[Q] Power control (and more) intermittently unresponsive/slow - Sprint HTC EVO 4G LTE

I have intermittent issues with Sense-based roms, that I also experienced on stock that I'm wondering if anyone else has or has a fix for. Basically, sporadically the brightness toggle in the Power Control widget becomes very slow for the hardware to respond. Another issue that may be related as this happens with phone calls too, and I suspect the two may be related if it is the result of a background process being killed by Sense's own aggressive background process killing.
I'll hit the toggle and get immediate visual feedback (button effect occurs on the UI), I'll hit it a few more times with still no effect. Then, maybe 5-10 seconds later, the actual screen brightness will start toggling like crazy based on how many times I clicked it. Similarly in the phone app, if I dial a number and hit the button to connect, nothing happens. It just hangs out for like 5-10+ seconds then if I'm lucky actually goes to connect the call. This issue occurs sporadically, and seems to be independent of any load-based factors. I suspect it's a software issue as I don't experience anything of the sort under CM10... I would love to just stay on CM10 but I have a variety of radio-based issues with that that make this not an acceptable avenue (sadly).
Any help/feedback would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Those are all definitely Sense related problems and its from problems like yours that I switched to CM10. Can you go into further depth with your radio problem?

I tried the latest stable available from CM, as well as Deck's latest CM10 and have been experiencing the following symptoms that, unfortunately, despite how AWESOME my phone feels on CM10 over Sense, they're a deal breaker for me.
GPS Issue: For some odd reason the phone has trouble holding onto a GPS lock. For me it is specifically glaring in Google Maps Navigation where I'm driving along fine with a lock on my position, then Navigation will zoom out with only very broad accuracy (assume via radio-location) and say the message to the effect of "Looking for GPS" for 10-15+ seconds, reacquires a lock, holds it for maybe 1-2 minutes, then rinses/repeats. I did try the Sense GPS fix for this to no avail.
Phone Issue: I've read a lot of people having LTE issues w/ this, but with no LTE avail in my area this is the least of my concerns. My problem is that it seems to sporadically lose CDMA connectivity or something...the network status indicator switches to this right-aligned right triangle Just like this one in the attached image labelled "Emergency Calls". This occurs even if I switch the network to CDMA only... Not a HUGE annoyance except for when I'm on a call, it gets immediately dropped and I look at my phone and that damn icon is showing for network status, though it comes back to service within about 5 seconds. I have tried flashing the updated radios from themikmik, though that didn't seem to pacify the problem.
So yeah, that's why I'm back on this damn bloated Sense If you have any suggestions on how to fix either of these I would be forever in your debt

Honestly, I've run Sense 90% of the time since I got mine the first day it was available without these issues... I know some people reported contact lag but I've never seen it and most sense roms claim to have a fix for it built in.
I'm on the lastest stock OTA rooted and I just sat like an idiot mashing the brightness button for 2 straight minutes with no lag, just smooth transitions in brightness. Even the switch animation worked smoothly the whole time. You may have too many apps installed, or one particular app causing it.
Edit: Maybe you already use this but if not, try it. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1700211
You might even have a bad wipe,
Edit #2: And now after mashing it a bunch more times I finally replicated it lol.. Hmmm, I guess I was wrong. But its really a hard to replicate bug unless your using your power widget to turn your phone into a strobe light.

I know it isn't something everyone experiences; Though I'm more concerned with those who may have experienced, and have discovered a fix. I've tried virtually every Sense ROM in high consumption hoping this will go away including MeanROM, CleanROM DE 1.5 (was my favorite for a long time, but problem resurfaced there), Viper4G. This issue occurring in stock is what prompted me to try a custom rom to begin with.

I'm on MeanROM 6.5, and just did the same thing you did successfully. It's an intermittent issue that doesn't occur most of the time... but when it DOES occur it is extremely annoying. I will try to see if I can determine if another app could be causing this, but if there is it is just another thing that makes me hate Sense... changing screen brightness and initiating a phone call should be some pretty low-level API calls that shouldn't be dependent on or affected by other running apps... supported by the fact that I have never experienced this issue on CM10 or any of the other AOSP-based roms despite having all the same apps running.

