Can anyone achieve full 1080p over MHL with their DNA?
I have tried two different MHL cable/adapters (A red Skiva aftermarket cable and the PNY MHL Smart Adapter w/monster cable HDMI cable) and I can only get 720p. I have tried this on two tv's (50" Pioneer Plasma and a 42" Visio LCD) that support 1080p.
I know what the hardware is theoretically capable of, however I wish to know if anyone has personally achieved full 1080p HD output.

As far as I can tell videos play in 1080p but everything else only shows in 720p. Pretty disapointing because that's one of the reasons I got this phone, I assumed everything would be 1080p but as it is there's no difference between the output of this phone and the one x on mhl .
I have a 46" Toshiba LCD and when I plug in the mhl adpter I got from monoprice.com. The tv shows a 1080p signal whether I am on the home screen or watching a video.

Just as nrage, my rocketfish MHL adapter from Best Buy is always displaying 1080p, no matter what screen is showing on my phone.

Yes my tv also says "1080p" up in the corner when I connect the phone through hdmi, however the quality of what I see on the screen is most definitely not 1080p. Looks more like 720p when I'm in any part of the OS or even the browser or most other app, and when I fire up the Netflix app it looks like 480p at best. Now when I play a HD youtube video or a personal video shot in 1080p you see it right away, BIG difference! Crystal clear picture as if I was watching a blue ray. So technically its on 1080p but for whatever reason it looks degraded except for youtube and videos. This is exactly the way the HTC One X acted, 1080p on youtube and vids and 720p or below everywhere else. The thing is that the One X has a 720p screen so I didn't expect to see 1080p in the OS or regular apps cause it's just mirroring whats on the phones screen, the DNA as you all know has a 1080p so it was a bummer to see the degraded quality in hdmi out. Who knows, maybe it's my cheap ebay adapters fault but I doubt it cause if that was the case then it probably wouldn't show youtubes in good quality either.

What resolution / color depth etc does the TV out give? Does it work properly with an AT&T Tilt 2 (I hear there are carrier restrictions).
Can it stream movies decently (SD card or online streaming, if bandwidth allows)? Where's a good place to get one?

I've been using the tv out feature a lot on my tilt2. Works great! can watch movies using core player, play snes using morphgear, I even bought a little 7" tv for my car, and will be testing some different nav programs. sorry i don't know specs, but i would imagine its 800x680 like the phone. I used to use my laptop to play movies on the tv, and surprisingly the tilt2 does a better job. definately a worthy 12 $ investment! also, dont buy from china unless you want to wait 2 months!
TV out isn't a resolution in the sense of a computer screen (pixels). It is NTSC composite video, with a 4:3 aspect ratio and 525 scan lines, some of which are used for VBI and thus not on the screen. Which is fine for images/video and such but unsuitable for web browsing or anything with lots of small details.
Given the above, if your video file is not too high res for the TP2 to play in general, it should have no trouble showing it via TV out.
As for online, I have streamed using 3G both Youtube and Slingbox, and used TV out to display it on my Pioneer AVH-4000 in my car with no problems (other than the flicker that is discussed elsewhere).
Don't know about AT&T limitations since I have Verizon. Got my cable via Amazon.

The flicker issue in regards to the phone+cable, or the Pioneer unit?

Mine gives me the option to choose which one when I plug in the TV out cable.
So, how does it look on a widescreen HD TV (21")? Does it stretch, or is that up to the TV?
I've been using it on a 42" TV to show photos and it looks fine, no lag etc and it goes portrait mode.

I just bought an HDMI output cable for my X2 and I am unimpressed with the results. The resolution looks grainy and all the videos look bad. Am I missing something?

Well, it starts with your TV not being the greatest resolution, and being a large size. What are you trying to watch? If you are streaming Netflix and things like that, they have been having issues with it streaming in HD. Are you running any ROMs? It also depends on the quality of the HDMI cable you are using. It does make a difference.
I have grainy issues when running some eclipse versions. When stock or on a certain eclipse version I get better video quality o er HDMI...also seems like if I lower the overscan quality seems better but that could just be in my head
I think the X2 HDMI Mirroring just upscales the phone's display without any sort of smoothing. So you get an effective resolution of 960x540 outputting at 1920x1080 with each pixel showing up 4x as big.
If any application actually supports video-out (maybe just the BLUR gallery), then it may output at a real higher resolution. But due to no standard on this sort of thing in Android, no application really supports video out and Motorola really did a crappy job with their mirroring service.
Does RealHDMI or Xternal Display do a better job of this?

those are both for the original droid X, and would disable the internal display and output over hdmi. X2's built in mirroring is better than that.
It is supposed to output at full 720p.
Actually it's supposed to be full 1080p output. Mine works pretty well.

This is one of my pet pevs as well. The picture quality on the phone is always better than the picture quality on the tv. It doesn't matter if I am hooked up to a 720 tv or a 1080. Same poor quality. Not hd like the phone

+1 it says its supposed to output to 1080 but with all the pixelation it looks like it just upscales to fit the tv.

