[Q] GS3 waits up to two minutes before placing a call - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

My stock Verizon GS3 waits a while before it makes a call.
I can click on a favorite, dial a number directly, or select someone from my contact list. When I hit dial, the phone does nothing for up to two minutes. It remains completely usable (I can surf the web on 4G, open and close apps, whatever). Just no phoning. Then, after a delay of anywhere from seconds to two minutes, it will suddenly dial the number. From then on, it works the way it should. The next time I try to dial, assuming I have waited a bit, it all happens again. If I try using the phone right away after it has sort of "woken up" to the fact that it should dial numbers, then I can continue to dial new numbers without a delay. Only after it sits a bit does it get stuck again. If I try to hit the "dial" button a number of times (aka, retry dialing because the phone isn't doing what it should) it queues these requests up and once it gets unstuck, it will dial all the numbers one after the other.
This issue also affects two other widgets (and nothing else that I can ascertain). These are the Assistive Light widget and the Negative Colors widget. They behave the exact same as the dialer. I can hit them as many times as I want, and it will simply seem to ignore my button presses. But, after a delay of up to two minutes, suddenly every button press I hit will be queued up and executed all at once (causing the screen to flash negative and positive, and the flash to go on and off a bunch of times).
I am running go launcher and the stock android 4.0.4 on Verizon.
Some specific questions:
1) What should I look for in the logs to indicate that the phone is placing a call (or handling the Assistive Light request)? I have tried to isolate the portion of the logs around when this happens but they are so dense I have no idea if I am even looking in the right area.
2) I occasionally see "VoIPInterfaceManager" referenced in the logs, but as far as I know I am not using VoIP (I had skype installed at one point but then deleted it when this problem started thinking that maybe it was interfering, but to no avail). Is this in any way relevant?
3) I have an extra SD card installed (yanked from my old DroidX). Could that be the issue? I just pulled it out again, but the phone does not always misbehave, just sometimes (say, 75% of the time) and it just happens to be playing nice right now even before I pulled the card so I don't know if it helped or not.
4) Is there anything I can do to start diagnosing this issue (i.e. apps to try to diagnose what is going on, developer modes to put the phone in)? How about anything people can suggest to even start narrowing down what the culprit may be (hardware? downloaded app? os?)
Thanks, and sorry for the long posting. This is making me nuts.

So several days have passed, and it appears to still be working. I suspect the sd card was the culprit. No idea why. But I am a happy camper again.

new to htc and to hero.. performance issues

bought a HERO a month ago.
Initially things were fine, but then the phone has developed a lot of lag.
When I tap the PHONE button at the bottom of the home screen, it takes almost 3-4 seconds before the keypad comes up.
When I click on an Email account, it takes up to 5 seconds for the email list to load, and an equal amount of time before a tapped email opens up.
All this used to happen in less than a second earlier. I have not installed any apps from the market which are running at any time, and even loading up the phone in safe mode has not made a difference.
Also, the trackball is not being very responsive. It takes a good amount of pressing it before moving it around for the trackball to work. Is the trackball supposed to not do anything if moved very lightly, or if i just brush it softly with my finger and it moves, but nothing happens on the screen? It works only if there is significant pressure on the trackball.
htc has a stock answer for everything "HARD RESET". i don't even know if there is a way to backup all the data including contacts, messages etc and then put them back again after a hard reset.
I wonder if the phone is defective in some way?
Just flash a new ROM. Also, I know many people will disagree with me, but get TasKiller (the one by Thibaut Nicholas), as kill all the tasks. When the phone starts functioning again, go to TasKiller and ignore all the tasks that start up first (should be the bare minimum ones), and then turn on Auto-Taskkill. This way when you put the phone to sleep, all the running tasks except for the necessary ones will be killed. I've found this keeps my phone very fast

[Q] Has anyone had problems with freezing...

