Easiest way to root is to use cf-root, full instructions in the thread
Match up the bit in bold to find out which kernel you need
Kernel: 2.6.35.7-I9100|PKH1
If you want a newer stock rom try this thread, again to root you will want to use cf-root.
As far as a good custom rom combo, try ninph kernel and villanrom, links in my sig.

I just got a SGS2 and am hoping to root it but finding it very difficult...much harder to do compared to jailbreaking my iPhone any i am not that tech savvy so any help will be great.

Please if you could, give me a dumbed down version on how to do this.

That is FULL root
Root has nothing to do with free apps that is available via the Android market .
Comes with the phone out of the box .
Neither root nor rom are involved .
That is presuming you do not mean illegal theftware/Warez phone apps ,such posts are banned on XDA .

You may just want to update to a newer stock rom, see the 2nd link in my post.
That is a very old rom, there has been quite a lot of performance improvements since then. Try KG6 or KH3.
If you want to go for a custom rom, see my sig for what I use ninph+VR is a stock based combo where as CM7 is a whole new and different rom, though it has limitations and may not be good enough for everyone at this point.
Rooting allows you to use root apps, terminal emulators, titanium backup, CWM recovery (comes with the kernel) which allows full device backups.
Rooting is not the same as jailbreaking, you can sideload apps without rooting.

You can sideload any apps, there are also free apps in the market, and there are also loads of apps on xda if you look around.
Try the getjar store
Or appbrains
Android doesnt have the same limitations as iso, you can install apps from 3rd party's without rooting.

I'm unclear about what I need to do to root my phone with it being locked on contract to O2 (UK) and with carrier branded firmware.
What I'd like to do is root the phone and upgrade the firmware if possible, especially if there are performance improvements.
I don't understand the KG6 and KH3 - what are these are how do they differ?
I don't really want to mod or get anything custom, I just want to keep it simple: root and get a more up-to-date firmware, if possible.

I'm not really that good with the technical stuff and am not confident enough at the moment to just go follow the instructions straight away - too many questions I am unsure on and uncertainties.
First, do I upgrade the firmware first or do I root first?
Do I need to upgade to a carrier-branded firmware - is there a newer on available?
Is it possible to upgrade to a non-branded firmware - or will that not work as I am on contract/locked with O2?
Which version do I upgrade to? I have been advised KE2 but I have also been told the latest version is KE7? I don't really understand which I should be trying to upgrade to and where to start. I'm finding it a bit confusing.
If I can upgrade, what settings should I make sure I have noted?
What happens to all the data?
It just feels like a minefield at the moment. :-(

You can flash any firmware via odin, it doesn't matter that your phone is locked, but it will stay locked.
Kg6 and kh3 are versions. You can update to them, once you flash a normal stock rom you won't be o2 branded anymore.
If you want a very simple setup with root, flash kh3 firmware from that thread, and then cf root kh3, you will be stock but have root and all the goodies.
You flash the rom first, then the cf root kernel via odin and you will have root.
As far as walking you though it, the guide is clear in the thread with the firmware, and me typing it out again wouldn't help I don't think.
As far as data, if you use a non wipe version, you won't lose anything, but you can backup your sms, mms, call log to your gmail with sms backup plan plus.
User app data can't be backed up without root.

I don't understand the naming convention or the differences between the different versions, such as Kg6 and kh3. What's the significance of 'kg' as opposed to 'kh' ?
Who makes these versions?
I've also been told about a 'ke7' version/update.
What is the latest branded firmware for O2 for the Galaxy S2? If there's a newer one, should I use that? Or would I be better off with one of the others above?
Do all these versions have the same GUI & look & feel? Do they all have TouchWiz 4? etc

Do I 'lose' anything by flashing with a non-branded firmware?
Sorry to be a pain, finding it hard to grasp. It may be simpler than I am making it but I'm just concerned about damaging my phone or rendering it unusable.

I chose the CF root option referenced in this thread and rooted 2 days ago. Very easy and straight forward. I'm a newbie to all this, and I'm finding it a lot of fun. I figured my car's ECU is modified, so why shouldn't my phone's be something other than stock?
They are all stock tw4 roms.
They all come from samsung, leaks.
K is the year, E G H etc is the month of releases.
H august, G is July, and so on and so forth.
You will lose any random bloatware o2 added.

