The new Android 4+ Soft Keys take up too much screen real estate thus cancelling out the effect of going for a larger display phone.
Unlike the pre 4 Droid which handles the Soft Keys, Clock, Battery, Signal etc all on the single bar thus making use of that big screen.
So im looking at upgrading from a 4.3" HD2 Gingerbread with merged Status Bar + Soft Keys, to a larger 4.55" Xperia T unmerged.
Am I the only one bothered by this?
Is it possible to merge Status Bar + Soft Keys on Android 4+?
If you root it, you can flash a rom with tablet ui enabled, or a Paranoid rom which lets you tweak the dpi of each app individually (search for Paranoid Android on YouTube or something). This, of course, only works if these roms exist for this device

So if you are like me you're tired of looking at the gaudy version of a nav bar and soft keys that amazon has come up with. So I started looking around for a way to modify the soft keys to look more like stock android. I may at some point dive into the framework and rewrite portions to do this, but in my search I came across an old method for removing the nav bar altogether. It is a very simple build.prop edit and at the same time adds some screen real-estate. I've confirmed this does work on this device, check out the screenshots below.
How to(rooted device):
1- You will first need a soft key/nav buttons app(once this is done the stock keys will be gone, and kinda hard to navigate without some). I like using Button Savior, it allows you to place the soft keys anywhere around the perimeter of the screen, and has multiple themes you can use. Also if you have the paid version you can change the number and position of buttons
2- Using a file manager navigate to /system/build.prop file
3- Open build.prop with a text editor, scroll to the end and on a new line enter:
Code:
qemu.hw.mainkeys=1
4- Save and reboot.
Now there are ways to do this with launchers but it will not be permanently removed and will still show up in apps.
To get stock keys back just delete the line you entered in the build.prop and reboot
Remove soft keys

Hello
Just wanted to say thanks for the above info. It all works great and the extra room on the screen is appreciated. By the way, I am using CM 10 rom on my RAZR M, and it works great there as well. Doesn't work perfectly on the stock RAZR M, although both soft keys and header info (3G/4G-signal strength, etc).are removed as well, but there is a System.UI closing warning. However, it does work on the stock if the added directions are removed from build.prop in text editor, but NO reboot. Otherwise the stock keys return.
Works on 7" KFHD, too. Just set up, very cool. Big thanks

Works fine on my recently re-rooted 7.2.2 - went ahead & sprung for the pro so I could remap the phone key to something useful ("calling home", going to the original home so I can read books. I sometimes forget that's what I originally bought it for).
Thanks.
Sadly, i must say that i detected an issue. Some apps that are coming with an own menu-button lost this button, e.g. Aldiko (app to read books) or google chrome. In chrome, the menu can be accessed with the menu-button that comes with button saviour, but the menu of Aldiko can't be accessed at all.

This will work for me until cm 10 comes out. Confirmed working on Kindle Fire HD 7". This also fixes the issue of the keyboard in landscape mode.
Wow, this is the greatest thing I have done to my kindle yet, make sure to install button savior first or else you are gonna be having a hard time fixing it. Couldnt access my root to change the build prop back to install button savior, luckily i was able to download the apk file on my computer and transfer it over and install it. Set it to appear when i swipe from the right corner...and goes away after 5 seconds..different themes... and alot of options when it comes to using custom triggers. Found a pro version on google, works flawless.
Thanks for the tip, but can I suggest the better looking ltm launcher.

