[Q] Upgrade to the Note II and keep unlimited Data? - Verizon Samsung Galaxy Note II

I currently have the dreaded Iphone 4. Im looking at getting the Samsung Galaxy Note II. The problem is that I currently have unlimited data. What I was thinking about doing is transfering the upgrade to my wifes phone and getting the Note II. Then switching the phone to my number and keeping the unlimited data on my phone. My wife does not use as much data as I do. Will this work?
Thanks

If she's not on unlimited data her data plan would stay the same but I'm not too sure if Verizon lets you do that upgrade way anymore.

thats how i kept mine...the rep at the store told me i couldnt do it but the people at customer service told me i could. I told the rep that and he said okay ill just put a note in the account that says they told you that you could.

My brother and I walked into a Verizon store. He bought the note 2 on his account. We walked outside, switched SIM cards and now I have a note 2 with unlimited data.
I don't bother telling them what we are doing because last year when I did the same thing they told me that if I try to switch SIM cards I would fry it. Then someone else told me that the SIM is only for data, not voice. Both lies...

The problem with that is that Verizon does not have removable sim cards. I think it is built into the phone some how. I wish the sim card was removable.

Sorry I did not know that. I have the Iphone 4 and there is no sim card. So how will it work if I upgrade my wifes Iphone 4 to the Note II? I will not have a sim card since I have the Iphone 4. She will have the Note II and a sim card?

I thought the Iphone 4 had a removable SIM card? Hmmm. This is what I did to get a new SIM card for the nexus (thunderbolt SIM was you big). I called customer support and had them order and ship me a new SIM card, the guy I talked to have me some hassle because he didn't know what he was doing but eventually he did it at no cost to me. SIM showed up two days later. Once I got the SIM I went online to register it, no account changes required.

With both lines having unlimited, there's no way of getting around it (aside from paying full price). imo they are going to take it away from everyone once no one under contract has an unlimited plan anyways. I'd look into how much data you use. I've been fine so far with the 2GB plan but I'm also usually on wifi. You don't have to worry about forgetting to turn it on, because there's no point in ever turning it off with our battery life. Just take note that when one of you upgrades, you both should be on the capped plan.

I disagree. I've had "expired" plan options that I signed up for 10 years ago and they've never touched it. As long as I don't make any changes to my account they don't change it.

To address the sim card discussion: All Verizon phones with LTE have sim cards. iphone 4 didn't as it did not have LTE.
Regarding the cancelling of unlimited data, it's been rumored, but so has life on mars. It probably boils down to what Verizon thinks it can get away with. I expect some grassroots campaigns would appear against them if they pulled that kind of crap, though if they can't patch the loopholes that are letting people keep it who knows what they'll do =)

Will a factory unlock note 2 from amazon work on Verizon? If so do you just install your sim card and your up and running?

All you have to do to trick the system is buy the phone from verizon.com, when you receive it in the mail, DON"T activate the new sim card they send you, just swap the sim card from your other phone and boom!!! As soon as you activate the new sim card it updates your verizon profile and you lose unlimited.

Your way should works fine. Transfer the upgrade to your wife, buy the note2 for her and registered it. Allow at least 24 hrs, then call up Verizon and ask them to switch the number. (her number will be the iphone4 and your number will be the note2). If a sim card is requred for the note2, Verizon will send you one for FREE or you could pick one up at any Verizon store (for free). I have done this 3 times for my unlimited data plan.Just make sure that you have the 2gb data plan on your wife's number ($30) before transfer.

No, subsidized. I just read the thread where people are reporting that when they upgrade in store, the My Verizon site instantly went to the new 2GB plan, but people who bought online and swapped SIM's with their current phone instead of using the new SIM still have unlimited.

Yes, swap sim will keep the plan, but you need to have 2 compatible sims. Going from iphone4 to a note2 is not the case here. In the past I did the droid charge to s3 and I need to get the 2 new sims.

Not true. iPhone 4 was sold with unlimited data and I still have a few months on that contract.