Yeah, I user superwipe between every ROM install.

It's not a certain app in general. The main culprit is sense. That process/software causes the whole phone to be a lag machine regardless of what rom you have it on. Trust me I went through stock and viper4g(which I super wiped prior to installing) and still no prevail. HTC is going to have to fix sense BIG TIME to get rid of these lag issues.

Not sure what phone your using but on mine its running beautifully Meanrom is my favorite but I'm literally on stock right now with no lag... I can swipe through the fully loaded homescreens with no problems. Lag just isn't an issue... It's not the same as vanilla ics/jb but its definitely not laggy.

I assume he's referring to the idea that people use their phones for more things than just swiping between home screens... compared to CM10, basic things like launching apps feels like driving down the street with cement in your trunk.

Ok your right its not laggy but there is literally no multitasking and some other processes like earbud remote controls literally takes half a minute for the phone to process. Sense is just bad for your phone.

What is the real advantage of...THE LAG FIX?

I'm curious... Do you apply/wanna apply a lag fix because your device is actually lagging or is it just the thing to do nowadays? I ask because I have never found a need for one. The only lag I had on the Vibrant was when I first took it out of the box and even that was kinda tolerable. But as things are right now, I really don't see how my device could get any faster and if it could...why? Quadrant scores? What is the real advantage (if any) to having it? .02¢
Lag fix? Never have, never will!
High quadrant scores. Do you see the first thing most people mention when they install the lag fix?
"My quadrant score went from 200 to 2000!!!!!!!!" as if it was an indicator of actual performance.
No good, controlled tests have been conducted.
I don't use it. The one time I did, when it was included in the kernel with BLN, I had horrible battery life. Most people use it to get higher scores. The N1 would run circles around the Vibrant in terms of scores but when in real world testing, both devices are just as fast.
It's not just scores...
It makes your system a bit faster people nowadays do it without needing to and there's nothing wrong with that.
I run a lagfix and it has improved my speed and response.
Without making me lose any battery

Point taken, but looking at most of the threads in the Q&A section...it seems that the LF's do more harm than good, especially if you aren't too sure about what you're doing.
Lag fix? Never have, never will!
The lag fix circumvents RFS in many areas.
Galaxy S phones have terrible I/O performance. Notably Database Read/Writes and apps that work generally hit the storage often.
Run Touchdown on a Galaxy S phone without a lag fix and you'll see how sluggish that application runs due to RFS. The workaround is to move the database to the external SD Card (which results in frequent corruptions) or install a lag fix.
It also causes the phone to take an inordinate amount of time to boot up (Media Scanning... etc.) and lag randomly when applications sync and access the storage to write data. It lags when Installing and Uninstalling applications from the Android market as well.
If you think a Lag Fix is only to boost Quadrant Scores (those scores are bunk, anyways), then perhaps you're using a different phone in a Vibrant casing.
There are several applications littered with "laggy on my Galaxy S" in the market.
Also, there is a bug in the Samsung Android 2.1 kernel that breaks some applications. That's why there are apps popping up saying you need 2.2 on your Galaxy S phone to run them (Skype, Yahoo Messenger, etc.).
My Vibrant, both before and after JI6, was laggy to the point of not being usable - until I applied RyanZA's OCLF (I removed OCLF and tried voodoo but soft-bricked the phone in the process). I've never run the Quadrant score analysis - all I care about is usability of the phone, and after the OCLF was applied my phone became usable.
I tried Axura 2.0.x with no lag fixes and, while my phone was generally faster than JI6 pre-lag fix, it still suffered from lag in many user interactions (opening apps, launching email, reading individual emails, using gallery, etc.) I went back to stock + JI6 via ODIN, reapplied OCLF, and was happy again.
Are there different hardware revisions of the Vibrant that might account for the differences in user experience? I've seen many posts from users who claim they never had any lag or GPS problems, and many more (like me) who have been plagued with them.
Most of those users are fanboys and wouldn't admit it even if they fot one of those 5+ second lockups while making their post.

