Ok, so here's what I would like to find/figure out:
My lady has an SGS 3 stock and I have an SGS 2 (running sho's 1.3.5). I'd like to have her using her stock messaging app and have both her and I be able to send and receive all the same smilies. Ideally I'd like to just drop the mms.apk from the stock sgs3 on my phone and call it good.
Has anyone tried this? Thoughts?
Please don't say, 'GoSMS is the $hit just use that.' a>I'm over 3rd party messaging apps and b>I just want to keep her device stock. c> that's not what i'm trying to accomplish here
I'm looking at just editing my smiley images, but wondering if there's a better way yet.
Thanks.
Dropping the MMS.apk straight in wouldn't work, since they're different devices. Your best bet is either GoSMS which you don't wanna use, or edit the smilies yourself.

Yeah, pretty much knew that but wasn't sure if there was a modded one floating around that would work. I'm going to try and grab hers, pull out the icons and mod mine using the APK Multitool. weeeeee :good:
Just get the SGS3 SecMms.apk, use root explorer and Extract All, Then get the SGS2 SecMms.apk from ShoStocks rom, extract all (you will need to rename the first extracted Sec.Mms to something like SGS3-SecMms other wise when you extract the second one from ShoStock3 it will overwrite the first extracted one). Now go into the folder of the apk's and find the emo_im_blahblahblah's and copy all from the SGS3 and place them in the SGS2 most likely same exact folder. Now use root explorer and zip the folder. Then go to zipped folder location, long press and rename it from Sec.Mms.zip to Sec.Mms.apk Next use root explorer and copy the NEW one you made and go to the /preload folder. Paste it there. Then long press on the .apk again and SET PERMISSIONS and make sure it is set to rw,r, r. Now long press again and select MOVE and go to preload/symlink/system/app and PASTE. HIT OK. Now reboot phone. Done. This should now have the same emoticons.
ALSO MAKE SURE THE EMOTICON FILE NAMES ARE THE SAME.
(YOU WILL ALSO NEED TO SET THE PRELOAD FOLDER TO "MOUNT R/W" to be able to paste it there and move it).

I forgot to mention that. I tjink all the samsung stock firmwares use/used the same emoticons inside the mms.apk. Are you sure she isnt using some app or something else from the market? Maybe they have their own emoticons?

So for fun, I've added my own preferable versions of the existing png's, rezipped and moved to my phone. All is good.
Now for our next exercise...Would you happen to know how to add emoticons to an existing messaging app? For example, the sender has an emoticon that uses the text: <3 My messaging app doesn't know what to do with that, so I get the characters instead. The sender sees a heart. Does that make sense?
I'm sure I'd have to add/link some xml to a new png in the same drawable folder. Just not sure where that piece of code is/goes. Maybe you can just point me to a good faq or how-to so I don't have to take up your time.
Thanks man.
I'm almost 100% sure the messaging apps pickup basic things like a heart, but it might look different on each device. As for adding them, give me a little bit and ill look around.

Seems the stock...well at least the mms.apk in Sho's rom doesn't (see attachment).
here's the problem with that one specific emote...
now how to fix it :-\

Try Decompiling the MMS.apk and find the code for that emoticon and try editing.

Got it. Edited the corresponding line (21) in res\values\arrays.xml
Old value:
<3

New value with the correct syntax:
<3

Glad to see you got it fixed.

So anyway I can get asop mms apk to work with working mms? Cause I tried to with my LG thrill and failed with it. Nothing ever worked. I'd prefer the stock android messagsing app. But iI don't want to flash a Rom. I know I have to root. But I don't want to flash a rom just for that.
Also Is tthere anyway to change in the framework like where its like froyo everything is vannila like a theme I know it wouldn't be something simple but would be nice

You have to be rooted. The mms.apk is a system app so, to get the apk to install requires you to override.
Yes I know that!!!!! I have known this since I got my first android begenning of last year....... I was asking where to obtain one that will work completely with mms working as well

I accomplished this a while ago but I can't remember how I did it! I attached the apk I used, but I don't know if I installed normally or if I deleted the old mms.apk and used this one? Here's the code for getting rid of the old apk and replacing it with this one, which is what I THINK I did.
Code:
adb remount
adb shell
su
cd /system/app/
cp mms.apk mms.apk.backup
exit
exit
adb push mms.apk /system/app/
Let me know if this works
EDIT: If you want the stock android messaging, with no themes or anything, look here for the apk:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1220698
The attached file is themed black, which I think is cool, but the stock is there if you need it.

I've created an mClock folder on my phone, dragged the files with images into it and when I click on one of the .xml files, it shows the time/date but no image/template behind it. Ive also tried adding these files to my SD card with no luck.
Not sure why the background is not showing up, anybody have any idea?
Edit: Okay I found a solution for anybody who ends up here somehow. The mClock skin needs its own folder inside of the "mClock" folder you've created on your phones storage. So on your phones storage (didnt work on my SD for some reason), create a folder called "mClock" and within that folder create another one with the name of the zip. So I downloaded a skin called "ribbons", so the folder inside your mClock folder should be called "ribbons". Then drag everything into that ribbons folder and you should be good to go!
Sorry if confusing lol
Have you looked in the Android themes section where the mclock thread is yet? There are a lot of the same question there about mclock not showing up properly. from what I would speculate is that the background image isn't in the right folder where the xml file is supposed to find it. That usually is my problem as well.

