Hi! i have just bought a galaxy s3! Before i had a galaxy s scl and im familiarized with custom kernels and roms but with this phone i feel like newbie. I see there are a lot of custom kernels and i wanted to know if to put a new kernel is like before. Put the tar file in pda and flash with odin.
Another question is what differences are with stock kernels.
Also i would like to ask about roms, which is the best rom actually?
Thanks
Now most of the kernels can be flashed with cwm recovery. Just go through kernel instructions and how to flash on your phone.
There are lots of different kernels available. You can find the features and difference in their topic itself. Some are good for performance, some are for speed, some are battery life. You will have to find best kernel for youself. I am using syiah 1.8.
Best Rom discussions are prohibited here. You can try different rooms and see which one works for you. If you like vanilla android then try cm10.

I have a few questions sorry if its a repost but id rather make sure I get a good answer to those questions then any other variant of them.
I got a galaxy s2 a week ago and I feel like the battery life is really bad and the phone heats alot sometimes.... (BTW this is my first smartphone EVER) I was wondering which one of all these custom ROMs out there is the best for the galaxy s2? Which one will give me the smoothest experience with a good battery life and fix that heating problem?
Also, I have the Canadian bell's version so MUGKG2... When I look at ROMs all I see is XXKH3 or XXKE7, etc... Basically how and what version do I have to use/install to get a custom ROM? (P.S I know how Odin works and I know how to root since my phone is already rooted)
And what is the latest Android version possible to get on the galaxy s2? I heard something about 4.0 but I think the latest version possible to install is the 2.3.4 am I right? Also, every ROM is 2.3.4 right? Or do I have to flash a 2.3.4 (or 4.0 depending on the latest version) kernel on the phone?
Thanks for your time and have a good day!!!!!!!
Nick
1. there's no exact answer to which rom or kernel gives the best batt life. u should actually test them to see which fits your preference. there are also threads here which does benchmarkings and testing out batt life. try searching for them.
2. when u install a custom rom, it will say on their thread on what baseband version they based their rom. for example, LeoMar's ROM is based on KH3, etc. the rom chooses it for you basically.
3. the latest is 2.3.4, and almost all custom ROMs are based on 2.3.4. no need to flash anything extra
Ok so do I actually have to find a XXKG2 or MUGKG2 based ROM or I can take anything? And from personal experience which one do you think is the best one?
you can actually take in anything (at least your phone's getting an updated baseband version thru the custom roms).
i'm not quite sure how the different versions of the baseband affects my phone. i don't notice any difference in performance actually.
Aight!!! Thanks man. Which one do you recommend?
you can try using the dlev2 rom version 1.2 , its indeed great and also has good battery life

