[Q] Installation custom ROM help - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi guys,
Yesterday I did some research on which custom ROM to install (I need to get my android version from 2.1 to 2.2 or higher). Various topics about custom ROMS are available here but the instructions aren't always as clear for a newbie.
Fyi: I got a HTC Hero.
In another topic I read this:
Wipe
Flash ROM
Don't reboot
Flash kernel
Reboot

So firstly I'll make a backup of my contacts and of my contents of the phone, I guess?
How do I flash the current ROM?
Why is not rebooting a pointer? Is it that dangerous?
I have no idea what flashing the kernel is, or how I should do this.
And last, I think I know how to reboot, hopefully.
Furthermore, after downloading the custom ROM I want, I put it on my SD card or something I guess?
Thanks for the help guys!

Little update: downloaded ClockworkMod and tried to instal, but I already got an error. Failed to extract or something like that.

Well install cwm for your device
You can reboot by pulling out your own battery and put it back on
Flashing rom means flashing the whole os
Flashing the kernel means just flashing a part os
Both have similar installation procedures
YA YOU NEED TO COPY THE ZIPS TO SD
BE sure to flash a rom that's meant for your device (important)

Some very basic ROM questions. Could not find an answer for 24hrs of searching!

Hello everyone,
I'm just about to go out of my mind, haha. I've successfully rooted my phone and I am interested in installing a new, custom ROM. However, I want to be 100% sure that I am not leading myself into the path of bricking. I have a couple questions that I think are basic enough, but haven't found an answer to anywhere online.
1.) Do I need a specific kernel and/or firmware in order to install a custom ROM?
2.) These are my specs for my phone
Android 2.3.3
Baseband: I9100DXKI1
Kernel: I9100DXKI2
Looking at my specs, will I be able to install this rom: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1198334 ?
Will any other ROM work for my phone? Now that it is rooted, am I freely able to install any ROM using clockworkmod or odin without having to change the kernels?
I'm very new to this and I'm hoping somoone can help me out with this.
Thanks a ton in advance!
Just rooting is not enough to install custom rom. You need to install clockworkmod recovery either through rom manager or flash a custom kernel which has CWM.
You can flash any kernel compatible with your device (for example, you cannot flash I9100G kernel/firmware on I9100 model).
You can get a lot of information here at xda. All the developers here are very friendly and co-operative.
You're good to go. Backup apps and some data using Titanium backup and/or My Backup Pro or something like those. Then boot into recovery, make a nandroid backup (can be found in the recovery menu), and flash the rom of your choice. You can flash any rom you like, just don't forget to wipe! This is also an option in recovery, wipe data/factory reset. You can also wipe dalvik-cache (found under 'advanced'). Have fun flashing!
Thanks for filling me in guys. I do have CWM installed on the phone, so I'll back up and try to flash. We'll see if I don't brick the phone somehow, haha.

Well obviously you wont, all you can do with flashing a wrong rom is getting boot loop, you can always restore your previous rom via nandroid backup. Happy flashing

What should do next after failing installing ROM's and having boot loops problems

Im tired of installing many ROM's and 2 different Recovery, some "cant open .zip" and having boot problems, and in other recovery, it can install roms, but other aslo cant open .zip, and also having boot problems,
Im really tired of reflashing stock ICS Fw then root, install Recovery again, after failing installing ROMs.. its too long to reflash, root, install recovery,, its waste my time and having headache after failing installing ROMs for almost a week
Is there any fast solution or what would you do after you fail installing ROMs and cant boot? even do you can enter recovery? what proper should do next? would you also reflash again stock ICS then root and install recovery?
or any other fast way solution..
Please help
Root and install recovery onto your device. Enter recovery and make a nandroid back up of your device. Flash your new rom and reboot the device. If you boot loop or the rom doesn't work or even if you just don't like it, enter recovery (may have to remove the battery to restart a boot cycle) and use your nandroid back up to restore your device.
Before flashing the new rom, you should make sure that the kernel is compatible with the one that is already on your device. If it isn't compatible, you will also want to flash the new kernel using fastboot/flashtool, and not recovery. Also make sure you have a back up of your rom's current kernel so you can flash the original kernel, if you decide to go backwards.

