Here's what I'm looking at. I just flashed SuperJelly and the device goes into a bootloop. Since it's a new ROM, ADB is disabled, and I can't simulate a battery pull because it restarts rather than shutting down (eliminating my ability to access the bootloader). S-OFF'd with LazyPanda. I'm stuck.
Update: No longer bootlooping, now it's frozen on the boot animation.
Update: After repeated attempts, I was able to open the bootloader (although I'm still not sure how I did it.) MOD's, please delete thread.
If your s-on you have to flash the kernel separately either try fast-food or flashed image gui

For future reference, pressing and holding the power button, waiting for the cap lights to stop blinking, and then when the screen back, letting go of power and holding down Volume Down will bring you to the bootloader. It doesn't matter if you are booting, in Android, stuck, frozen, blackscreen, whatever; as long as you have even 1% battery power you will be able to use that hard coded shortcut. It's similar to how pressing and holding the power button on a laptop will forcibly shut it off and that function is not related to Windows.

Noob question. I know booting into HBOOT involves holding the down-volume button at the same time as the power button. But try as I might, I can't get the phone to do anything but boot normally. There's obviously a trick to this that is eluding me. Can anyone help?
Are you following these steps exactly?
1. Hold down down-volume button.
2. While keeping down-volume pressed, press and hold power button.
3. Keep both buttons pressed until the phone powers up.
If that's not working, I would boot normally and verify that the buttons are working correctly in normal usage.
Yes, I am. Just tried it again exactly as you indicate. I can hold those two buttons indefinitely and nothing happens while I do so. The phone does not boot in any fashion. As soon as I let go, it boots normally. They definitely both work properly in normal usage.
For information purposes for anyone who might have insight, my phone is rooted and I am running Das BAMF Remix 1.6.3. Don't know why that should matter but there it is.
EDIT: Now I know why it wasn't working. I had fast boot turned on. It works when I turn it off. Thanks to FreemanB for trying to help and to anyone who was considering replying.
how did you turn it fast boot off ? bamf toolkit?
No, go to menu/settings/power/fast boot. I think it is off by default. I'd turned it on at some point.
So I've had my atrix unlocked for some time and have had Epinter's android 4.2.1 running on it smoothly. One day I tried to turn it on and it would only go to the boot logo screen (Motorola for stock) and i cant enter fastboot by using the volume keys. Further, the status light never lights up. This may have happened about a week after installing winterboard (port from iOS) probably a dumb choice, but.
can anyone advise if this is bricked, or a way i can get into fastboot and wipe the thing? any advice is appreciated
no input?! I just read somewhere i may be get it into AP fastboot by holding down both volume keys and power button. would love to get this phone working again!

So if you read something, why haven't you taken the initiative to try it out?
I have. And no luck. just says unlocked and will not toggle through options (fastboot etc). I included it in the post so it wasnt a lame 'bump' post. but thanks for your lame bump post.

Just so we are sure, you were holding down the 'Vol down' key while simultaneously pressing the 'Power' button and the text 'Fastboot' didn't show up, is that right?
Also, did the phone have CWM installed?
Yes. clockwork is installed. Yes I held volume down and power.
If you notice when you cold boot your phone a status light appears before the splash screen, and then turns off. Mine.. Doesnt ever turn on.

^ Unfortunately, that does not sound good at all. Did you have the 'fastboot' options (and the other menu items) enabled before? Would you happen to know exactly what made it go away? Because without that support, there's very little you can do.
You could try charging the battery separately, but I'm not so sure. We might need to know what was done/flashed to get into this state.
Press power + volume up, does it do something?
yes I previously had the option to go into fastboot and the other options (bypass motoblur etc) neither volume up nor volume down get me to the other options - it only stays at saying 'unlocked'.
Maybe the volume keys are broken?
I did install Winterboard by Saurik and that may have caused this problem.
I have used a different battery/charged the battery separately and still nothing.
So today my phone started vibrating continuously--it was on the HTC boot screen with screen brightness at very very low and would not stop vibrating. I held down the power button, and after 20 seconds of holding it down, the phone finally stopped. However, not it will not boot back up. I hold the power button down for long periods of time and nothing happens. After letting go of the button, sometimes it does a single vibrate but the screen remains blank. Power button and vol-down does not boot into the bootloader either....Can anyone help me fix this? I have no backup phones I can use...
Just some info about my phone, I was running the newest 3.17 stock rooted ota with Arcreactor kernel. I was also S-OFF via moonshine.
Hello,
I think I might be at the end of the road with my tablet. I've never rooted it or tampered with it in an way, however yesterday it locked up so I did the usual soft reset (hold power and vol+ for 10 seconds) I then turned it back on and the sony logo popped up, but there it just hung. If I press and hold the power button it switches off, a brief press on the power button brings it back on in the same state. So I go Googling, including looking at threads on this site, all seemed to advise to try to get the Android recovery menu up. on the Sony this is done by holding the power and vol+ and then releasing the power button (only) when the son logo appears (this process to be started when the tablet is off) so I did this, and no response at all. Worse than that, where it would turn on and instantly hang, it now doesn't turn on at all. Hooking it up to my PC I can see the device in device manager, but it tells me my usb device has malfunctioned.
At the moment, my thoughts are to open it up, to:
1. Check that the power/volume buttons aren't stuck in some way (preventing the boot command being given correctly)
2. Remove and resolder if necessary internal battery to force a power cycle.
3. Bin it and get something new (it is 2.5yrs old so no big loss i suppose)
Any ideas where to look or similar experiences?
Thanks
So I had the OTA update for 5.1.1 the other day and thought "yay, let's update." it worked fine till this evening where it crashed to a power off state and in now showing the Google logo like it's about to load up and then a turned off screen.
This repeats over and over I can't even stop this loop.
Holding the power button and it just continues to loop.
Power + ANY volume button and it will show the HBOOT or fastboot menu then before I can select anything turn to the powered off state and loop through (if I'm still holding the buttons the menu will show again shortly, or go back to the Google logo)
Any ideas for a solution?
try waiting until the battery drains all the way down then hold the volume down button and plug it in. if that doesn't work then all you can do is contact google support and they'll probably replace or fix it.
Hold the power button down for 20 seconds 3 times. It helped me once with a similar situation
So I have found a solution. Instead of deleting the thread I'll leave this here unless anyone else has this problem.
It seems that trying to enter the fastboot menu when plugged into a USB seemed to work.
It was either the fact it was in the computer, the timing I pressed the "power button + power down" combo, or it had just looped enough times and decided to actually stop interrupting me using the fastboot menu.
Either way, I cleared the cache partition using the recovery and it booted up fine.
EDIT: Thanks for the help, I had tried holding the combo for a long period of time (multiple loops of the booting). I also feared letting it drain in case it refused to startup again and I would have no chance of fixing it.
glad you figured that out! android can be mysterious sometimes. especially when it's on the nexus 9.