cognition or litening rom can be good choices to start with.
leomar rom gives a lot of customization options because it has a kitchen app on the android market.
My recommendation is that you read some more, get comfortable before you flash anything on your device, know what you are about to get into instead of going on someone else's opinion, the questions you ask are of someone who doesn't fully understand what they are about to do.
It helps when you read a lot, you are able to think your own way through if something doesn't go exactly as planed, else you would have to come right back here to ask a million questions
you can find official firmware here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1075278
as a few posts above i agree what that person said..do a bit more reading before you start flashing. i can remember the time when i wanted to start flashing and rooting and when i did not back up the stock rom the first time i panicked and i did not know what to do and how to get back the stock rom...funny now but back then not so funny..
anyway research play with your stock rom for a while and then flash...for custom rom i would suggest a few...Im using BatistaRom 3.7.7 its the smoothest fastest and battery efficient rom i have used so far...even when i go and try other roms i always come back to this one. For battery as well VillainRom 2.4.2 is one heck of a custom rom and the battery life on that bad boy is wicked..
With regarding kernels again it varies...read the threads of the rom you are interested in flashing and see what people suggest on them..
good luck and be careful when rooting and flashing. any help you need throw me a PM..
Yeah, there are like tons of ROMs and customizations for SGS2 and all major developers are cooking something or the other for our GS2...
Selection of ROM depends only on taste. Some people wants battery life, some people wants only speed and performance. So ask yourself, what kinda ROM you need. One built from scratch, one modded from stock, AOSP?
I use GingerMod Vanilla 0.4. Suits my taste
Hello
I'm new to this...
I was wondering if I can install the SpeedMod Kernel on my SGS2??
Why this Question:
When I rooted my decive with cf-root and odin I have chosen the Kernel with the same "version" my stock kernel had.
Now I'm not sure if I can install any sgs2 kernel (in this case SpeedMod) or if the "version" is important.
I think that all SGS2 Phones should have the same hardware so I sould be able to use any Kernel. Is that right?
What do I have to be aware of, when I choose a new kernel?
Thanks
Ditschi
Yes you can, don't worry about it. Versions don't care much after all.
Thanks a lot thought that. I'll flash he kernel tomorow.
But what im interested in:
When you say the version doesn't matter why are there so many versions of cf-root? Is'nt that a lot of extra work? Why not useing only one kernel?
Cheers
Ditschi
That's for people who want to stay as close as possible to stock.
The developers compile their kernel to work with any Samsung or TouchWiz based rom.
CF Root extracts the kernels from the specific rom, adds in the goodies and presents it to us for use to root the respective rom. So basically what you have is the stock kernel with root added among other things
ah ok...
That makes sense. Thanks a Lot for the help
Yes, i realize this has been asked over 9000 times before (though a search for "best" didnt return anything), and yes i know best is different for everyone, so i dont expect a definate answer, im just looking for some opinions.
Which rom/kernel packages have you used, what are you using now, and why? what makes the one your using now better (or worse) than previous packages?
Im no stranger to flashing kernels / roms, however to me they all seem to be very similar, just different theming (i use Go Launcher anyways, so thats a non-issue.)
Lets get some general feedback which Kernels / roms you like and which ones you tried and hated!
I use the is this thread for real ROM, coupled with the I can't believe you made a new thread about this even after knowing there's loads already, kernel.
I find it works really well, much better than the previous threads.
Like i said, i used the search, nothing popped up. If you know better keywords to search for i'll gladly read through previous threads instead of waiting for people to post yet again.
Theres no way i can sift through the thousands of posts that are here when the search wont help me.
Let's see, from the past few days, searching for "kernel rom" in the Q&A section.
Poll: Which custom ROM(s) (any ver.) you usually flash on I9100?
[Q] which rom is best?
[Q] SGS2 Fast ROM & Kernel Combo (5333 Quadrant).
Which rom its better or the best?
[Q] What is best ROM for SII ?
[Q] which is the best combination of kernal ver and Rom for good battery life??
Which ROM to pick up? Too spoilt for choice!.

Best relies on so many variables flash as what's best for someone else isn't likely to be best for you! Make a backup and flash away...............
I know this might get flamed but, what Kernel do YOU have the best results on, i know everyone uses their phones different, have different apps and all. but as an individual which Kernel do you achieve the most satisfaction out of?
ATM using RotBox 1.2
Latest Fluxi Kernel
About a week ago I switched to the rooted XWLPG stock Sammy kernel (using with an XWLPG based ROM) and the results have surprised me. Battery life and scrolling performance are as good as any other custom kernel I've used, and there are no bugs I've come across. I know that a couple of other people have complained about the smoothness of this kernel, but I have not experienced that problem, even when running underclocked at 1 GHz.
first of all, questions go in the q&a section.
and for us to recommend a kernel, one would have to know, what rom you use. you cannot use certain ics kernels with gingerbread and you cannot use stock kernels with aosp.
and how do you get a thanks for a question like that?

I thanked him accidentally. Gave you one too for your trouble.
Just try them yourself. A good place to start would be to sort the forum by "Stats".

Just wondering on performance between stock and custom roms. Pros & Cons etc
Generally I run custom roms on my phones (i9000 & I9300) but have stuck with stock on my tablet (P7500 currently ICS).
I don't want to run a custom rom just for the sake of it and if there are issues I would prefer to keep it stock.
anyway thanks in advance to those that can help out here.
Since you are already running custom roms i believe you already know the pros and cons between a stock and a custom rom.
Just have a read in the forums and if you find that there are issues in custom roms for this tablet just don't flash it.
Thanks and thread closed.