Has anyone had problems with their phone freezing/crashing randomly? Basically my phone would freeze or crash (a force close) when I sleep it too quickly.
Sometimes it's not even sleeping it, it's un-sleeping too. Or even navigating between applications.
When this happens I go in to my messages to type a text and all contacts' names disappear and only numbers show up. If I attempt to click on a text the text will not show up and the screen is just black. It will either take more than 3 minutes for the text to load, or it will not load at all. So I have to shut it down in order for it to work properly again.
My phone has not been rooted, I have not downloaded very many applications, maybe just 5. I haven't even used it to browse because I'm afraid I would have to turn it off and just reboot the whole thing. Does anyone have an idea what is wrong?
You better go get a new one.
use a task killer, maybe it would help you, It worked for me

[Q] Random strange things happening

Ok so I want to convey all the relevant information without this being a mile long.
I have a o2 UK SGS2 running on a 3 sim. I have flashed on Lite'ing 6.1 with ninphetmaine 2.0.5. Up until the following, everything has been 100%.
This morning I downloaded Destinia and played it for a while. Before quitting I took a quick look at in app purchases to see if they charge ridiculous prices (they do). I'm not interested so I quickly spam back to close everything. This is when **** ****s up. OS becomes unresponsive immediately and I have no choice but to pull the battery. (power menu disappears instantly, no registered actions from soft keys or menu button in OS). No change on reboot.
I try reflashing Lite'ning. Mostly no change but I got the chance to get into task manager and uninstall Destinia/Launcher Pro.
I reinstall launcher pro, and now it works most of the time except:
1. Quite frequently the voice action app will load itself, and the unlock notification will pop up.
2. MTP notification will appear occasionally and phone will act like it's plugged in
3. Random Launcher/OS crashes. Sometimes screen on but no response from apps or OS. Sometimes screen won't turn on at all, just softkeys and darkness.
4. at first unlock after boot, camera makes standard focusing sound.
5. on boot, little popup dialog will read "in app purchases not supported in this version of android".
Really I doubt there's going to be any solution other than "wipe and reflash" but I'm really interested if anyone knows what would cause all these problems.
Cheers
. I'm not interested so I quickly spam back to close everything
Whatever that means looks to be the source of your problem..

what this means is that pressed back from the game's in app purchases screen, back to the main menu and then back to the Launcher, I'm sure everyone has done basically this countless times.
Fine but my dictionary defines spam as a different meaning .
But as posted that's where it all went wrong for whatever reason .
jje
Right I wipe-flashed stock 2.3.5 and it's STILL doing this. Voice actions popping up at random, all sorts of apps crashing and hanging all the time.
This has to be a hardware problem now, right?
just a stab in the dark but run a virus check.
I've never had a virus in my life, but I checked anyway and nothing.
Right so I've been watching my phone today. It's still doing random voice action popups. If I leave the phone on standard standby it will be fine for a while. It will then randomly turn on the screen by itself. The screen will stay on, if i leave it long enough the whole thing become totally unresponsive. If I press power the phone will wait a few seconds, then restart. If I don't touch it, it will just restart on its own eventually.
Can anyone recommend at least, some logging software that will let me look at the underlying OS and see what's happening when this is going on.
Is there any possibility your phone also goes to car-mode by itself?
spare parts app??
Your phone is more or less doing the same thing as mine is. It's a hardware issue from the seems of it. The voice command thing is from a dirty pin in the USB connector part which apparently isn't that hard to clean, for users in the thread below it actually helped to solve the issue. But my persisting issue is the unresponsive screen and power button causing an active screen to dim out and making the screen unresponsive..

Im getting random voice talk and mtp etc. phone is all ovr the place. flashed litening and nimphet last week and seemed fine. used mhl hdmi cable and problems seemed to start from there.

Read your thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1278790 and your problems are down to the letter the same. I've resigned myself to it being a hardware fault and put in a service request with samsung. Wish I had better news.
Yea me too. My issue is that my SGSII was manufactured in UK so I'm at odds seeing as how I'm in America. The people at the Samsung call center referred me to the UK number so I guess I will have to bits the bullet.

[Q] Slow Galaxy s3 Performance

Tried searching around for this but hopefully someone can help.
I've got an S3 running stock 4.0.4 firmware. I'm having 2 very frustrating issues with this phone:
1) At first I thought this was a Swiftkey issue but happens with stock keyboard. when i go into the messaging app occasionally, when pressing keys on the keyboard - nothing appears. I have to quit messaging app and go back in.
2) another very annoying issue is when in the phone book and pressing the green phone button to dial someone, sometimes it will take 10 seconds for the phone to make a call. If i happen to press it more than once during that 10 seconds, it will make the call, and say for example the other person has picked it up, the dialler will then place another call - to the same person! The other person tends to say - "why are you putting me on hold and calling me again!?"
Very annoying and not sure what to do. Really do not want to do a restore.

The least invasive solution will be to clear the cache for the all the apps affected and reboot.
Or just wipe cache from recovery and see where it goes.

