Consolidating my previous post, here are two simple, modified blur sms apks. we have:
a) Messagingwhite.apk: same as stock, except grey text in conversation list is white rather than transparent/grey. easier to read i think
b) Messagingicsblack.apk: the background of both read and unread texts is black, with unread text being displayed in ICS blue while read texts are in white. black background looks better with the ICS text
For both, the incoming sms box in actual conversations has been darkened. just my fancy.
Next step; blackout the background of conversation list entirely. pretty sure that'll entail diving into the framework. I know its done routinely, but im learning by experimentation as i go (more fun that way!).
Instructions:
1) Must be rooted
2) Download desired Messaging______.apk
3) Rename to Messaging.apk
4) With a file explorer or via adb, navigate to /system/app/ and copy your current Messaging.apk and corresponding odex file (if you're rom is odexed) to somewhere safe (just for a backup) and then delete them from /system/app/
5) Move the renamed Messaging.apk to /system/app/, change permissions to rw-r--r--, and reboot.
And thats it! The changes aren't big, but unlike my attempts yesterday, I think they're much more aesthetically pleasing. Particularly the one with ICS color incorporated.
Hope you enjoy! If you like hit the thanks!

im about to go watch the dark knight rises, but afterwards i'll start messing with it! it will depend on if the app draws from a specific line of code that gives a hex value, or from a .png inside the framework-res.apk. if its the latter, the rom needs to be deodexed and to be universal id have to learn how to make it a flashable zip blah blah blah. BUT if its the former, shouldn't really be that hard.
edit: yes first attempt was a big giant fail. pretty sure contacts.apk and phone.apk are intertwined in some way, I can't even decompile and recompile contacts.apk without errors when i haven't changed a single thing. and theres some images in contacts.apk that only appear in the phone app. so yea. but ill take a stab at it! just might be beyond my grasp atm

I'm actually a fan of the white, but I'll look into it. Ideally I want to figure out how to make a flashable zip that will black out framework/some selected apps, but I'm not anywhere near that yet. Got my rom of choice (batakang) deodexed, but i can't even change the gradient background to black without problems. Should be a simple edit. Still much to learn obviously!
I have to get a lot of research done in the next week, hoping to get a paper published in the next 6 months, but as soon as Christmas break rolls around, this will be my pet project until grad school starts up again
Right now doing the contacts app is my priority, just figured out a key step that I was missing. still getting mad errors but making progress!

No donations necessary. I've gotten a lot from the android community and am just trying to give back since there isn't much dev support for the razr hd.
So far, contacts and phone are not looking good. I've tried all possible routes; most of the time the modded apk won't even compile and when it does, it isn't recognized upon boot. Best I've gotten is the phone to recognize it, but when the phone app is opened it's just all FC all the time. System apps are a tricky *****.
That being said, the messaging app I have pretty solid control over and can alter most of those colors, baring the background. That's tied into framework, which I was able to get blacked out! I can explain the process (moderately difficult) or more likely I'll look into making a flashable zip. So with that in mind, if anyone would like some basic color altering to their sms, I can prolly do so with the limitation that the background is the JB gradient or black. Texts, contact names, text box backgrounds (not the main background!) and such can be changed.
I'm giving up on contacts for now, unless I can find/think of a new way to get it working. phone is tied directly into it to, so that sucks. I can look at the calendar, but since its third party now (on g play where it'll get updates vs the built in one, which I deleted), I have to imagine someone's done that already. If anyone has any requests ill look into it, I'm not sure what other apps there are that someone else hasn't put a theme to that can't be put on our phones.
What I think I'm gonna do is look into how to get aosp apps working, contacts was on some rom on rzr forums but I couldn't get it on my rom (batakang). Maybe if I decompile it and recompile it with my framework...