It's cause the phone is laggy. I don't usr lag fixes because I don't lile tampering with phones at the system level, regardless, but I have freezes several times a day and have even had my phone completely lock up on me a couple of times - requiring a battery pull.
The less services you have running, and the less apps that sync data runnimg, the less the lag is. The lag happens mostly when the storagr is used (background syncing can cause it, for example).
Yes, people with no twit/fb/reader apps/accounts setup, among other things may be totally fine depending on their usage.

It has made some apps actually usable.
Before the lag fix, the facebook app was basically unusable for me. Any action would have a 5-10 second pause before seeing a result.
Swipe to scroll, wait, click a picture, wait.
I think the facebook app was the worse for me because I did manual updates so every time I launched the app, it would be d/ling and writing while I was trying to scroll around and read stuff.
But in general, it has made my phone usable. Before I did the lag fix, I basically stopped using my phone because it got so annoying having to wait.
I've never run quadrant on my phone actually. I don't even really use root for anything. I did it primarily for the lag fix and the I changed my battery bar so that it's accurate. Everything else I'm happy with.
So, could this just be an issue that only certain phones have? Or, could some of it be mental? Like, if you hear enough ppl say that this is broken or that isn't working...you start to think that yours is broken also? I've never had an issue with gps...and I use foursquare and navigation on a regular basis. But everybody else seems to have broken gps.

I mean if I'm not looking at my facebook widget constantly, why should it be auto syncing?

I have 2 email account, syncmypix, weather apps & news updating every hour and i have never had any lag problems, even running on JI2 stock, much less ever had phone freezes. The ONLY time I had phone freezing was messing with those OC kernels, which I promptly uninstalled.
Let me ask people that run lag fixes this, when playing with the Vibrant at the t-mobile store, why did you choose buy it if you were experiencing this "lag", especially when it was running stock firmware?
edit: I also ran JFS lag fix for a day, but that drained my battery faster than a fat kid ate cake. It was not even noticeably faster either.

Its not mental its on every phone. Unless lagfixed/hacked u have the same fileaystem as us.
The home switchers and unofficial roms are morw mental due to placebo effect - some lag fixes aren't even that good, but people claim tenfold improvements due to placebo effect...

The phone T the store wasn't syncing a google and corp accoumt, plus facebook, plus twitter, and other apps. It simply wadn't prone to lagging, brcausr no user in their righy mind sets their **** up on a display unit just to test it.
Btw, "why didn't you test it for 10 min before you bought it" is getting old.
Their were no other good phones in t-mo when many of us broughy yhis. Couldn't just swap for a g2, mt4g, or hd7.
Many people thought an update would fix it, like the gps.

People should know what their doing before messing with stuff like that..
They have a forum here to ask all these questions but they do it themselves then when their phones screwed they ask questions...

I've done it on pretty much every phone I've owned, but like I said its not really nessicary, if anything its a slight stutter, but either way its not different than other android phones I've used (even my vibrant using a lag fix). its really just my preference to sync manually.

[Q] Capacitive buttons pushing themselves?

Hi all,
So this issue started really becoming annoying on my Fascinate with 2.2 but for awhile now, it's had this issue where I won't be touching any of the capacitive buttons on the bottom but the phone will start vibrating and acting like some of them are getting pushed. Now with 2.2, it's even more annoying because that sometimes makes it so when I go to turn off the screen, it takes a screenshot and makes the camera sound, sometimes at awkward times!
Anyway, are other people having issues with their buttons or have I dropped my Fascinate too many times?
And is there a way to disable the screenshot thing in 2.2?
Thanks!
PS. I should mention that I've been on a lot of different ROMs and had this happen, so it's not isolated to a specific one...
I've had the same problem on every rom including stock. It seems to only happen when I have a poor 3G signal, never happens while on wifi.
yeah it happens to me.
to get rid of the screen shot (i found out cuz it straight pissed me off) you go into system/app and delete screen capture.apk (not the exact name but it has screen capture in it)
that well help with that
Sent from my SCH-I500 using XDA App
I've had the same problem on multiple ROMs with and without WiFi connected. It seems to be my search button that gets triggered the most.
I haven't noticed it happening for the last few days with my current setup (Comm 1.2 + ED01 + Xtreme Green) but it was very random so that probably doesn't mean much.
I do notice that it happens more when my phone is in the media or car dock as well.