Thanks I think that what im looking for.. the Nandriod backup..
gota way to find that now and how to install
Thanks a lot!
Hmmm...the most easiest way it to unlock your bootloader first...then flash custom kernel...this can help you skip rooting and installing recovery again and again if something goes wrong cause all custom kernel is pre-rooted and got recovery by default....
next you need to find which custom roms you want to flash...some custom roms have their own kernel or flash any custom kernel that is compatible with the roms....
remember, custom kernel is important cause if you flash the wrong kernel, you might get bootloop after flashing the roms....

Help with rooting and installing custom rom

Hey everyone,
i've got an i9300 device with 4.1.1 (XXDLIH) on it
I wanted to installed a custom rom on it (Omega ROM v38)
First i flashed CWM via Odin like in the instructions, after that i downloaded the rom put it in the sd card and booted the phone into CWM, i did the wipe and factory reset and choosed the rom zip for installing
After about 10 minutes the phone rebooted, but it is still on stock rom, so i thought what could the problem be and remembered that i need to root the phone first.
Now i have the problem that i can't (don't know), i don't know which way i should use for rooting so that i can afterwards install the Omega Custom rom ....
Note that i have now the CWM 5.5 recovery and don't know how to get back to stock recovery ...
Please if someone could tell me exactly what should i do, how exactly to root it and install the rom :/
Thanks everyone in advance
If you think that it would be better to install another custom rom then feel free to tell me

[Q] CM 11 EXPERIMENTAL NiGHTLY - Error status 7

------------- SOLVED! --------------
Hello all,
First of all I want to say I'm pretty new to flashing ROMs etc.
Currently I'm at stock 4.3 Jellybean and I want to flash my SGS3 to the new CM 11 ROM.
I rooted my phone following this tutorial: vvvvvv.telefoonrooten.nl/samsung/samsung-galaxy-s3-root/ (sorry if its in Dutch, but it uses the CF-Root-SGS3-v6.3 and Odin).
After I rooted I copied both the CM11 ROM and GAPPS to my external SD, I went to recovery and tried to install the new custom ROM but I got an error (status 7) and it was aborted.
Also if I try to reboot it won't boot normally as it should be but it goes back to recovery mode automatically...
I fixed to get back to Jellybean by flashing the stock rom (unrooting?) it via Odin.
Anyone else got the exact same problem as I do and knows a solution to be able to flash CM 11?
Thanks in advance,
Steelbear

please read the thirst post in a rom/kernel/whatever thread. and maybe if you havent done it already you should also read the stickies in general section.
FAQ (Read before post !!)
- If you obtain Error 7 when you tried to install ROM in CWM or TWRP
Install the latest version of CMW or TWRP

BTW latest philz touch recovery works too
Since you went back to stock and you already know how to root, I suggest you go to Play Store and download ROM Manager to help you install latest CWM recovery on your device.
Or you can simply go to CWM website, pick the version of the recovery for your phone and flash it via Odin.
Hope it helps.

Indeed it worked! I found it out myself yesterday. Went to the CWM site and downloaded the latest version (6.0.4.4.) and flashed it through Odin. But thanks for your input anyways (to all who replied) !
An alternative solution that I often use is to open the Updater Script in META-INF folder in the ROM's zip and delete first lines, where it gets device model as property.
Obviously it's an UNSAFE operation (because that lines avoid to install ROMs of other phone on mine) but when I'm sure that ROM I've downloaded is for my phone I do it and it works

I'm on Android 4.1.2 rooted and with Philz CWM Touch recovery.. Now?

Hello everybody, as the title says, I currently have this configuration. My father's phone always reports memory is full and I decided to upgrade the phone to a different ROM, possibly one which is light. Anyway I found different threads about IsoRec recovery but I didn't understood what are we talking about. Also, I was not able to understand what to do and which files to flash, even if, just for an example, I wish to flash latest CM13. I think that an old recovery which supports Android 4.1.2 doesn't support Android 6.0 to be flashed via zip, so I would probably mess up something. So, what should I do? Flash something with ODIN via PC? Or there's something I can do directly from the phone to update recovery and then flash the ROM's zip? Thank you!
Hi,
You can follow the instructions here to install CM12.1 first:
Download cm-12.1-XXXXXXXX-UNOFFICIAL-i9100.zip to your sdcard
Make sure you're using a Kitkat Compatible Recovery
Boot into Recovery
Wipe all your data
Flash cm-12-.1XXXXXXXX-UNOFFICIAL-i9100.zip from sdcard
(Optional)Flash Google Apps.zip from sdcard
Reboot

Click to collapse
Once installed, follow this guide to upgrade to CM13:
