flashing another modem? You can download a modem here.
Why don't you try to install an other kernel? Different from siyah and stock... As kernels define how hardware work...

You installed siyah 4.1.3 with PA 2.5? They're not compatible and the phone shouldn't even have booted.
Anyways, if you're not able to get a signal, your modem has probably changed. You can check if the modem currently on your phone (settings>about phone) is the same as the one you originally had. ( I assume you've noted down your original modem details somewhere. And flash that modem from the link mentioned above. It should work

so please suggest some other kernel that works fine with pa2.5. I had installed i9100DDLPA base version originally. and now i have flashed it. still not getting signal. sometimes it appears but disappear next moment. it happens frequently. Now i have switched to stock ics 4.0.3. but i want this rom. i flashed resurrection remix and found same problem. but flashing stock modem fixed it. But its not working with pa.
Use siyah 5.0 or dorimanx 7.4 (or higher if there's a later release.) I think the siyah dev gokhanmoral has blocked siyah 5.0 downloads for some reason, so use dorimanx 7.x for now.
Flash the PA ROM, it'll automatically install the default kernel its using. You can install dorimanx after that. And then if necessary, the modem that works for you. Also you can use the getRIL app to match your radio and baseband. May help.

Hi, i love PA too but we have the same issue. Not exactly the same though. I get signal when i boot my phone, i get an H signal (the highest i could get before the issue) but after flashing PA, it drops to E only after about 2minutes. Pls pls reply back if you found a solution. I have tried different modems and kernels already, verified that Siyah 5 is not compatible, tried DorimanX, same thing. Tried 2 different version of PA, no luck. Not to mention that i also tried another sim.
GetRil did it..
Hurraaayyy....
getRil app solved the problem. It gave me the option of flashing modems which were matching my phones modem hardware. Thanks to all guys who helped me. Thanks a lot. Anyone having the same problem as of mine or any network related problem please give a try to getRIL app. May be it could work for you too.

hello fellow xdas
while back i had gotten my hands dirty with the CM10 project as i just couldn't wait for the official update! i learned quickly that i had serious problems with antenna/reception. i tried carious base bands (as recommended on forums) using GetRil/flash.Odin. this didnt seem to help, even though i would get better reception, my signal was unstable. In the process i tried other roms like JellyBam and had the same issue.
As this is my main phone and i do actually need to call with it, i went back to the stock rom i downloaded. but surprisingly i still have the same issue! GetRil also shows that i have incompatible RIL/baseband. this is what it shows:
RIL: I9100NELP2; I9100XXKI4
Baseband: I9100XXLPQ
FYI: i am located in the Netherlands and use T-mobile network.
so have i installed the wrong ROM or done something wrong in the process... ? does anyone have any experience with this? i much rather have CM10 but only if i can get to call normally once again?
thanks

The modem is independent of the ROM, mate. So it wont make much of a difference whether you install the radio on stock firmware or on CM10. You could try using the modems mentioned by zee54 with CM10 and seeing if it helps. Also, give it about a day or so..since the phone tends to take a while to get 'used' to a new modem.

The unstable signal or "RIL Crash" as it it called isn't actually caused by having an incompatible RIL and Baseband (modem). It is a more complicated issue which I don't fully understand myself. But what I do know is that it currently affects all customs roms that are based on CM10 and use the CM Kernel. So switching modems might help recude the frequency of the problem but probably won't irradicate it completely.
You should not experiencing this problem if you go back to stock samsung firmware. If you experience problems you might want to do a full wipe (Data, Cache, Dalvic-cache) before reflashing and fix permissions afterwards.
On a more positive note, I have found that using the Siyah Kernel with your custom rom does seem to eliminate this problem, or at least reduce it occurance to such that I have not noticed it happening.
So personally i would suggest that if you wish to go back to CM10 or JellyBam ROMs, then do so but also install the latest Siyah Kernel for the S2 from here http://www.gokhanmoral.com/
(Here's the XDA Thread for the Siyah Kernel - [KERNEL] SiyahKernel v4.1.5 (v5.0a2))
I am currently running CM10 with the Siyah Kernel v5.0b2 and it is working very nicely
great stuff guys... 2x thanks for both of you!
Zeey54, i just had Siyah v5 Kernal installed, installing the latest JellyBam right now! so lets see what happens. i was suspecting that beside the RIL/baseband there were other factors as i did not see any significant difference between them. but then again i dont trust my judgement on such issues as my knowledge is quite limited.
will send an update with the result after installation in a few min.

installed the BOLP7 modem, overall reception is much better! data connectivity is also better and faster. but i still have some periods which my receptions drops and goes back up, seems like radio/modem crash (if im right). dont know if that is due to the kernel or modem or ...?
the reason i went for BOLP7 modem was because the latest official stock rom from t-mobile Netherlands was I9100BOLPM_I9100TNLLP8_I9100BOLP7, so i thought that would be the best one to try!
will wait a little more to see if this improves as the modem settles.
4th official ROM too much coverage you please make a review ?