Editing: Found solution, in OP.
sadly the solution doesn't work for me :'( ...
in my case i've tried internal and external no difference. my layout is mnt/sdcard/mclock/sayit/hdpi/xmls/ and when i select my xml it will appear in preview but not when i press back. i can grab it but it is invisible and shows nothing.
Sent from my Galaxy S II Skyrocket
You also need to make sure the "mClock" folder you create on your sd is exact....(lowercase "m", capitol "C") If not the whole path will be ruined. Inside the .xml you can look at the path, just make sure you name your folder correctly!
Ye when I posted it was just mclock but tried mClock no difference...
ok on a stock rom it won't even appear in preview anymore. it will however appear on homescreen but without xml modification its just the regular font.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I727R using XDA App
are you're themes in .zip format, are you unzipping and moving the folder inside your "mClock" folder on your sd? If so, you need to open up the .xml in notepad and make sure what the path is, should be (sd/mClock/nameofyourfolder) make sure everything is spelled correctly and that everything is on the same path as the .xml, otherwise it wont work.
It was downloaded as a zip yes. But as I stated in my first post it is sdcard/mClock/Sayit/hdpi/xmls/ and it is in there

It shouldn't be all that.....it should be, sdcard/mClock/"themefolder") Inside the folder of whatever theme you're using should be the .png,.ttf font file, and the .xml. all in the theme folder of you're choice.
k now it is sdcard/mClock/Sayit

Nothing shows up at all for me.

what did you do to fix the other one?
I would rather not install another app to change icons. How involved is it to actually pull the apk from the ROM, replace the stock icon and push it back through.
I messed with this some on my Vibrant decompiling apk's and doing basic icon and xml changes but that was so long ago I don't even know if the process is relevant. I also only played with non stock apks like launchers, never anything that is already compiled to the ROM initially.
I'm wanting to push in custom icons for Facebook, Twitter, camera, market ect....
Thank you

Me too this is why I wanted to dbl check. Also, some of these apps split to another folder right? Would I need to pull both?
Sent from my PG86100 using xda premium
Its not all that difficult, just have to decompile the app, swap icons in res/drawable/ folder I believe(might have to look elsewhere), recompile. Then as long as it's NOT a system app, sign it. Then push back to phone. There are a couple of tools to use. I like using just apktool, but apk Multi-Tool is good as well. Try them out, see which you like more.
Apk Multi-Tool
apktool
Do note though, doing it this way, whenever the app has an update(facebook, twitter, etc.) you will have to re-do this. Let me know if you have any other questions, i'll try to help.
and p.s. shortercut is a good lightweight app to add custom icons.

you can (most of the time) swap the icon with 7zip, no need to decompile and recompile. Some apps put the icon in /res/drawable, some in /res/drawable-hdpi. If you need more help after trying this out go to the theme help link in my sig.
Here is a modified stock AT&T Contacts.apk file without the permanent Yellow Pages contact at the top. The is for rooted users only.
Replace the Contacts.apk in /system/app using Root Explorer. Change it's permissions to RW-R--R--. Reboot!
WARNING: Do not use this for any custom ROMs, only for use on a stock AT&T ROM! Also, remember to make backups...
Funny, I never even noticed the YP thingy on the top of my contacts till now. How lame. When I clicked on it, I got a force close. I must have already frozen whatever that button links to...

How obnoxious of them to stick that YP in the contacts ?
Thanks, I tried posting in dev but it said not enough posts . I remove the yp app and mine force closed also when clicking the contact. It's crazy how much bloat ware came on this thing. I'd like to see a stock Samsung contacts.apk to see what else they hacked up

I have it, PM me you email addy I'll mail it over to you. I would upload it but I'm at work right now.
I haven't tested this on any of the custom ROMs, only the stock AT&T ROM. I'm not sure what they did with their Contacts.apk file. If you upload the one from your ROM, I can see if I can make the same mods that I did to the AT&T one.
Didn't work for me either, and also copied it over stock apk and don't have a backup. Using TPC V2 ROM. Any one have stock Contacts.apk for that rom?

Awesome, worked perfectly. Thanks.
Here are some apks that change the icons on your home screen and your app drawer.
Thanks to Pfaffinator for the icons.
1 go to system/ app and copy your entire app file then place it on an sd card for backup if you want to revert back to your original icons.
2 copy these new apks to system/ app. Your phone will ask if you want to replace your old apk with the new one...tap yes then profit.
3 I do not know how to make a zip file yet as I am still learning.
4 I will add more as I theme more icons.

If you flash super Jelly, use the super Jelly updater to download a blank zip. You then use an archive manager like 7zip or winrar to place the apk's in the system/app folder. I think it has to be signed for JB, not sure how to do that tho.
Thanks for sharing tho. If these are someone else's work can you give them credit? If this is your work, nice job!