Nice tip, I used button saviour previously on my HTC Desire and found it to be a great piece of kit, but I've noticed that while using it on my Kindle, particularly in portrait mode, when the button saviour bar is closed there is a flicker lower down the screen which is very annoying. Its as though it repositions itself at the bottom of the screen before closing. I'm using the pro version as well, so it's not got anything to do with that.
For now I've gone back to the default nav bar - it is annoying that there is no autohide for that really as otherwise it does the job. There must be a way to autohide it as some apps do that.
I also had the no menu button problem. I had to go back to stock nav bar till that is figured out..oh well

Yeah i know but with out stock nav bar the menu button doesn't do anything. For instance if i set it up with a menu button on button savior but no nav bar when an app should have a menu button it wouldn't be there any more. The button savior menu button also does nothing when u click it. If the stock nav bar is their however then the button savior menu button works again and it appears in the app again

I had noticed this, but not the part about the menu working with the bar there. perhaps we could mod the framework-res.apk to set the height to 0 or something then we would not need to do the qemu.hw.mainkeys=1..

What file explorer are you using? Some of the text editors dont work on this device. I believe I ended up using root browser.
You're a life saver, man! Couldn't stand the huge bar Amazon thought looked good

Hi,
it seems the new update (4.2.2) is finally coming to my Xperia tablet Z - wifi (SG312).
I'm a bit hesitant to get it.
So can you, users of 4.2.2, summarize the differences and pros/cons versus the 4.1.2 version?
Big thanks in advance.
Laurent.

Thanks. These are the official and "immediately visible" changes.
I'm interested into the other stuff such as performances, battery usage, bug fixes, new bugs, annoying things (it looks like the centered home button is one when using the keyboard)...
I would advise against installing it, unless you have at least 15cm long fingers!
I'll be reverting back to 4.1, because:
* the new soft buttons in the middle of the screen are hard to use in landscape
* notification bar on top wastes room
* notification bar on top is hard to use
* I see no improvements... only the slightly nicer design of the lock screen
They used a design intended for a phone, not a tablet!

This update is a massive improvement in my opinion, particualry the speed. There is no longer and stuttering on the homescreen. When I left a CPU intensive app and went to the recent apps tray on 4.1, there was a 3/4 second lag that has no vanished.
The on screen keyboard now has a 'thumb' option with a reduced size allowing you to float the keyboard around the screen. Very handy indeed.
I've also seen a big improvement with the speaker quality and after moderate use for several hours since the update, battery life seems improved but difficult to tell at this stage.
Video unlimited now sports a dark look over the previous white.
I have some questions regarding wi-fi performance since my was always a bit on the down side.
Notification bar on top is somewhat bad news for me, since I read a lot (moonreader mostly) and I like every space to be availlabe.
Anyway, could you guys enlighten me a bit?
Open moonreade and open a book on it and tell me if the notification bar is dimmed out or if moon reader cover it up?
And what about wifi?
Please answer me this questions because I love to update stuff and 4.2.2 is availlabe now for me and I am ichting to update but wont do it if it is not an improvement as many are reporting...
Thanks in advance!
I need to ask. For all those who opt not to upgrade because of the new layout of the notifications and soft buttons, will you be staying behind when we get 4.3 and onwards? Sony is obviously not bringing back the tablet UI.

I actually intend to update anyway, just want to know if it will bother me a lot or just a little...
And BTW, how can you be so certain that sony won't bring tablet UI back?
And please, open moonreader and tell me what happens to top notification bar?
I confirmed the 4.2.2 upgrade on my SGP312/Japan version fixed the WiFi drops problem, tested on the same router and S4 WiFi hotspot. Tested for over 24 hours now and ran perfect. For the Centered soft keys problem, I installed a small app "Home Anywhere" to place the keys at left screen when portrait. Worth to try, buddies.

I'm not going to bother with this update. The only thing that's important to me is compatability with a 64GB card, and I've been using one successfully ever since I got it. I really don't want to go to a phone UI on a tablet.
I don't think I'll have an issue with the new UI, but does anyone have any screencaptures of it?
They seem to have fixed the Bluetooth/WiFi issue that Sony was so mute about.....

Thanks m8, I can see the home screen icons in the middle there, I don't mind that, are those shortcuts on the top left?
I thought I read someplace here that the drop down menu thingy was on the top left, seems to be the MIDDLE? are screenshots taken with volume buttons now, or is "clip manager" still available?

