[Q] brick bug - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi .. i originally rooted my phone using " zirggles " ? it was something on you tube i found ! well it worked untill my s2 updated to 4.0.4 then i lost part of my root. i still have titanium back up ... but if i run root checker it says i don't have proper root. and some apps i cant download. i have checked and i do have an insane chip ! i want to root my phone properly again, but i know with this chip its risky. would it be ok to flash 4.0.3 firmware .. would this get rid of the brick bug ? if so is there somewhere i can download the firmware ? im curently on XXLQ6 or is there another way of rooting my phone properly again ? i have super user on the phone but it says outdated binary. please be understanding as i only joined yesterday and i am a total noob to this all

4.0.3 firmware is safe, the issue exists only in stock 4.0.4 ICS and if you are on 4.0.4 ICS don't perform any type of wipe, reset etc... Flash 4.0.3 firmware or lower version's like gingerbread or any custom rom with custom kernels, also custom kernels for 4.0.4 version's are safe theoretically but i still wont recommend it because I have seen people brick their phone from CWM, so the problem is with the kernel which has eMMc cap erase command, most custom kernels don't have it, but be warned an old Siyah kernel has it so use the newest one.
For the sake of safety i recommend that you flash 4.0.3 via Odin.

ok thanks for the advice .. if i was to use a Siyah kernel, which one would you suggest ? would i have to use odin to do this ? i have CWM on my phone, so could i do it from the phone rather than odin ? if i can, would i need to put the new kernel on the external SD card ?
thanks a million

dwnld the tar file of siyah v4.1.5 (for galaxy S2) and flash the same using 'Odin', since its the best way ma8

Latest Siyah 5.0.1 should not be a problem as well. Using it for a week now.

Use the latest Siyah its pretty amazing, i consider Odin as the safest method, even though if you can obtain Siyah as a zip file you can do it via CWM which is also a pretty safe and easy method for noobs, if you downloaded a tar flash via Odin or Mobile Odin.

[Q] New phone. Best approach to root and go to ICS? (version problems?)

tl, dr: brand new SG S2. Want to get CF-Root v5 CWM5, CM9, Siyah kernel 3.
I've been reading a lot of threads here lately, but I'm still confused about some things.
I'm new to android, but not so new to most concepts mentioned as I'm a linux user.
So I have a brand new SG S2 and want to root it and install CM9 (ICS) in it.
But before that, ideally I'd like to backup my phone (rom + efs). But to do that I have to flash CF-root, which itself modifies the stock kernel. So I'll lose my stock kernel.
1) Any work around to this? In linux?
My understanding is that this will get me the yellow triangle. And on CF thread he explains how to get rid of it. But the problem is that I checked the stock kernel thread here and I don't see my firmware there.
(4) Find an original Samsung signed stock kernel (preferably from the same stock firmware you have, but it's not terribly important)

My firmware is PDA: I9100BUKG2 and PHONE: I9100BUKG1.
Do I only need to care about the KG1/KG2 reference? And which one is more important the PDA or PHONE?
So for example would XWKG1 do the trick?
There is also the issue of CF-Root upgrade. For my phone only CF-Root v4.1-CWM4 is available (I have PDA *KG2 and PHONE *KG1).
2) So after I flash CF-Root v4.1-CWM4, get root, backup my phone with CWM and k-tool, can I upgrade to CF-Root v5? Or am I stuck to v4?
Chainfire said:

Other kernels
Replacing CF-Root with other kernels and vice-versa sometimes works, sometimes it doesn't. I don't have a list.
When going from CF-Root to another kernel, root will usually stay, while CWM will be lost (unless the other kernel also includes it), but there should not be issues. The CWM Manager app may remain, but probably won't do anything useful.