First of all, thank you mate for your hardwork and awesome utility.
I have a Samsung galaxy S2 I9100G , recently flashed jelly bam custom rom. I am based in Saudi Arabia, the reception is not clear and people complain that it is switched off or out of network. I tried calling with another mobile and i got a response that my mobile is switched off, at the same time i checked my S2 mobile , it shows the full signal of the network in status bar.
what should i do? Which modem should i flash. the getRIL shows RIL/baseband is matching (I9100GDDLP5).
cheers

Hello everyone,
It has been more than one year that I've been using Samsung-based custom ROMs on my S3, but now when I want to use an AOSP ROM, I can't make calls with them!
I've tried Cyanogenmod 10.2 (latest weekly) and SlimBean 4.3 (latest stable) and when I try calling someone, the call ends immediately. If I try opening the phone app -> settings -> Additional settings, I get a "Call settings error: Network or SIM card error". This does not happen when I use the stock ROM or a Samsung-based ROM (like Wanamlite or Omega, which I've used the most).
What should I do? I'd appreciate any help!

Maybe I'm just using the wrong ones?

Are you on CM based ROM? If yes you need modem without RIL.
EDIT: Sorry you mentioned that.
Hello everyone. I came up with the idea of making a colletion of basebands for I8730/T Models. I already have some installers scripted, with the basebands we most use. These zip files are flashable using a custom recovery You can expect some Odin flashable archives too sometime, as they are easier to make
I recommend using TWRP that you can find here (Now it is officially supported -> try this one)
Many thanks to @kotzir for this amazing version, I do not take credit of making TWRP, all goes to @kotzir
I8730:
I8730XWAMK1 (Our CM project is based on this one)
I8730XWANE1 (The last one ever made, also works with CM Project)
I8730XWAMC2
I8730XWAMD1
I8730XWAMI1
I8730XXAMB8
I8730XWAMB7
I8730T:
I8730TDUAMD2 (The only made for this phone, for Vodafone Australia)
Odin Flashable (with Bootloader updates) - These include bootloader pieces, and in my tests they didn't increase binary count
I8730XWAMK1 (Our CM project is based on this one)
I8730XWANE1 (The last one ever made, also works with CM Project)
These are flashed in PDA (or AP) button of Odin, not Bootloader button. If you do this in bootloader button, you will brick your phone

Many thanks very much appreciated:good:
Hey, I'm using CM 11 on my GT-I8730, the messages and phone calls are allright but I'm having problems with my GPS. Do you think that installing a baseband would be useful? If yes do I need to wipe my data and everything before installing it or I can install it without wiping anything? And which baseband would be the best?
Thanks a lot for the good work

Not really... Basebands are only radio images for the cellular data, not even wifi uses them. You can try to do it
I will recommend I8730XWAMK1, the first one on the list
First Prerooted Image
Released I8730XWANE1 Read all the important notes. Big thanks to @kotzir for letting me include his TWRP on this image. Check his work and donate him a beer, he is awesome
Install baseband

Our roms are made for I8730XWAMK1, I know some brazilian users who flashed I8730XWAMK1 and can get it to run there. I know that most European countries share similar basebands. Baseband is just a "firmware" for the cell phone radio (not FM radio, but cellular data radio). Flash it, you can flash it before the rom, between rom and gapps, or after. It doesnt really matter, since it is a different part of phone But before flashing, please tell me your current baseband, so I can make an installer for it, in case something goes wrong
Um abraço

Yes, everything working perfect.
Uma dúvida.A doubt. There is the possibility of installing the factory GPS software? Because the GPS is giving errors.

The GPS has nothing to do with Basebands. This is part of integration in the ROM, if you are using Ressurection Remix like me, GPS never worked. In CM13 builds, GPS worked before 08/07/2016, I believe
Bootloaders
Released I8730XWAMK1 and I8730XWANE1 odin tarballs. These include bootloader files and they don't increase flash counts You can update your bootloader, but this will also update your baseband, so be careful
I understand the I8730XWAMK1 is recommended to get rid of the "Fast sound" issue, but is it not specific to some region(s)?
I'm in the Netherlands (Western Europe), does that matter?

You can use I8730XWANE1. Works the same way.

I am from germany and just freshly installed TWRP v3.0.2 and Nightly 20170328. I have problems with calling. Echoes and everyone including myself have a very very deep voice, almost like a devil. Does any of these fix my problem?

Pardon for very late reply, yes they do fix the problem. I8730XWANE1 or I8730XWAMK1 should work fine.
Hey guys!
I am a happy user of CM13 on our phone, everything is working fine, thanks for all the great efforts!
However, when I try to switch to the new LineageOS system, the voice during calls will get az echo effect and also the mobile data connection is not working. I've flashed several baseband images (including I8730XWAMK1 and I8730XWANE1), even unrelated ones, but no success. Now I'm on CM13 with I8730XWAMK1, and it is perfect. I am from Hungary on the carrier named Telenor.
I would be very happy to use the latest LineageOS on my phone, but this annoying thing prevents me from it.
Do you have any clue about this?
Cheers!
