Just got a Sony Ericsson X10 and it has Android 1.6. I want to upgrade to the latest version of android and want to enable features like multi touch.. How do i upgrade my phone? I dont know anything about android and most of the posts here have just confused me
Hi - and welcome..
Go to the Sony Ericsson website and download and install SEUS (Sony Ericsson Update Service) to your PC..
Fire that up and follow the onscreen instructions (carefully)..
That will get you upto the latest version of the firmware for your phone..
It may NOT be the latest available firmware though depending on whether your phone is customised by a specific carrier/ network?
If it doesn't upgrade you then look settings and about phone then tell us the country and customisation info in there..
Good luck..
If you're feeling brave you can root it too.. and do a load of other stuff.. (took me a while to build up the courage to get into all that side of it.. but was worth it in the end, cos phone performance can be improved dramatically)!

Greets alamode, congrats on your new X10, and welcome to xda.
First off, it's great to hear that you have at least tried to find a place to start with your Android, and I know it can be rather daunting, as well as time consuming.
- If you're only interested in official Sony Ericsson (SE) Firmwares then you can just simply connect your phone to your computer after having installed PC companion on it
and follow the instructions. This should give you the latest official rendition of Android for the X10 which is 2.1 and includes dual touch.
- If however you wish Custom Firmwares which go well beyond anything that Sony could ever offer than I would recommend after having updated through PC Companion
(above) the next step is to 'Root' your X10 which allows you greater access and control over your device and the ability to 'Flash' (install) the many custom Themes, Apps, and ofcourse Firmwares(ROM)s

Thanks for the quick reply guys !..
Well yeah i heard that rooting/flashing your phone opens up a whole new world for you so im definately interested in that. i've heard Sony ericsson wont upgrade X10 to latest versions of android? Can we still update them after rooting/flashing our device?
Anyways ill update my device first from Sony ericsson then.. After that i'll have to root my device? Since i dont know much about rooting/flashing can someone just guide me as to what that is and what it does? Whats the difference between rooting and flashing?
And thanks guys you lot are helpful !

Um No...
Trying to update but keep getting this : unable to install or start phone software update components
Try doing a repair first then try the upgrade..
For rooting.. go to this thread - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=906248 download Superoneclick to your pc and run it from there..
Rooting will give you access to the system files so if you start rooting around in there deleting things then it can be dangerous - but you can always reflash/ repair using SEUS.
Rooting will also give you the opportunity to install custom ROMS which you'll find on the Dev sub-forum.
Would also recommend that you install JIT once rooted, as this gives a big performance boost. You'll find that on these x10 forums too.
Alright.. This is so frustrating. Been trying to root my phone all night but not really able to get anywhere.. Here's what i did..
First i finally upgraded to 2.1.. I used another PC and somehow it didnt give me the error i was getting earlier at the other PC. Not sure what was the problem there.
After upgrading to 2.1 i decided to root. First i used the SuperOneClick file to root my phone. After rooting, I installed BusyBox and then kept installing xRecovery but with no luck. xRecovery would just not install !!! I coped the apk file and ran the install from the phone, I got the icon but after getting the icon when it comes to the installing part it just freezes and after a while i get an error which gives me 2 options, Either to force close or to wait. I tried the other method too, the pushing method using X10ModTool and that didnt work either. After lots of tries and after getting extremely frustrated i uninstalled the apps and tried to start fresh.. I unrooted my phone using SuperOneClick and decided to root using z4root. I got the icon in the menu for z4root and i clicked on permanent root.. My phone restarts but i dont see the SuperUser icon anywhere.. If i try to install BusyBox it keeps on saying that its trying to get information..
So, So extremely frustrating !
Oh and i forgot to mention that after upgrading to 2.1, my Phone seems to have become slower while swishing between screens..
Which build number version do you have as the Superoneclick is for 2.1.A.0.435 and 2.0.2.A.0.24.
2.1.A.0.435
Im just not able to get root access ! Ive tried X10 Flash Tool, Ive tried SuperOneClick, Ive tried another software as well.. I just cant seem to get the root access..
I Installed Root checker and everytime after i root i check and it says that you do not have root access.. :S
help !