I am now using the awesome all black mod and was wondering how hard would it be to "all black" the gmail and gtalk apps to match. Black background and white/grey text perhaps. I would think in my case this would save a lot on battery as well as I check email frequently.
I would love this as well though I am just a user, not a programmer or the like. However I don't think this would be too hard. It could be as simple as implementing maybe a high contrast which pretty much almost flips the colors. No idea though
If their layouts, styles, etc are defined in accessible XML files it could probably be done.
yeah add me! this would be an awesome mod. can totally see 2+ days with something like this.
Anyone able to actually do this I poked around some and was unable to make it work.
I'll take a look...
That would be awesome. If you would be willling to share your findings that would be icing on the cake as I would love to learn how to do this myself.I tired to change the background colors by changing color values in the chat_view.xml but that seemed to have no effect. I am sure its just a matter of changing color values in a few key xml files but just dont know where to look.
Thanks again

Thanks for the link but no that is not what I am looking for. What I want is for the background screen inside the apps to be black background with white text. The default for gmail and gtalk is a white background with black text on it.

Almost positive framework for google apps (gapps) is closed source and not to be modded or distributed. that is why CM got the cease and desist letter.
You could create a metamorph to do this but it would take quite a lot of hunting to find all the .xml files needed, as well as all the .png's used. The easy part would be editing the basic framework files. Editing all the apps you've installed is a whole new story.
Snoop around in framework.res and twframework.res if you like. That's what the AllBlack mm changes.
FYI, Cyanogen got a C&D for the _distribution_ of Google apps. I strongly doubt Google would care if you change the graphics of gapps for yourself, so long as you're not making the apps themselves available for download.

Hi,
Blacking out apps is a royal pain to do it right. I've been working on this for my newest (still unreleased) honeycomb theme, and its slow, and tedious. I can spend hours changing one color value, or one line of code, re-compiling, push to phone, test, only for it to not work properly, and then I have to undo the change, and start over.
https://picasaweb.google.com/113127051130934911253/HoneycombTheme?feat=directlink
Gmail for instance, uses XML layouts, colors coded into the java directly, and then custom CSS for the message view.
I've been tweaking and debugging for days, and still can't override enough of the font colors to black out the message view to a level I'm happy with.
Anyway, I've done gmail, gtalk, googlevoice (well, like 90%, can't blackout the setup process properly no matter how I try) AOSP 2.2 calendar (I hate touchwiz) CM6/AOSP Mms (just touchups), google quick-search-box, twitter 2.0.1, android market, and the ABSOLUTE worst of them all, google maps (only like 85-90%, I can't decompile the resources, so some parts will never be inverted properly.) And then there were also tweaks to Contacts, Browser, Beautiful widgets, Voodoo control app, and the frameworks themselves.
And I still need to blackout facebook, google reader, google books, and a few more.
I had planned on releasing eventually, but in order to blackout maps, the framework-res.apk has to invert every call for a "light" theme to "black" instead, so it WILL break other apps that use custom display styles, but rely on default android text colors (or vice-versa.) And of course, if anyone starts asking for a release-date, I'll likely just abandon it entirely. This was all done for my own personal enjoyment and use, not anyone else's.
Blah, sorry for sounding *****y, I'm tired of people causing drama in the android world, its supposed to be FUN, not high-school.
Cheers, =)

Not as nice looking throughout as s0niqu3's but looks alot better than the regular version.