Also, I have had bad signal where I am today and I swear the buttons have been worse than usual @AlgorithmX

I've narrowed it down to poor 3G signal as well. I was out in the woods at a Retreat recently and had the capacitive buttons pressing themselves problem. As soon as I entered an area with strong 3G signals, it stopped. Now that I am at home with full 3G signal, I don't get it at all.
Sooo obvious question: why the hell would 3g reception affect the buttons?
Do you guys use mini info? I've noticed that it only seems to occur when I have that installed...
yea this happens to me all the time in a bad service area, bouncing around from 3g, 1x, and no signal. Running the evil fascination 3.4.2 with OTB 1.3 kernel. I don't think my setup is to blame i noticed this with the last superclean in the same bad service area. Not using miui info either
I had this problem as well but it never really seemed related to signal. It would sometimes happen on different roms and kernels I would use, but not all of them. I haven't had it happen while being on ED01 and the CommRom, so I'm not sure.
My other guess is that it might be the softkey press lagging and then pressing seconds after touching them.
I had the same problem with the back button. It happened across all ROMs and even stock. I exchanged the phone out and the new one never did it. Then i dropped that one and broke the screen and had it switched again and that one doesn't do it either.

I got mine about a week after launch.
You may be on to something. I got mine on launch day.
I got mine in early october I think and just today it started doing it so bad it made the phone unusable. it took me 6 tries to get into the xda app.
the issue started recently, and right now I'm in school and its never done it in here before.
I guess it may be linked to the recent connection issues? it has definitely gotten worse, I can't even watch a youtube video now.

Have always had this issue. It certainly seems to be more noticeable in weak signal areas. I relate it to like a computer freezing up and storing commands and then when it unfreezes a barrage of button presses is released further screwing up the queue for the CPU. (And obviously causing other issues, like "stuck" touches)
I've always found that on this phone when the radios are switching on/off or to another type of service. 3g/1x the phone lags out pretty good.
I have this problem since 2.2 update. It seems to be a known problem for samsung galaxy s. Other vibrant (I9000) seems to receive softkey firmware upgrade to fix the bug.

That's a great explanation and I think is near the mark. I think the phone lags in poor signal areas and stores up the button presses. Mine hasn't done it once now that I'm at home in a major 3g area.

Do you have a link to more information on a firmware fix for other galaxy s models? I had my phone replaced under warranty because of this and now the new one is doing the same. It's really bad in low signal areas. Verizon said it's a hardware issue the first time around.
I think it may also have to do with third party chargers. Are others with this issue using generic chargers? I read an explanation somewhere that the screen is caused to short out due to increased charge rates.

Phone has a slow response randomly and I have to reboot to fix it.

I wanna know if anyone else has this issue or not when click an app like a game it takes up to 10 seconds for it to run and after exiting sometimes the main screen is very delayed and sometimes unresponsive when scrolling left and right. I also have an issue of the phone not wanting to switch back to 4g if in 3g or 1x just stuck until I reboot or restart it. Wanna know if I should get this one replaced or not. Also GPS is horrible never accurate. It say in running little kids on the sidewalk over constantly or running threw people house. I have factory data restored it but same problem. Need to know if I need new one?

It does happen. Try a different kernel or over clocking.
this happens to me occasionally, usually only when the battery is hot/doing a LOT of things at once. (meaning when i'm charging and using pandora over bluetooth, wireless tether, and waze at once) the phone lags up so much that when i press the home button, the haptic vibrate stays on for about 3 seconds.... this is when i know that its happening - and i'll just pull the battery...
If you're running stock & it's been like that since day one, you might consider exchanging it. If you're running a custom rom/kernel, reflash & leave it at default settings for a few days & see if the problems resolve

I've never had the lag issue you speak of, however, the gps issue I have seen, but has been fixed in recent custom roms and will be addressed in the update. If you are on stock, you might want to just wait it out for 9 more days till the OTA rolls out. If you are using a custom rom/kernel combo, what are you using?

