Want to learn to dev, any teachers? - AT&T LG Optimus G

I really want to learn how to dev and I simply have no idea how to start. All the info I find on source.android.com is Greek to me, so I'm hoping to find an android guru to guide the way. I'm sure others here are interested also. Basically I want to help make the LGOG better. Any one feel like starting a classroom thread?

im not tryin to be rude even tho is going to come off like that. just google it...the answer will come in less then a sec or ask on a help sticky. dont make a new thread because you might be feeling lazy. good luck with your new hobby
Easiest way to look at them. The Kernel is the brain, it is the control point. Everything goes through it.
ROM is more of what you see, the programs and such.
While it is much more indepth that's the basics of it. Just remember to never use either that is not built for your phone.

This doesn't belong in the development section, or any. A Google search would yield results. And if you don't know the difference, you shouldn't even consider rooting.

^ I was thinking the same thing. Hence the reason I posted the question.
Goggle doesn't always explain things as well as someone with hands on experience.

Thanks for your time.
Your explanation helps. I have messed with linux kernels on my computer before, but I wanted to make sure about this because its my phone and not a spare pc during around. Lol

Well...
You have to admit, at least the subject is dead on.
Symptom of a larger issue, I believe...
We need to separate things a bit better. All the support for the ROMS going on in here seems to be confusing people?
Dev forum, release forum, support forum, perhaps? XDA is becoming a huge mess which explains the recent off-shoots.

[Q] Android Hacking - Where do I start?

Title really says it all. Everyone has to start somewhere.
I'm interested in digging in and seeing what I can do. I'm not really a programmer, but I can learn. I'm pretty comfortable with linux, having used it for many years (not really much in the last few years, though). I've used and installed Mandrake/Mandriva, Sabayon, and Gentoo; and I'm going to install Mint, Ubuntu, Sabayon, or Arch over VirtualBox sometime in the next few days.
Are there any sites/forums/articles that I can read that would give me a beginners look at Android hacking/development? Are there any other things I should know?

I would start with doing themes. Then from there, make your way into apps, then rom development.
If your interested, I can give you a link that gives some great ADW turning instructions.
That would be great. I've done some theming back when I had my Droid, mostly just changing things around to suit my desires. Never done any app development, though.
I'm wanting to contribute to the Nook Tablet community, if I can.

Here is that link, it is long, but will make you understand really good.

As for the nook development, idk about that sorry, may want to ask in that section.
I really appreciate it.
In terms of Nook dev, I figure if I can figure out Android hacking as a whole, I can apply that to the NT.
Alright man, good luck!

Thus far, I've not had the chance to tinker. I've been far too busy lately. I've read over the post a little, but I will follow it more carefully when I have the time to sit down and devote some attention to it.

[Q] Developing Roms

Whats the best starting point to learn how to develop a rom. I'm a fast learner and wanted to start a new hobby and I love anything tech related
I'm not trying to sound like an ass but Google is your best friend. All kinds of info, guides, and videos out there. I found a lot when I was reading up on it.

We got a million threads on this.
The chef central on XDA is also a good resource.

What the Flapp! ?

Why Flapp, why?..... nice Mr Rogers though

And users wonder why development stops on devices.
Flappjaxx, I don't even know you dude, but you're awesome. Your kernel makes my phone feel like it's worth something, and your AOSPxXx ROM is beyond awesome. Please come back. We'll need you if we ever get 4.2. Until then, I really hope you stick around.

This thread will get locked too, but basically people complaining about his work, and putting some of his personal info out there. Also people with their sense of entitlement and lack of gratitude, understanding, and reading comprehension.

Thread closed, enough drama, Thank You.

Pretty bad with computers, toaster ovens

and technology in general so I was gonna pay the twenty or thirty dollars to have one of the people that advertise in these forums do root my phone. Any longtime members have any feedback? Or recommendations there was at least two groups advertising in the rooting xdaforum last night...thank you.

Don't. I don't know a heck of a lot about your phone but I've seen this stuff go around and often you are wasting money
Of course this is just my opinion and take it how you'd like, but I know it can't be to hard to follow directions for most everyone and I'm sure there is clearly written guides to do so. Just go to your phones forum and seek a guide and read up. Ask for advice when this fails
And again just my opinion here but if you can't root your own device chances are it shouldn't have root access. What I mean by this is that you will have a greater chance of bricking down the road if you don't learn how to do things yourself, I see it all the time, so do yourself a favor and learn about your phone before it becomes anything more than stock, or else you have a high chance of having it be nothing more than an expensive brick
Feel free to ask more questions and I'll do my best to help, also feel free to tell me to mind my own business, either way...

Hell.,I need you in business brah. I found it to be solid advice and what I thought was the smartest route anyway. The learn about your phone argument is the truth. It's like Yoda, then you, then the Dalai Lama. I appreciate your wise words and will now trek down the path less taken for me. Wish me luck brother. And thank you!
PS any good video instructionals on YouTube you recommend over others.Little more of a visual learner ya know...long lists of written directions gives my ADHD the ****in fits! Thanks again.

Thanks, I'd be willing to send you a video link but not sure your phone, HTC one?
I'd just go to you phones forum and look for the stickies in either general or dev section, should be all the info needed to root and often a link to a YouTube video if its complicated

Hey thanks again it is the ATT HTC One. It's pretty much out the box. Just a ton of pics and apps added.

To be honest. If you dont can root your phone than you maybe let it be. I mean: with root you can kill (brick) your phone if you dont know what youre doing. If you do it yourself (maybe with some guidance) you will be willing to learn and search so it will be easier for you.
