How to root using UBUNTU Linux distro?? - HTC Amaze 4G

Ok.. I have windows 8 and have not been able to root my phone Asked for help here, I have decided to install Ubuntu because some of the responses was.. "why not root it using linux".. well I was unable to find a how to guide on rooting HTC Amaze using Ubuntu.. so if someone can help me do this. Any suggestions would be appreciated..
This would be helpful for the some of us that only have Windows 8 and access to Ubuntu..

Any suggestions would be appreciated

You don't need a computer too root you need one to unlock your boot loader then flash a custom recovery

I see you didn't read the link I posted on op, windows 8 doesn't recognize drivers. HENCE I'm looking for alternative method which was suggested Linux.

You don't need drivers you use fastboot. Fast boot and the htcdev website is all you need. I see you didn't read the bible, any of the tutorials or the HTC dev website

I tried it from site and wouldn't work. I admit to not reading the Bible. Will post after doing so.

I came onto a snag following the instructions..Stuck on this step while installing the SDK, it seems that Java runtime doesn't work well on windows 8 (see attached screen pic for error).

Honestly, you don't even need the entire Android SDK. It's just a few files like adb and fastboot.
Once I installed the HTC drivers on Win8, everything worked fine.
For Linux, you only need fastboot which I've attached.

I haven't been able to get the files.. they were not in the zip file I downloaded from the site (SDK zip) the tutorial said I needed to install adb to get them.
Can you break it down for me on how you got the files?

If you're still having trouble (really shouldn't because I didn't have any), just boot into the Linux Live USB/CD and download the fastboot file I attached in my above post.

How'd you get around the win8 Linux boot block?
Or are you stuck running off usb/live live cd? (still no dual boot)

What does this do exactly? If it installs the kernel without having to flash it from recovery, might be useful. Save 30 seconds or so of install time.

Keep it up-to-date with latest popular kernels/roms and I wouldn't mind downloading it.
I have no problem doing the commands manually, but if it can auto download and install kernels for me I'd love it just because I'm lazy

Tried using it to flash a kernel and it fails. When it asks to type ready or not yet, I type in "ready" and it says that "then" is not a recognized command. Must be a typo or error in the command scripting.
EDIT: Actually even the Read me option doesn't work. It just closes the command prompt. What OS did you test this on? XP? I'm using Windows 7 and there are likely some command syntax differences that make it incompatible.

Are you flashing the boot img in fastboot before installing in recovery? Most sense roms are over 500mb and have the same kernel so it boots up fine without flashing the boot img before hand. Aosp roms will require you to flash the boot img before hand if you're s-on

^This. You will need to put the boot.img in your ADB tools folder on your computer, put the phone in fastboot USB mode and use the command 'fastboot flash boot boot.img' to flash the kernel to your phone. A better solution is to get S-off so you don't have to mess with flashing the kernel separately .

Agreed. Best thing to do is get S-OFF! :good: :good: :good:
S-OFF is cake now. No reason NOT to do it. It will make all of this EASIER for you. Just up and do it.
You have two possible methods to do this: DirtyRacun or Facepalm. The latter can be done in five minutes.

From the thread I linked previously -
"You can also come by irc for support or just to say thanks: #FacePalm http://chat.andirc.net:8080/?channels=facepalm"
I know it can be scary, but you have to read the forum(s) and/or watch the video(s). Since you took the trouble to register on this site, don't rush and take the time to learn and understand by reading, reading, and more reading. It's not an overnight thing, but it does come eventually. It took me 6 months before I began to have a decent understanding of what I was doing with my first PC...
No offense, but we can't hold your hand as you cross the street. You have to take those first steps yourself. Read carefully, make notes that YOU will understand a day later... but you must take the responsibility for what happens to your phone.
Can you tell I'm a parent? :silly:

If you are S-Off then the phone is unlocked and you can flash the recovery provided you know what you are doing.

Your unlocked so now go in the app store and get "ROM manager" which will flash you ClockwordMod Recovery. (Easiest way IMO)

The easiest method really is to dl the Ubuntu 32 bit iso and make a bootable cd/usb of it and do moonshine from within the live portion of that iso. takes all of 30 mins and most of the time completes without issues everytime like clockwork.

No if you have Asian amaze and if you are on GB stock Rom

I think you can. You just have to pop in the live cd and run control bear. When s off I'd complete you can just turn off your computer, or download Ubuntu from windows (wubi install) and you can remove Ubuntu as if it were a program from windows. So even if you have to install it you can remove it fairly easily if you install ubuntu with wubi.