I also forgot to mention that i'm on BAMF 1.8 with the kernel that it comes with.
If your rooted, i'd recommend unchecking your "set at boot" and profiles in SetCPU, reboot, and see if it continues. As said above, if unrooted... a call to verizon may be in order.
My phone is not rooted every phone I have rooted besides like 2 I have bricked. But yeah I don't get why they didn't run this stupid phone a dule core. I got to play with a phone that had a dule core and response is so amazing.
Then you should take it back to verizon & exchange it for another. Your Tbolt shouldn't be like that out of the box. I've never had GPS issues, even on stock it would lock within a few seconds. And dual core is overrated unless you have apps that actually take advantage of it (not many). No wonder you were impressed with dual core phones lol. My mildly overclocked Tbolt runs Sense just as fluidly as any Atrix runs MotoBlur

CM7 DX2 - Issues so far

One minor and a couple of major issues...
- Notification drop-down stops accepting touch input but can still be slid up and down. Reboot fixed
- Battery life is horrible. It's better with wifi set to turn off when the screen turns off, but I'm still losing about 10% per hour. With the stock 2.3.4 ROM I was able to go 16 hours and only drop to 80%. I've read maybe I need to let the battery discharge completely so that it can calibrate? I'll try that today.
- Cell connectivity is sketchy now. I've had problems making calls. Full bars, then it tries to connect and the bars drop to 0 temporarily, then come back up and the call fails. My SMS send success rate is about 75%, sometimes down to 25%. I've had multiple text messages fail to send and some texts I end up receiving minutes and sometimes hours later. This is a huge problem.
Overall I think this is a great leap forward and the phone is very fast now, but with the battery life and sketchy cell problems I may have to go back to stock.
Anyone have any ideas?
Thanks!
I wish I could get this to be stable, and I understand it's still beta, but I have to go back to stock. If I didn't need the phone and SMS functions to be reliable then I'd stick with it, but I need my phone for work.
I'll keep an eye on how things progress and maybe try again down the road, but chances are I'll be upgrading to a Galaxy Nexus in a couple of weeks anyway. At least then I can use my X2 as a toy and not care about carrier stability.
I think these problems are rare, sorry. I do share the "wifi not reconnecting" but wifi fixer is a work around. This is a super daily driver. There was a screen blackout but I found non-compatable themes to be the problem.
We need a "This works check list kind of thread" so people know what does work. FWIW.
edit
This is the best battery life I have had on any rom.
Yeah, I also had the wifi not reconnecting problem but that was trivial. I'm back to stock now, the last straw was the phone not even reconnecting to 3G, I lost all data connectivity. I could deal with the battery and such, but the cell/data connectivity problems are a definite no-go for me.

Maybe you can start one of those threads.
I also notice a fast battery drain but the rom hasn't settled in yet and it may need more time to do so.

My issues are (minor):
One of my game can not be played (Siegecraft - after downloading the game data, the system ends with "network error") all my other games play fine, so I don't know why.
Gallery app constantly re-starts when trying to view pics. No work around it. If anyone can suggest a good gallery replacement app, please let me know, I tried Gallery Plus (I think that is what it is called) and it also did the same thing.
Major issue (Maybe not an issue):
My wife claims that some phone calls are not going through (it rings from her end, but I am not hearing the ringing on my phone for some reason - I had 5 missed calls listed on my phone). That said, 3 or 4 test calls I made came through without any issues so maybe it is the issue with the ringer not being high enough for me to hear?
Overall, so far, except for the missed calls (which may not be an issue at all) it is a very good daily driver and hopefully after things settle down a bit more it will get even better.
Navigation/Maps/Latitude issue with GPS
When I go into Navigation or Maps or Latitude, especially Navigation, there is a constant message at the bottom of the screen "Searching for GPS".
When looking at Maps, you see the current position but the area is in a fuzzy circle. It didn't happen when I was on stock rooted 2.3.4.
I did see an option to use an external BT GPS but the external is not enabled.
Any ideas?
[EDIT] [Solved] After a reboot, GPS is working fine.
Notifications Blah

