[RECOVERY] [THEME]TWRP & Dual Recovery - Sony Ericsson Xperia Mini, Mini Pro, Xperia Pro, A

As some of you might know ive been working lately on porting TWRP to our device, and now, after many hours work, I can finally release it to the public.
GENERAL
Team Win Recovery Project 2.3, or twrp2 for short, is a custom recovery built with ease of use and customization in mind. We started from the ground up by taking AOSP recovery and loading it with the standard recovery options, then added a lot of our own features. It’s a fully touch driven user interface – no more volume rocker or power buttons to mash. The GUI is also fully XML driven and completely theme-able. You can change just about every aspect of the look and feel.

INFORMATION
There are 2 version:
- Flykernel 0.8 with only TWRP (v 2.3.2.3)
- Flykernel 0.8 with both TWRP (v 2.3.2.3) and CWM (v 6.1.0.9).
I also made a custom theme, see Download and Usage.
Its named: 'This is black and white'. As the name says its a black and white minimal theme.
INSTALLATION
- Make sure you are on a FXP based jellybean rom.
- Choose one of the the two images
- Flash them with fastboot : fastboot flash boot IMAGENAME.img
- You will also need the wifi modules of flykernel (0.8fix): http://www.mediafire.com/?16ytgk56ioiko6z
USAGE
- TWRP only recovery:
Use volume down when home led is pink
- CWM / TWRP dual:
Use volume down for CWM when home led is pink
Use power button for TWRP when home led is pink
- Custom TWRP theme:
Place the ui.zip (from download folder mediafire) in /sdcard/TWRP/theme

BUGS
As far as I know and is tested there are 2 bugs:
- Mount USB Storage in TWRP
- Reboot to recovery (boot from recovery and rom)
Please report bugs if you find them.
Much work has gone in to this, so I would appreciate a Thanks or a donation
Also I want to give credit to Championswimmer for providing the base dualrecovery ramdisk.

Congrats bro you are ****ing awasome:beer:

File Type
My id10t corporate network drops img files, cannot download. I'll check it out when I'm home. Thanks! :highfive:
EDIT: Great Stuff! Successfully flashed dual, booted into both with no problem. Then I wiped and installed PACv18 with all my extras in one go by queueing the zip files. Rebooted the phone, all 100%
One thing I did notice: the time shown in TWRP was not my local time, I have GMT +2, where the time that was displayed was UMT -6 (Houston, Chicago those places) I think it's CST (not sure)
I did not attempt a backup/restore operation yet, but wiping flashing, queueing woks 100%
Good Job thomas !!

Very sweety thing! Using it daily - very great job done! I like it! Thanks man! Dual Recovery makes my day =)

Just to clarify: So, if you were not on fly before, you need to flash WiFi modules from flykernel thread? I was on FlyKernel and WiFi still works like a charm

Yes thats correct (will update OP). Because sony devices dont have a seperate recovery partition, it needs to be embedded with the kernel.

do i need to wipe anything after install new kernel??

I did not need to. I only wiped after successful boot to test if wipe and flashing works ok

To clarify a Android memory management issue (which I was unclear on) for others;
Both TWRP and TWRP/ CWM recoveries in the new kernel image increase the size of the files to be flashed into the boot sector (TWRP = 6.8MB, TWRP/ CWM = 8.3MB), FlyKernel 0.8 including CWM is only 5.3MB.
If a user is using FXP150 stock ROM build with the Xperia Keyboard flashed as well the /system folder is virtually full (974kB free only). Don't let that worry you! The boot sector that the new kernel image files (including recoveries) occupies is completely separate to the /system ROM part of the device and it will fit!!

This is fantastic, didn't know TWRP was miles ahead of CWM in terms of user friendliness.

Can you share your sources please? I want to port TWRP on my Xperia Mini

Just extract boot image

Disclaimer
I'm not responsible for any damages to your phone. Neither am I responsible, if the phone becomes alive, runs away, dominates or kills you ;P
Also, if you don't know how to flash this, then you probably shouldn't... just saying...
All this work is done "blind", since I don't have a note, so be thankful to the testers, who were willing to sacrifice their devices