Technically, they can bill you for the device's full price if you don't go to the plan you agreed to online. This could happen at any point for at least 6 months so be prepared in case they do...

Yeah, but once no one under contract has unlimited, they probably will mail out a warning and then boot people to a contractless 2GB. They are under no obligation to keep people off-contract with the same plan, and have been pushing this move hard (telling people they will always be grandfathered in and pulling that policy within a year etc)

[INSTR] Unlimited Data via iphone 2g

1. Obtain iPhone 2G (original)
2. Factory wipe/reset.
3. Download latest iTunes from Apple.com
4. Put SIM from GSII in iPhone 2G.
5. Plug iPhone in to PC, go through entire activation process.
6. Put SIM card back in to GSII. Dial *3828# and make sure your plan reflects the newly activated Unlimited feature.
7. Wait a few hours until you receive the text from AT&T letting you know to call them @ 611 and change to a "smartphone plan".
8. Tell AT&T CSR you want to keep your unlimited iPhone plan.
9. Done.
What?

I think he means you buy an iPhone (original one that didn't have 3g) and get at&t to put on the $20 unlimited plan and then having them switch the service to the new phone and carry over the unlimited plan

thats great
can you explain what you did
I have the unlimited plan already, but from what I understand its really easy.
You pop your SIM into a iPhone 2G (edge only, first Gen iPhone), plug into iTunes, iTunes says "Hey, you need unlimited data to use this phone, want me to add for you?", click yes, activate phone, enjoy. Pop the SIM back into your SGS II, call att to ask why data won't work, they provision the correct data type, but still unlimited.
I have heard that if you had a iPhone in the past on that number it won't work, but I don't know for sure. Here the iPhone 2Gs still sell for $100+ for this reason, even if they have cracked screens, as long as they power on it will work.

that sucks..i've been an iPhone loyalist until 2 months ago...i don't think i'm paying 100+ for something that MIGHT work
Can you do it instantly, like swap the sim within 1 hour and call AT&T? or should you leave the sim in the iPhone for like 2-5 days and then switch back to your SGSII? I have the original iPhone laying around at my house and always wanted to try this trick but scared to.

You should give it a shot and report back. What data plan do you have now? If you don't already have the unlimited data the worse they could do is say "no" and put you back on whatever you have now.

Locally here people also rent them out for $20 to activate the unlimited data, then give back.
The only time I have heard it not work is if you currently have an iPhone with the tiered plans.

When I did the iPhone 2G trick a few months ago, I called AT&T too soon to "upgrade" from my iPhone to my Inspire 4G. Immediately after activating the iPhone in iTunes I called-in and the rep said I already had the 2GB plan and no upgrade is needed. I told her I have the iPhone and would really love to keep the unlimited data. She caught on and said "oh, I see what you're trying to do..." She recommended I wait for their system to update and try back, she didn't see the recently activated iPhone w/ unlimited data yet.
I checked AT&T.com over and over and within a couple hours my account showed I had the iPhone 2G with Unlimited Data. After seeing this I called back, said I want to upgrade to my Inspire. I was "grandfathered" with unlimited 4G without any issues. I'm lucky the first rep I got was so cool and didn't try to shut me down!
Overall, it took about 2 hours to switch to the iPhone and switch back.
Ugh ... just need to find an iphone 2g now.
You can 'buy' this service on Ebay if you don't mind giving out some personal info. Just search Ebay for 'ATT unlimited'. My buddy did this for like $30 about a month ago. The Ebay dude activated unlimited on his line with an old iPhone, then my friend just went to an ATT store and said he wanted to activate his GS2 (with SIM removed) on his line, keeping his 'unlimited' of course. They gave him a new SIM and he was out the door.

Upgrade Hardware Swap penalty . .. ?

My wife (iphone) and I (Nexus) both have unlimited on Verizon. She is eligble for an upgrade. I planned on upgrading her line to the note2 and going home and swapping them around to give me the Note2 and reactiving her iPhone on her account..thus techincally giving me the phone I want while keeping my unlmited...
i have read elsewhere that it needs to be on the upgraded line untouch for 6 months....?
Will this not work. . . . .. ?
Seems odd....can't find any documentation around that. . .