I had this same problem, reboot fixed but only temporarily as it returned last night again. As of right now I can't get the notification bar drop down to accept input without a reboot. I'm borderline on this being a showstopper as I live off of the notification bar...
I've poured through the settings, but haven't found anything that fixes it. I have the notification bar power widget turned on, turning that off hasn't made a difference either. I'm going to leave it off and reboot, and see if it comes back.
Do you have the notification power widget turned on?
For everyone having problems with CM7, I HIGHLY recommend going in and wiping both cache and dalvik-cache. (Not a data wipe.) This has fixed pretty much every problem I have run into with CM7.
Now for downloading large files, I have found that I have to use tasker to create a "power profile" that never turns off the screen. I do not have the WIFI loosing connection issue that has been reported, however I have noticed (on stock as well) that when the screen times out, downloads all fail or stop. Just my 2 cents.
Ciao!

Even though this was done after applying CM7 in BSR? Not sure why doing it again would make any difference, but stranger things have been known to happen.

I'm not sure if people have tried this, but it works for me...
Settings -> Wireless and Networks -> WiFi Settings -> (menu button) -> Advanced -> WiFi Sleep Policy
By default it's set to turn wifi off when the screen turns off but can be set to "Never."
I would like to report the only problem I have had with CM7 on my DX2 is one of my apps not restoring data I backed up before flashing. Other than that, I LOVE THIS ROM! I used this ROM on my old Dinc and absolutely loved it then too. I feel at home with CM7, and since this is only a beta version, I can't wait for the final release!

I wiped cache and dalvik (even though I did it in the install steps as well) and the frozen notifications problem has not resurfaced for me. I will post again if it returns, but thanks for the tip moon shadow!
Well, I guess I'll give it another shot. Getting back up and running is almost second-nature now, hooray for backups. haha
I'll wipe, flash, boot CM7, reboot, wipe again, and see if things behave any better. I just went back to stock a few days ago and I'm ready to kill it again. Only 2.5 weeks to upgrade devices!
So I've read through the CM7 development threads and through this one regarding some of the issues. I am currently running on Liberty. Since I am still learning the Android world (read: I'm freaking clueless), would you guys suggest changing over to CM7, or staying with Liberty?
Thanks! (from the girl who's trying to learn...)

I have never run the liberty rom but i do recommend cm7. The only issue I've had is with wifi. It loses connection sometimes. I downloaded wifi fixer from the market. It doesn't fix the problem but it does reconnect wifi for me. Some have this problem and some don't.
Make a nandroid and give it a try. If you don't like it you can always go back to liberty.

Thanks so much!! I found the directions to give it a try, and realized it was waaaaay more complex than what I felt comfortable doing on my own. Plus, it said I would have to install it from Gingerbread... so that would be 2 installs to complete. May have to wait for my tech guru for this one! However, I'm excited to check it out!
(By the way, I realized that on the couple posts I have, you have helped with both of them. Double thanks. )

Good luck with whatever you decide but it really isn't as complicated as it sounds. Moonshadow has created some great tutorials to guide you through each step. And you are welcome for the help.

Looks like the notification issues returned for me, great timing. I noticed this time, that one of the notifications that is stuck there is partially Swiped off to the left. I took a screenshot but I'm a nub here and can't post the link.
On another note, I continue to have the wireless problems... dx2 keeps trying to connect, sometimes says disabled. I have set it to never turn off in the screen timeout section. Very weird...