Ok, sorted that last thing, I booted into the wrong mode.
Done a flash again with the KG5. Now, I see this my my firmware details:

cf-root kernel first mate...
First of all, you have to flash a cf-root kernel with odin using a .tar file. Then you can flash the kernel you want, if it is compatible with your rom. Usually, this is said in kernel thread.. Hope this helps!!

You should read Chainfire's CF-Root thread and use CF-Root kernel for XWKJ2 in 7. post => http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1103399&highlight=CF+Root

Flash using the cf-root that matches your stock/current kernel, make a cwm backup, then you can change to whatever Rom you fancy. Me personally i just rooted and removed all the Orange crap and tried a couple of Roms but in the end the phone is that good im happy with rooted stock so restored my backup

I give up -- I thought I know enough to safely root my phone but it's hard =D. New things keeps coming up..
I just wanted someone to pin point me that this is the cf-root you should be using for your phone details as it is the best for you and with that you can easily install other custom ROMs (I want sensation one) and gain root access ofcourse.
Nevermind, I will keep doing the homework until I crack it up!
ANY help is still appreciated because I have files ready..

Hi i read up on rooting my S2 on this website and youtube and i was confident that i could do it, they all made it sound and look easy.
I went ahead and flashed my Kernel (XWKF3) using ODIN 1.85 and it went through process said successful and rebooted as said but soon as the first black screen comes on saying "SAMSUNG GALAXY S2 GTI9100" it just stays on this screen and nothing else happens.
It is therefore Semi-Bricked, i have tried several kernels and firmware and then it totally bricks, thou lucky i bought a usb jig that puts it back into download mode.
My advice is to be 100% sure and do a lot of research before proceeding and if anyone got an idea what i can do to get my phone working again please let me know
If you chose to use Hellcat's Kernel, then you don't need CF-ROOT Kernel.

Just download the Kernel that matches your current Kernel version.
To find out what Kernel you are using, Settings -> About
Else you can just go to Dialer, then *#1234#
The PDA version is also your Kernel Version.
Run ODIN, select the hellcat kernel *.tar file under PDA, then start.
DO NOT REPARTITION

You say PDA version is your kernal version, it means KJ2 is my kernal version. I can't find the match for this kernal on hellcat's page. Though my Baseband version in 'about' shows XXKI4. Since it's matches the kernal on Hellcat's page, I thought this is the kernal version.
So now I have to find a kernal version for my PDA version? And what is the difference between cf-root and the hellcat's kernals?

my advice to you, being a 2 months old newbie myself, is to read for a few days around XDA. you can learn alot and make sure you don't mess things up.
and get yourself a JIG off ebay ASAP. It's like 2 bucks, and it's worth it.
I myself, flashed CF-Root-SGS2_XX_OXA_KH1-v4.1-CWM4 on my SII and than plugged JIG to get rid off the yellow triangle. It was easy. For now I'm running like that on stock to get familiar in android cos this new to me (former iPhone user). After a "test/learning" mode I'll probably flash Galnet MIUI.

and that's why I flashed the "KH1" version cos I'm still unsure the other "close/similar" versions I can flash on my device.
If there is an exact version of CF-Root for your version flash that one and follow CFs instructions on the first page of his thread (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1103399).

I have only ever used CF-Root for rooting so I can't comment on Hellcat etc but what I can say is that all the information required for CF-Root is in Chainfire's thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1103399
It specifically states how to find out which file to use at the bottom of the very 1st post.
I was totally new to all this rooting and flashing firmware business until I found the XDA forum and I can only speak from personal experience but I have found that as long as you read, read then read again and follow the instuctions to the absolute letter you shouldn't have any difficulties.
Thanks for the tip man but I can't find cf-root KJ2 for my phone. I tried searching and failed. I'll keep looking.
Ive rooted my phone via odin. Flashed cf root kernel kf1 to remove the yellow triangle. But as i was about to flash the rom using cwm recovery mode, its opening up to a "manual mode", hence i cant flash the roms. Any ideas what might cause this?