You're reply from other post:
This is wrong info bro. Do exactly what you said, get a new sim, and you can have the phone activated in less than an hr. It may cost you $5, but it'll work. I've heard sometimes VZW won't let you switch an unactivated upgrade to a new line because the sim is attached to the #, so I activated my phone on one of my other lines that I used the upgrade on, got a new sim and was good to go.

Thing that is funny is that I was told and.."oh, they can charge you the full retail price".
you can do it after 24hrs, That's how I got my Note 2, just swapped with the wife.
Only if you buy the phone from somewhere other then a corporate store. You HAVE to keep the keep the phone on the urgraded line for 181 days. So just stay away from best buy, wally world, etc. And it will be fine.

I was actually told that from a non-corporate store (http://cellular-only.com)
I asked if it was a Verizon 'rule' or theirs and he said Verizon...
So, do the secondary retailers have their own user agreements. . .. . ?
Yes. Same rules as online mobile sellers. Look at the terms on wire fly.com

place like wirefly or amazon wireless will have such rule (including walmart / bestbuy etc).
but if you directly buy from verizon, you can swap it even immediately after.
which was what I did for some lines. no penalty and unlimited plan stays.

Right. I think "Premium Retailers" are the same as Walmart/Amazon/WireFly. I have read elsewhere that Best Buy doesn't have the 181 Day thing. Just throwing that out there...

I did exactly what you want to do.
I used an upgrade on my daughter's line (she has a feature phone) and put the Note 2 on it.
I've done this whole thing before with other phones/numbers on my account and it's never been an issue. The guys said sure, we can use your daughter's upgrade and put the phone on your acct... so he started doing it.
I said wait a minute.. just to verify, you are NOT messing with my data plan right? He said, of course you'll lose unlimited.
UNACCEPTABLE!
He said.. the only way to do it is to put the Note 2 on her line.. and walk out of the store with it.. what you do after that is your business. In other words, they would not switch the SIM for me.
So, I let them activate her line with the Note 2.. left the store and swapped the SIM as I took my 2nd or 3rd step out of the store. lol No 60 mos, or 24 hours.
I was lazy and didn't re-activate my daughter's phone for a day or 2, so she had my Nexus. I then went online and switched her line back to her feature phone.
SO, yeah, it worked just fine. I now have an AMAZING phone and kept my unlimited data!

it was my first phone w/ a 4g sim. like i said, get the phone... activate it... and buy a new sim unless you want to wait 24 hrs. I didn't have any luck with VZW helping me with this, so i just bought another sim and activated it on that line. they told me the line i used to upgrade HAS to activate the phone first. so i activated/sim was locked in with that # for 24 hrs. i said can i just buy a new sim? they said sure, bought a new sim and set it up there.

So whats the significance of this 24 hours then?
Is it possible to wait out the 24 hours and use the same SIM card to swap numbers?
Also, why do you keep discussing buying SIM cards? They're 100% free. You can walk into a store and get one, and a much easier way imho is to get one online. Just do everything yourself.
But please explain to me the above topics as I am doing EXACTLY what you did pretty much. I added 2 lines to my account, both have tiered 2 GB data plans, me and my wife have unlimited on our primary lines, we bought the Note 2's on the new lines and they arrive tomorrow.
My plan is to activate them on my primary lines with unlimited data and place 2 dummy phones on the new lines so I can remove the data plans.
Hows this process going to go then? Can I just activate the Note 2's using the provided SIM's for my primary lines? Or do I HAVE to activate them on the new lines first?

Sims are tied to phone numbers. Activate it on new line, then go to store and st you want to try it on your other line and need a SIM for it. They can swap them. Did this between iPhone and thunderbolt for the wife

if you only have one sim they aren't able to switch the phone # attached to the sim instantly. it takes some time to be able to do it. the fix for this is go buy an sim card. obviously if you have one attached to your other phone already, do not have to worry about buying a new sim.
pretty much do this, turn them on, let them activate ( i tried to let vzw switch the imei # to my line before activating, and they said the phone HAS to be activated on the other line first ), then went to the store and bought a new sim/switched out the sim cards and i was able to use my phone.