Same issues that I'm facing
I'm also facing the same issue.... Long black screen pause when exiting or moving from one app to other. Very very frustrating ....
Tried all the trick in world including those that mentioned below.... Will be returning the device and going for a iPhone 5 !
Same exact issue, any results?

I am having the exact same issue with my S3. Sometimes calls take up to two minutes before they register. The phone remains completely responsive the whole time, and I can try to dial a bunch of different numbers (doesn't matter if I dial a number directly or if I quick dial a favorite or whatever). Suddenly, two minutes later it appears to register that, "Oh, I'm a phone!" and then dials all of the numbers all at once. Two minutes is a very long time to wait for the damn thing to dial. Especially when some iPhone user is sitting next to me going, "Seriously? You put up with that?" It is embarrassing.
I am also on the stock android 4.0.4 (verizon) and I would really really rather not have to wipe it clean and re-install.
The rest of the phone is fast (I am using go launcher) with the exception of the "Negative Colors" widget and the "Assistive light" widget. Both of those act just like the dialer. I hit the widgets and sometimes nothing happens for a minute. Again, the phone is completely responsive the whole time and I can hit these buttons over and over. Suddenly it all registers and then my screen flashes between normal and negative about a hundred times (once for each time I hit the button in frustration), and the led flash strobes on and off (again, once for each time I tried to get it to work).
This does not happen every single time though. Sometimes it behaves properly. Other times, it is super slow, but once it reacts, then I can make calls quickly until I let it sit untouched for a while. Then it gets all slow again.
I thought I'd try flushing the cache, but I cannot seem to find what cache I should flush. I can't find a dialer app, and the only other app that looks appropriate is the Dialer Storage app, but it does not have a cache I can flush.
Can anyone point me to a diagnostic tool that I can use to determine just what the phone is doing at this time? I have tried emailing myself the logs using log viewer, but they are huge and I can't seem to find anything there that I can sink my teeth into. Any help would be appreciated. My iPhone owning friends are becoming insufferable.

Thanks for the quick reply. I didn't know what a ril was and did a little research. Fascinating.
As far as I can tell, and please bear with me since I am a complete noob here (though I am resonably facile with Linux), since I am running the original ROM, I don't have any influence over the RIL. Is that correct? I downloaded getril, but it says that my device (Verizon GS3) is not supported.
What is the text that would show up in a log if I made a call? I'm going to try and search the logs again, maybe that will tell me something,

[Q] Couple Amaze Problems

Howdy! I peruse the forums quite a bit to figure out little fixes for my phone, but there are a couple problems that I haven't quite been able to find proper solutions for.
The first problem deals with the phone randomly shutting down (usually only when it's in my pocket). I've seen other posts regarding the topic, but the OPs usually stated that simply holding the power button would effectively turn the phone back on, or that the phone doesn't shutdown but rather reboots. My phone completely shuts down and requires that I take the battery out, wait 10-15 seconds, put it back in, and then hold the power button for an extended period of time in order for the phone to start up. The battery doesn't get extremely hot. It's usually around ~33-35C when it does this, but when I look at some of the other posts with similar problems, their batteries are ranging withing ~38-42C. I have seen that it may be a faulty battery, as shown in the other posts, but as I mentioned my problem is slightly different.
The second problem deals with streaming videos on browsers. Before the ICS update, I was able to stream videos on any browser, but after that OTA update I cannot. I have tried multiple browsers, including Dolphin, Firefox (my main browser), and Opera. I heard it may have to do with flash not supporting android anymore (after 4.0.x, whereas I'm only running 4.0.3), but I have checked my phone and I have Flash 11.1 already installed. The settings on my browsers are to enable plug-ins on tap (means that I would tap a video to start it, right?).
Lastly, as of now, I'm having a WiFi issue. It's not so much of an issue as a hindrance, though. Basically, I'm pretty much always in a WiFi zone, either being at home or on campus. When I get home from uni, WiFi automatically connects, no problem. When I'm at the uni, it will connect as soon as I get on campus, but when I walk from building to building, it loses connection and makes me reconnect. I go to hit reconnect, and it demands some credential password which I have never set. If I hit forget so that I can forget and reconnect to the network, it wants me to put in my screen unlock pattern. I draw the pattern to unlock it, but then it sort of refreshes and my pattern is gone and it doesn't let me continue with the process, so I have to go back to the home screen, back into settings, and clear credentials. Some posts said to continue to input incorrect passwords to allow a credential storage password reset, but that did not work. Some posts said to clear credentials, so I do that, but then I have to continuously type my login information whenever I move from class to class, which gets pretty irritating. The only way to connect to the WiFi is by disabling and reenabling the WiFi. Like I said, it's not a huge issue, rather a hindrance.
As for my phone specs, I'm not really a super tech so I haven't messed with anything. The phone is not rooted and is running Android 4.0.3. It is, however, unlocked, and I'm running it on ATT's network if that makes a difference.
Let me know if I've posted in the wrong section or anything, and if I have, I apologize. I'm not one for posting on forums, rather one to creep around and hopefully find solutions.
Thanks for your time.
Hi there.
I also want to join this topic:
1. my HTC amaze also shuts down randomly.
2. but the main thing is: can anybody help me with this WiFi issue? I can connect and use WiFi in the street, at McDonald's, at different places with public WiFi, but when it comes to connect to WiFi at my home or at other places where the WiFi is PASSWORD PROTECTED, my phone jams the network and i have to turn off WiFi on the phone and restart the WiFi router to have everything working again.
Somebody, please help
thanks in advance.