No worries. They are shortcuts on the top left in a very similar place as 4.1.
Drop down menu is in the middle. Also screen shots can still be taken from the power menu.

The only reason I want to upgrade from an S3 right now, to either the S4 or the G2, is due to the larger screen size. The N3 is a little big so it seems these two are the only logical options.
I upgraded from the Galaxy nexus to the S3 purely due to the fact that it did not WASTE screen real-estate on black and white static icons. Frankly that is the absolute stupidest use of the screen there is. Samsung has it right by continuing to keep the buttons off screen.
So, the only way the G2 fits the bill (for probably many people) is if one of the following two solutions can exist:
1. The nav bar is totally transparent. The buttons still register when you tap there, but when browsing or watching video, the frame or text completely spills behind the buttons as if they don't actually take up space. Still not ideal.
2. The buttons are taken off screen fully and remapped to the rear HW keys. One volume key can be the back button, and the other can be the home button, etc. To change the volume, you gotta drag the software slider. Not a problem. I believe there are many button remapping apps in the market. Anyone tried this?
Is there an app to do these things? Can this feature be built into a ROM? For solution number 1, the nav bar can be hidden using a feature like PA has, and an app can just have a virtual transparent button floating where the original ones were. This app might also just exist in the android market.
Can we work on getting the entire screen area useful on this large phone?

I had the same mentality as you before deciding on the G2. There is a solution.
You will have to ROOT first.
GMD Auto hide app. This app will completely hide the software keys. They only appear when you swipe up from the very bottom of the screen.. or just tap the very bottom of the screen. You chose that in settings. The software keys can be made transparent as well.
Im currently using the app and love it. Works perfectly.
Without root... i dont think there is a solution.
I just use the navbar mod that shrinks the navbar down to either half or a third of the size. That way they take up hardly any screen at all.

I've used the Xposed Module - Ultimate Dynamic Navbar (available on play store). Looked to have more customization options than GMD (can have up to 7 buttons on the nav bar, for example, and more options for configuring long press of the buttons). But anyway, overall concept is the same as GMD.
And so far, i am loving it. Nice to have the full screen real estate at all times.
And root is so damn easy on this phone.

I considered Xposed as well... but i thought that method just let you adjust/resize and theme the soft buttons.. but i wanted to completley hide them and have them reappear with a touch/swipe of my finger and then go away again. Xposed can do that as well? I just took a quick glance at the thread and figured it couldnt.

The xposed module Ultimate Dynamic Navbar can do all that.
it's on play store, but i just found it here on XDA. Note to self - remember to ALWAYS check xda first before you pay! although, i like the app so far, so it's worth the money.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2270198
EDIT : One note - on the G2, I've found you have to use another Xposed module (like g2 xposed or gravity box) to hide the stock nav bar first. At least right now.
I'm already using G2 xposed to remove the volume slider in drop-down, and for transparent status bar, so I already had it to make this change.
I love the software buttons because you can customize them and have various animations and actions. I agree with the wasted space but I root and download "tex_Droider" from the Play Store and change the DPI down from 480 to 400. This will make everything smaller and more roomier... including the Nav Bar.
Then I downloaded Flashify and TWRP Custom recovery. Flashed with Flashify.
I downloaded a Smaller Nav Mod. I used the "Medium" size since I already lowered the DPI. You can use the small size too if you want it really small. Boom.
I've played with hiding the navbar and using gestures and also that PA mod. I dunno just doesn't work for me. I use those buttons a lot and adding a swipe each time is a pain. Personally I wouldn't mind just having a transparent bar across ALL apps.
With ya player911, wound just using small nav bar. Wish I could add a couple more apps to the stock home swipe out.
With the G nexus I've tried making the nav bar about half. It worked except for the occasional mis-tap. Still it was annoying to have it cover up screen - on top of all of these options, can the nav bar be made transparent? I figure apps would have a hard time realizing what's going on so a solution would go something along the lines of first removing the nav bar to make every app draw full screen, and then adding a module that would create false transparent buttons simply overlaying the screen content at all times, rather than having a swipe or some other gesture pull the nav bar up or down. The false buttons could be in the very corners of the screen so as to not likely cover anything up.
The thing I like about the S3/4 is in dark conditions where you are being more tactile with the phone/case (I turn my softkey backlight off totally) your thumb rests on the edge of the case and rolls over to tap the softkey. It wouldn't be an issue to get used to the position of this virtual softkey by adopting the same behavior, it's just a matter of whether an app exists that will draw repositionable virtual transparent mappable "area" on the screen that would correspond to a button.
Don't think you're going to find one. Every app/game is different, so who is to say that where you place your "always there" transparent buttons won't interfere with an actual area you need to tap inside an app, game, etc. Even in the corners.
I would again suggest trying the auto-hide mods mentioned above. They do exactly what you are describing with the overlay, except you have to swipe or tap to bring it up.
Swiping is really not that big a deal. Ultimate dynamic navbar gives you the ability to swipe right to a button, so your finger never has to come off the screen. It's very fluid.
You could also try PIE. But what I like about the auto hide nav bar mods is that you can set the nav bar to toggle, so it stays up if you need to press nav bar buttons a bunch of times in a row. With PIE (at least when I last used it), you have to swipe for every button press.