How to install/update
- see post #2
Thanks to
utkanos - for help with the framebuffer
DAGr8, Johnsondr80, lpsi2000, BLOWNCO - for testing my crap
koush and anyone who worked/works on cwm/cm - without them this wouldn't have been possible
and possibly lots of other people who did important android work, but are sadly forgotten
Good luck, and happy flashing.
Please report bugs with as much detail as possible, and preferably in a separate paragraph
How to install
Odin (this will increase the flash counter)
- put your phone into download mode
- in odin choose pda, and select the .tar.md5 file and flash
Note: there are several guides how to use odin on xda
Alternative (this will NOT increase the flash counter but is harder to do)
- get adb (from the android sdk for example)
- root your phone
-> there are several ways how to archive that, the easiest is probably flashing a rooted system.img using Odin (flashing system does not increase the counter)
- start your phone normally and activate USB debugging (Settings, Applications, Development or so, enable USB debugging)
- extract the recovery.img from either the Odin.tar.md5 or from the CWM.zip and put it onto your sdcard
- connect the phone to your computer, dont mount/share the sdcard
- run the following commands:
Code:
> adb shell
~ su
# dd if=/sdcard/recovery.img of=/dev/block/mmcblk0p22
<some output>
# exit
~ exit
- the path (/sdcard/recovery.img) might need to be adjusted
- NOTE: this can brick your phone, if you have typos, make sure you know what you are doing
Updating CWM
- download the update.zip from the CWM link and put it on your sdcard
- reboot to recovery and install it, on the next reboot you should have the new version running
- alternatively all the above can also be used to update
Back to stock
- get the correct stock recovery.img (the at&t one should also work for telus, Bell and rogers, otherwise look for the correct one)
- use the Odin or Alternative to flash the stock recovery img back
x_x reserved x_x
flashed it and everything is working great here big UPs

hey guys i was using beta 1 then i went ahead and flashed this after doing so i getting nothing but force closes on everything ? any help is appreciated ? i was thinking would flashing da_g's 3e recovery fix this?
I can confirm sdcards issue is fixed. Once again - amazing work! Much appreciated.
I agree the fonts are really small and hard to see and while we're on that subject - are there any plans to port the touch interface?

The best way to flash this is to make a nandroid backup first. Then flash CWM Beta 3. Then restore from the backup.
At least, that's what worked for me. No FCs here.

removed some old apps
replaced the stock joyos launcher with Espier launcher (more smooth and more iPhone like)
replaced the boot image
added some build.prop tweaks
Overall performance is great and stable, just like CM7.2
Standard installation instructions:
Do the same stuff as with CM7.2
Complete noob's installation instructions:
0. FIRST OF ALL CHECK IF YOUR PHONE IS A GSM (R800i) PHONE! If you live in America/Canada, it most probably isn't! Also check if your bootloader is already unlocked, if it's not, go here
1. Download Flashtool from here (Make sure you also install the correct drivers!)
2. Download the stock .62 baseband FTF from here
3. Load it into Flashtool
4. Put your device in flash mode when asked (Hold BACK while connecting to USB)
5. Wait for it to finish
6. Get fastboot from here and unpack it to a convenient location (Again, make sure your drivers are OK!)
7. Click the download link below here and open the PLOYOS.zip and copy the boot.img you can find in there into the fastboot folder
8. Shift right-click on the blank background of the folder (Have nothing selected) and click open command window here (or whatever that is in your system language)
9. Type
Code:
fastboot flash boot boot.img
and wait for it to finish flashing
10. Then boot up your phone and press the volume down key when the led in your power button gets lit
11. In recovery navigate with the volume keys to data/factory reset, then confirm with the home button (or search, not sure) then do the same thing but select cache, and then move to advanced and in there choose wipe dalvik cache
12. Go back and choose mounts and storage>mount sdcard
13. Plug in your USB and copy the iPlayOS.zip / PLOYOS.zip to your SD card
14. Go back all the way and choose Install zip from SD Card
15. Look for the iPlayOS.zip / PLOYOS.zip and wait for it to finish installing
16. Reboot, and all should work now! If it doesn't, you have either done something wrong or your phone isn't a GSM Xperia Play
I hope that is a clear enough guide ! At least I don't have to explain anything about that now (I hope)
Download links:
Old
PLOYOS v1 (original)
New
iPlay OS v2 Full
iPlay OS v2 Lite version (To see wich apps I removed refer to the changelog above)
'OMG YOU DELETED THIS AND THAT APP THAT I REALY NEED'
Don't sweat, just download either the full version, or both the lite and full version,
open them both up in winrar, navigate both to system/app and just drag the apps that you realy need from the full version to the light version.
thanks to
ijustintouch for the awesome boot animation

Make sure you got a GSM device (R800i)
If you live in America, you probably don't have one.
If you do have a GSM device, try a fresh install with the stock 62 firmware, flash the boot.img included in the ployos.zip in fastboot, and do a full factory reset before flashing just to be sure ( wipe data/factory reset, wipe cache, advanced>wipe dalvik cache)

Same here, white screen after reboot to recovery
Flashed it trough hasoon2000's toolkit, works, just a bit buggy in the looks, writing system works, backup works, flashing works. Will test a ROM as soon as the full sense is out.

Hi everyone,
I have decompiled the Lloir's recovery image and I have added the necessary files to support offmode charging. I seem to have broken my own device config when it comes to compiling recovery (I haven't tried compiling CM9), so I just put it in this thread.
Have fun!
PS: I'm not a dev, but I have some experience with compiling and understanding device configs, thanks to my time at the development section for my old Wildfire.

