Hi all -
My mom just inherited an AT&T Samsung Galaxy II (rooted, OS ICS 4.0.3, Build IML74K.117) and I am trying to move her contact from her SIM to her phone or, even better sync with her Gmail account.
From the Contacts app, I'm opening the menu and selecting SIM Management, then choosing Copy Contacts From SIM and selecting the option of the Gmail account (I've also tried selecting the Phone option as well). Instead of going to the screen where I can choose the contacts to copy, the phone just goes back to the SIM Management screen. (I took a screenshot of it but it's been 8 minutes and the text is still in Send mode on her phone.)
Any ideas on what is preventing me from being able to move the contacts? My next move is to take it back to stock and see if that doesn't help but that's really a last resort and something I'm trying to avoid.
Thanks in advance!
Lauren
Can you see the contacts when you log into her Gmail account on a computer?

Hi, thanks for responding...
No, because she is coming from a stone-age phone and has never had anything linked to her Gmail account before, which is also new. So in this case, I'm attempting to transfer the SIM contacts to her phone/Gmail account in order to A) get them on the phone in a more unified manner and B) sync with Gmail so that she now has an online backup of her contacts. She's coming from a Motorola Razr circa 2005. For real.
I couldn't say for sure, but the problem could be that the format in which the Razr stored the contacts is not being read by the SGS2 which is kicking you back out of the menu.
This is probably an old thread but no Gmail sync along with cannot send mms, indicate that you probably have no internet access.
Make sure you do have first, either wifi or mobil data turn on

Nope, the format is universal and can be read by pretty much any phone.

I have a wierd situation I am wondering if someone else may have had the same experience with. My wife and I just got 2 HD2 Leo from Tmobile. I installed the Droid Nexus ROM on it. Everything seems ok except the wierdest thing keeps happening. In Droid if one of us adjusts our contacts somehow it affects both phones. I was at work today when she made some changes to her contacts and it deleted some of mine. How could this be happening? The phones are miles apart. Does anyone know whats up? Also is there an easy way to delete all contacts in the Nexus one without having to select one by one. Thanks for any help!

You don't mean SIM contacts, right? Because both of you guys have different sim cards so I'm leaning toward google contacts or other web-based email contacts?
well actually I mean sim card phonebook contacts. On my phone last night I was in windows and copied all my contacts to the SIM, Then I booted DROID and imported the contacts to the directory. Well this morning my wife noticed all my contacts had been stored in her phone. I thought that was wierd but what made it crazier is that she then deleted all but a few contacts from her phone. On my way home this evening I noticed I only had a few contacts in my list. Really Wierd. What she changed also affected my phone. We have HD2 Leos running DROID Nexus,
Any Thoughts?
Are both of you running the droid ROM? So you flash the same ROM onto both phones, correct? I'm sure the explanation here is very simple just that I can't articulate it in a manner that is best understood by you. It couldn't have been SIM contacts because those are unique to the SIM, and you can't delete/add contacts to that SIM unless it's actually on the phone that you're operating. Under winmo, if your contact is saved onto a SIM, then you should see the sim card icon next to their name, if it's a PHONE contact, then it has a figure of a person next to their contact.
Imagining if I'm using an IM client, if I add a friend's screen name on the computer, and that new screen name is linked to my account on a web server, then I expect the new screen name to show up on the chat client on my phone. I suspect the same thing is happening with your phone. You probably set both phones up with the same account and whatnot, and when you add/delete/sync new contacts, it affects whoever is using that account. I don't think this has anything to do with SIM contacts at all, but has to do with google accounts when you first set up the phone with the droid ROM. Again, that's just my guess.
I think I understand what you mean. We did actually use the same Gmail account to set up each ROM. So we should use different Gmail accounts huh? I didn't realize there was such an intricate connection between Gmail and DROID OS. I am totally new to the DROID, actually this is my first smartphone period.
So what do you suggest is the fix? Hard reset one phone ? How to I get it back to where I can put a different gmail account on the phone?
How do i delete my contacts off her phone now ? lol
You don't need to hard reset. You're running android off of an SD card so just delete (or format if you want) everything android related off of that SD card and put in another copy. When you go through the setup/registration process, use a different gmail account. WHAM!
So I can just delete the android folder from the phone? I really don't want to have to format it if I can get around it. doesn't that wipe everything off the drive?
what drive? I meant formatting your SD card. Anyway, I think i'm just confusing you even more.
Yes, delete the android folder and create a new one on the SD card.
Hi GUYS!
I just bought the Thunderbolt, My very first Droid very very happy!
My question is how do i back up my contacts..
I rooted my phone last week, and have installed perfect storm ROM. and backed everything up with Titanium Back up.
However, I realize that every time a new ROM or updated version comes out, I would have to wipe all my data. I only restore User Apps and no the System Data, becomes this is a new rom. Or should i restore all??
So my question is what files do i need to restore from Titanium backup to restore my contacts. because it gets very annoying having to link my contacts between Google email account, and Exchange each time.
**is there a way I can save all the phone contacts i have from exchange, and link that to Google permanently?
So when i updated my Google account, all my number would come out..
or is there a file i can restore through my Ti Backup to save all that hassle, Everytime I wipe.
Thanks Guys!
Your contacts should have sync'd to your online Google account.
That's the beauty of Android. Once everything is sync'd up. You can change phones, log into your google account and just resync all your info immediately.
hey buddy,
how do i sync all my contact to my google account now?