Given New SIM at VZW Store, Get Unlmtd Data Back?

So when I got my phone I was given a new SIM card. After doing some reading it sounds like had I kept my old SIM card I could have kept my unlimited data. Anyway to get that back if I call and argue with them?
No your sim card makes no difference in keeping unlimited data. Its a feature in the billing system that auto removes if you put a 2 year contract on a line when you buy a new phoneand there is no one at the store who can put it back on

Right. But from what I've heard, if you keep your SIM card instead of using the one you get when you order online there's a glitch in the system that never changes from Unlimited to 2GB.
I have absolutely no source for my comment, but I can't imagine they would have kept your old SIM, and I find it even less probable that you will be able to talk to into giving it back to you if you did have it. They are trying aggressively to push us data suckers off unlimited data

either way you wouldn't win that argument based on a glitch in verizon's system you were knowingly trying to exploit.

Yea if he's within 14 days that's what I would do (on day 9, so far I love this phone, I just hope we can unlock the bootloader and have some decent, current roms)
anyway, I am holding onto my unlimited data like a deathgrip, so I added a new line, with the note (ok, so I am spending $40 more a month in fees) and put my main line SIM into a 4620L hotspot I bought off ebay,. Win win!!
(I travel a lot so this is my main internet while on the go, It always stays with me and my phone, laptop, Vita, tablets and whatever has 4g instead of my phone being dedicated to doing that. Makes my life a lot easier)

[Q] Upgrade question

I'm considering upgrading to a DNA in the near future. our family plan has two lines, both up for upgrade. The user of one line isn't in a hurry to upgrade. The other line still has unlimited data. My question, if I upgrade the non-unlimited line, will I be able to activate the DNA on the unlimited line instead or will the SIM card already be programmed with the information from the limited line?
Upgrade on the non unlimited line then just swap the sims.

Neither line has a phone that uses a SIM currently. And if I upgrade the unlimited line, I'll lose unlimited.
I was more interested in whether the sim is locked to a phone number before I ever activate the device it goes in.
Thank you for the reply though!

The sim is locked to a phone number. But you can simply go ask for a SIM for your unlimited line and then pop it in the DNA. Then you can just ask them to reactivate the old phone on the non unlimited plan.
You are over complicating this.

I'm sorry if my question is convoluted. I've always been on Verizon and never used more than one phone at a time. I have no experience with SIM cards or intimate knowledge of their workings.
My main concern is keeping that unlimited data plan. Is there a cost for getting a SIM card at the Verizon store? Are they likely to use that as an excuse to put me on a tiered plan rather than unlimited?
only if someone esle is on the plan and they or you wanna upgrade. but if your on your own then i dont see why you cant either pay full price and keep unlimited data or maybe buy a sims card but i dunno. do you have a sim card on a device now if so buy dna and transfer sim card over to dna

Just go into Verizon, upgrade to the DNA on your non unlimited line. Then say you would like to use this phone on your other line(the unlimited one), they will give you a SIM and activate it. Then just have them reactivate the phone that was previously on the non unlimited line. Again, your making a bigger deal about this then it actually is. Just go into Verizon and tell them what you are doing and they will be happy to help you. They will probably try to talk you into a tiered data plan because that's their job, but unless you tell them that you want to do that they will leave your unlimited data alone.

I tried to do this exact same thing when I got my DNA, and VZW absolutely would not do this for me, at 3 different locations. Ended up ordering online in order to get it accomplished. Hope you have better luck than I did.

I got my 1st smart phone from Verizon through online and calling the 1800 number. All the associates were friendly and helpful. Several of them reminded me a couple times that if I change my plan I will lose my unlimited data. None of them ever tried to trick me into getting rid of it. I feel confident that they will try to help you and not screw you over.