Install xRecovery and then you can even upgrade your phone to 2.2 there are some good ROMS available on this forum, you can check this -> http://forum.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.php?f=617
Thanks. Yeah i have xrecovery installed as well.
What is basically a ROM? From my understanding its a customized firmware? If so, Which ones the best at the moment? I cannot compromise on functionality (as in i dont want that i cannot use bluetooth/camera/wifi or some other feature because of the rom). So basically i just want a stable rom in which i dont have any limitations. Also what is the advantage of using another rom anyway?
Thanks !
Okay.. ran a few of those optimizations and stuff and the phone is running a bit better. Can you guys tell me what is a good Benchmark score for Stock 2.1 on x10? im getting 33.4 MFLOPS right now.. is that alright?
I still am experiencing a little stutter in the menus, so i installed LauncherPro and that seems to have taken care of it.. I dont understand why cant i get the stutter to go away in the original home screen?
Lastly, Another problem ive been having.. My mobile is connected via USB but instead of it charging up, It is very very slowly losing charge. It went from 95% to 89% in around 45-60 minutes. Whats that all about?

For me the best 2.1 ROM so far is bluesparks, it is very fast and stable. Everything works in this ROM.
As for a 2.2 ROM, i just love wolfbreak's CM6.1.3 v4.3. Everything works except for the camcorder. For getting the camcorder to work you can download video illusion from the market. The quality wont be as good though. However this ROM is just too good. Too fast and stable with good animations.

Is this the 2.2 Rom you were talking about:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=945264
Secondly, If i do install this ROM, Will all my applications and everything be deleted? Is there a way to just simply install the ROM and keep everything as it is?

Yeah, that is the 2.2 ROM I was talking about. Make sure you install the correct one depending on your baseband.
In order to keep everything, make a backup of your apps using titanium backup. You can then restore your apps after installing this ROM. Thats what I did.
Wolfbreak has given another way here:

Ah thanks, I might go for 2.1 cause of the camcoder.. Any chance of a fix for it coming in 2.2?

Hey folks,
I just bought the white international SGS II and i'm loving it!
I previously had an Infuse 4g, so I am pretty experienced with flashing/backing up/ restoring...but I have questions/concerns regarding the I9100.
I am about to try out the CM9 Unstable, so I backed my current stock ROM up using CWM Manager 3.0 (I am on CF-Root 5.0) onto my Internal SD, as I do not have an external SD card.
Now, I have had bad experiences with CM7 with Infuse and ended up not being able to restore due to many problems like MD5 mismatch, different CWM version, and problems while restoring ( I think it said something like devblock??)
So I'm pretty worried about not being able to restore back to the backup i just made.
So correct me if I'm wrong folks,
1) Go into CWM, flash CM9(once? twice?), Gapps, Faceunlock,
2) Data wipe/factory reset
3) Reboot
and should I choose to restore back to the stock Rom backup,
just go into CM9's recovery and restore..?
will this method give me problems restoring? will I have different versions of CWM recovery from the one I have currently? Is there any way to check if my back up was made properly?
Thanks a lot folks! Appreciate it!
Edit: "Make sure you're already running ICS bootloader (if not, go to SamMobiles and flash XXKP2 bootloader)". Is this necessary? Cus I have seen some folks say that they've not and was fine installing CM9.
First the procedure:
1. Wipe
2. Install CyanogenMod 9
3. Reboot
4. Install CyanogenMod again
5. Install gapps and face-unlock
Worked for me every time.
Your backups should work unless there were errors while creating them.
If you want some more safety, you can create a new backup after flashing the Siyah-kernel. The latest version uses the same version of ClockWorkMod as CyanogenMod 9.
Whether you need to flash the bootloader or not, depends on whether you already have it or not. I'm running galnet-MIUI and already had the bootloader installed. I don't know how to tell if you have it.

Ok...
I did further research and found out that Nandroid backup backs up everything EXCEPT the kernel.
I'm pretty sure that CM has its own kernel...but will it be CWM 5.0.2.7(the one i made backup in.)?
If it's not, the correct steps for me to restore my nandroid back up is to
1)boot into download mode from CM9,
2) put the cf-root kernel that i used in the ODIN PDA, flash,
3) turn off phone, reboot into CWM, then restore my nandroid back up right??
Can anyone please confirm this method??
I only have this phone and I cannot risk soft-bricking or hard-bricking this beautiful device.
Thanks in advance!
Also, i made a back up in blue recovery of CWM 5.0.2.7..does that matter?