yea importing contacts can be bad if you have google sync on, it will create duplicate contacts if you restore contacts and alot of hassle removing the dupes
If you add your contacts as Google contacts you can edit them/view them online at http://www.google.com/contacts . They will automatically sync up then. Also, there are programs on Market you can get to save the contacts as well. Lastly, with most roms, once you get going with it, you don't *always* have to wipe; oftentimes you can just do it as an upgrade. At least that's what I can tell.

check under accounts and sync and make sure your google sync is on, contacts calendar and mail. when you save contacts on your phone you are given 2 options, phone contact or google contact. always choose google contact if you want them auto synced. Phone contacts wont get backup unless you use Verizon's Backup Assistant or use a 3rd party program like Ti Backup Pro or some other software to do it. Easier to use google contact and forget about it.
I came from a blackberry with Exchange mail.. So all my contacts are actually stored in my exchange mail. So is there a way where I can just sync all my contact information from Exchange mail to Google account.
I hate having to link both google info with my exchange mail info.. A couple of times i don't mind, but if i want to play around and update roms frequently i rather not deal with this type of problem if its avoidable.
Once you are all updated on your Google account, anytime you change roms and you get the "Welcome to Android" startup screen (If you wipe your phone prior to changing roms), once you put in your google ID and password, your phone will "pull" the contact information to your phone from your google account, so you won't need to re-input anything.
Only time you may have an issue is if you had a contact on your phone and for whatever reason you did not sync before wiping, you may lose any added contacts that didn't get sync'd up.
The easiest way I backed up my contacts was just make a vcard back up from the menu in messaging app to your SD card and then restoring it from your SD card when your done flashing. It was very fast and easy for me.

wipe wont wipe your sdcard, unless you physically do so in clockwork recovery.
Sounds like you got everything set up. Congrats on your new phone!
On a side-note. You have an Android, not a Droid. The Droids are a specific set of Verizon Android devices.

When I start a text and put in the name of the contact I want to message, duplicates are showing. I have it set so it doesn't do this for calls, but I can figure out how to do it for texts. It shows 2 of every contact. Is there a way to set it do it only pulls names from either the phone or sim?
Any sUggestions as to why this is happening?

I already did that. i dont have this issue for when I make calls and look up names, just texts. Im not storing my stuff on gmail either
This all started after I tried to update my phone to the newest update thru mini kies. i ended up having to wipe my phone and restart. I did get the update, and now i noticed its doing this.
It looks as though the Messaging contacts display is ignoring the 'Contacts-->Display Options' settings. I have my phone contacts set to display just the names etc from the Phone memory, not the SIM memory and it works well - no duplicates. However, when composing a Message or Email and press the Contact button, the list of contacts shows 2 of everybody. I've gone through everything obvious but can't see it, now turning to the experts for advice please? What do i need to tick/untick remove or whatever to put this right?
Any suggestions how to make this stop?

