Try this:
On your Lumia 920, hit the "Music & Video" live tile to start the Music/Video app. You should see at the bottom of the screen a PLAY button, on the actual bottom menu strip. Press that. Your phone, if it's like mine, will freeze up and you won't be able to do anything with it.
I have about 4,000 tunes on my phone. I get the impression that this button, which seems to be a "play all my music randomly", takes a while to sift through your music collection and create such an enormous randomized play list. In the meantime, you can't use your phone. This could be anywhere from seconds to several minutes.
I first noticed this when connecting my Bluetooth headset to the phone - if no music was cued up, it would do this "play all my music randomly" automatically, but at first I didn't realize that's what it was doing - all I knew was my phone had frozen up, so I did a soft reset.
Have a go and see if your phone does it too. If so, it's quite a big bug - let's hope the Portico update cures it!
If you've already played a song, it just starts playing that song again... unless there's a play arrow somewhere else I'm missing...
Perhaps if you select one song and play it, once, this will not happen to you?

No it doesn't. Not on my phone anyway. It specifically starts playing all your songs in random order. I think you are not using the right PLAY button. It's the one right at the bottom when you first start up the Music & Video app.

Yep. That's the one. Here:
How about you screenshot what you're clicking? I tried "recent" and "new" as well (where I had to tap ... to get to a play arrow.

Thanks for the confirmation. When you press it, does your phone freeze up? How many tracks have you got on the phone?

that does what I said. If you pick one song and play it, and then pause or stop it, does the behavior change? Do you have music pass?

Can't seem to get my last.fm to play on my streak. I'm up on the official 2.2 froyo and it just isn't playing. It acts like it is going to and just sits there. Of the 70 or so times that I've tried it I've gotten one song to play part of the way through just once.
Anyone know what's going on with this?
Thanks a lot
Don't bother with last.fm they went to a subscription only service unless you're on a windows phone. Ditch them, give them a 1 star rating, leave a bad comment, and uninstall.

are you using stock music player? if you do, that wont work.
Use DoubleTwist from the market, it works perfect with last.fm

See, I downloaded it and set it as my default music player and last.fm is still not functioning. I'm starting to wonder if I'm actually setting the default player properly.
for the other comment, I actually pay for the subscription so it really isn't about that. Say what you will but I love last.fm much more than pandora and, quite frankly, the subscription is so cheap i could really care less about paying for it. My feeling is if you like something support it.
bump.
Still having this issue. When I open the Last.fm app it just sits there saying "tuning to station." It will act like it is playing but the progress bar stays blank as well as the time. However, the artist picture does show up and it will change songs as if it were actually playing.
Well, the plot thickens. I finally got it to play two songs today but that was about it and then it went back to being silent. I'm guessing that there must be something up with the app itself.
On my Droid X, when I was streaming music via Bluetooth to my car stereo and using Google Navigation, when the girl came on to update my directions, the music would pause temporarily and allow the directions to be heard clearly. On my EVO, I just get a jumbled mess that sounds like she is talking underwater while the music plays. I'm using Poweramp and I really like it (been a fan since the first week I owned the DX) and would prefer not to switch, but I will if that's the issue.
Any suggestions or settings I should try to fiddle with?
Thanks in advance for any help!

i know what you mean but you should be able to clearly hear the navigation over the music. my OG evo would pause the music while the navigator spoke, now it just lowers the volume of the music by a lot and the navigator speaks over the music. i would say if the music is not lowering for you then try a different music app, if you have the same issue, then try a factory reset, or flash a different rom, if you do a factory reset then make sure to clear your google wallet settings.
It was PowerAmp...sucks, because I really like it and I don't really feel like paying for another music player, but the stock "Music" UI sucks and the widget is garbage.
Try WinAmp, it is a great music player. Granted I don't know if you will have the same problem or not but it is free so give it a shot.

It's power amp.. As much as I love it I had to stop using it for this very reason. Went back to stock app and I actually kind of like it.

Thanks for the heads up. I was about to buy it too, but that's a deal breaker for me too. Have you emailed the developer?

Ive been suffering of the same issue for some time now and I just emailed the developer about it. I love poweramp too and I would hate giving it up for anything else.
But, has anyone tried winamp? Those that have, can you provide feedback?

