Uhm....
This has to be the most agrivating phone to root in my years of rooting..
Windows 8 will not reconize htc drivers! Unsupported on this operating system it says..
Grrrrrrr i hate windows 8 and how incompatible it is with everything..

adb says it's out of date and "killing...". But still proceeds forward. Is that normal for Windows 8. I downloaded all the necessary files and they're all up to date, as far as I know.
So instal htc sync? Why isnt that in the instructions for rooting? Im trying to root it still... Fail...
Already have it installed and its not finding the dna..
Ugh.. Is there a dumbed down version of this rooting method?

I rooted on windows 8 with minimal trouble, on an Archos 9 with I think a single core 1ghz cpu, and 1 gig of DDR ram. I also rooted my transformer prime using the same tablet. Albeit using the paid pro version, I would not try it on the free previews.
Good luck with the iPhone 5 if you choose to walk away from the fastest phone since sliced bread. $h!+ is junk! Lol its exactly the same as iPhone4s without the cool new shape only slightly bigger and a tad faster. But same restricted, lame a$$, never changing, way too out of date to be relivant IOS.

If you read .... This is what you need to do install HTC sync only for the drivers .. before you try anything with your DNA delete HTC sync , but font touch the drivers ... This phone isn't that hard if people would learn to read the entire directions before starting .... :banghead: Maybe you needing a dumbed down method is telling you something huh ... Not to be rude but these REAL phones are maybe too complicated . Please don't root your phone, because all your going to do is screw it up and take it back on someone else's dime . Get your ibore 5 ... And hey bud , are you rooting or unlocking the bootloader? Because one has to be done before the other ...

Well they didnt, so im having issues with adb recognizing the dna.
Sent from my HTC6435LVW using xda app-developers app
the process on a win8 machine can be taxing, if you let it.
downloading adb setup didn't work for me either.
if you plug your phone in to pc, it will install drivers and sync. (you might need to change usb port if not cooperating)
I also had the adb out of date and killing issue, it didn't prevent me from unlocking bootloader but, it did cause a problem during root process. specifically when trying to load SU. because adb kept killing itself, SU wouldn't get installed.
I solved that issue by removing htc sync, and leaving the drivers installed.
restart adb, use task manager and end adb.exe process. if it continues, look in task manager again for anything like android tools, droid explorer etc;
gl
This phone has its flaws too... Its choppy, some major apps not yet supported, force closing on Facebook, Wish android would get its stuff together too! Tons of addware all over there apps, and 30% or more of the android marketplace is filled with fake or virus apps

Yes you definitely have to use a full fledged Linux OS, VM will not be good. You could try a livecd but I would be a bit scared of doing that myself. I have Ubuntu installed in a different partition on my main HDD but if you don't want to do that there's an easy solution:
http://www.ubuntu.com/download/desktop/windows-installer
That will download an .exe that you run and it will install Ubuntu in a file on your Windows PC. When you reboot it will let you choose between Windows 7 and Ubuntu. It will take 2 mins of installation at most. Read on if you're interested in how exactly it works.
It creates a file within Windows of a predetermined size (this will be the 'hard drive' space for Ubuntu and all the data you put in it, so make it plentiful at least 10 gigs). When you reboot your PC and choose Ubuntu, it's technically opening up your NTFS Windows folder and considering the file it made earlier as a hard drive. Now this IS different than a VM because your computer is completely running Ubuntu and all the USB drives and ports are connected to it. The reason you shouldn't use a VM is because usually when a usb device gets disconnected under a VM things go haywire and that's not something you want when doing very risky things to your phone. Also the only difference between this installation and a regular Ubuntu installation (actually partitioning your HDD/SSD) is the hard drive performance. Windows uses NTFS and Linux doesn't bode well with that. If you like Ubuntu or are going to have to use it again in the future for whatever reason, I recommend actually installing it on your HDD, use ext4 partition for it if you install it.

The un-bricking tool is your only option, unless you want to go to sprint and get a new phone. I you don't already use ubuntu you will find that this makes the process extremely simple and it's not hard at all to do this. Here is a link for the un-bricking tool:

How do "you" discribe root to your non-tech savy friends? I am looking for fun ways to explain the basics without having people fall asleep on me.
Sent from the grassy knoll using xda app-developers app
I describe root like this: Root gives you full access to your phone's features that are otherwise locked out by the carriers or manufacturers. If they seem interested, I then go into details of the features and benefits like a salesman (my retail background from my college days I guess). I talk about backing up data, etc.
Non root: Standard user on computer
Root: Administrator user on computer
Easiest way to explain for me.
See how my phone's faster than yours even though yours has higher specs? That's 'cos I've got root!
The Roots are a hip hop, soul band who are well known for their eclectic approach to music including a touch of jazz. They have collaborated on many occations with different vocalists (personal favorite being the cover of Hard Times done with John legend). They are currently acting as the house band for Jimmy Kimmel's late night show.

if you are getting it from online or any other way through the mail it will most likely have the pos ota that cant be rooted yet (i'm in the same boat and while the stock rom is pretty good the verizon and htc bloatware is annoying to say the least)
Most of the bloatware can be disabled on stock although it's not removing it you can prevent it from being seen and running in your phone.

Had some odd complications with the one click casual , I know user error right.
I feel I can do this manually if I knew the proper sequence of what to push and install to the phone .
Im pretty confident in my skills with ADB, Fastboot, and Odin.
I also am aware of the dangers . So if anyone would like to chime in Id be grateful.
I have already downloaded the lastest nightly CASUAL jar and extracted it. Just need to know what needs to go where and so forth.

Uhhh.. I had problems with it too cause I run a weird distro that was angering it with paths and versions of various things.
I would up unpacking it, and repacking it and running it that way. It took several attempts to get all the paths right and so fourth. Can you post some straces or logs here and we can see what's horking up?
IIRC, there's a master script in there that does most of the heavy lifting and a lot of dynamically compiled progs and a few statics once you extract it all by hand.

Well you would have to send it off to MobileTechVideos to do it.
And just in case you are wondering the JTAG they use for our phones is called a Riff Box, you can find them on eBay for $50-$200 depending on how lucky you are.
The way it works, just in case you don't know how it works with phones, is they pull the MoBo and solder the Riffs little interface wires (they're just individual pieces of ribbon cable) to the phones JTAG contacts. You can actually build an interface for your phones MoBo for the JTAG with breadboard that way you don't have to solder directly to it, AdamOutler has a video in which he uses a Riff box and uses the custom breadboard piece to JTAG the phone (I think it was the VZW S3) back to life.