Since you are stock, the only thing being that your phone is unlocked, I would say this is either a config issue or a HW issue. The simplest thing to do is to clean the battery contacts, as there is a small chance that something got on them and is causing the battery to drop out. You can also look at the battery meter in the settings menu and see if you have a sudden drop in battery power or if it entirely cuts out. May give some clues to what's going on. Finally the only other thing I can think of is to uninstall any apps that save power or mess with the power settings on the phone.

Streaming video doesn't work for me, it will for a couple seconds and then die. So now I just open all links in the youtube app, which isn't perfect but it's good enough.

The only way to connect to the WiFi is by disabling and reenabling the WiFi. Like I said, it's not a huge issue, rather a hindrance.

This has got to be either a config issue or a bug in how your phone handles your uni's wifi. Your uni will have multiple wifi APs with the same SSID (but on different channels) so that you can walk around and still remain connected. My guess is that there is a bug in the wifi drivers that don't like what your uni is doing, but it's really hard to say since that stuff is generally pretty complicated...
If you can't get your power issue fixed easily I would recommend you factory reset your phone. Don't install any apps for a couple days and see if your problems persist. If the power one does then take your phone in for warranty repair. The wifi one could be a bug, which would mean a warranty repair isn't going to do anything for that so you may be screwed on that one. Unless you want to hack your phone and load a new ROM; there is a slim chance that an updated ROM will not have the same bug.

Thank you very much for the in depth reply. I'll take a look at the battery connections some time tomorrow as it's pretty late today. Do you have any recommendations as what to clean them with? I heard erasers are pretty good cause they have the "stickiness" to pick up grime, but wouldn't the rubber inhibit connectability?
The video thing isn't too big of an issue, but eh, a fix would be nice. If there's nothing that's known of atm, that is fine as well.
As for the WiFi, I didn't know if it was a bug or something I could fix internally. It's good to know, though, that it's not something I seem to have messed up myself haha.
Once again, I greatly appreciate the response!

The contacts won't be corroded because they are gold, however it could be either they aren't springy (ie they got bent) or that something is stuck on them. Just take a look, make sure they look fine and that they are making a good connection. It's most likely not the issue but you just want to rule that out, as it would obviously cause problems if your battery was being disconnected
So, as an update, I managed to fix the battery issue by actually turning my phone around in my pocket (Strangely enough, I found that if I keep the screen away from the leg and the power button facing up, rather than the screen towards my leg, the phone does not turn off.). All that's left is to find a fix for the video and WiFi. The WiFi problem has actually started to become more significant, as WiFi is no longer automatically connecting to my home internet anymore. Sometimes at uni, as well, the phone requires a complete reboot before it will reconnect rather than a WiFi off -> WiFi on reset. Any more input would be greatly appreciated ^.^
I had same restart Issue
I don't know why or how it works.
Just put a piece of paper below the battery and the restart problem is solved
Flash a kernel and see maybe the modules are messed up

I don't know why changing how the phone is situated in your pocket would solve the issue unless you were somehow unknowingly keeping the power button pressed down for long periods of time.
I will say I had the same issue and my suspicions lead me to the battery. Indeed, I bought a new battery and the issue has been resolved. There must have been some sort of short or default in the battery I was using that would cause my phone to randomly shut down or reboot..