thanks for the reply,
so I must have the ICS bootloaders in order for CM9 to work?
ooo siyah kernel method... that makes it easier! haha thanks so much!
I will proceed to do that!
btw, how is CM9 working for you?
do you think you'll be able to use it as a daily driver now that NITZ is gone??
1. Afaik cwm backs the kernel up and restores it too. (afaik = 99.9% sure, in this case)
2. CyanogenMod ships with its own kernel.
3. The kernel is not cwm. ClockWorkMod is just the recovery that is integrated into the kernel. CyanogenMod 9 has cwm-recovery 5.5 (Siyah too btw)
4. You don't need to use download-mode to restore.
Sent from my GT-I9100 using XDA App
You must have ICS-bootleggers. He did not say that for fun xD.
Is it suitable as daily driver for me?
Nope.avi
Why?
Accelerometer is unresponsive, so it takes forever to flip your screen.
Battery drainage is horrible.
Camera isn't working properly.
And the biggest no-go for me:
The device gets way to hot when using it.

alright,

Btw,
Flashing CM9 Zip does not flash the ICS bootloader right?
so then if I want to restore to my GB 2.3.5, would I need to flash GB bootloaders before restoring via Odin??
If the zip would flash the loaders, he wouldn't have mentioned it.
They're backwards-compatible.

If you need to make a post in the Q&A forums about flashing CM9, then you are definitely not the sort of person who should be flashing it. It is in very much a beta stage and there is a very high possibility it will **** your phone up even if you have done nothing wrong. If that happens you need to be the sort of person with enough experience to solve the problem by themselves. If you are asking questions before you've even flashed it then really, it's not for you. Use CM7, at the moment it's better than CM9 in every single way.

Most people should not flame some one as long as they show they have at least tried to look for an answer first. Yes we were all new at one time but we all learned.
Like you said you Googled and found your answer. Not that hard.
Think it's bad now. Should have seen it a few years ago. Lol clutter up the threads with questions that the answers were found with a search. You got warned. Do it twice and you went on vacation for a few days to learn how to search. So the next time you think people are being too hard. Remember it is not as hlbad as it was.
When I search for the answer, I ended up here.
are these considered ICS bootloaders? If not, when would you flash them, because they are completely unmentioned in any of the instructions or FAQs

3g is not Important in all country except syria, u need 3g when electricity turn off, and to use it in any palace not in closed place like WI-Fi
R: [Q] 3G doesn't work in jellyBean
Damn...i heard u guys in syria are having a really bad time, this stuff must be frustrating.
Well there may be a couple of options:
1)in syria there have been some problems and 3g is not getting really well to ur area anymore
2)your rom is unstable or just stupid(in this case i suggest flashing a good custom rom)
3)youflashing processes may have lead you to flash a rom meant for a nother regional residence(either the stock one u flashed through odin, or something else u flashed), in this case the "modem" of your phone(it's the kinda way your phone gets cellular data...kinda like an antenna kernel but i have no idea what it is just that it controls your antenna receiving/sending connections) might be wrong. Different modems exist according to where u live (or what operator u use i think as well). Try going on the web and looking for a modem that works in syria and try putting it back onto ur phone(i dont know how, look for it on google).

Good kernel: http://www.gokhanmoral.com/
If u flash i through odin get the tar version, if not and u flash it thru recovery get cwm package. Be sure to get the one for galaxy s3. About battery usage...im not sure...because i have a 2800 battery i got off ebay and it makes my phone last a whole lot longer, if u have battery problems in syria (like the power being shut down for a couple of hourse at times) u should get yourself a battery like this as well, it doesnt cost much.
Plus getting a custom rom is best, i wouldnt cound on kernel fixing your problems too much, give rootbox or jellybam a try. Or cyanogen if u wish but i dont thinks its very stable yet.
Also it is smart to get the latest version of your clockworkmod recovery, to do so download off the store the official app called "rom manager", u can use ut to update the recovery.

I dont have many more ideas to help you with your problem as you seem pretty self-conscient of how to flash stuff...i hope someone else can help you, but if i were u i would try flashing some roms and messing around a bit with the connectikn method for data inside rom preferences. U could also try looking in some syrian forums if this is a known problem with galaxy s3 in syria.....

syrian forums? hahaha if any syrian have this issue he won't solve it, and i see xda is the best fourm in the world
the problem is: the phone is not to me, and his owner doesn't like any rom except stock rom
R: [Q] 3G doesn't work in jellyBean
Aaahhhhh the phone isnt yours...damn that makes it even more difficult to fix the problem, even more so if you know it used to work before, but when u changed rom (or put th same one but with odin) it stopped working. That practically means u HAVE to change rom to make it work.....well try flashing stock rom for rooted devices from somewhere else but its gonna be difficult sorting this out if the owner wont cooperate.
I seriously doubt kernel will make some sort of magical changes...