To begin... make a backup 1st.... not responsible for damages while left in the parking garage.. enjoy the game!
This theme was made with permission of "thebowers". It's his creation. I brought it into GB land for the X2. I don't know if I did everything he did but I can tell you that I have made image edits galore for resizing purposes and to get all the new GB images not yet themed. I have also edited the crap out of a lot of xml's so things should work 100% smoothly out of the box. I have also incorporated some inverted apps which, I had nothing to do with. Credit there goes to thebowers, ecsnead and B-Boy. I themed the Phone and I started on the other 2 but, then, I saw someone else already did pretty much the same thing. So, I just used that. No need to waste time. That would be bouchigo. You can find him on rootzwiki. I also made a few apps myself because once I got going on 0.2.2, I got carried away.
Also, I changed the boot animation. It matches the theme oh so well. Credit there goes to Versatile1 because he made it.
Before we begin, I will list all the apps I have included. For ease of use, I highly recommend getting rid of any app on the list from your phones data folder first. For example, if you downloaded Facebook from the market, remove it from your data folder. Not saying you HAVE TO, just putting it out there if you run into issues, you know how to fix them.
Also for the market... this one you do HAVE to do... First, verify that you DO NOT have a vending app in \data\app!!!!! If you do this will not install!!! You will need to uninstall updates before flashing... Settings>Applications>Manage Applications>"ALL" tab>Market>Uninstall Updates
Will it break your phone if you don't do that? No, it just won't install a market... at all!
Lastly, I have taken the time to guide every .9.png file in the framework and in every app I touched. What this means to you.... If you want to make other changes, everything will decompile and recompile without error. Of course you need to add the dependencies if your editing systemui or settings but thats a blur thing. Not something I did.
Now.. onto the part anyone actually cares about..
The theme is located here.... No.. over there ----> ok its actually back there <------
If you see any issues or think of anything else to add let me know.
Here's whats included
framework
SystemUI
Calculator
Camera
Contacts
Dialer
Phone
Facebook (Inverted)
Gallery3D
Gmail (Inverted)
Google Quick Search (Inverted)
Keyboard (updated from 2.2 to be darker)
Settings (Inverted)
GTalk (Inverted)
Market (Inverted)
Google Voice (Inverted)
Some of these apps will be called dark or black in the app drawer. Example: Facebook = Dark Facebook

just open up the theme in 7zip and delete what you dont want.
No stone unturned... we had to do some smali edits on gmail to get it to work. looks good though. now i realize that is the screenshot that is missing.
I just extracted the apk and used root explorer to push it into system/app. Changed permissions, rebooted, and voila!

Good stuff man. I noticed a few small things that I thought I would share, nothing deal breaking or anything like that.
1.) I noticed when you're in the middle of unlocking the phone theres like a slight white bar in the unlock tab, this doesn't occur when you switch between silent and audible mode.
2.) When you're in a call and say if you're on speaker and drag down the notifications the call information is pretty hard to see maybe a lighter shade of black?
3.) Some of the press colors are still orange/blue.
4.) When downloading from a browser the status bar is blue opposed to red and you can't read what you're downloading (b on b issue).
Still one slick theme regardless! Thanks!
Very nice work xkape. Appreciate the quick turnaround for 0.4.
I noticed there is something unthemed in the blacked out gmail. When in your inbox an you check an email and click on the "labels" button that interface is not blacked out, it is black type on a white bg. When you scroll on this screen the entire screen blacks out and you cannot read your labels. Not a deal breaker by any means but I am just throwing it out there.
Sounds like the colorchachehint is ok (thats what makes it black when you scroll) but the bg and text need to be switched. I'll take a look at that.

1) Should be an easy fix
2) Just saw that. I tested to see if it was in frame or phone and im pretty sure I just missed it in the framework. I'll find it.
3) Theres just so many of the damn things. Hard to get em all.
4) Never used the stock browser before. I use Dolphin HD. So, this one probably won't get fixed.
I'm adding one... in the phone when you are looking at a specific number in recent. if you click on it for "call details" that screen needs fixed. I think Im also going to darken the text of the unselected tabs. I thought the grey I chose was darker than that.
And by the way.. thank you both for pointing those out to me. I can't fix the theme and make it better if I don't know it needs to be.
I use boat browser mini.
I did some investigationg into the ongoing black on black issue in the status bar. Each app sets that seperately. The only way to fix that would be to either a) make the whole things white again with black text or b) edit each app that points at a black color instead of a white one for text. I will edit it for phone app and for dolphin.
Nice theme, I haven't found anything I don't like. The boot animation is sweet too.
I've never been a fan of just black and white themes, but this looks very tasteful. I'll give this a shot after flashing Eclipse .4 later!
triton, I never was either. In fact, I had never even used BNB. But, I came to feel that colorized themes just didnt work for me anymore. So I decided Id use BNB and edit up to the X2.
Although, I must admit, I am a sucker for those neon themes in Blue or Red.