I am confused in choosing the kernal for my phone. You see my baseband version shows XXKI4 which matches a kernal back there, it confuses me alot. But my kernal version shows JPKJ2, for which I can't find a kernal. Whole lot of confusion in choosing a matching kernal.. =(
Will GT-I9100_XWKJ2_insecure work for my kernel version JPKJ2?
And I found this kernel too; CF-Root-SGS2_XW_XEF_KJ2-v5.0-CWM5.zip

Go to Settings -> About phone -> Kernel Version. Note the string present there:
2.6.35.7-I9100XXKG1-CL349526
What matters most (KG1) in this case, is in bold. Try to find the matching file under downloads:
CF-Root-SGS2_XX_OXA_KG1-v4.1-CWM4.zip
The XX and OXA identifiers are not that important. Usually a "KG1" kernel is a "KG1" kernel, and that is that. Sometimes (pretty rare) it happens there will be multiple different kernels with the same name in different firmwares, that are actually different. If this happens, they are usually only very minor changes and you should expect them to still be fully compatible. I include the "XX" and "OXA" identifiers so the very advanced users can deduce from which full firmware I have taken the kernel file.
Don't worry too much, just find the matching download and use it. What if there is no matching download ? You can ask me to make one, but I can tell you right now, I very very rarely make CF-Root's for kernels on request, unless it is the very latest kernel that has been released by Samsung. In the latter case, be sure to let me know. If there's no match and I'm not making one, try finding the closest match. You should treat "KG1" as a number, but instead of 1-9, we have 1-9, A-Z (where A would be 10, and Z would be 35). "KG2" is really close to "KG1", "KF1" is not close to "KG1" at all. I hope that makes sense.

I was having troubles uploading the correct Kernal to my phone ... i tried about 6 times different Kernels ... and every time my phone would simply refuse to boot!
i'm now stuck with 4.0.3 afraid to flash anything else ... i have no WIFI also with this 4.0.3 ...
I need to flash back completely to a previous more stable version of android ... however i want to use Heimdal! it's awesome ... but seriously under supported right now.
i want to use the VK rom with the abyss Kernal ... i hear it's a killer combo.
But i just don't know how to do this with Heimdal without killing my phone for a day again ...

You tried 6 different kernels to root your phone?
Dude, you were supposed to use the ONE kernel that is meant for the PARTICULAR build of Android on your phone. You can't just use any random CF-Root kernel to root.
Did you even read the instructions? Actually, you should re-read all of post #1 of the CF-Root thread... specifically the portion that said "Help! What file do I use ?"

oops my bad ... i mean i rooted with the wrong Kernel first because i didn't know what i really needed to make a phone rooted so that i can then install custom roms and kernals.
I was like - lets root my phone with abyss Kernel ... sounds good! didn't know i had to use the right one ... yeah so in short i cocked up my phone!
but then I then i re flashed the entire system with new rom i got from a german site using Heimdal because it was the ONLY place i could understand what the package contents were: I9100XXLPQ_I9100OXALPQ_I9100XXLPQ_HOME.tar.md5

modem.bin

sbl.bin
zimage (kernel)
and all the new LPQ official ... my phone came back to life ... then i flashed the correct Kernals for LPQ of which i think there were 2 of them! one old one new! nothing worked ... no boot whatsoever
i mean my flash count is up to 6 now!
anyway the point being ... whats the next best under 4.0.3 ... because i want my wifi back :s and none of the root kernals work on my phone!
and i want to flash everything at the same time - flashing kernels simply lock my phone every time and i have to flash back the original ... so confused sorry i'm a noob job boob alert
i much prefer to use heimdal as well because i'm using a MAssC grrrr

Flash count is largely unimportant unless you plan in sending the phone in for warranty purposes.
There ARE two LPQ CF-root kernels, but one says "PROPER" and one doesn't. You should be trying the one that says proper.
But there are much newer firmwares versions than LPQ anyways. XWLP7 (unbranded UK) just came out recently.
But I don't use Heimdall, so I can't suggest anything about it, sorry.

Yesterday I have received an update to ICS 4.0.3., so the phone is no more rooting.
I used the speed way to root in your forum with recovery mode indicated in you forum
I can have super user, but with the application autostars, I have a message that phoe is not rooted.
with the kernel that I have battery is more spending.
Can I have a kernel that reseolve this problem of rooting and the battery. I would like to continue to use french and arabic.
If I can not install a rom, it is avoid me to loose all data.

