[Q] Installing TWRP on Unrooted Note - AT&T Samsung Galaxy Note I717

How can I install TWRP on my unrooted Note? and Which is the easiest way to install it?
Searching through the forums I haven't found any specific instructions but if I've read correctly it seems that through ODIN is the easiest way.
Where can I get the latest ODIN for the Note i717?
Could someone be so kind to provide some instructions and links?
Any help will be greatly appreciated.
Thanks.

You don't need to be rooted to flash a rom or install a recovery. Root is for access to the system files of the rom after it boots and loads.

How can I install a recovery without having to root my phone first? What's the procedure
All the instructions I've found require the Note to rooted first.

Rom already on sdcard.
Recovery tar in Odin.
Flash recovery with Odin
Boot into new recovery and flash rom.
Rom will be rooted once booted.
Bingo, the EASIEST way th go from bones stock to custom rom.

thanks for this , man..my wife's Note was never rooted, and she wants it done, so I will try this way..
sounds waaaaay too easy though!

I didn't mention that that this method will trip the flash counter
As I don't give one care about what my flash counter says unless I get a hardware defect within my year of ownership I didn't mention that before.
There are ways to reset it so don't even worry about until the day comes where you need to.

And just where do we find the TWRP. tar...... That we flash with Odin.....
All I see is how to Install TWRP using
GOO MANAGER..... And that requires root..
Which the OP doesn't want to do....
Thanks...

flash the CWM tar first, and after you go through all the other steps, and are rooted, download and install TWRP..

Like the above poster said, but skip the root step. So CWR using Odin and occasionally, then TWRP by using CWR, done.

Ok..... So we need the CWR.tar, for Odin...
Any links please?
Then.... We need the TWRP file to put on our SD...
Any link to the TWRP too please?
Thanks for all your help...
In keeping the OP's note un-rooted...

See the super everything thread. The tar file is there. The TWRP zip is in the original development thread.

Hey guys. Thanks for the responses.
I see that some of you are recommending to odin CWR and then use CWR to flash TWRP.
On the TWRP page there is this link to the following page http://goo.im/devs/OpenRecovery/sgh-i717/ which has the different TWRP files and there is a TWRP .tar file. File name: openrecovery-twrp-2.3.2.3-quincyatt.img.tar
Can I just odin the above file instead of odin CWR first?
Where can I find the latest ODIN? I've looked for downloads but haven't found it. A link would be much appreciated.
Once again, thanks.

good question.....
coul;dnt he just Odin the TWRP .tar alone??
And skip the Odin CWR all together??
PS... Thanks for the direct Link to the Latest Odin!!!!

Yup
As long as its a .tar and contains a recovery.img whichever you choose is just that, your choice.

[Q]CwM Recovery Won't Stick!!

I am having an issue with flashing CWM via Odin and keeping it there. I flash CWM via ODIN, I've tried 3 diff versions of CWM , Red One, Voodoo (blue one) and the 3.0.0.8 via rom manager (orange one) each time i flash one, i can boot into after flashing it via ODIN, but when i reboot the phone. CWM is gone and its back to the factory samsung recover "for all devices" nonsense. I have been able to obtain root by flashing via the SU zip method and I have root, i just can't flash a rom b/c cwm wont stick....any ideas? search returns nothing!
Thats because you need a modified kernal for cwm to stick.
Here is the modified stock kernal for a froyo rom. put this in the pda function of odin.

did you odin a cwm recovery after the modified stock kernal?
Make sure your battery is removed when entering download mode to flash cwm via odin.
Once it shows successful, remove the cable.
insert battery and immediately enter cwm using the 3 finger method.
Flash a custom stock kernel.
choose "reboot system now"
let the system boot up.
then boot back to cwm recovery and flash your rom of choice.

Yes, I have done it through Kies and when I try to go to recovery the phone go into a loop.
Sounds like you used kies to upgrade to official ics? Why would you need to get into stock recovery? What button combo are you using?

K. Sounds like you're gonna have to flash a recovery through Odin. If you're worried about the flash counter then I would flash cwm through Odin, flash counter reset and stock recovery in cwm. If you're not concerned about the counter, then just leave that part out.
Thanks for the help. I'll do it as soon I get home.

When you hit the PDA box it doesn't bring up the tar file? It can't be a zip. Make sure you have the correct cwm file on your PC. Make sure you download the Odin file. I prefer the touch version myself.

The PDA slot in Odin will only see specific types of files. In this case, it needs to be a tar file. Go to the link above and download the Odin file for cwm touch.

[Q] Is there a CWM flashable file to get back TWRP?

I was only wondering if this was available since we can't flash recovery images on the opposite recovery. I have made a recovery image in TWRP but have not gone so far to not just flash CWM and make a recovery image that will serve as my new point zero. Just curious since I only saw flashable CWM.

the link you gave to TWRP recovery was exactly what i was looking for. In the TWRP website they have a flashable option for TWRP to use in whatever existing recovery you have, that is CWM for us. Under droidstyle's guide (there's the thread also in dev section too for CWM) there is also a link for flashable CWM so now im set.
Although you already found what you were looking for, you can also download/run the goo manager app, press menu->install open recovery script. That will install TWRP.