Headed to work, gonna give WinAmp a shot. I'll report back tomorrow.
WinAmp works fine, UI is decent, couldn't find any skins in the Play Store. Anybody tried PlayPro?
Poweramp just got an update this am, ill be heading back on post later today and will test if any improvements were made in that are.

just tried PlayerPro.
A decent group of free skins, widgets and a Digital Sound Processor (equalizer). I keep my music files pretty basic, Artist name and genre...no cover art, album title, track number...etc. PlayerPro added "artwork" based on this small amount of info. Pretty cool.
The only downside verses WinAmp and the stock Music app is the PlayerPro only "quiets" the music for Nav, it doesn't silence it.
Since I'm playing Guinea Pig, any other music players anyone is curious about?

I got that update too...while I was at work and I forgot about it until now...gonna go give it a test.
EDIT: Got caught up by the post-time-limit...tested, doesn't sound "jumbled", but doesn't "quiet" or pause the music...still no help.
I had the same problem with the same combo love poweramp its my only paid app I clicked off beats and viola clear as a bell. The music lowers volume then the directions are spoken and the music returns to normal volume. So if you love poweramp just shut off beats when using navigation

Have you checked your PowerAmp settings?
Go to Settings -> Audio -> Audio Focus.
Make sure both Short Audio Focus Change and Permanent Audio Focus Change is checked. I believe it should be on by default but I've noticed in some cases whenever I flash a new ROM on my original EVO, it's not checked by default and I've had to enable it.
RobertBohannon and wolfpack15, I will give them both a try and see what happens.
Update on PlayerPro and WinAmp:
PlayerPro does the same as PowerAmp, it's just not as severely distorted.
WinAmp is almost perfect, but my head unit will only control track selection if the app is open and on screen.

Nail on the head, Short Audio Focus was unchecked.
Thanks so much, everything is working great!
Ok, when I play LOCAL files from the phone, no issues.
When I play music from the cloud (streamed), about 10 seconds before the end of the song, there is a pause, almost a skip before it ends and starts the next track.
Can anyone verify if this is happening to them?
Thanks!
Not one person can test? Please?
I have the same Problem. But it exists only on Windows Phone 8, not on my xbox or Windows 8 Notebook.

I see very rarely. That it even happens at all would indicate a confirmation for you, however, I don't see it on every song, nor do I see regularly at all.

Thanks both of you.
I see this on EVERY track that I stream. Even ones that I have already streamed before.
I'm escalating this to the product group to see if can be done about it.
Thanks!

Bring up card. Press pause. Swipe away. The press pause is the key there. Also works for other apps like Pandora, etc.

I started using a custom rom and I'm guessing that's what's broke it. Pretty depressing cause I like to change my music from my wrist....
I'm gonna have a look through the full rom and see if I can hazard a guess at the app that's missing
There's a new app that controls music playing on the phone and it has 4 different methods if one doesn't work.. It's called Musiccontrol on my watch
I can't play music on my phone either try reset still no luck it worked twice when I first used it but now nothing

I returned the watch. ...
Worked out the there is an app which crashes. It happened the 2nd I used titanium backup to uninstall some apps so I'm assuming something I was uninstalling was breaking that feature.
Just my advice
Feel like an idiot but i just discovered the toggle between the gear music player & phone music control.. The app i mentioned works too, but no need for it obviously
Did anyone hear of a fix for this?
My Gear S Music Player worked a few times, but will no longer control media on my Galaxy S5...
I installed the Ultimate Music Control app and that seems to work... (but no longer have a working widget)
Fixed my Gear S music controller problem
i had the same problem for days. Its a problem with the widget. Just go to the actual place where all the apps are (swipe up) and scroll down to the music player and tap it. I guess it just kind of restarts the widget because as soon as I tapped the app the music started playing again and the widget refreshed with the album artwork. Got my Google Play music working again too. Hope this helps.
still works, just hidden
I may be late to the game, but I just got a Gear S today. It took me a while (and a few apps) before I figured out that the Media Player on the Gear S has a second remote function. It can be accessed by pressing the 3 vertical dots on the bottom right of the display...if you don't see it (or the controls, just tap the screen). After pressing the dots, a menu will pop up with Mobile Device and Gear choices. Choosing Mobile Device puts the Gear into remote control mode for music on the phone (works great with Pandora, but no album art or like/dislike functions), while choosing Gear gives control of music on the watch.
holy cow! I even bought this app called beatObox for this purpose... wth, my Gear S supports this all along... Gear S Mustic Player (as a controller) works with PowerAmp it just doesn't display the album art.
Ultimate fix for the stock music control apk all you do is tap 3dots on right top side, click mobile device, tap screen 3 times or so, tap play periodicly until music plays and skips and boom there you go. Works with any player, just no artwork...