neon image i just made right quick.

thanks triton!
I've got a list from peoples feedback of a few imperfections here and there. I'll be fixing those real soon as well.
I ran into an issue with the app shortcuts on my home screen not moving to delete. They were frozen. I could add them to the homepage but couldn't delete. I flashed eclipse.4 and everything is working correctly now. I did install that speedy zip yesterday. Not sure if that was the issue or not. Would that be launcher issue or something in the theme zip?
Anyone have a Dark themed Google Voice? That would go with FunkenEclipse?

Okay, So I've been trying everything I can think of, have done alot of reading. Really could use some help here guys. If anyone can give me some pointers I would greatly appreciate it.
I DLed the Google Voice from the Market, put on my computer, unzipped it with 7zip.
Took the res folder (drawable-hdpi), and replaced all the .png files with updated green/black themed ones from that above post.
This is where I get lost. I try to rezip the package, tried it with every kind of compression.
Everytime I go to install it on my phone, it tells me.....
Parse error
There is a problem parsing the package.
Anyone got some pointers?
OK buddy, 1st off, I am assuming by dark voice, you mean black background with white text. If that assumption is true, theres a lot more work to be done than editing images.
However, if you are in fact just trying to change images and are familiar with 7zip, the process is pretty easy. Especially since you already edited your images.
Lets do it this way, since your progression will yield the right results...
grab your completely stock voice that you have.. open it (NOT UNZIP) it with 7zip... find your way to the proper folder(s) and move your edited images into.. yes, while still zipped. Once thats done, close 7zip. it will ask you about updating the archive.. say yes... you're done.
And if you are in fact looking for the black backgrounds with white text.. grab my BNB theme and pull the Voice out if it. Its inverted.

I havent thought about the TXT color... crap im not going to be able to read it after i update the PNGs......

Thanks for your help sir.
K, So I ended up pulling your Voice.apk from the BnB theme (which looks awesome btw... dunno how I missed that one)
I like it, but its just black and white. So I opened it with 7zip, go to res/drawable-hdpi and replace the file "widget_inbox_background.9.png"
That is the background for the widget.... only thing I care about..
I let it update the archive and save.
Copy the apk to my SD card and attempt to install it.
Everything looks great it appears to be installing then it gets to the end and says "Application not installed" done
I cannot get past this part..... am i doing something wrong?

K, so, the Voice.apk that is in your updatezip... system/app/voice.apk
how did you get this to work?
Is this your original inverted voice.apk? and then you just replaced the drawable-hdpi complete folder? or just the updated pngs? and thats it? Thats like the first thing i tried.... for like HOURS....
I just went through the apk.... looks like you just overwrote the pngs and 9pngs with the new gray/green ones.... man... you didnt have to mess with any xmls did you?
That just seems way to easy... I tried that like 10 times
Anyhow... thank you so much for your help man!
If the above is true, shouldn't I be able to do this same process with the new updated googlevoice from the market? and just update the pngs?
Don't know if I want to try it yet, but im really curious where I went wrong so it might be a good challenge...
I think I may of had a bad update.zip... I will try yours next with themed facebook
Theres an new GVoice? I guess I need to get to it.
For this, All I did was take Voice out of the BNB theme and opened it with 7zip. (NOT UNZIP)... then I opened (again, not unzip) you hdpi folder. I highlighted all the images and moved them all at once into the BNB hdpi folder. I then closed 7zip and yes to updating the archive. I stuck Voice.apk into a update.zip template and put it on the SD Card. I rebooted into recovery and installed the zip.
Ive never tried just sticking something in the system folder and hiting install. Not sure that would work.
Maybe just putting the apk in there, making sure the permissions are correct and then just rebooting would seem more like the solid option to me. I mean, technically, if its in your system folder it is installed.
I have tried UOT Kitchen before, always was unlucky at having flashing errors.
My question is this... If I take a flashable theme, with permission from the creator, I should be able to use the scripts that they include for flashing? I am savvy with un-APKing zipping, signing and what not, is that all I would have to do to recreate a theme using my own images?
Thanks to everyone here!
Yes, the script you see other themes using can be changed out with your own, as well as the content. You can also just use the UOT Kitchen script. Credit given where credit is due, of course, but the script itself (IMHO) is not something you really need permission for.
Another tip, this from firsthand experience, when you're zipping everything up getting ready to flash, make sure you're zipping the contents of the theme folder (/META-INF/ & /system/) vs zipping the theme folder.
It sounds really stupid, but it took me forever to figure out why everything I did in UOT Kitchen perfectly but everything I did, using the same damn script, just froze. But ya gotta learn somewhere, right?
Remember when using the kitchen make sure u click amend scripting in the area where u load the apks... x2 uses 2. Something recovery.. if u don't click that there will be errors everytime