Well, I went and reinstalled CM7 last night. I was diligent about clearing both caches both before and after install, and again a little later after reinstalling apps, plus I also cleared the battery stats.
Don't want to jinx it, but so far so good. Battery life has been very good, I easily went 16 hours and the battery was still > 50%. No call or SMS issues and no notification bug yet. We'll see how things work over the next couple of days...
I've got horrid battery life (down to 60% in 5 hours of LOW use) and some wifi issues (sometimes has a hard time connecting, sometimes not).
I'm going to try the davlic and cache wipe and report back.

[Q] Phone doesn't run so great anymore

So, after 8 months of use, my M8 is finally in a situation where I'm kind of sick of it running so poorly. In the past I've always had these issues over time, but I always contributed it mainly to running custom ROM's. Well, when I got my M8, it ran so well I decided to leave it stock. Well it's finally starting to hit a wall and it's more of a frustration than a joy to use. Swype is borderline impossible to use since it lags so bad, freezes are infrequent but occur, etc etc.
So my question is, what are the most likely contributors? Apps that run in the background? Too many apps? Too much space used? I can't think of much else, since, like I said, it's still fully stock. Or is this just what I have to expect from a phone?
Do you clear the cache in your app settings. If you game a lot than I would definitely start with the game apps first.

Android 5.0.1 is pretty lag free in my opinion

I kept my phone stock for quite some time because I felt I didn't need to change anything, until last week because I was tired of radio issues. Bottom line, ATT sucks at getting updates out, so if your running stock, your firmware is like three updates back. I see a massive improvements in speed and battery with 3.28.1540.5. If you know how, I would S-OFF and upgrade firmware to that and flash the debloated custom stock Rom that comes with root and SU. There are straight forward instructions in the att m8 development thread.

I might look into this. What I don't get though.. I can understand if new updates are quicker. That makes sense. What doesn't, is how ridiculously poor my phone runs compared to the first few months I had it. It's been like this for every phone I've had. I don't game, I don't have all that many apps. In my running app list, the only self installed things there are Facebook and Swype. I have plenty of extra storage internal and on my SD. So what is it that causes such poor performance over time? I'll definitely have to check out the newer roms and finally s-off.. but I've done plenty of custom roms before with other phones and the same thing always happens, things run fine for a bit and then slowly go to crap.

Its hard to say what is causing your issue, and aside from saying Swype is lagging (might be an issue with that app itself) and the phone "doesn't run so great anymore" you really haven't provided any specifics of what the problem is. You also haven't indicated if you tried to clear cached as jball suggested, and if so, if it helped at all.
Might be some runaway (poorly coded) AT&T bloat apps. But in general, apps running in the background will not slow the system down much. There are various apps to track battery and memory usage, so you might try one of those, to determine if any particular apps are the culprit.
I can't say I've seen any lag on my M8, but I switch ROMs fairly occasionally, and keep it updated to current Android builds (thanks to s-off). Clearing up your data partition alone might help (but might now, on the other hand) so you might also consider backing up any personal data and doing a factory reset. Wiping the slate clean might solve your issue.
Ok.. well a lot info there but one step at a time. I realized my phone is Sunday unusable with Wi-Fi turned on.. which is quite interesting and I'm pretty lost on this one. With Wi-Fi on, it's like my entire phone stops, not just the actual internet speeds. Apps like Facebook take ten seconds just to load, and then the actual content takes sometimes 15 seconds to load or maybe not even at all. Also, keep in mind, my actual internet speeds are fine, and even test perfectly fine on my phone.
As soon as I turn off Wi-Fi, it seems everything on my phone I'd dramatically quicker and everything loads near immediate. I've tried restarting my phone, cycling airplane mode, not really sure what else to do.

Does it happen anywhere you use WiFi? If so maybe try fully wiping and flashing the firmware, or just bust out the ruu to make it easier, can't hurt to try it should help tho
Did you even try to wipe cache, as has been suggested twice previously?
Otherwise, if no major system changes, and the phone has just been running worse and worse, a factory reset may help; as I would have to think it may be 3rd party apps that are to blame. Backup your personal data, factory reset, and just start to install a minimum of apps, and see how it runs.
If still no improvement, the above comment to try to RUU is not a bad idea, either. RUU provides a fully "blank slate" and may solve your issue.