i think if i flash a stock rom from 4 files, the problem will solved
Hey..
I have just rooted my Samsung Galaxy S2 to update to JellyBean 4.1.2. But apart from liberty i m very much depressed that i am not been able to play games on rooted phone. i want to ask that if i unroot my phone through Superuser app would it also wash my jellybean. or if there is some way that i could play HD games on the same phone without even thinking of unrooting?
Rooting doesn't affect anything. It could be a problem with phone or with the WAY you rooted.
What root method did you use?
Also i don't think you fully understand the meaning of rooting. Or maybe i didn't understand the statement "I have just rooted my Samsung Galaxy S2 to update to JellyBean 4.1.2" What do you mean, and how did you update to Jelly Bean?
I used odin for this Purpose and rooted using jellybean 4.1.2 official ROM available on internet..
That's what i meant. i hope you understand..
So u are proposing that i can use the *Unroot* option in superuser app and it wouldn't affect JB..??

Hmm, I think you are mixing the words flashing and rooting in a really confusing way, or are you saying that you flashed jb 4.1.2 with a custom kernel and then rooted? Whatever the case rooting doesn't effect games, I only know one game which does a root check (I forgot the name of the game but it was made by square enix) and that was later removed by the developer's themselves, just tell us what your actual problem is and what games are causing what kind of problems?

Yeah. i did flashed my phone when it was gingerbread 2.3.3. then i just used odin, followed the instructions to have JB version.
Specifically In case of NFS Most wanted, First logo screen(EA GAMES) appears. and with in 5 secs it just closes down and says "Unfortunately, NFS Most wanted has Stopped* i have also tried modern combat 4. but No Luck
OK...so...
1) you're not rooted
2) even if you were....rooting will not cause problems like this, nor will upgrading Android.
3) all you have done, is update Android to the latest version.
I've a feeling that there's more you haven't mentioned......
What have you done/installed/tweaked/modded since you upgraded? The smallest thing may be important.
Also....after the upgrade, but before installing anything, did you wipe cache/data reset? Not doing so *can* cause all sorts of issues....even if it didn't result in a boot loop (which is the usual symptom).....

No Sir. i think i didn't wiped cache aur data rest.. From where do i suppose to do that cause i am certainly new to this rooting sort of things. i dont know much. infact, i have just got help from my friend to do JB on my phone.
With respect...you say you are new to all of this....
I *could* give you a step by step guide to tell you how to do it....but in all honesty, it's better for you that you search, read and learn.....
XDA has a very useful search function.....
Use it to search for 'entering recovery' and 'wiping in recovery'.....
You need to learn and understand the steps instead of just doing them. That way you're less likely to bork your phone........

After updating to I9205XXUCML1_I9205OXXCML2_I9205XXUCML1_HOME I can't root anymore unless I install a custom rom, are there any pre-rooted stock roms?
If not which PDA from SamMobile is rootable?

bro, u know how sometimes u read an instructions article in a hurry and sometimes dont finish it thinking your common sense will seal the deal. thats what happened with me, better to be near sure about results then taking chances and regreting it. im positive I wouldve saved alot of time if I stopped for a while and read carefully. atleast I can say I learnt a few things here and there, still dont know whether I can root this rom. frankly cant be bothered to try anymore, developers on the mega section could make their rom introductions abit easier to the common user with simple background knowlege, especially regarding going back if not happy. I was planning to install linux with my root, but after all thats happened these past months i cant be bothered to even adjust settings according to my taste, e.g. my keyboard is still vibrating when i type. the notification bar on top is to far on this tabl...smart phone and settings gets lost in the stock cloud wallpaper. im just gonna roll with it, maybe samsung does know whats best for their phones, if they'd only let us move the app drawer to the centre of the dock dammit.

Yes, I know how it happens...
There is thread about rooting ROM with KNOX from ValenteL http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2574953
As I am afraid your counter of unofficial installation is tipped to 1 and you are already void your warranty, maybe try a shoot for it. Anyway if you want to stay with new ROM it will be sensible to made factory reset of your phone and installing on it newest ROM once more, but this time through Odin from your PC. Lets read about how to use Odin (there are several threads on forum) and download from Sammobile newest, not branded ROM. In this manner you can make fresh start. Then if you dare you can try to root it using method from link above.
Me I am very careful about upgrades and do not decided to flash in blind newest ROMs when they arrive... and all for better, because new ROMs comes with new bootloader (which prevent to downgrade to previous versions and when you try you can brick your phone) and with dreadful KNOX... Now i will wait at least for KitKat to upgrade.
Knox
I really hate it when Samsung went for Knox.. It made life harder for our devs