Thank you, I think I've tried UOT 5 times but never had success.
Kevin, I tried the amend scripting, it solo didn't work.
I would much rather use my own images then those offered in uot kitchen.
I'm going to try to put a theme together this weekend, I haven't modded anything since BF2 wake island air show

Ok, how much do you know about themeing? Because if you are wanting to edit just the images(.pngs) you will need some info first...
You can "simply" take the framework-res.apk and systemUI.apk and go to the HDPI folder(or wherever the images are) and "drag n drop" to your desktop and edit those... OR you can take a .png that you wanna use(say one from another theme) and just drag n drop in the HDPI folder. And then, simply make a flashable .zip and your good to go.
.9s !!!
These are a PAIN if you dont know what you are doing.
If you are going to try and get into themeing, download APKManager and decompile the framework-res.apk ... go to a .9 image(i think its .png.9 or something of the like). When you load the image(say in GIMP) you will see black squares on the OUTSIDE of the image(like near the edges of the ACTUAL picture edge)... DONT TOUCH THOSE!!!! leave them there and make edits how you choose to the rest of the image. Once you are finished, just recompile(DONT SIGN AND YES! THESE ARE SYSTEM APPS!). Put in a flashable .zip and your set.
NOW Please note:
When you are doing the drag and drop method, make sure you are REPLACING an image and not ADDING more images.. catch the drift?
this is quick how to, hope it helps and good luck. let me know if you need anything else.
All the themes rock! I have poor eye sight (far sight) so my main concern always is status bar and the battery icon. I love being able to see the percentage, but some themes use smaller battery percentage text.
.9 seem like the stretchable area I'm beautiful widget... I understand that

I was thinking of trying out theming. That is until I looked at the crap load of images just thrown into one directory. lol. It may not be as hard as it looks but I havent looked any further than that yet. I still want to try something out though. Is there an easy way of figuring out what image does what on the phone? Like if I want to change some things, I have to know the name of the image. Well, to me, it looks like they aren't named plain and simple. Plus when they are just thrown into one directory its kinda hard to distinguish what is what. It was so much easier theming for webOS. lol
Js if u really look at the framework u will see all the images in the drawable hdpi folder are really a lot of the presses..tabs. status bar icons... over scroll glow theming takes a lot of time to build straight from scratch... any .9 PNG can be edited when it is decompiled in apk manager or apk multi tool just don't edit the black patch as peppermint said or u will not compile...

@js I know what you are saying about the desire to do it but the system isn't really what I would say themer friendly! Admittedly I am not the sharpest tool in the shade when it comes to some things (like the Android OS), so I would imagine that plays a big role in my intimidation of the whole thing.
What got me was the De-Compiling and Recompiling of everything just to change something. Not to mention the signatures and etc... perhaps one day someone will write a piece of software (be it windows based or Android in a shell on a PC) that will make it all pretty simple on that part. Till then I will prob. just enjoy and appreciate the work of others.