I was hoping this way would let me get out but Ive now lost any custom recovery while in paranoid android. So what i did was while in Jelly Beans rom is flash CWM recovery to then flash Paranoid. I then decided to go back to beans, and i tried to flash TWRP zip that i has to restore my recovery. That failed an i have no recovery. I only have android system recovery <3e>. I am currently trying the goo manager to get me back, but so far i dont think im doing it right ill keep trying.
...So with goo manager i cant flash back to beans, i cant flash CWM back on, and ive: installed open recovery script to to install the TWRP img file but it must not have worked, but i cant see anything to indicate not.
Ok so im am stuck with just the stock recovery. In goo manager it says the recovery was installed but if is reboot to recovery its just crappy old boring stock and if i try to flash anything from goo manager it just reboots to that same stock recovery. Anyone know how to get a custom recovery back?

The TWRP in goo manager is not the correct one for our phone. I did the same thing and ended up in the same position as you. I used the suckitverizon file from Adams thread and odined it back on to the phone. If was in that position now I would use the newly released tool kit.
Good luck.

Im downloading the toolkit now but in the meantime did you have to restart the whole process in the 3 step bootloader unlock or did you just start at flashing suckitverizon version 2 in odin? Im just wondering how safe that is.

No I did not have to start over. If I recall correctly, I put the suckit file in the pda box and hit start. You can read up on it in Adams main thread and I know there were a few other people in the same fix.
Good luck
Toolkit saved my bacon. Many lessons learned. so if i want to restore an image in twrp say from paranoid then i use cwn to flash to a rom that plays nice with twrp then flash twrp back then recover in twrp. Now if i get stuck the toolkit has the correct twrp and cwm for the verizon note ii.
spoke too soon i though at least getting cwm was all good. However the toolkit wont install TWRP which is what i have my backups made on. i followed all the step on screen and selected sch-i605 to be flashed in odin. I can only reboot into stock recovery afterwards. :crying:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2051992 This has been asked (by me) and answered (by awesome folks with more sense than me).
ok it all over. CWM can be had by flashing zip in twrp or through tool kit. twrp i only regained by odining again the suckitverizon from Adam's unlockbootloader thread.

[Q] AAccount's Diamond Rom 4.4.4 installation on p4

Hey,
As i don't have enough posts i have to make thread in to this silly Q&A board.
1. I have completely stock p4 (p7500) tablet with 4.0.4 android. I am wondering
is it possible to install he's/her's rom directly without rooting or do i have to
flash some other recovery with Odin before i can install recommended TWRP
recovery.
2. As the tablet is completely stock i haven't rooted it, but as with all tablet tutorials
they always flash some recovery with Odin before rooting. With stock recovery
i get these errors.
"Unknown volume path for /sdcard" so i simply can't install recovery from original named zip file.
Mr. google doesn't really help with the subject
When trying to
<code>
adb push twrp.zip /sdcard/update.zip
</code>
It simply says that action is denied, probably because i haven't rooted the tablet.
Instructions on dev forum http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2777161
are quite short and doesn't say anything about coming from stock rom/recovery.
So is it possible to do this straight from stock recovery or do i have to pull some
fancypancies before i can use desired recovery / rom.
Waiting for reply.

Pottumaa

First flash custom recovery(twrp) with odin. Then using your custom recovery flash your root.zip or whatever the rooting zip file is named. That will get your tab rooted. But you should be able to install your custom rom with just the custom recovery installed as the rom is already rooted.

So really only way is to flash custom recovery with Odin. After that rooting is kind of useless,
most rom installation scripts have root access or superuser integrated.
And no developer doesn't provide recovery that is flashable via odin so that's why i was asking
if it is even possible to do from stock recovery.
Any experience of using heimdall with p4?

Finally straight answer. Yes, very happy.
Just for the record they can be flashed through stock recovery. Little harder than expected, but possible.
When mounted you can get to root folder and simply rename your zip file to update.zip and place it
in to /sdcard/ directory. In my case internal storage of the phone was found at /mnt/sdcard/.
Should also work if update.zip is placed in to /cache/ directory of the phone.

it is odin Flashable.

use odin 3.10.6 but i believe 3.10.0 will work also
put the file in the AP slot and flash
you will most likely lose root but here it is any way

I have to question the title of this thread though. This is NOT flashable in recovery. It's the zip file that must be unzipped on a PC and then Odin the tar file. It's the original one from Sammobile.
The OP gives correct instructions, I just think the word flashable is bound to confuse someone.

You are correct. It's probably just my hesitation to using the word flashable and odin at the same time. I've lost count of how many users see a zip and think "I'll flash this"

Yes. Once flashed don't reboot. Pull the battery and go back into download mode and flash twrp. Img in the ap slot
You can find the file at Moars op under recovery and odin