Our native res of 960x540 is actually an hd standard and should look pretty decent when scaled to 1080 as it is exactly half.
Mine also looks lo-res. I'm mirroring to a 21.5" monitor (1080p) and the image looks pixelated. Not using the best cable, but it shouldn't look like it just stretches to fit the screen.

I mentioned it earlier but can't tell if its just my.mind playing tricks on me.
also I've noticed it seems to look better if I put the tv screen setting to normal instead of widescreen or fit to screen.

Our phones resolution is half in each side so it is a quarter, hence "qHD".
The video signal the phone is sending is 1080p, but the phone is just scaling the internal display.
This is compared to the ipad2 (and maybe iPhone 4s) quick just mirrors the screen resolution without scaling in a 1080p signal giving big black borders. But apps can output true HD over the same connection, if they're programmed to.
anyone find out if there is a way to adjust the scaling form this device? did anyone make a rom that can do anything fo this problem?

but how does it do the audio? i know that hdmi can handle video and audio so will a single hdmi cable output the video and the sound from the transformer when i plug it into the tv? i think when i used my laptop i had to get a cable with a 3.5mm jack to go into the headphone jack on the laptop and on the other end were rca jacks to go into the tv but my plasma doesn't have rca jacks. i think that's where i'm getting confused.
Yes that cable will output both audio and video to your tv simultaneously.

I have Xperia Neo with HDMI and the audio and video @ 720p couldn't be handled any better IMO
All I can say is more than likely 1080 will be released maybe as official update or as mentioned above devs will do it
HDMI support is an essential for any tablet in the current market

1080p Video File Size
1080p hdmi out would be great. So we are talking 1280 x 1920 output, yes? I am getting old and I have a hard time seeing the difference between 720p and 1080p.
If I am worried about 1080p out, then I'd also be concerned with having 7.1 audio out also. Might as well experience the "full" movie experience.
What about file size this 1080p video is going to be? Even with the 64 GB Prime what's the biggest file size I can dump on the drive? Are sd cards used with Android not limited to 4GB (aka fat32 format)? Any word on ICS breaking this barrier?
I cannot see a 1080p movie being within the 4GB limit. It's a challenge to get a 720p movie within the current 4GB limit.

You should not worry about this part. Yes it will.
The HDMI out video playback power is a task of the CPU/SoC, regardless of the actual display on the device. The Nvidia Tegra 3 SoC is well capable of playing smooth 1080p video.

This is the most concerning part with using the TF as your portable media watcher/tv-hookup-thingie.
From what i've read and seen today i think the Transformer Prime's hdmi output still sends out 720p, so no 1080p.
This is a real bugger since i want to use this thing as desktop replacement (hooked up to 23" 1080p+ monitor). 720p is way to low (big letters, small working area , blurry fonts when zoomed out)
Tegra3 as said can handle more than 720p.
Question is is there any hardware limitation?
Like the HDMI out, could that limit to 720p?

tegra3 can output resolutions way higher than 1080p... however, the TF2 device clones its own screen when connected to hdmi, which means you'll stay at 1280x800 or 1280x720 actually (minus lower bar)
But that could rather be software and by this changable if it really is the case.

it's like this. One's hdmi is connected its clones what show on Primes screen and that would be 720p when you are on homescreen,browsing, apps, games.
But when you start a movie and are connected to a screen with hdmi it will output the resolution that the video file have, if the movie is 1080p it will be 1080p if your screen will handle that resolution. The picture is only showed on the connected screen and on Primes screen you only have to media controls like play/paus seek and so on.

It's supposed to work that way on normal Transformer too (since some update) but I never had time to test. Someone claimed that it works though - 1080p movies play by HDMI as 1080p not 720p.
I would like full 1080p desktop but I doubt it will be there. Not in HC for sure. Maybe ICS will add sth like that?
Per Anandtech, Prime supports ext NTFS volumes, and 4GB+ is allowed. This assumes you also buy the dock, since Prime has no USB.

Would like a 1080p desktop too! I can imagine that this could be a problem due to not being able to use the touchscreen in that case (can't touch a black screen) but at least i would like to have the choice when i connect the device to hdmi (popup?)

The day when tablets gets 1080p screens and a OS that is setup for that you will get 1080p on the external screen even when you just use the homescreen,browser,App.
movies played on transformer when hdmi is connected will be shown on external screen in their native (correct word?) resolution.
480p will be 480
720p video will be 720p
1080p video will be 1080p
Homescreen and all other places in the UI will be clone to the big screen in 720p because primes screen is 1280*800

would been a good option that you could choose to clone the screen in 1080p and when you plug in the hdmi primes screen turns off and prime start acting same way like a computer that out put the picture to a screen and u use a mouse/keyboard to navigate

Hi, I've been trying to stream from ice stream app to my evo/tv via mhl adapter the video quality on the phone is great but on my 40" HDTV its really pixelated.
I've tried different Alps like mx and mono player but all seem to compress the video. Is there any way to not loose the stream quality from phone to TVs

Chances are its the source and not the connection or player. The evo's screen resolution is less than hd, so it would look better on the evo than big tv if the resolution is smaller. Try a local file to compare and make sure it's not really a connection issues.