Are you using gmail to backup your contacts? If so just go into gmail and consolidate all the dupes than delete the contacts saved on your phone and sim. Had the same problem with dupes in the messaging. If you need more help just shoot me a pm

My contacts are not backed up to gmail, and im just using the regular stock rom. I dont have phone phone flashed/rooted/whatever.
I had the same problem
sign in to gmail on your computer click contacts it will display all including the phone numbers stored on you your phone if you delete them all (contacts with phone numbers) it should take off all duplicate contacts away
but make sure all phone numbers stored already on your sim card
its something about MIUI if you ever used it before
if that didn't work I know for sure if you have a gmail contact and a phone number contact with the same name and you trying to send sms or mms it show both of them as to send to at that point I would edit the first name of gmail contact by adding * to the name
Hope that helps
But I dont have any contacts listed on my gmail contacts when I sign in on my laptop.

the only thing i can think of that after you restore your phone do you restore it from backup that it has a duplicate contacts ?
or go under contacts/press the first key to the left/display option/ choose phone, sim, gmail (all) then view your contact list and delete all duplicate contacts
best thing i found is to store contacts on sim only that allow you to import them to any phone and also to your own phone after you wipe it off
My contacts show up fine in my address book, no duplicates. So I know the issue isnt with that. There are no duplicates on my phone.
I dont know what to do. Ive tried everything, and its really annoying when trying to send a text to go thru all those duplicates.
when I go to create a text, there are also email addresses showing when I begin typing a name to search for a contact. I dont know where they are coming from

You need to backup all your contacts to gmail. First.
Go to accounts & Sync and tap your google account or any other email accounts you have on your phone. It will give your sync screen, see if "sync contacts" is ticked there. If it is then try unticking it, see if that helps.

I really screwed up this time... Normally I'm pretty good with backing up and preventing this kinda stuff but this one slipped through my fingers. I did a factory reset of my Samsung S3 (US Cellular) and formatted it on my PC via USB. I assumed all my contacts had been saved through my gmail account, but apparently they were not.
#1. Is there any way I can possibly retrieve some of my lost contacts? One number in particular is extremely important.
#2. If they weren't being saved to my Gmail account (some did, some didn't), where did they save to?

I'm supposed to 'sync' every time I want a number to be saved? I've had this number in my phone for months and months.
If your contacts haven't been saved in GMail account then see if your Sim Card has them. When you save a contact, you can choose to save it in your phone's memory or Sim Card. To see if your Sik Card has your contacts saved, Go to Contacts, press Home button and tap Import and hen choose import from Sim Card.

Normally, and if you activated the sync, it should sync once you created the contact and you got an internet connection. If this did not happen, and you already formatted anything and don't have any nandroid backup or Titanium Backup of the contacts files, I fear there is no way to get those contacts not synced back.
Did you check the contacts in Gmail on web? The phone saves to Google account based on preferences settings.

Yes.
Check with your Service Provider, and demand a print of calls or sms messages sent from your number in a specific time frame, that way you'll 100% get the number. But this method is not free, they will charge you for it. Good luck.

Does anyone else have a problem using the G3 and saving contacts? I have a Bumbped Verizon G3, and my Girlfriend has the T-Mobile G3, but BOTH of us are unable to SAVE new contacts. I have ben usuing/Flashing android since the OG Droid and have never had a problem with my google account, but it just strikes me odd as we've never had problems until we've been using the G Series phones.

when I first add a contact it'll bring up which account i'd like to save it to and I make sure its my gmail, then I go to my actual gmail in my settings and sync everything about a good ten thousand times, and once I flash a new rom it's all gone again.

I would suggest you make sure you have all the contacts you want on your device, then log in on google contacts from your PC and erase everything and re-sync your phone. I had to do this before my contacts would stick or stop duplicating themselves when I first got this phone.
I always save the contacts to the sd card. And restore from the sd card.