3) Does this means it's impossible to upgrade to CF-Root v5 or to use the Siyah kernel?
How can I solve this?
Sorry if this post is somewhat confusing, I'm a bit confused myself
Thanks for any help.
Pmed u dude
Mod or Die
1.) There are a few BUKG2 on samfirmware.com. Not sure which one your provider is though. Once you upgrade to ICS (CM9(, you can use the triangle away in the original development thread to remove the yellow triangle and reset counter (works only for ICS) so that is one option for you.
Regarding the kernel, go under settings, about phone and see what it says under kernel (KG1 or KG2).
2) Once you root and get CWM, you can just flash a different kernel with the updated CWM to get v5. You could also just install the siyah kernel from V4 as it comes with its own version of CWM.
3) You will be fine with flashing most kernels from CF-kernel. Most kernel for the i9100 in xda includes CWM or sometimes its own version of CWM.
I used zergrush exploit to root my gf her i9100 with 2.3.5. Used root explorer to grab efs directory.
Then i had root so i could use mobile odin. Now phone is on litening 4.0.3 ics rom probably still with gb bootloader.
No triangle yet
Gonna flash ics bootloader through odin and move to cm9 nightlies tomorrow.
Verstuurd van mijn GT-I9100 met Tapatalk
The zergrush exploit requires
(1) make sure u have installed adb drivers for ur device
Click to collapse
What exactly does this mean?
Do I need to install the SDK? Or do I only need the adb executable file? Or is there any SG S2 specific file that I need to download?
Thanks
EDIT: in linux it only requires setting up a udev rules file
developer.android.com/guide/developing/device.html
Also went with the zergrush, and after that kTool to flash CF-root CWM kernel.

will 4.0.4 brake my device???!!

Hey there ^_^
first of all sorry for my English
I was want to ask about the ICS 4.0.4 for the i9100
Because somebody says that this rom may brake my device...
The problem that I have i9100g and upgraded for 4.0.4 but my friend have i9100 and I upgraded his mobile to 4.0.4 (the united kingdom rom)
so hhahahaha I would pay him if his mobile been broken later
Summary is the 4.0.4 for the i9100 will brake my device???????
Thanks ^_^
and sorry it's the first time I write a thread
It will brick your phone if you wipe data or restore nandroid backup through temporary CWM recovery, but only if you stay with 4.0.4 stock kernel (from Samsung).

If you friend doesn't ROOT his phone, he will never BRICK his phone.
However, if he wants to ROOT his phone or if his phone is already rooted, then he must flash a custom kernel e.g Siyah, speedmod, Dorimanx or dream kernel immediately

You can check if your EMMC chip can be bricked ('eMMC check' app from market) if it is known as INSANE, than it is highly possible to brick it.
But...
You will probably brick INSANE device when perform wipe in CWM recovery on stock 4.0.4 kernel.
If you use stock 3e recovery with stock kernel (even with root) or even CWM but with custom kernel with disabled CAP_ERASE function (all actual custom kernels I know) than your phone is safe.
If you are not sure:
1. Use stock firmware without any modyfications or
2. Use stock firmware with root only but stay with 3e recovery or
3. Use stock firmware with custom kernel (root and CWM included) - optimal sollution or
4. Use custom rom with custom kernel included (I'm still not sure about CF-Root kernel becouse it is almost stock kernel, I don't know there is cap_erase disabled or not - in case you want to use it with CWM) or
5. Use 4.0.3 with... anything you like (3e, CWM, root, stock, custom, dualboot...).

YES IT WILL BREAK UR PHONE , got mine broken last week ,and just got it back from samsung yesterday and it cost me 240 € !!!
just get into download mode and flash siyah kernel.tar via odin , then downgrade to 4.0.3 , and ofcourse dont think about the word WIPEwhile on stock kernel
my phone works fine Cmiui 4.0.4 now put 4,1,1
Thank you allllllllllllllllll ^_^
really thank you
I think the best idea is to downgrade for 4.0.3 because the device is not mine
But now if I want to downgrade for 4.0.3 do I need to flash a custom kernel first??!!