Have had the best luck with serviio (free) and videos etc streaming from PC on 51" panasonic (not the best TV) are as good as anything else out there IMO. Just easier to transfer to PC and run from there...quality is MUCH better

I think its the 3d or maybe the mhl adapter/cable coz when i try to mirror a HD video (1080p) on my tv it lags and looks pixelated too....it lags on evo 3d as well.
Same video looks great when played through a pendrive on TV.
I think when using MHL the refresh rate is 24hz hence less fps.
But dont know what is the video quality issue here.
I play netflix, 1080p & 720p locally stored files, YouTube and various other sources. Locally stored content plays perfect. Netflix is watchable but not same as hd from computer to tv. This is bc some sources stream lower res/lower bit rate to ur phone bc its a phone. Not an hdmi mhl issue

maybe it outputs 1080p (progressive) at 30 hz only
But my tv supports 30hz, how would i make it choose 1080p and not 1080i?
and the hz are selected automatically depending on the source.
I tried my dell 24" 1080P monitor, it displayed too at 1080I, not 1080P.

Afaik it's not capable of such a high-bandwith format, and "only" supports up to 1080i.

Well i think it has to do with how the phone communicates with the tv.
I am only able to get 720p output. I have a 2007 westinghouse 47inch 1080p capable tv. For comparison i have a samsung droid charge that has direct hdmi2hdmi ability, and on same tv i get 1080i output, i am using oem samsung hdmi mhl adapter.

I have the official MHL cable and it outputs at 1080p at 30hz, however i don't want this display type, ok yea great if i want to watch movies, but i want to play tekken with 2 pads, all i need is the mhl to do it's thing.
60fps would be amazing, however i don't believe that it's possible.
Being bottle necked at 30hz on 1080 i / p or even 720 p is just not acceptable, infact it's a kick in the teeth for the £27 i paid for the thing.
Movie's are great, games not so good, although the jelly bean update i just got did help somehow.
By the way i'm using a 47 inch 1080p capable 3D TV

b) your eye is only capable of distinguishing ~24 images per second.

Other phones, ie: the iphone is capable of running games at their full potential speed using their AV link cable, which is just wonderful when i hear it from my friends who have iphones / ipads.
Movies is one thing, but to have the ability to have two pads linked to my phone via bluetooth, the ability to play an age old game on a psx emulator on my phone, I then go out and buy an MHL cable thinking that I can play it at the speed the phone is delivering and then it falls on it's arse and runs at a pitiful frame rate due to it running at 30hz and not mirroring fully, that in my opinion and many others is a kick in the teeth, it should have been thoroughly tested by samsung and not just thrown out there, and for it not to be properly looked at, the £27 price tag i paid for it, is overpriced and not worth the money.
Also about your thoughts on the human eye only having the ability to see 24 frames per second, that has nothing to do with it.
The human eye for all it's faults is still capable of seeing a difference between 24 - 30 or even 60+ fps so having a framedrop is not just noticable it's annoying.
Also the galaxy s 3 is not just a phone, it is a smart phone it is also worth £500 and capable of much more than just making and receiving phone calls, so no not just a phone, it's a device capable of much more.
When a device like the S3 has a peripheral like the MHL cable, promising mirroring of the device onto a HD TV, you tend to believe it, well i paid for it and i wished i hadn't because although it does what it says on the tin to an extent, however it does it with latency issues and input delay, rendering gaming obsolete, which is the main reason i bought this thing.

Believe it or not the adapters that we buy from ebay or other outlets are not original although they seem to be. They have a galaxy s3 sticker on the box and Samsung usually does not produce a premium product with a sticker on the box to show it is for galaxy s3.
Anyway, even if they are original they are not able to output 1080p. TV reports 1080i but if you watch full hd (1920*1080) videos with them and you focus on the screen you can easily see that the video is played at 720p not even close to 1080p or i.
Samsung has announced that you can watch full hd videos and 1080p output. but these adapters are not able to provide such performance.
Apparently, the original packaging from samsung should look like this:
search for : "Samsung galaxy s3 OFFICIAL MHL cable HDMI unboxing" in youtube.
Please let me know your idea.

Interesting. Mine looks like the one in the video below and has a sticker on the box. I have only used it once and was happy with the result. Could it not be that Samsung hadn't produced the boxes for the earlier released product as my actual lead looks the same.

I have a hologram on mine, bought from a samsung retailer.
But either way i've seen different results yielded from the cable. On my Viera it's 1080i @ 60hz and on my LG it's 1080p @ 30hz, on some HDMI cables it doesn't work at all.
So yea it's a weird one.
Good for movies, utter useless for gaming. Unless it's a slow game, slight input lag.