Offmode charging means charging when the phone has been shut down.
I'm sure you all know that recovery sometimes reboots while backing up. Because the necessary files for offmode charging are in recovery, and recovery needs to activate those binaries, your phone eventually reboots while charging offfmode.
That also applies to the recovery mode itself: when your phone stays long enough in recovery, it will reboot to normal/Android mode.

I always want an alternative to CWM coz it has bare basic features. TWRP was an option which had open source code so i tried it. But cant seem to be able to boot it. Something important is missing. But i may abandon it coz madmaxx said he might support desire X with 4EXT. and once 4ext comes, all the others will be rendered useless(kidding of course)
Regards
Yasir

Noob question: what is the easiest way to flash a recovery without dozens of adb commands?
Only way now is
"fastboot erase cache"
"fastboot flash boot boot.img"

Are you sure?
Read my lips...
Graphic has been fixed , but as the recovery is closed source, I can't feed custom board config to fix UMS. That's why I'm also working on twrp.

Hi Yasir, thank you so much for the fixes.
Graphics are working %100.
Backing up is working, will test restore soon.
What else would you like me to test?

Aww man, it's on! Just be careful and don't brick it though (not that it'll happen). Keep us posted!

Will it not work out of the box since it is the same hardware of the c6802?

No, this is only for devs so they can use it in their own ROMs, or if they want to use this on its own. It is not possible to flash this as it is right now, so you'll have to wait

It's the system folder. So you'd need to create a series of instructions on where everything goes, permissions, root, and recovery reflashed... (i.e. flashable zip)
48 hours and I bet someone will have it working. I'm not able to at the moment. I think most of you know why..
Would it work to flash the system.img thru fastboot? (And boot.img if necessary)
On the Galaxy S4, we flashed the GE rom, but had to use a touchwiz kernel. Not sure how it would work on the Ultra..

Inside a system.img will usually be 3 different compressed files. (depending on the phone)
Only one of these files will contain all the folders that we are usually familiar with:
app
bin
etc
fonts
lib
media
...
Its best to wait and see what Sony have done with the GPe devices. Probably nothing has changed, and partition info will be the same... but there could be a couple of changes that may brick your device. It's very unlikely, however I'd recommend not flashing the system.img without know exactly whats in there.

LOL...
I don't mean not to try and make a ROM based on this system image, but the files need to be extracted and then a ROM created...
EDIT: Try a normal kernel. (sony) Its not CM based.

well i got inside the system.img and there is the /system and i pushed it on to my device.
Trying a stock kernel but i highly doubt that will boot it at all
Edit: Stock Sony never gets past bootloader. no boot animation.
Getting a ZU. Will look into it
24hrs someone will get it running smoothe and make a full guide for all how to flash well done devs.

Didn't work thru fastboot.
writing 'boot'...
FAILED (remote: image is not a boot image)
finished. total time: 0.937s
Did it thru DD and it worked. Hello Google logo Will play a bit more.
dd if=/path/to/inputfil/boot.img of=/dev/block/blablablabla
fill in the placeholders yourself. Although i did not test yet if the dumped bootimage does work good. I just have no time since i have to finish my thesis now. But if you could do the dirty work would be cool
If something goes wrong just restore the boot with Flashtool in flashmode.
Regards

Incredibly frustrating this is.
I get the bootloader to start. I get the system to boot but it crashes. but its because i cant enter a reovery to delete user data. its always there.
How the hell can i delete data partition from fastboot or flashmode? as the stock gpe bootloader doesnt have a recovery.
EDIT: Ok i figured it out. Had to play with different kernels and thank god twrp has a terminal it doesnt boot im afraid.
I tried with
GPE kernel + gpe System = Bootloader load . Starts boot animation for 1 sec then crash.
revolution kernel + gpe system = bootloader load. Starts Boot animation 1 sec then crash.
Omnirom + gpe system + revolution kernel (dirty flash no wipes) = Bootloader loads. starts bootanimation. Boots. No mobile connection or wifi or anything. and buggy as hell
Now i need to play with the kids so l8ers.

Might just be a shot in the dark, but maybe you could install cwm or twrp by itself? Maybe from a different gpe device? If it is separated I.E. Not like sony's version it stands to reason you may be able to flash a recovery.
Or maybe flash a boot.img that has a recovery and boot it straight to recovery, factory reset, wipe caches, power off, and flash the correct boot.img after that?

well ive done that. the problem is that the gpe boot.img doesnt flash normal but must be pushed with a dd command.
Anyways. Just got a tip that it might need the userdata.img. so thats my next step. *sigh* thats the last thing i do now. Getting tired of this ;D