1. If you want to downgrade, the best way is to flash a stock 4.0.3 firmware via Odin.
2. Alternatively, you can flash it via a pre-rooted ICS 4.0.3 firmware via CWM recovery after flashing a custom kernel
Let me know your preferred option

No. You don't need to flash a custom kernel first if you want to flash through Odin.
Just download a suitable 4.0.3 firmware, read flashing instructions, and flash through Odin

[Q] Recovered from a Soft brick. Resetting back to stock.. DOUBTS! :)

Hey Guys!
I just bought the mighty S2 and am loving it.
Baseband version: I9100DDLPA
Build Number: IML74K.XWLP7
I tried rooting my phone with ODIN and CF_ROOT method. This is the file version i used.
CF-Root-SGS2_XW_XEN_LP7-v5.4-CWM5.zip
Now after rooting, my phone booted automatically. When i tried restarting, it was getting stuck on the yellow triangle.
I then downloaded the other kernel and tried flashing that too with ODIN.
CF-Root-SGS2_DX_XTC_LP7-v5.4-CWM5.zip
But alas..
Then i downloaded the official ROM for my country and flashed it with ODIN. Fixed my phone. Below is the firmware i used.
GT-I9100_INU_I9100XWLP7_I9100ODDLP9_I9100DDLPA
This runs on ICS 4.0.3. I see that there's one more ROM of my country thats 4.0.4 on samsung-updates.
So my questions are as below
1) Which CF_ROOT version do i use to get my stock firmware rooted?
2) Is 4.0.4 any better than 4.0.3? Where do i find the changelog?
3) Can I flash a firmware of ANY country? Does it matter if I flash the firmware of my neighboring country?
4) Where do i find the stock kernel for my Firmware?
5) Does flashing the official firmware flash the stock kernel along with it? Meaning will it remove the Siyah-s2-v4.1.5 i am currently running :cyclops: ?
6) If 5 is yes, and if i need to by chance send my phone to the service center for warranty, and also if I am running a custom rom, will flashing the original firmware of my country + removing the yellow triangle + resetting the counter bring it back to warranty? ;P
7) Is there a way to try a ROM from the SD card without actually flashing it?
I seriously gotta parcel a crate of beer for the one who answers my questions.. One all set, I am in for trying out a custom ROM!

1 I don't know I use siyah kernel to root although there are full instructions in chainfires thread.
2 4.0.4 is better than 4.0.3 as it's an upgrade , use Google for change log.
3 yes you can flash any countries rom for your device.
4 in Stock rom. Just reflash the ROM to stock kernel, but this will loose root access.
5 yes. Correct.
6. It will remove triangle but you need triangle away app to reset counter. Credits to chainfire
7 no not that I know of.
Sir can I suggest you read the sticky threads in this forum. There are many excellent guides, advice, tips and information. You would do well to read them to save bricking your new device.

Yes to get stock kernel re-flash the whole stock rom. There is a method of extracting the kernel from the zip file but I've never tried it. Easy and safe to re flash whole rom package.

I noticed that flashing the firmware didnt make a single change to my phone. The apps and settings were totally intact. Will installing 4.0.4 too be the same? Also i heard about this brick bug on our phone. Does that happen while only wiping data/cahche using CWM? Is there an anther way of wiping data/cache/dalvik etc? other than factory reset for the bug

When moving between like firmwares (same number) you often do this without wiping data however when upgrading or down grading a full wipe is necessary. To avoid brick bug only wipe with a custom kernel eg siyah etc

[Q] Assistance needed with first root of SG2 i9100

Hi guys. I have been a frequent visitor and learned alot about android and features. I am ready to root my galaxy s2 i9100
My details are :
Android version: 4.04
Model number gt-i9100
Baseband version: i9100XXLQ6
Kernal version: I9100xxlbq-cl911584
build number: IMM76D.XXLQB
I downloaded
ODIN 1.85
CF-Root-SGS2_XX_XEO_LQB-v5.6-CWM5
I am not seeing the original kernal file up for download for my version. What else do I need for my root? Is there any advice such as best method and such. Thank you kindly everyone. Mods, if I posted in the wrong section, please move my thread to the correct location.
That's all you need mate. This kernel is declared safe by Chainfire but as any 4.0.4 kernel should not be used to wipe data because of possibility of emmc cap bug rendering your phone bricked. Root with this kernel but make sure to switch to custom safe one before attempting to wipe data.
Best of luck