[Q] [Verizon] Keeping Unlimited Data

Hi guys so just like most of you in here, I'm waiting on the galaxy s4 for Verizon. I am currently eligible for an upgrade, but I have a question regarding a a possible loophole for keeping my unlimited data. I share the account with my father along with 3 other lines. If I were to transfer the upgrade to another one of the lines and "upgrade" that line and then deactivate/reactivate on my line, would I be able to keep my unlimited data? And how would I go about doing this online with the preorder? Thanks for your time!

There is a thread on here about keeping unlimited data. Do a search and you should find it.
You will lose the unlimited data on the line that's ready to upgrade, if you don't transfer it. If you decide to transfer the upgrade from the line that has the unlimited data, you'll be safe & won't lose it. I hope this helps.

Do what I did. I just bit the bullet and went to shared data but sold my unlimited data plans first.
I sold my wifes and mine for $750 combined. It will take years for me to make up that difference as I WFH three days a week so I am around wifi pretty much 5 out of 7 days.
Thanks for the feedback guys. I am going to try to just upgrade one of the other lines that's on a basic connection and then just activate the phone on my line when I get it. When I go to preorder online, it asks if I will be purchasing a SIM card and if not it asks for the SIM ID that I will be using. Should I purchase another SIM card or just give them mine? Im not sure of the process so I'm iffy about giving them my SIM ID because I'm not sure what that will do. any help is much appreciated.

Well, if the S4 is unlocked & your old SIM card is a micro SIM, you'll be fine using that. You might have some issues using your old SIM if the Verizon S4 isn't the unlocked version...

We're talking about Verizon here not the international version.

How do you "sell" these plans? I have two unlimited lines and one 4GB/$30 line that I would like to sell off, as we will likely not buy the phones at full price.
If you have an upgrade available on another line you can use that, but you need to first activate it onthe line you bought it for, then transfer it to the unlimited line.
Another prospective option ive considered and decided against is starting a new line, paying $199.99 plus $30 activation, and then immediately terminating for $350. You get it for $70 plus tax cheaper than paying full retail.
That $199 ends up being just over $300 when you finally click submit. $50 MIR makes it $249.99 to start.

I've had success in transfering the upgrade to the basic line on my account that did not have data. Once you get the phone, reactivate the basic phone on the basic line. Then activate the new phone on your original upgrade line with unlimited data.
OT: I ended up ditching unlimited. The extra $$/mon savings was worth more than keeping it. I'm on wifi for about 90% of my data anyway. My employer-provided (yes, I keep separation btwn work/personal) phone still has unlimited and I can tether to it if I need to.
Hey guys; new here, awaiting the Verizon GS4
I had luck when the iPhone 5 came out keeping my unlimited Data. We have 5 lines with two still on unlimited, 3 on the 2gb. With 5 we almost always have at least one available for an upgrade. I was on a Galaxy Nexus with unlimited and I upgraded another line that had a 2gb plan. When the phone arrived I simply did the switch online with the new imei and the nano sim on my unlimited line replacing my Nexus. Everything went smooth.
Since then I purchased a nano sim adapter and have often switched back and forth between the iPhone and the Nexus; I'm Nerdy that way. No problem switching the sim between phones. I run whichever phone I want depending on my mood. My nexus is fully rooted and running the Sourcery Custome ROM and the latest Franco Kernal.
What I did was this: My wifes ona share everything plan while I still have unlimited. We added a line to HER share everything plan, got the S4 @200$... And I will just swap devices on VZW website from the bionic I use now. My mother in law works for VZW said I should be able to just put my unlimited SIM in the S4, and it will work right away...However, may need to activate it on the line line, deactivate it, put on mine.... (We have tablets for our kids just incase they require a device on that new line, we will simply give one of those access)
Good luck...

what happens to the basic line after deactivating it ( since u have to put it on a data plan for it to have smartphone...) do u have to call and cancle the data or will that happen automatically after deactivating smartphone and putting old "dumb" phone back on it? will this result in a fee?
Thanks in advanced to anyone who can help...