Yeah, I agree about the decompiling and recompiling thing. When I had a webOS phone I created my own theme just by simply replacing the images and restarting the phone. With android, it seems you have to take the whole framework out, theme it and recompile the package file and flash it to the phone. Just seems a bit overwhelming.

It's not that bad if you are just changing the images... Just timely. I suggest gimp to do the work. Another tip, some of the images are indexed. In gimp change from indexed to rgb...back to indexed, then rgb. Reason being that you are now able to add any color and doing it twice clears the pixelation...
What gets hard is smali editing and .xml editing. Let me know if you need help there.

Send a PM to "KTT16" on the Motorola Photon Forums, he is a great themer, let him know what you need help with, tell him you are running stock on the X2, he'll ask you for whatever files he needs, and he will help out.
By the way, if you are at all interested in a signature image, I can create one for you, just PM me, and I'll get on it.

Thanks I'll check it out

When you find a indexed image going to rgb pixelates the image...going back to indexed and then to rgb fixes this.

I am trying this out for the 1st time. My main goal is to create a transparent status bar for CM7. Will this make that "patch" I need for this?

Hey anyone out there good at themeing some things, got any ideas on what i (a TOTAL 100% Noob) would have to do to edit some of the things in sense 5? possibly create a theme?
I dont need like a super long drawn out tutorial on EVERYTHING id have to do, unless youd be so kind as to provide one.
Just general bits and pieces and ill put together something from a collab of information given here ive been thinking about making a theme for a while but TOTALLY lack the skills lol
any information you can give as to what might work, what worked in sense 4.5, and what will very likely work in sense 5.0 id love to hear it. Even if its just somethin small my ears and eyes are WIDE open.
Ok so luckily for you skins have been removed in Sense 5, so the theming process is a bit easier (no need to extract m10 files and such). Basically though, you'd take the apk you want to edit, and decompile (extract) it. This can be done using apktool. To get that working, use these tools and this guide. Once your done editing your apk file, recompile (compress) it using "apktool b decompiled_folder_name" (or by reading the guide). Once it has successfully been compiled, sign it with this (copy the PPC Geeks folder to the /Program Files directory on your c: drive, and create a shortcut of the .exe file on your desktop) or you can alternitavely use this tool, which includes an option to zipalign (optimize?) the apk as well as sign it. However, if you use the latter, make sure to sign with test, not private keys.
Also I should mention that the majority of the images you will be editing within the apks are located in /res/drawable-xxhdpi, and the color of most of the text in the apk will probably be located in either /res/values/colors.xml, or /res/values/styles.xml. You may stumble upon a few ".9" images, which are special images that will only stretch along the places that are overlapped by the 1px tall border surrounding them. I recommend using this program to create your own .9 images, or you can edit pre-existing .9s in an image editor progam like photoshop or gimp, just make sure that you do not touch the black 1px border (9patch).
That's all! Good luck, have fun, and you're welcome

I found how to do the new weatherclock, and steal25 is working on the App drawer, and Sysui pull down.
Well theres vts(can decompile and recompile)and has a notepad++ type thing built in and notepad++ is a must for any themer to read xmls, smali (but need apktool, or something like it to decompile and recompile)

What he said Notepad++ is the best.
And Prism.apk is what you're looking for.

Keep in mind that when you're editing colors, the first two digits in the hex code control transparency...also don't be surprised if edits need to be made in multiple places...sometimes both an image and a color need to be set to transparent

Oh man, if i started off thinking it was going to be easy for me, i would think you guys have it easy, and i dont. I knew this would be a difficult task when i jumped ship on this transparency thing and hope i can get it out soon because sense 5.0 is amazing as it is now, and i wanna add that touch of beauty its missing.
Feel free though guys, if anyone wants to get this going without me go for it. Ill be on it for like 3-4 days (possibly straight) figuring this stuff out before i have a even possibly close version of this looking right is my guess.