Essentially flashing using a 4.04 firmware will brick the phone? or is it when I flash, it will be bad to flash using a 4.04 firmware? Sooo confused.
If anyone has the steps what I should do, please tell me. I am worried about bricking.
If I root the phone, when official JB comes out, will I be able to update?
any help guys? The thread isn't very clear what do I do if I have this kernal. Do I downgrade before rooting?
Insted of flashing that Cf root kernel with Odin or Cwm, flash Siyah 4.1.5.

I actually have the same HW version in my new SGS2 and I have checked with eMMC check (downloaded from Google Play) that my chip is safe from "brick bug"
Now the question is: which kernel to choose, CF or Siyah ? I'm planning to use CyanogenMod 10 on this phone, does kernel version matter at all in this case ?
/edit:
ROM will be either original CM10 or one of the variants (like HellyBean for example)

If GotBrickbug app by CF said your chip is safe than it shouldn't matter what kernel you use. Safe hardware.
Personally I always prefer rooting with CF kernels that match my FW version. Then if you're still unsure about the chip... flash siyah, go to advanced (while still in recovery) > reboot recovery. Then wipe data with siyah kernel just to be on the safe side. I always keep siyah 3.5.2 (the first transisiontl ics/jb kernel) for those purposes. CM10 built in kernels are all considered safe so that's the last time you'll ever be worried about it.
Best of luck, man
Thank you very much, I ran emmc check and I have a sane chip.
if I flash with the CF LBQ, what is my next step?

Thank you very much!
If my questions seemed noobish, its because I want to be very sure. It my first expensive phone.
a question though, When samsung upgrades us to JB, will I be able to update it?

If my questions seemed noobish, its because I want to be very sure. It my first expensive phone.
a question though, When samsung upgrades us to JB, will I be able to update it?

Samsung releases firmware in various regions and with varied carriers. So I bet that till it is officially released it will take time but when it does you will get OTA if your are on 'STOCK' ROM. but if you move away to custom rom then you will have to update manually.

So essentially I need to revert to 4.04 stock to upgrade? How do I do that?

To revert back assuming you didn't do backup before, download 4.0.4 firmware for your region on sammobile and flash it using odin.. Then to upgrade it when official update are up just hit OTA, kies, or flash it via odin the same way like you flash 4.0.4..
If you don't have idea how to flash then google it, theres plenty much tutorials out there.. hope it helps
Ohhhhhh. I get it. Flash using CF, or CM 10, use triangle app to remove warning triangle and if I need to unroot, flash with 4.04 (my region) using odin? Sound pretty simple. Am I missing any steps?

Actually I get confused myself hehe, by "Flash using CF, or CM 10" you mean flash what? The rest are ok..
Well, let's put this simple, Flash the CF-Root for your phone then you're rooted now, if you want to flash custom rom such as cm10 then flash it (the cm10 zip file to be flashed on recovery mode and don't forget to read the cm10 instruction before & after flashing), if you want to get rid of the triangle then do it with triangle away, finally to unroot and revert to stock, just flash stock firmware via odin..
Hi everyone! I just rooted my phone and it was sooo easy.
Thank you so much. Your advice and help definitely made it much easier than I though.
Yeah, welcome to the rooted world where you can explore more with your phone