This is a shame. I figured this would be one of the first mods due to the popularity and convenience of on-screen buttons. The bezel on the Note 4 is so small at the bottom that it wouldn't even look like a waste of space to have a navigation bar. The capacitive buttons are so easily pressed due to the small bezel. I don't mind this, but I wish the option for on-screen was included by samsung. I also hate the "back" button on the right side because I'm left-handed and can't reach it with my dominant hand. That should be reversible as well. Is that possible?
I also recommend lmt. The back button is instant.

To disable the Recent and Back hardware keys (capacitive buttons), edit /system/usr/keylayout/Generic.kl and put a # in front of these 2 lines:
key 158 BACK
key 254 APP_SWITCH
Save and reboot!

Ah, thanks! What would I change to simply disable the Recent and Back keys completely? I have on screen keys now. I still want to keep the home button because I don't accidentally press it.

Had same issue. Use dynamic navbar on playstore or lmt pie. I went for dynamic navbar it's amazing and can be customised to your absolute liking.

The only thing about let and pie control in general is that it auto dissappear. When multiple back key is required, it is a pain.
Which is why I have resorted to using side key panel when I don't want to use capacitive. I edited settings database to add transparency to side panel menu as well as having a hint bar dissappear. I moved it to the comfortable zone for my thumb, and trigger it without fail. It says on till I press outside of the side menu.
It is working great for me. Although I would rather have standard nav bar for purely visual reasons as well as more modding options.
Sent from my SM-N910W8
I too am a lover of a static nav bar on my Galaxy Devices.
I now have a SM-N910P now and am frustrated as heck at not being able to get it functional here, on a rooted stock NK2. I used to run SlimKat 4.4.2 on my SPH-L710 and loved the navbar that they baked into the ROM. SlimLoli is maturing for the Note 4, but it doesn't yet have any S-Pen support baked in. This fact, when coupled with how well Samsung and Sprint have done with TouchWiz on the Note 4 have caused me to hold off on putting a custom ROM on the device.
So, what to do.?. Editing buildprop does indeed cause the looping system UI FC. UDN is an excellent solution barring one issue, and that it is doesn't have a means to dedicate a portion of the display to the nav bar. It just overlays on top of the launcher's/app's UIs. I'd be willing to pay for a solution that fixes this.
Pie controls have never really clicked with me. Not yet being willing to move away from NK2, I find that I am wondering if there is a way to force a portion of the bottom of the screen to be entirely dedicated to a specific app, all of the time. As depicted in this screeny, UDN overlays and it is frustrating as hell.
Anyone have any ideas yet?