CFRoot thread. Read the whole first page & pay particular attention to the section that says 'Help ! Which file do I use ?' in bold red. If you can read/follow instructions, you should be able to root your phone quickly/easily.

no with this much info please find the corresponding Cf-root kernel and flash the same

I used odin and after, I have a triangle.
I have a usbJg, I use it and I don't have more a triangle, but he asked me to put original kernel. I didn't find it.
I don't know if it is ok now

yes wifi is always related to kernel and some times it happens so, try deleting ur network and then reboot ur phone and let the wifi detect ur network again and if its secured one then reconnect using ur netwrk pass word and see

To resolve the wifi problem, I put with Odin
First Kernel_I9100XXLPQ insecure
after I put Kernel_I9100XXLPQ secure
Now, I have wifi, access to root, no triangle.
The last problem is CWM, when I opened it I have this message: This version of CWM manager should be used with CF-root v5.0 or newer
CWM opens but I havn't restore and backup menu.
Do I root again with The kernel :
CF-Root-SGS2_XX_XEO_LPQ-PROPER-v5.4-CWM5
to resolve problem of CWM without having another new problems.

the cwm issue is because u have reflashed the stock kernel after Cf-rooting ur phone, now ur phone even though rooted is having limited access to root
so i would suggest u to dwnld the latest siyah kernel .zip file and flash the same thro recovery to get the latest full wrking CWM with touch recovery

It seems you finally managed to mess up your system .
I do really not intend to be biting but seriously: at this point (reviewing the history of what happened) I can only suggest you restart from scratch by installing stock firmware. Rooting with CF-root is usually just one step without any side effects, assuming you follow all the good advices given by Chainfire.

I'm sorry, it is not a question orf chaired or another. I was looking how to do to resolve problem,
in google, when I searched for wifi problem there was a post indicating that.
So, to have a phone working, if I well understand, I have to flash with Odin the stock firmare (it means I will loose everything?), whre can I find this stock firm.
After, I rooted with Cf-root for LPF (the one that you have indicated it to me)

My details are :
Android version: 4.04
Model number gt-i9100
Baseband version: i9100XXLQ6
Kernal version: I9100xxlbq-cl911584
build number: IMM76D.XXLQB
I downloaded
ODIN 1.85
CF-Root-SGS2_XX_XEO_LQB-v5.6-CWM5
I am not seeing the original kernal file up for download for my version. What else do I need for my root? Is there any advice such as best method and such. Thank you kindly everyone. Mods, if I posted in the wrong section, please move my thread to the correct location.
That's all you need mate. This kernel is declared safe by Chainfire but as any 4.0.4 kernel should not be used to wipe data because of possibility of emmc cap bug rendering your phone bricked. Root with this kernel but make sure to switch to custom safe one before attempting to wipe data.

Essentially flashing using a 4.04 firmware will brick the phone? or is it when I flash, it will be bad to flash using a 4.04 firmware? Sooo confused.

Now the question is: which kernel to choose, CF or Siyah ? I'm planning to use CyanogenMod 10 on this phone, does kernel version matter at all in this case ?

If GotBrickbug app by CF said your chip is safe than it shouldn't matter what kernel you use. Safe hardware.
Personally I always prefer rooting with CF kernels that match my FW version. Then if you're still unsure about the chip... flash siyah, go to advanced (while still in recovery) > reboot recovery. Then wipe data with siyah kernel just to be on the safe side. I always keep siyah 3.5.2 (the first transisiontl ics/jb kernel) for those purposes. CM10 built in kernels are all considered safe so that's the last time you'll ever be worried about it.

your phone will be rooted and u can then choose to install a custom kernel like Siyah v 4.1.5 on ur phone which gives u the latest CWM recovery thro which u can install any custom rom of ur choice(meant for i9100 though) on ur phone

Samsung releases firmware in various regions and with varied carriers. So I bet that till it is officially released it will take time but when it does you will get OTA if your are on 'STOCK' ROM. but if you move away to custom rom then you will have to update manually.

To revert back assuming you didn't do backup before, download 4.0.4 firmware for your region on sammobile and flash it using odin.. Then to upgrade it when official update are up just hit OTA, kies, or flash it via odin the same way like you flash 4.0.4..
If you don't have idea how to flash then google it, theres plenty much tutorials out there.. hope it helps

Actually I get confused myself hehe, by "Flash using CF, or CM 10" you mean flash what? The rest are ok..
Well, let's put this simple, Flash the CF-Root for your phone then you're rooted now, if you want to flash custom rom such as cm10 then flash it (the cm10 zip file to be flashed on recovery mode and don't forget to read the cm10 instruction before & after flashing), if you want to get rid of the triangle then do it with triangle away, finally to unroot and revert to stock, just flash stock firmware via odin..