[Q] Confused 1st time rooter

Hi all,
well, I've read the site rules and watched carefully the video... I fully admit that I'm a noob and I'm ready to live with this status for a while
Despite this, I'll anyway post my questions, and I'm really grateful in advance for any help.
I want to root my SGS2 because I would like to install some specific apps and why not to change the rom to have something more "serious".
My actual config is as follow:
GT-I9100
Android version: 4.0.4
Base band: I9100BULP8
Kernel version: 3.0.15-1056084 [email protected] #3 SMP PREEMPT Thu Sep 13
Built: IMM76D.BULPG
I'm really not familiar with all terms used in the android space, I read several threads looking for a rooting manual and found quite good stuff. My actual worry is that I'm unable to find something (cf_root etc...) to use matching with my actual installed levels, can someone point me out on a sure rooted stuff and how to.
I don't want to have my phone out of order, this is the reason for this post. As stated I got confused and got lost with the wording used, ex: don't use this rom because if you have the eMMC chip with VYL00M (my case) etc... That's why thanks in advance !
Mo
you can flash siyah from this thread :
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1555259
its safe, got no eMMc erase bug...
Flashing siyah will gain you root after which you can flash any Rom of your choice..
Dont forget to make a nandroid backup..
cheers

Lol the poor guy ain't good with technical words, you see your current version of kernel probably has a serious issue called a brick bug, it renders the phone unusable and recovery is a hassle in case of soft brick, hard brick situation is unrecoverable. Install got brick bug app by chainfire and check whether you are vulnerable so you can be more cautious, installing cm roms and certain other roms are safe, before flashing you must check whether it is effected by eMMc brick bug, and do not perform any erase activity if you are effected by the bug.
Peace
Edit : If you are effected install via Odin only. And this bug is present only in ICS Roms currently, if you are in gb you are safe, and be careful about flashing stock ICS use safe custom roms which has eMMc Cap erase disabled.
Using GT - I9100
I thank those who give helpful comments
I expect the same from others.
Hi,
thank you both for your answers, Siyah looks a good alternative. Is there a specific version to use ?
Is installing a CF-root a more straight forward process ? Assuming to find the right one...
Thanks again

Siyah is the best alternative for u ma8, as its brick bug free for sure and beeing the best kernel to root with gr8 success
u dwnld the tar file of siyah version 4.1.5 for S2 and flash the same by putting the file in 'PDA' section of 'ODIN' to root ur phone
u can google for lot of Youtube Video guides avilable for ODIN flash on ur s2
You can flash This from stock recovery (place the file in SD Card) and flash via stock recovery , then flash any custom Rom if you want to try JB , try NeatROM Lite v4.0 , after flashing this , you can just flash latest PhilZ Kernel v3.75 (Link in my signature )
Thanks for your help,
a last question (I hope) why the 4.1.5 version instead of the 5.0.1 ?
Stability issues ?
Have a good day

first root ur phone using v4.1.5 and then upgrade it to v5.0.1
i dislike the siyah v5.0.1..best to use siyah 4.1.5
so basically steps:
1. Install clockwork mode recovery(CWM) through recovery mode
2. Install siyah 4.1.5 by installing zip from sd card
3. now install any rom of your choice and enjoy
OK I am a NOOB too but need some clarification I just replaced my i9100 do to a brick bug so I gotta get this right. I just checked the replaced motherboard and sure enough it also has the bug SO, I need to know as it does seem quite clear already but only say 90% so to make it ABSOLUTELY CLEAR in order to avoid the bug I simply have to use siyah 4.1.5 and then I am free to flash whatever, GB + ICS + JB / 4.0.4 , 4.1.1 whatever the bug ONLY applys to my understanding (correct me here) with stock recovery and original ICS kernel.
NEXT NOOB question often ROM's pack in a kernel what things could bring back a dangerous situation. Flashing ROM's ? (maybe include a dangerous kernel or something ?).... 2: apps? can I ever factory data wipe safely again or with siyah after the previous protocol is it safe ? ?
:silly::silly:Also really Confused !?!?!?!:silly::silly:

Hey all,
just to let you know the status. I installed Siyah 4.1.5 using Odin as advised by Sun90 and everything went perfectly smooth.
Thank you !
I think my mext move will be first to install a good backup tool then to scout for other rom like cyanogen etc...
@futiless,
as I said using Odin, it's safe ! I read that dual boot is now available with the latest version of Siyah, that could be the answer for trying new roms while preserving a working one. For sure I'll test it.
Thanks again for your help
